Would Hotelling Kill The Electric Car?, Ujjayant N. Chakravorty, Andrew Leach, Michel Moreaux

Ujjayant Chakravorty

In this paper, we show that the potential for endogenous technological change in alternative energy sources may alter the behavior of resource-owning firms. When technological progress in an alternative energy source can occur through learning-by-doing, resource owners face competing incentives to extract rents from the resource and to prevent expansion of the new technology. We show that in such a context, it is not necessarily the case that scarcity-driven higher traditional energy prices over time will induce alternative energy supply as resources are exhausted. Rather, we show that as we increase the learning potential in the substitute technology, lower equilibrium …

Qaf, Uudles And Gdles: What Ontario's New Quality Assurance Framework Means For Academic Librarians., Karen Nicholson, Dana Thomas, Carol Stephenson

Karen P. Nicholson

In 2010, Ontario implemented a new Quality Assurance Framework (QAF) that replaces UPRAC and OCGS program review and accreditation. Programs will have to demonstrate that students graduate with a set of generic skills, including information literacy. Find out what quality assurance means in higher education in Canada and abroad, and how you can leverage the QAF to integrate information literacy into the curriculum and demonstrate the value of collections that go beyond lists of databases and item counts. There will be the opportunity to contribute to a discussion about quality indicators for a new OCUL library document for program review …

From Job Search To Hiring To Promotion: The Labour Market Experiences Of Ethnic Minorities In Beijing, Reza Hasmath Dec 2010

From Job Search To Hiring To Promotion: The Labour Market Experiences Of Ethnic Minorities In Beijing, Reza Hasmath

Reza Hasmath

Drawing on micro-level census data and interviews with individual workers and employers, this article examines the job-search, hiring and promotion experiences of ethnic minority workers and jobseekers in Beijing. Labour market data indicate that ethnic minorities are at a disadvantage relative to the dominant Han ethnic group, particularly when it comes to employment in high-wage, skilled jobs. The evidence provided here suggests this may be attributable to gaps in the institutional framework that encourage reliance on social-network capital for job search, hiring and promotion. [Winner of the Society for the Study of Social Problems’ Poverty, Class, and Inequality Division Paper …

The Education Of Ethnic Minorities In Beijing, Reza Hasmath

Reza Hasmath

This article investigates the operations of minority schools, and the subsequent on-the-ground experiences of ethnic minorities in Beijing at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels. The article suggests that the ‘inter-sectionality’ of ethnic identities, particularly minority-majority, rich-poor and urban-rural, must be factored in when examining the varying differences between minorities who have graduated from Beijing’s minority schools and non-Beijing ethnic minorities, who have enrolled in the capital city’s universities. The article draws upon recent statistical data, interviews with minority actors and public stakeholders, and participant observation in the city’s schools and universities.

Effects Of Greek Affiliation On African American Students' Engagement: Differences By College Racial Composition., Lori D. Patton, Brian K. Bridges, Lamont A. Flowers Dec 2010

Effects Of Greek Affiliation On African American Students' Engagement: Differences By College Racial Composition., Lori D. Patton, Brian K. Bridges, Lamont A. Flowers

Lori Patton Davis

This study used a nationally representative sample of African American college students to examine the degree to which their affiliation with a Greek-letter organization contributed to engagement in effective educational practices by analyzing National Survey of Student Engagement data at historically Black colleges and universities and predominantly White institutions. Overall, the findings indicated that Greek affiliation does enhance African American student engagement, particularly as it relates to interactions with faculty members and peers. Data also indicated that Greek affiliated members at historically Black colleges and universities appear to be more engaged than their counterparts at predominantly White institutions.

Perspectives On Identity, Disclosure And The Campus Environment Among African American Gay And Bisexual Men At One Historically Black College, Lori D. Patton Dec 2010

Perspectives On Identity, Disclosure And The Campus Environment Among African American Gay And Bisexual Men At One Historically Black College, Lori D. Patton

Lori Patton Davis

This qualitative study examined how 6 African American men at one historically Black college made meaning of their gay or bisexual identity, made decisions about to whom they disclosed this identity, and how their sexual identity experiences were mediated given the context of the campus environment. The findings suggest although this particular HBCU (historically Black college and university) provided the participants an overall supportive and uplifting environment, they experienced challenges with publicly expressing their sexual identities. Implications and recommendations for future research and practice are offered.

The Transformation Of Foreign Policy And Diplomacy, Costas M. Constantinou, Gunther Hellmann Dec 2010

The Transformation Of Foreign Policy And Diplomacy, Costas M. Constantinou, Gunther Hellmann

Costas M. Constantinou

In the face of a globalized world characterized by practices of de-territorialisation,
shifting spaces of political authority, and increasing uncertainty about what is
foreign and what is domestic, foreign policy appears to be an anachronistic and
almost old-fashioned concept which fails to capture the dynamics of contemporary
international relations. A similar problem exists with diplomacy, if viewed
exclusively as an interstate or intergovernmental affair, or as only concerned with the
“foreign” and not also with the “domestic” as well as with varying degrees of
otherness.

