Three Essays On Entry Barriers And Incentives In Labor Markets, Samuel Ingram Jan 2020

Three Essays On Entry Barriers And Incentives In Labor Markets, Samuel Ingram

Theses and Dissertations--Economics

Occupational choice at the margin depends on both the incentives for entry and barriers to entry. The primary entry barrier determined by regulation is an occupational license. These are government laws determining the minimum qualifications to enter an occupation including education, testing, fees, and background checks. These regulations are currently enforced on 25% of the US labor market. The laws are crafted to protect consumers from unsafe goods and services but also have important consequences in labor market outcomes. The consequences may include fewer workers entering the profession, changes to which workers enter the profession, and altering competition, all of …

Antitrust Implications For Mergers Involving Maverick Firms, Alexander Mcglothlin Jan 2020

Antitrust Implications For Mergers Involving Maverick Firms, Alexander Mcglothlin

Theses and Dissertations--Economics

Maverick firms are defined in the Horizontal Merger Guidelines as those firms that may exert a disproportional competitive effect in markets where they compete. The Guidelines mandate that mergers and acquisitions involving maverick firms be given special consideration by the Agencies, however not much is known about maverick firms or their competitive effects when they are acquired. The Guidelines describe characteristics that may be present in a maverick firm, but stop short of providing a discrete test that may be used for their identification. They are often small firms whose acquisitions do not warrant reporting to the Agencies due to …

Remember That Party Last Night? Examining The Effects Of Binge-Like Alcohol On Memory, Anna Thomas Jan 2020

Remember That Party Last Night? Examining The Effects Of Binge-Like Alcohol On Memory, Anna Thomas

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Alcohol is a widely available drug that is often abused. Studies have shown alcohol-induced memory loss in humans and animals; however, the large amount of alcohol often necessary to observe such loss and use of involuntary drinking paradigms in animals makes translation difficult. The current study was designed to look at voluntary binge-like drinking behavior and memory in rodents. We anticipated decreases in working memory function following consumption of binge-like alcohol in mice and expected a greater deficit in mice experiencing acute withdrawal during the memory task. The present study explored drinking behaviors in adult C57BL/6J mice (18 male, 18 …

Poor And Unpopular: How Verbal Ability And Theory Of Mind Predict Peer Rejection In A Socioeconomically Diverse Environment, Ellen Rispoli Jan 2020

Poor And Unpopular: How Verbal Ability And Theory Of Mind Predict Peer Rejection In A Socioeconomically Diverse Environment, Ellen Rispoli

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

This study compares associations between Peer Rejection (PR) and Verbal Ability (VA) and PR and Theory of Mind (ToM) within a socioeconomically diverse context. At the time the study was stopped, five participants, ages 6-9, were recruited from the Boys and Girls Club. Participating families completed socioeconomic status (SES) questionnaires written in either English or Spanish prior to an hour-long session with a team of Butler University undergraduate students. The undergraduates administered the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT) and Expressive Vocabulary Test (EVT) to assess VA; the Mind of the Eyes task, a series of three Faux Pas (FP) tasks, …

Impairment Or Underestimation? Negative Illusory Bias In Depressive Symptoms And Theory Of Mind, Jaclyn Boyer Jan 2020

Impairment Or Underestimation? Negative Illusory Bias In Depressive Symptoms And Theory Of Mind, Jaclyn Boyer

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Theory of Mind (ToM) is the social-cognitive skill of attributing beliefs, feelings, and intentions to others in order to predict their future behavior. Past research on ToM and depression is quite ambiguous; some studies have found significant impairment of ToM performance in depressed individuals, while others have found that depressed individuals perform better than those without depression. The purpose of the study was to clarify this ambiguity by considering the phenomenon of negative illusory bias (NIB) as a potential mediating variable. NIB refers to the tendency of competent individuals to underestimate their abilities. Therefore, along with measures of ToM and …

On The Use Of Past And Present Values In The Marketing Of Butler University, Kathleen Berry

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

The following is a case study analyzing the founding values of what is today Butler University and comparing this founding to values promoted in the university’s modern marketing communications. The findings explore the life of Butler University’s primary founder, Ovid Butler, and the events which led him to believe so passionately in the construction of what was known at the time of its founding as North Western Christian University (NWCU). Findings also include a brief overview of the school’s operations between its opening in 1855 and modern day before diving into examples of contemporary marketing communications. Based on the information …

Anxiety-Inducing Effects Of Alcohol And Caffeine In C57bl/6j Mice, Melissa Evans Jan 2020

