Post-Truth's Effect On The Brain And The Future Self: A Critical Communication Pedagogy Response, David H. Kahl Jr.
Post-Truth's Effect On The Brain And The Future Self: A Critical Communication Pedagogy Response, David H. Kahl Jr.
Journal of Communication Pedagogy
The university was created for the critical examination of ideas to seek truth. However, the proliferation of post-truth messages has made this goal more difficult to reach, creating an important communication pedagogy problem. Hegemonic forces create post-truth messages to mislead people and play to their existing beliefs in order to maintain and advance power. Post-truth messages are particularly effective because they cause cognitive overload and temporal discounting. Critical communication pedagogy (CCP) is a means by which instructors and students can evaluate post-truth messages. CCP allows for dialogue to reduce the cognitive issues that post-truth messages cause and allow for the …

#Politicalcommunicationsowhite: A Call For Considering Race In The Undergraduate Political Communication Course, Ant Woodall, Lindsey Meeks
Journal of Communication Pedagogy
The field of communication has been working to reconcile its historic omission of race from research and pedagogy. The subfield of political communication has begun this process in its research but has yet to consider the implications of race missing from pedagogy. This essay offers an argument for including race in the political communication course, in the form of more focus on race in course content and more work by scholars of color. We offer reasons for these inclusions, ways for instructors to begin this incorporation, and what considerations instructors must be mindful of throughout the process.

Digital Footprints: Freedom On The Move At The University Of Kentucky, Vanessa Holden, Reinette F. Jones, Jennifer A. Bartlett, Kopana Terry
Library Presentations
During the late 18th through the mid-19th centuries, the Commonwealth of Kentucky saw significant movement of self-emancipated people seeking freedom from bondage. Often referred to as “runaways” or “fugitive slaves,” in historical texts, self-emancipated people defined freedom in many ways. These migrations were widely documented in newspaper advertisements known as fugitive slave advertisements and runaway ads in local newspapers published throughout the state. Access to these materials (often buried in databases or on microform) has been problematic at best. Enter the Self Emancipated and Enslaved People in Kentucky (SEEK) Project, a partnership between faculty in the University of Kentucky Libraries …

Ethnic-Racial Socialization Experiences Of Mexican American Youth, Katherine J. Bingham, Elizabeth A. Cutrer-Párraga, Timothy B. Smith
Faculty Publications
Research has shown that ethnic–racial socialization (ERS) predicts education and mental health outcomes for adolescents. However, limited research has evaluated the ERS experiences of Latinx students. The current study examined ERS experiences of Mexican American youth in four focus group interviews that were transcribed and analyzed at both the individual and group level using interpretive phenomenological analysis. Main themes included feeling like an outsider, navigating discrimination, encountering social/emotional difficulties, and achieving a positive identity. Each theme contained two to three subcategories that provide further insight into the Mexican Americans' ERS experiences. Participants reported within-group discrimination, motivation to disprove stereotypes, and …

This paper summarizes the literature on the correlation between economic variables and conflict in three phases. This paper aims to synthesize literature about the appropriate use of economic measures during different phases of conflict: pre-conflict, during conflict, and post-conflict. The research follows the format: analysis of the impacts of economic welfare as the source of conflict, setting economic prosperity as the central goal to stop violence, proposing fiscal measures that lead to short-term growth to avoid conflict recurrence, and finally, analysis of fiscal elements that promote economic development in the long-run. The analysis identifies fiscal policy as the most appropriate …

Increasing Competition: The Impact Of Nil On The Ncaa’S Monopsony Power In The Labor Market, Michael Henry Parme
Senior Projects Spring 2024
The debate for the last several decades over paying college athletes took a major turn in 2021 with the implementation of an interim policy on name, image, and likeness (NIL). This policy finally allowed athletes in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) to earn an income by promoting products and services using their platform as a college athlete. The rule change followed a very important antitrust case, Alston v. NCAA, where the Supreme Court determined that some NCAA rules limiting college athletes’ compensation violated antitrust law. The collusive monopsony and cartel that the Power 5 conference schools formed was significantly …

The Chronology Of Development In Senegal, Charles Simmons
Senior Projects Spring 2024
This paper asserts that to fulfill its development potential, Senegal must prioritize substantial investment toward accelerating the structural transformation of the agricultural sector through investments in human capital and widened access to quality education and healthcare services to better facilitate inclusive growth and productivity. Additionally, structural reforms must be implemented to increase domestic revenues via increasing the tax base, targeting the informal sector, simplifying tax codes, and strengthening governance and compliance frameworks. By implementing tailored fiscal policy reforms and strengthening institutional capacity, Senegal can create a robust environment for sustainable development and accomplish its development aspirations. Chapter 1 explores Senegal's …
Assessing The Social, Economic, And Environmental Impact Of Solar Energy Integration On The Rural Areas Of Killa Abdullah District Of Quetta, Balochistan, Pakistan, Naseem Nazari
Senior Projects Spring 2024
Abstract
Electricity is essential for both social and economic progress. However, many developing countries struggle with challenges posed by an inadequate energy supply. Like other developing regions, Pakistan's Balochistan province faces a severe electricity crisis, with current demand at approximately 1,650 MW annually. In contrast, the peak load supplied to the province from the national grid has remained at only 500-600 MW. Rural areas of Balochistan, where almost 80% of the population does not have access to an adequate electricity supply, are impacted the most. This critical issue persists because the rural areas are situated at a considerable distance from …

