The Chesterfield Pike Plan: A Community Revitalization Plan For Historic Route 1, Eric Van Mai
The Chesterfield Pike Plan: A Community Revitalization Plan For Historic Route 1, Eric Van Mai
Master of Urban and Regional Planning Capstone Projects
The Chesterfield Pike Plan complements Chesterfield County’s ongoing efforts to revitalize the northern section of the Jefferson Davis Highway corridor. By focusing on housing and local economic challenges on what is locally known as “The Pike,” this plan explores community revitalization strategies in a diverse inner-ring suburb. The Pike has been impacted by the nationwide trends of suburban poverty and immigrant suburbanization, which present challenges and opportunities in the pursuit of revitalization. Striking a balance between meeting community needs and economic growth requires a plan that identifies ways in which both new private investment and the existing community can benefit. …

The Effect Of Positive Affirmations On Self-Esteem And Well-Being In College Students, Lynnelle Arquiza
The Effect Of Positive Affirmations On Self-Esteem And Well-Being In College Students, Lynnelle Arquiza
Psychology | Senior Theses
Spontaneous affirmations have been associated with greater levels of happiness (Emmanuel et al., 2018), and self-esteem has found to be fostered through positive regard from others (Rogers, 1951 as cited by Maxwell & Bachkirova, 2010). Past research shows that delivering virtual messages through a mobile phone is a widely accessible method in facilitating behavior changes (Sharifi et al., 2013). The goal of this study is to examine how virtual positive affirmations via mobile app or text message can increase self-esteem and well-being. Twenty-three participants were recruited from psychology courses, mostly females aged 18-22 and of Asian descent. Participants were sent …
Choosing Subfields For Luov And Lifting Fields For Rainbow, Dung Hoang Duong, Le Van Luyen, Ha Tran
Choosing Subfields For Luov And Lifting Fields For Rainbow, Dung Hoang Duong, Le Van Luyen, Ha Tran
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
© The Institution of Engineering and Technology 2019 Multivariate public key cryptography is one of the main candidates for post-quantum cryptography. Rainbow, an improved (multi-layer) version of unbalanced oil and vinegar (UOV), is one of the most famous multivariate signature schemes that is a promising candidate for NIST standardisation. At INDOCRYPT 2017, Beullens and Preneel introduced a new variant LUOV of UOV. Their idea is to generate a UOV scheme over the binary field L = F2 and then lift it into a bigger field K = F2r and hence dramatically reduce the public key size. In this study, the …

© 2020 Elsevier B.V. Background: Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) enables non-invasive examination of both the structure and the function of the human brain. The prevalence of high spatial-resolution (sub-millimeter) fMRI has triggered new research on the intra-cortex, such as cortical columns and cortical layers. At present, echo-planar imaging (EPI) is used exclusively to acquire fMRI data; however, susceptibility artifacts are unavoidable. These distortions are especially severe in high spatial-resolution images and can lead to misrepresentation of brain function in fMRI experiments. New method: This paper presents a new method for correcting susceptibility artifacts by combining a T1-weighted (T1w) image …

The Energy Transformation Of Internal Erosion Based On Fluid-Particle Coupling, Thanh Trung Nguyen, Buddhima Indraratna
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
© 2020 Elsevier Ltd The transformation of energy is an intrinsic process that is needed to trigger the internal erosion of soils subjected to a fluid flow, but how to capture this process is not understood very well. This is why this study aims to address these complex processes through a numerical fluid-particle coupling simulation. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is used to model fluid flows which is coupled with the discrete element method (DEM) employed to simulate soil particles. Detailed migration of particles and fluid variables are recorded to enable their kinetic energy to be computed. Successful experiments are …

Transient Nonlinear Heat Transfer Analysis Using A Generic Grid Refinement For Structure Parameter Variations, S Feng, Y Tao, Zhenjun Ma, Grzegorz Krolczyk, Zhixiong Li
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
2020 The Authors Traditional finite element models are usually established based on specific structures to address the transient nonlinear heat transfer analysis; however, if the structure parameters change one has to reanalyze/rebuild the finite element models, resulting in a lot of additional computational cost. To address this problem, this work develops a generic grid refinement approach to improve the computational efficiency of nonlinear heat transfer analysis. The advantage of the proposed method lies that the grids can be used to establish connections between original and modified structures through transfer operators, which is calculated only once for the original structures and …

Numerical Simulation Of Strip Shape Of High-Strength Steel During Hot Rolling Process, Lianjie Li, Haibo Xie, Xu Liu, Tianwu Liu, Enrui Wang, Zhengyi Jiang
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
2020 Trans Tech Publications Ltd, Switzerland. High-strength steel is widely applied due to its excellent mechanical properties. However, its high strength in turn brings great difficulties to production and processing such as hot strip rolling owing to the high rolling force, which results in large elastic deformation of roll stack and poses a huge challenge to the control of strip crown and flatness. In this paper, A threedimensional (3D) elastic-plastic coupled thermo-mechanical finite element (FE) model for hot strip rolling of high-strength steel is developed and then verified experimentally. This model not only calculates the elastic deformation of rolls and …