Anxiety-Inducing Effects Of Alcohol And Caffeine In C57bl/6j Mice, Melissa Evans

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Caffeine and alcohol are two of the most popular and legal drugs around the world. In America, both drugs are easily accessible, which has contributed to frequent use of the drugs in tandem. Previous studies have revealed much about the mechanisms of each drug, but the effects of co-consumption are not yet fully understood. One concern is that caffeine could reduce how intoxicated a person feels, leading to an increase in alcohol consumption or other risky behaviors. Withdrawal is also a concern as it helps maintain the cycle of substance abuse. This study was designed to examine consumption patterns of …

¡Guiris, No Más! The Role Of A Dmo In Promoting Responsible Tourism Among A Destination’S Key Publics: An Analysis Of Barcelona Turisme’S Messaging On Instagram, Kylie G. Stine

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Since hosting the 1992 Summer Olympics, Barcelona quickly elevated its status as a prime tourist destination. Still, as visitors from all over the world flock to the city, its residents have felt pushed out, disrespected, and exploited, resulting in a phenomenon known as “tourism-phobia.” Barcelona Turisme, the city’s destination marketing organization (DMO) developed a 2020 Strategic Tourism Plan to find ways not to manage tourism in a city, but to manage a tourist city through responsible, sustainable practices. As Instagram has evolved as a principal social media platform for two-way, interactive conversations between brands and their audiences, this research studies …

Estimating The Size Of The Shadow Economy In The Kingdom Of Saudi Arabia, Ali Alsubaie Jan 2020

Estimating The Size Of The Shadow Economy In The Kingdom Of Saudi Arabia, Ali Alsubaie

Wayne State University Dissertations

The shadow economy (SE), as unreported economic activity, is a challenge for researchers and policymakers worldwide because of its size, consequences for economic development, and the difficulty of evaluating it. This dissertation makes an original contribution to SE research by estimating the size of the shadow economy in Saudi Arabia for the period 1975–2018.

This dissertation uses a modified version of the most widely used method currently available for SE estimation: the Currency Demand Approach (CDA). This approach focuses on identifying excess cash used in an economy not accounted for in the official statistics on the assumption that shadow activities …

Named But Not Known: Teaching And Assessing The Research-Writing Process, Ruth Boeder Jan 2020

Named But Not Known: Teaching And Assessing The Research-Writing Process, Ruth Boeder

Wayne State University Dissertations

In lived experience, the two processes of secondary research and writing overlap and intertwine interminably, creating an overarching complex system as research becomes expressed in writing and writing generates new research. This classroom study explores the two processes as one—the research-writing process—through coding of student journal responses and assessment of student research papers. Analysis reveals students to be thoughtful but not yet as nuanced in their descriptions of their research process as much be desired. They more frequently discuss writing with weaknesses in their research process than with research strengths. Further findings indicate that although it is difficult to assess …

Reimagining The Death Penalty: Targeting Christians, Conservatives, Spearit Jan 2020

Reimagining The Death Penalty: Targeting Christians, Conservatives, Spearit

Articles

This Article is an interdisciplinary response to an entrenched legal and cultural problem. It incorporates legal analysis, religious study and the anthropological notion of “culture work” to consider death penalty abolitionism and prospects for abolishing the death penalty in the United States. The Article argues that abolitionists must reimagine their audiences and repackage their message for broader social consumption, particularly for Christian and conservative audiences. Even though abolitionists are characterized by some as “bleeding heart” liberals, this is not an accurate portrayal of how the death penalty maps across the political spectrum. Abolitionists must learn that conservatives are potential allies …

Investigating The Impact Of Explanation On Repairing Trust In Ai Diagnostic Systems For Re-Diagnosis, Lamia Alam Jan 2020

Investigating The Impact Of Explanation On Repairing Trust In Ai Diagnostic Systems For Re-Diagnosis, Lamia Alam

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

AI systems are increasingly being fielded to support diagnoses and healthcare advice for patients. One promise of AI application is that they might serve as the first point of contact for patients, replacing routine tasks, and allowing health care professionals to focus on more challenging and critical aspects of healthcare. For AI systems to succeed, they must be designed based on a good understanding of how physicians explain diagnoses to patients, and how prospective patients understand and trust the systems providing the diagnosis, as well as the explanations they expect. In this thesis, I examine this problem across three studies. …

Empowering Women Through Physical Education And Sports In Moldova, Aprille Hibbard Jan 2020

Empowering Women Through Physical Education And Sports In Moldova, Aprille Hibbard

