Gender Differences On The Wais-R Performance Scale With Young Deaf Adults, Allan Ensor, Leadelle Phelps
Gender Differences On The Wais-R Performance Scale With Young Deaf Adults, Allan Ensor, Leadelle Phelps
JADARA
The WAIS-R Performance Scale was administered to185 hearing-impaired young adults (80 females and 105 males) having a mean age of 18.6 years (SD .97). All participants were considered to have a prelingual hearing loss that ranged from moderate to profound. The five sub-tests and performance IQ (PIQ) were evaluated by t-test computations and principal factor analyses. The only significant mean score difference occurred with the Digit Symbol subtest where the female subjects outperformed their male counter parts by a mean difference of 1.76 points (t=-4.76, p < .0001). Subtest inter-correlational results suggest that adult deaf males demonstrated better spatial analysis and synthesis skills while the females performed better at visual-motor coordination and speed tasks. A principal factor analysis procedure yielded only one factor for each sex. The high degree of factorial similarity between the male and female samples indicated that the underlying construct being measured by the WAIS-R Performance subtests does not differ by gender.

Cochlear Implants In The Workplace: A Nationwide Survey, M. B. Dinner, R. S. Ackley, D. J. Lubinski, T. J. Balkany, P. Reeder, L. Genert
JADARA
A nation wide survey of cochlear implant recipients was conducted to study how implants may impact people at work. Using a self-reporting questionnaire, recipients using four cochlear implant designs were surveyed about spoken communication on the job, overall job performance, job satisfaction, confidence in job retention and in seeking new employment, job promotion, and income. Of the implant recipients using their implants at work (106 people), the majority used their implants during all work hours and reported positive changes in their job situations. The survey results suggest that cochlear implants may help in mitigating functional limitations in the workplace resulting …

Parent-Focused Interventions In Economically Developing Countries, Jen Jackson, Syeda Kashfee Ahmed, Toby Carslake, Petra Lietz
Parent-Focused Interventions In Economically Developing Countries, Jen Jackson, Syeda Kashfee Ahmed, Toby Carslake, Petra Lietz
Dr Jen Jackson
The authors conducted a scoping review of Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) interventions in economically developing countries between 1998 and 2017, aimed at improving children’s learning in the years before school. The review identified 37 parent-focused studies from 19 countries which provide an evidence base for parent-focused interventions that have both depth and geographical breadth. This policy note outlines characteristics of these interventions which contribute to changes in developmental outcomes for children. It found that of all ECEC interventions, the largest body of effectiveness evidence is available for parent-focused programs.

Medical Marijuana Policy Reform Reaches Florida: A Scoping Review, Khadesia Howell, Alexandria Washington, Paula M. Williams, Arlesia L. Mathis, John S. Luque
Florida Public Health Review
Background: Florida became the first state in the U.S. South to legalize the use of medical marijuana to treat a variety of health conditions including chronic pain, epilepsy, and spasticity symptoms from multiple sclerosis. While there are over 200,000 medical marijuana patients in Florida, there remain financial, psychological, and insurance coverage barriers which reduce access for many patients. Purpose: This scoping review, with a focus on state health policy, first describes some clinical studies examining the therapeutic benefits of medical marijuana. Next, there is a discussion of the Florida regulatory environment and major legislation. Also, the review describes how the …

Finding The Middle Ground In Collection Development: How Academic Law Librarians Can Shape Their Collections In Response To The Call For More Practice-Oriented Legal Education, Leslie A. Street, Amanda M. Runyon
Leslie A. Street
To examine how academic law libraries can respond to the call for more practice-oriented legal education, the authors compared trends in collection management decisions regarding secondary sources at academic and law firm libraries. The results of their survey are followed by recommendations about how academic and firm librarians can work together to best provide law students with materials they will need in practice.

Background: Dogs are ubiquitous in human society and attempts to manage their populations are common to most countries. Managing dog populations is achieved through a range of interventions to suit the dog population dynamics and dog ownership characteristics of the location, with a number of potential impacts or goals in mind. Impact assessment provides the opportunity for interventions to identify areas of inefficiencies for improvement and build evidence of positive change.
Methods: This scoping review collates 26 studies that have assessed the impacts of dog population management interventions.
Results: It reports the use of 29 indicators of change under 8 …

Andrew N. Rowan, DPhil
In November 2013, a group of international experts in animal research policy (n = 11) gathered in Vancouver, Canada, to discuss openness and accountability in animal research. The primary objective was to bring together participants from various jurisdictions (United States, Sweden, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Canada and the United Kingdom) to share practices regarding the governance of animals used in research, testing and education, with emphasis on the governance process followed, the methods of community engagement, and the balance of openness versus confidentiality. During the forum, participants came to a broad consensus on the need for: (a) evidence-based metrics to …
The Impact Of Statistical Learning On Language And Social Competency In Asd And Adhd: Divergent Findings, Kaitlyn M.A Parks
The Impact Of Statistical Learning On Language And Social Competency In Asd And Adhd: Divergent Findings, Kaitlyn M.A Parks
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Statistical learning is a process that allows individuals to extract regularities from the environment and plays an important role in language acquisition, speech segmentation, and aspects of social behaviour. Little is known about the contribution of statistical learning impairments on Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) related traits. The current study examined whether impairments in auditory and visual statistical learning are related to ASD and ADHD traits, language, and social competency. Decreased auditory, but not visual statistical learning abilities was related to increased autism traits and visual statistical learning and social competency abilities were mediated by language comprehension. …

Immigrant Perpetrators Of Domestic Homicide: Unique Risks And Service Needs, Randal David
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This integrated dissertation comprises of three studies exploring severe and/or lethal domestic violence among male immigrant perpetrators. The first study analyzed the differences between immigrant and Canadian-born perpetrators of domestic homicide using a sample of 186 cases of domestic homicide that occurred from 2002-2016 in Ontario; 93 perpetrators that were Canadian-born and 93 immigrant perpetrators. Results revealed sociodemographic differences between groups, such as immigrant perpetrators’ increased likelihood to reside in large urban areas, have children, and have a higher level of education.
Criminogenic differences were also identified between groups, with immigrant perpetrators less likely to have probation, parole, and bail …

Trauma-Informed School Practices: Building Expertise To Transform Schools, Anna A. Berardi Phd., Brenda Morton, Edd.
Open Textbooks
This textbook represents the combined insight and experience of Morton, a k12 educator, and Berardi, a psychotherapist, both of whom are also university educators with extensive work experience serving districts and their teachers seeking to incorporate trauma-informed principles into their school culture and classroom. The authors identify that the field of education is now ready to deepen its level of response to the paradigm shift created by advances in neuroscience and traumatology. Hence, the primary focus is on identifying and applying trauma-informed educator competencies needed to transform districts, schools, educators, classrooms, and the field of education itself, while also including …
