Interfacial Microstructure And Shear Strength Of Tc4 Alloy Joints Vacuum Brazed With Ti-Zr-Ni-Cu Filler Metal, Shilei Liu, Jiakai Miao, Weiwei Zhang, Ran Wei, Chen Chen, Tan Wang, Wuduo Zhao, Zhengyi Jiang, Fushan Li

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

2020 Elsevier B.V. Ti-6Al-4V alloy was successfully vacuum brazed with a commercial Ti-37.5Zr-10Ni-15Cu (wt.%) filler metal. The effect of brazing temperature and time on the microstructure and shear strength of the brazed joints were investigated. When the brazing temperature was 905 °C for 10 min, the typical interfacial microstructure of the brazed joint were a single layer of α-Ti with a high concentration of Ti, α-Ti, (Ti, Zr)2(Cu, Ni) intermetallic compound and eutectoid microstructure. Increasing the brazing temperature and time are beneficial to eliminate the (Ti, Zr)2(Cu, Ni) intermetallic compound that degrades the properties in the brazed joint. The shear …

Air Void Detection Using Variational Mode Decomposition With Low Rank, Fok Hing Chi Tivive, Abdesselam Bouzerdoum, Shivakumar Karekal

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

This paper presents an air-void detection technique for air-coupled radar, which emits electromagnetic waves to interrogate an air-void inside a medium or between two media. The reflections from the air-medium interfaces are usually corrupted by air-coupling, antenna ringing, and internal reflections, rendering air-void detection very difficult or, in certain cases, impossible. The proposed method exploits the low-rank structure of the background clutter to suppress these nuisance signals. A variational mode decomposition model is developed to extract the backscattering at different air-medium interfaces as signal modes. Real experiments are conducted using a stepped frequency radar. The experimental results show that the …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

The presence of sodium-rich layers on iron oxide surfaces plays an important role in the functionality of glassy lubricants used in harsh working conditions of metal formation. However, the underlying low-friction mechanism of the sodium layer on iron oxide surfaces at the atomic level is not well understood. In this work, Na adsorption on the most stable surface of Fe2O3 (0001) is studied by density functional theory. The most stable adsorption configuration and the modifications induced by the adsorption on the structural as well as the electronic properties of the surface are discussed. By constructing the potential …

Three-Dimensional Velocity Distribution In Straight Smooth Channels Modeled By Modified Log-Law, Shu-Qing Yang, Muhammad Zain Bin Riaz, Muttucumaru Sivakumar, Keith Enever, Nadeeka Miguntanna

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Time-average velocity distribution in steady and uniform channel flows is important for fundamental research and practical application as it is always three-dimensional (3D), regardless of channel geometry. However, its determination has predominantly been carried out by using complex numerical software, even for the simplest geometry such as rectangular channels. The log-law was developed initially for circular pipe flows, where a single shear velocity is used to normalize the velocity (u+) and its distance (y+). Tracy and Lester found that the performance of the log-law can be extended to express velocity profiles in rectangular channels when the global shear velocities (gRS)0.5 …

Prokopovich, Alex Pogossov, Mark I. Reinhard, Marco Petasecca, Michael L. F Lerch, N Matsufuji, M Povoli, A Summanwar, Angela Kok, Michael A. Jackson, Anatoly B. Rosenfeld

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Microdosimetry is a particularly powerful method to estimate the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of any mixed radiation field. This is particularly convenient for therapeutic heavy ion therapy (HIT) beams, referring to ions larger than protons, where the RBE of the beam can vary significantly along the Bragg curve. Additionally, due to the sharp dose gradients at the end of the Bragg peak (BP), or spread out BP, to make accurate measurements and estimations of the biological properties of a beam a high spatial resolution is required, less than a millimetre. This requirement makes silicon microdosimetry particularly attractive due to the …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