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Girls and women face obstacles when it comes to empowerment, whether it be cultural, socioeconomic, political or religious. As a Peace Corps Volunteer in Moldova, I tried to help the girls and women in my community overcome some of these obstacles by promoting female participation in physical education and sports. Primary obstacles were the poor insulation and heating in the gymnasium, which prevented girls and women from participating in sports and physical education from October-April. Working with a Let Girls Learn (LGL) grant allowed us to repair the condition of the gymnasium, add additional sports teams and clubs to the …

Maximization In Moderation : Finding The Optimal Level Of Maximizing Tendency, Shannon Pierce Jan 2020

Maximization In Moderation : Finding The Optimal Level Of Maximizing Tendency, Shannon Pierce

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Maximizing tendency is a decision making style in which an individual keeps a high standard for decisions. Research has shown conflicting results regarding the nature of maximizing tendency and various subjective outcomes. Extant research has shown maximizing tendency to be linearly related, both negatively and positively, to depression, optimism, life satisfaction and decision regret. Although measurement issues have been routinely blamed for the inconsistencies in these findings, this study posits that maximizing tendency is curvilinearly related to the subjective outcomes of decision regret, optimism, and life satisfaction, based on the Too Much of a Good Thing effect. It was hypothesized …

The "Matthew Effect" In Punishment: : Do Previous Sanctions Foster More Sanctions In The Future?, Yinzhi Shen Jan 2020

The "Matthew Effect" In Punishment: : Do Previous Sanctions Foster More Sanctions In The Future?, Yinzhi Shen

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Societal response to crime is a topic at the heart of criminology. In contrast to a vast literature on the hidden social consequences of formal sanctions on individuals, family and communities, few studies have examined the ramifications of a formal sanction on future interactions with the criminal justice system over the individual life course. Applying a cumulative disadvantage (CDA) perspective, my dissertation contributes to the understanding of whether and how a prior punishment affects an individual’s trajectory of future punishments over the life course. Theoretically, I elaborated two conceptualizations of CDA processes and highlighted the overlooked value of applying CDA …

Perceptions Of Barriers In Prosecuting Human Trafficking Cases, Jennifer Nelms Jan 2020

Perceptions Of Barriers In Prosecuting Human Trafficking Cases, Jennifer Nelms

Theses and Dissertations

Human trafficking is a world-wide problem with many barriers. Human trafficking cases are criminal but are also a violation of human rights. Human trafficking victims are lured from their homes based on the allusion from the trafficker of a better life. The victims are then beaten, forces to use drugs, and essentially broken. Once the victim is broken they are forced to perform sexual acts. Due to the initial promises and threats the victims endure, they also suffered from fear of trusting others especially law enforcement as well as other psychological issues similar to that of a domestic violence victim. …

Social Development In The Urban Informal Sector: A Case Study Of Street Vendors In Pasar Minggu, Jakarta, Cucu Nurhayati Jan 2020

Social Development In The Urban Informal Sector: A Case Study Of Street Vendors In Pasar Minggu, Jakarta, Cucu Nurhayati

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

Street vendors are basically able to sustain the economy of the urban poor. However, their existence is considered to cause disorder in the way they often deal with disciplinary actions organized by the government. The policy set by the provincial government on street vendors should be addressed to the cultural dimension, by minimizing acts of violence and instilling the values of cleanliness and order. Previous studies see street vendors as alternative economic actors who have a stake in the national economy. The studies also put more emphasis on policies (structure) and behaviour of street vendors (culture) so that they do …

Critical Media Literacy And Cultural Autonomy In A Mediated World, Bill Yousman, Lori Bindig Yousman Jan 2020

Critical Media Literacy And Cultural Autonomy In A Mediated World, Bill Yousman, Lori Bindig Yousman

Communication, Media & The Arts Faculty Publications

We live in mediated worlds. Every waking hour of our lives finds us close, physically and mentally, to some sort of media content: Television, radio, movies, magazines, billboards, blogs, YouTube videos, websites, and social media like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, TikTok, and Pinterest. Media scholars have been researching the ubiquitous role that media play in our lives for decades, but the current media environment is unlike any seen in history, as developments in digital technologies have produced a veritable onslaught of words, images, and sounds that can be accessed anywhere, at any time; all from a device that most of …

Blessed Are The Peacemakers: Pacifism, Just War And Peacebuilding, By Lisa Sowle Cahill (Book Review), Brian Stiltner

Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

Lisa Sowle Cahill, a professor at Boston College, is one of the academy’s leading theological ethicists. Among her abiding interests has been the ethics of war and peace. In 1994, she authored Love Your Enemies: Discipleship, Pacifism, and Just War Theory (Fortress Press). That book served an influential role for a generation of students and scholars. It provided a substantive survey of the history of Christian thought on justifying war and promoting peace. It served as a textbook for undergraduate and graduate students, charting the development of Christian thought from Jesus’ teaching to twentieth-century theologians. Blessed Are the Peacemakers takes …

Anti-Lgbtq Hate: An Analysis Of Situational Variables, Jill Kehoe Jan 2020

Anti-Lgbtq Hate: An Analysis Of Situational Variables, Jill Kehoe

Publications and Research

The current study aimed to augment the scant body of literature on anti-LGBTQ hate by providing an in-depth examination of anti-LGBTQ hate incident situational characteristics including offender substance use, number of offenders, crime location, and victim-offender relationship. Analysis of situational dynamic variables provided support for the notion that anti-LGBTQ hate is a distinct type of criminal incident. Significantly increased levels of offender substance use, crimes perpetrated by multiple offenders, crimes perpetrated by acquaintances, and crimes taking place in open spaces substantiates the theory that anti-LGBTQ hate is qualitatively unique, typified by different characteristics than other forms of crime. The data …

Mirroring Opposition Threats, Samuel Handlin Jan 2020

Mirroring Opposition Threats, Samuel Handlin

Political Science Faculty Works

Hugo Chávez and his Bolivarian Movement came to power in 1999 promising to refound the Venezuelan state and restructure the polity in ways that would build “popular power” through the promotion of grassroots participation, organization, and mobilization. Once in office, the Bolivarian forces launched a series of initiatives to sponsor organization and mobilization among supporters, which ranged widely in their functions and strategic purpose. State-mobilized organizations can be seen as operating in three different arenas of politics: the local governance arena; the electoral arena; and the protest arena. From an ideological standpoint, the Bolivarian Movement was oriented toward sponsoring organizations …

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The study focused on the analysis of linear relations between personality, self-regulation, coping strategies and achievement emotions. The main objective was to establish a model of linear, empirical, associative to infer needs and proposals for intervening in emotional health in the different profiles of university students. A total of 642 undergraduate students participated in this research. Evidence of associative relations between personality factors, self-regulation and coping strategies was found. The neuroticism factor had a significant negative associative relationship with Self-Regulation both globally and in its factors; especially important was its negative relation to decision making, and coping strategies focused in …

Reproducibility And Registration In Sexuality Research, Tierney K. Lorenz Jan 2020

Reproducibility And Registration In Sexuality Research, Tierney K. Lorenz

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Most readers of the Archives of Sexual Behavior will, by now, be familiar with an upsurge of interest in best practices for reproducibility and replicability across modern scientific disciplines (Ioannidis, 2005; National Academies of Sciences Engineering and Medicine, 2019; Simmons, Nelson, & Simonsohn, 2011). Concerns about the basic validity of findings that cannot be replicated—and the widespread practices and incentive systems that lead to unverifiable results—are particularly important for social and behavioral scientists, whose fields of study are relatively younger and whose work is often interpreted as more subjective than other sciences (Lilienfeld, 2012).

As sexuality research continues to mature …

Reward-Sensitive Basal Ganglia Stabilize The Maintenance Of Goal-Relevant Neural Patterns In Adolescents, Nicholas A. Hubbard, Rachel R. Romeo, Hannah Grotzinger, Melissa Giebler, Andrea Imhof, Clemens C. C Bauer, John D. E. Gabrieli Jan 2020

Reward-Sensitive Basal Ganglia Stabilize The Maintenance Of Goal-Relevant Neural Patterns In Adolescents, Nicholas A. Hubbard, Rachel R. Romeo, Hannah Grotzinger, Melissa Giebler, Andrea Imhof, Clemens C. C Bauer, John D. E. Gabrieli

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Maturation of basal ganglia (BG) and frontoparietal circuitry parallels developmental gains in working memory (WM). Neurobiological models posit that adult WM performance is enhanced by communication between reward-sensitive BG and frontoparietal regions, via increased stability in the maintenance of goal-relevant neural patterns. It is not known whether this reward-driven pattern stability mechanism may have a role in WM development. In 34 young adolescents (12.16–14.72 years old) undergoing fMRI, reward-sensitive BG regions were localized using an incentive processing task. WM-sensitive regions were localized using a delayed-response WM task. Functional connectivity analyses were used to examine the stability of goal-relevant functional connectivity …