Attention-Based Residual Network With Scattering Transform Features For Hyperspectral Unmixing With Limited Training Samples, Yiliang Zeng, Christian H. Ritz, Jiahong Zhao, Jinhui Lan
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
© 2020 by the authors. This paper proposes a framework for unmixing of hyperspectral data that is based on utilizing the scattering transform to extract deep features that are then used within a neural network. Previous research has shown that using the scattering transform combined with a traditional K-nearest neighbors classifier (STFHU) is able to achieve more accurate unmixing results compared to a convolutional neural network (CNN) applied directly to the hyperspectral images. This paper further explores hyperspectral unmixing in limited training data scenarios, which are likely to occur in practical applications where the access to large amounts of labeled …

Sparsity-Based Robust Bistatic Mimo Radar Imaging In The Presence Of Array Errors, Wenyu Gao, Jun Li, Daming Zhang, Qinghua Guo
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
© 2020 Wenyu Gao et al. A sparse recovery method for robust transmit-receive angle imaging in a bistatic MIMO radar is proposed to deal with the effect of array gain-phase errors. The impact of multiplicative array gain-phase errors is changed to be additive through model reformulation, and transmit-receive angle imaging is formulated to a sparse total least square signal problem. Then, an iterative algorithm is proposed to solve the optimization problem. Compared with existing methods, the proposed method can achieve a significant performance gain in the case that the number of snapshots is small. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of …

CubeSats, which are limited by size and mass, have limited functionality. These miniaturised satellites suffer from a low power budget, short radio range, low transmission speeds, and limited data storage capacity. Regardless of these limitations, CubeSats have been deployed to carry out many research missions, such as gravity mapping and the tracking of forest fires. One method of increasing their functionality and reducing their limitations is to form CubeSat networks, or swarms, where many CubeSats work together to carry out a mission. Nevertheless, the network might have intermittent connectivity and, accordingly, data communication becomes challenging in such a disjointed network …

A Decentralized Latency-Aware Task Allocation And Group Formation Approach With Fault Tolerance For Iot Applications, Muhammad Mudassar, Yanlong Zhai, Lejian Liao, Jun Shen
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
Development of internet of things (IoT) and smart devices eased life by offering numerous applications targeting to provide real-time low latency services, but they also brought challenges in handling huge data generated from the powerful computations, to get a job done. Decentralized edge computing could help to achieve latency requirements of the applications by executing them closer to the user at edge of network, but most of the current studies actually deployed centralized approaches for cluster computing at edge, which put extra overhead of cluster formation and management. In this article, we propose to group heterogeneous edge nodes on task …

2020 The Author(s). Background: To understand biology and differences among various tissues or cell types, one typically searches for molecular features that display characteristic abundance patterns. Several specificity metrics have been introduced to identify tissue-specific molecular features, but these either require an equal number of replicates per tissue or they can't handle replicates at all. Results: We describe a non-parametric specificity score that is compatible with unequal sample group sizes. To demonstrate its usefulness, the specificity score was calculated on all GTEx samples, detecting known and novel tissue-specific genes. A webtool was developed to browse these results for genes or …

Exploring Nonlinear Diffusion Equations For Modelling Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells, Benjamin Maldon, Ngamta Thamwattana, Maureen P. Edwards
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
2020 by the authors. Dye-sensitized solar cells offer an alternative source for renewable energy by means of converting sunlight into electricity. While there are many studies concerning the development of DSSCs, comprehensive mathematical modelling of the devices is still lacking. Recent mathematical models are based on diffusion equations of electron density in the conduction band of the nano-porous semiconductor in dye-sensitized solar cells. Under linear diffusion and recombination, this paper provides analytical solutions to the diffusion equation. Further, Lie symmetry analysis is adopted in order to explore analytical solutions to physically relevant special cases of the nonlinear diffusion equations. While …

Tunable Strong Photo-Mixing In Weyl Semimetals, Jack Zuber, T Zhao, S Gong, M Hu, R Zhong, C Zhang, S Liu
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
We study both the temperature and band-gap dependence of the first-and third-order intraband conductivities of a Weyl semimetal (WSM) as well as the resultant critical field. By a semiclassical model we further explore how different chemical potentials, cone separations, field geometries, and finite relaxation times affect photoresponse. We determine that the band-gap variation is characterized by the Weyl cone separation and observe significant thermal enhancement of the nonlinear response. Universal behaviors of both the linear and nonlinear response have also been observed under certain conditions. Coupled with experimentally accessible critical field values of 104-105 V m-1, our results give strong …

Capacity Maximized Linear Precoder Design For Spatial-Multiplexing Mimo Vlc Systems, Yanrong Zhai, Hao Chi, Jun Tong, Jiangtao Xi
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
© 2013 IEEE. This paper proposes a novel linear precoder design based on the singular value decomposition (SVD) for multi-input multi-output visible light communications (MIMO VLC). We provide an analytical expression on power allocation subject to the function of maximizing the lower bound of capacity according to the optical wireless communication channel model. The expression is rather different from the radio frequency (RF) communications due to the non-negativity of the transmitted signals in VLC. Furthermore, we design an adaptive bit loading scheme for sub-streams with consideration of the tremendous gain difference among subchannels. Performances of the proposed adaptive power and …

With the advances in sonar imaging technology, sonar imagery has increasingly been used for oceanographic studies in civilian and military applications. High-resolution imaging sonars can be mounted on various survey platforms, typically autonomous underwater vehicles, which provide enhanced speed and improved data quality with long-range support. This paper addresses the automatic detection of mine-like objects using sonar images. The proposed Gabor-based detector is designed as a feature pyramid network with a small number of trainable weights. Our approach combines both semantically weak and strong features to handle mine-like objects at multiple scales effectively. For feature extraction, we introduce a parameterized …