Comfortable Conflict And (Il)Liberal Peace In Cyprus, Constantinos Adamides, Costas M. Constantinou Dec 2010

Comfortable Conflict And (Il)Liberal Peace In Cyprus, Constantinos Adamides, Costas M. Constantinou

Costas M. Constantinou

Cypriots currently experience a peculiar conflict while negotiating different understandings of
peace. The conflict today is starkly different to what they experienced in the 1960s and early 70s.
The old enemies and the same rhetoric—and even some of the same politicians—are still around.
But nowadays the Cypriot conflict is more symbolic and ‘civilized’, as a certain kind of peace is
also in place: i.e. absence of violence combined with democracy, partial freedom of movement
and enviable levels of prosperity both north and south of the Buffer Zone. Still, as this peace is
based on forced division, ethnic cleansing and legal …

The Ghost In The Global War On Terror: Critical Perspectives And Dangerous Implications For National Security And The Law, Nick J. Sciullo

Nick J. Sciullo

In this Article, I set out to discuss the dangerous implications of the Global War on Terror (GWOT) and, more generally, the at- tempts of the United States government to address notions of terror- ism and its effect on the safety of the United States and world citizens. I am primarily concerned with engaging a poststructuralist critique of the GWOT to strengthen legal discussions of terrorism and national security policy. While many in the legal academy have focused on particular issues relating to terrorism, I will engage in a macro-level analysis of the way the legal academy conceptualizes terrorism—not how …

A Path To Providing User-Centered Subject Guides, Tammy Stitz, Shari Laster, Frank J. Bove, Casey Wise

Frank J. Bove

The experience at the University of Akron illustrates a transitional path from static Web sites to dynamic, user-centered Web design. Starting with Web-based subject resource guides that were difficult to maintain and navigate, University Libraries migrated to a content management system that solved existing maintenance issues and created the opportunity for interactive resource lists. Subsequent usability testing found that users needed librarian-designed subject guides to understand and access resources. Consequently, University Libraries redesigned its Web site functionality. In the course of this article, it is shown that ease of maintenance and ease of use need not be mutually exclusive.

Transitioning From Marketing-Oriented Design To User-Oriented Design: A Case Study, Shari Laster, Tammy Stitz, Frank J. Bove, Casey Wise

Frank J. Bove

The transition to a new architecture and design for an academic library Web site does not always proceed smoothly. This case study describes the experiences of a library at a large research university that hired an outside Web development contractor to create a new architecture and design for the university’s Web site using dotCMS, an open source content management system. The library participated in the design and development process along with other campus units. Because the university-wide process focused on marketing the university to prospective students, parents, and donors, the fact-finding process that the contractor used for the library’s site …

23. Assessing Children’S Competency To Take The Oath In Court: The Influence Of Question Type On Children’S Accuracy., Angela D. Evans, Thomas D. Lyon

Thomas D. Lyon

This study examined children’s accuracy in response to truth–lie competency questions asked in court. The participants included 164 child witnesses in criminal child sexual abuse cases tried in Los AngelesCounty over a 5-year period (1997–2001) and 154 child witnesses quoted in the U.S. state and federalappellate cases over a 35-year period (1974 –2008). The results revealed that judges virtually never foundchildren incompetent to testify, but children exhibited substantial variability in their performance based on question-type. Definition questions, about the meaning of the truth and lies, were the most difficultlargely due to errors in response to “Do you know” questions. Questions about …

Ending The Clash Of Science, Religion, And Human Survival: A Model For Reintegrating Reason, Intuition, And Reality, Cari Bourette Dec 2010

Ending The Clash Of Science, Religion, And Human Survival: A Model For Reintegrating Reason, Intuition, And Reality, Cari Bourette

Cari Bourette

While there is occasional interest in the reconciliation of science and religion, a system for incorporating both rational and intuitive information in making sense of the world and making informed decisions using the integration of this knowledge is generally unavailable in the modern world. Many religions throughout the world record a long ago period of “oneness” with the divine, with nature, with the universe, which is tragically interrupted by estrangement or separation. By delving into what may seem to be a foreign venue to discover “Reality” for a member of modern Western society, what may be discovered are remnants of …

Sociocultural Dynamics Of Esl Learning (De)Motivation: An Activity Theory Analysis Of Two Adult Korean Immigrants, Tae-Young Kim Dr.

Dr. Tae-Young Kim (김태영, 金兌英)

This study examines the longitudinal trajectories of two Korean ESL immigrants’ L2 learning motivation from an Activity Theory perspective. Two highly skilled immigrants participated in the monthly semi-structured interviews over a period of 10 months. The research questions are as follows: (1) How does the relationship between ESL learners and their perceived social contexts affect and shape the way in which their ESL learning motivation develops? (2) How can the factors affecting the changes in ESL learning motivation be explained from an Activity Theory perspective? The recurring themes in the monthly interview data were coded and aligned to Engeström’s (1999a) …

Rural Adolescents’ Help Seeking Intentions For Emotional Problems: The Influence Of Perceived Benefits And Stoicism., Coralie J. Wilson

Frank Deane

This paper is the second from a larger multi-cite study developed and led by the third author which explores factors that influence adolescents' help-seeking intentions. Specifically, this paper investigates the extent to which perceived benefits of help seeking, stoicism, gender and symptoms of psychological distress are associated with intentions to seek professional help for emotional problems. A cross sectional self-report questionnaire was administered to adolescents recruited from seven high schools in rural towns in the Riverina region of New South Wales. A total of 778 adolescents were recruited. The sample included 373 male and 404 female participants between 13 and …