China's Growth Odyssey: A Model For Optimal Resource Allocation Amidst China’S Policy Shift, Eric Lin
China's Growth Odyssey: A Model For Optimal Resource Allocation Amidst China’S Policy Shift, Eric Lin
Senior Projects Spring 2024
Driven by the recent shift in China’s economic policy to address decaying demand, both domestic and foreign, this paper offers insights into rethinking the structure of the supply side of China's economy, by constructing a two-sector optimal growth model combining Solow’s neoclassical growth theory with optimal control theory. Under the assumption that supply-demand equilibrium prevails in the economy, the model answers the question of how China can optimally allocate physical capital and labor between the production of consumption goods and investment goods to maximize consumer utility from 2007 to 2022. When plotting the optimal allocation ratios against the actual allocation …

A Cross Country Growth Analysis Of Pakistan And Bangladesh, Mahnoor Khawaja
Senior Projects Spring 2024
It is unfortunate for Pakistan that the country has lost its competitiveness with other Asian countries and has come to a point where it must learn from the smaller states to overcome its economic hazard. One such country is Bangladesh. Once a part of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Bangladesh today has outrun Pakistan with its growing economy. The question is, is there something that Pakistan can learn from Bangladesh’s economic decisions to overcome its economic trap? This thesis explores the factors behind the contrasting economies of Pakistan and Bangladesh with a sharp focus on the garment industry of Bangladesh …

Air Quality Citizen Scientists: A Case Study Of The Hudson Valley Air Quality Coalition, Faine Aichele
Senior Projects Spring 2024
Citizen science is an inclusionary reframing of the scientific process. Citizen science uses lived experience as an input to inform the research done by flexible institutions. In an ever changing global environment, citizen science as a way to generate data about environmental science is gaining recognition as a valuable tool. In the study of air quality, citizen scientist advocacy is transforming the way environmental protections are viewed beyond just resource conservation. Issues of air quality are vast, and the nature of the resource poses considerable difficulties around ensuring clean air access through policy. This project specifically looks at the Hudson …

Trading Pressures: Deeper Insight Into Export Controls And Sanctions’ Impact On The United States And Global Trade Markets, Eric Julian Guaman
Senior Projects Spring 2024
This paper explores the evolving landscape of the global trade market and trade dynamics by evaluating the effects of economic sanctions. The paper analyzes the subject via data collection projects and research material, such as research papers, news articles, and journal articles. The results convey that economic sanctions have adverse effects that reverberate beyond the intended target, thus causing initiatives that reshape the global economic landscape. In addition, the analysis demonstrates that challenges arise for countries that popularly use trade controls, such as the United States, whose total share of the global market has decreased, alongside the rise in foreign …

Justicia Del Lenguaje: How Language Barriers Affect The Lives Of Immigrants In Kingston, Ny., Verónica Martínez Cruz
Senior Projects Spring 2024
Language is the bridge of communication between communities. Many im/migrant communities do not have that bridge - or support - in the context of language. Thus, this is where Language Justice comes in, advocating for the right of each person to express themselves in the language in which they feel most comfortable but also to be understood, no matter how many languages are spoken in a room, that's why the creation of multilingual spaces and a form of inclusive, non-gendered language are one of the main principles of Language Justice.

The Invisible Truth Of New Orleans Policing And Culture, Angel Dainell Johnson
Senior Projects Spring 2024
Based on the stories of residents of New Orleanians, this research aims to understand the multidimensional conflicts that Black girls in New Orleans face, in relation to understanding the crime wave that has engulfed the city. Through exploring the political, social, and economic infrastructures that set up environmental enclosures of urban violence, vanishment, and neglect in Black community, I am offering insight into a city that is often forgotten. Over all, I argue that the spike in girls committing crime in New Orleans has been a result of a long history of institutional abandonment and provide avenues for the Black …

Albania's Development: Exploring State Ownership, Corruption, And The Impacts Of Mass Migration, And The Labor Market, Marsela Doko
Senior Projects Spring 2024
The development of Albania is seen through various factors. I explore the topics of development through state ownership both during (under the rule of Enver Hoxha) and after his death and the fall of communism, corruption, emigration, and the labor market. The high rates of privatization of property have led many parts of the country to become inaccessible and unaffordable for the average citizens. Additionally, the high rates of corruption that were in part due to the history of communism limit the change possible and the rate that could help the country's development. Furthermore, the mass migration of over 40% …
Never Left The Dreaming: A Study Of Decolonization And Enchantment, Javin R. Lee-Lobel
Never Left The Dreaming: A Study Of Decolonization And Enchantment, Javin R. Lee-Lobel
Senior Projects Spring 2024
There is a belief in contemporary left politics that we must re-enchant the world because it has been disenchanted by coloniality: the meanings and sacredness which uphold community and sustain harmony with the earth have been drained through the ‘Western’ project of colonization, modernization, and capitalism. The problem with this belief is that we cannot re-enchant what we understand to be inherently disenchanted.
Via the ontological turn in anthropology, an understanding of the world emerges that is not disenchanted, but inherently imbued with meanings. Enchantment is not applied upon or removed from nonhuman bodies by human minds but is woven …