2020 Elsevier B.V. We clear land for agricultural purposes, we draw water from streams and aquifers, and we build houses in coastal regions for their ready access to the sea. Our need for food, water, and shelter is basic, but so is variability in our natural environment. Understanding this is key to the long-term sustainability of the anthropocene. At any location in the environment, long-term temporal averages may indicate regions that exceed sustainability thresholds. For example, environmental thresholds might be used by insurance companies to set the prices of insurance premiums. In this article, we present the problem of spatial-statistical …

When “Best I Can” Is Not Enough: Welfare Managers’ Appraisal Of Clients’ Mothering Practices, Brianna Turgeon Jan 2020

When “Best I Can” Is Not Enough: Welfare Managers’ Appraisal Of Clients’ Mothering Practices, Brianna Turgeon

Research, Publications & Creative Work

The “mommy wars” are a cultural narrative of conflict between mothers that amplifies the scrutiny placed on mothering practices. While mothers at all social locations face criticisms for their choices surrounding parenting, mothers in poverty lack the resources to enact many socially mandated parenting practices and contend with additional scrutiny through participation in programs like welfare-to-work. In this project, I examine the parenting expectations mothers on welfare must navigate. I use 69 semi-structured interviews with welfare-to-work program managers in Ohio from 2010-2011 to examine which mothering ideologies they encourage and discourage clients to adopt. I find that managers are highly …

Incorporating Research Design In Public Diplomacy: The Role Of Listening To Foreign Publics, Juve J. Cortés, Thomas Jamieson

Public Administration Faculty Publications

Research design involves a set of decisions regarding what or who will be studied and the procedures in acquiring and analyzing information. In this article, we apply lessons from research design to public diplomacy, a field focused on engaging with foreign publics. Much prior scholarship sheds light on what PD is and its programs, but less attention has been given to the role of listening to understand what foreign publics think and believe. We propose three interrelated recommendations to improve the quality of implementing PD programs. First, before any program is implemented, we need to correctly identify a perceived issue …

Physical Activity In Two Low-Income Detroit Neighborhoods: Disentangling Human Agency From Social Structure, Daniel J. Rose Jan 2020

Physical Activity In Two Low-Income Detroit Neighborhoods: Disentangling Human Agency From Social Structure, Daniel J. Rose

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This article explores strategies developed by African American residents in response to barriers to physical activity in two low-income Detroit neighborhoods. Using 47 in-depth, qualitative interviews, a grounded theory approach allowed the analysis to be reframed around the ways in which structural factors conditioned, but did not determine the human agency of residents seeking physical activity. Interviews revealed numerous responses to structural barriers such as devising home routines, cognitive mapping to avoid perceived threats, and leaving the neighborhood to access resources. Differences in neighborhood contexts, along with unique individual concerns, showed that agency was neither a constant nor independent force, …

Illiberalism: A Primer And Call To Action For Social Workers, Loring P. Jones, David Engstrom

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Liberal democracies had been ascendant in the post-World War II era. President Trump is part of a wave of nationalist, anti-immigrant politicians with autocratic tendencies who are challenging liberal democracy. The term given to the governing philosophy of these leaders is illiberalism. This paper is meant to be a primer on illiberalism for social workers, describing this ideology and the threat illiberalism poses for democracy, our social welfare system, and the interests of social work clients. We conclude with a discussion on what social workers can do to defend democracy in light of the historic mission to advance social …

Using A Contextual Effects Measurement Approach To Understand The Influence Of Community On Individual Behavior, Bridget E. Weller, Sinaida Cherubin, Shelby D. Leverett, Alexandria Taylor Jan 2020

Using A Contextual Effects Measurement Approach To Understand The Influence Of Community On Individual Behavior, Bridget E. Weller, Sinaida Cherubin, Shelby D. Leverett, Alexandria Taylor

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

A social organization perspective identifies processes operating in the community that may influence an individual’s behavior. To understand such processes, researchers can apply a contextual effects measurement approach, which is used to assess the influence of group-level effects on lower level outcomes. However, few community studies employ this approach. The purpose of this article is to present and evaluate the merits of the contextual effects measurement approach.
