Animal Welfare And The Un’S Sustainable Development Goals (Sdgs), Beth Allgood

WellBeing News

In 2005, the UN agreed on a set of seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that included goals for Life in Water (SDG 15) and Life on Land (SDG 15). While these two goals provide an opening to address animal conservation and welfare, the International Fund for Animal Welfare has argued that the inclusion of animal welfare and conservation is vital for the successful achievement of the SDGs.

Citation Rates For Ohio State Graduate Theses & Dissertations: Trends, Surprises, And Inaccuracies, Daniel S. Dotson Sep 2019

Citation Rates For Ohio State Graduate Theses & Dissertations: Trends, Surprises, And Inaccuracies, Daniel S. Dotson

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The Ohio State University’s holdings of graduate theses and dissertations were examined to determine if highly-downloaded titles tended to be highly-cited. The study found that citation rates were highly variable and did not necessarily correspond to download rates. This included very highly downloaded titles with low citation rates, and lesser-downloaded titles with high citation rates. The study found that Google Scholar, which was used to identify citation rates, too often counts theses and dissertations as a version of a different work with the same title, even if it is another format and sometimes with additional authors. This article will share …

Conceptualizing Discursive Analysis As A Culturally Contextualized Activity, Stephen Baffour Adjei Sep 2019

Conceptualizing Discursive Analysis As A Culturally Contextualized Activity, Stephen Baffour Adjei

The Qualitative Report

Discursive psychology recognizes the primacy of the social and relational nature of human life. Research participants whose discourses (empirical data) we analyze do not exist independent of material and social world. In this paper, I attempt to develop an understanding of discursive analysis of social and psychological phenomena as a culturally contextualized activity in which discursive researchers analyze and interpret participants’ discourses in the light of the cultural context in which the discourses are embedded. First, I provide a brief background to discursive psychology. Second, I discuss the cultural embeddedness of discursive analysis. I then conceptualize discursive data analysis as …

An Elixir For Veteran Teachers: The Power Of Social Connections In Keeping These Teachers Passionate And Enthusiastic In Their Work, Peter Francis Prout, Geoffrey M. Lowe Dr, Christina C. Gray, Sarah Jefferson Sep 2019

An Elixir For Veteran Teachers: The Power Of Social Connections In Keeping These Teachers Passionate And Enthusiastic In Their Work, Peter Francis Prout, Geoffrey M. Lowe Dr, Christina C. Gray, Sarah Jefferson

The Qualitative Report

This article is based upon the premise that there are many veteran teachers who maintain positive attitudes towards teaching throughout their careers. According to The Grant Study (Waldinger, 2015), positive attitudes towards life and work stem from close relationships and adaptive behaviours that people engage in throughout adult life. This article describes a study undertaken in Australia which revealed that, in line with Grant Study findings, positive veteran teachers (aged 40-70+ years) build and maintain supportive social connections among colleagues in their school and others outside school, plus spouse (or long-term partner) and close family, that contribute to their sense …

A “Highdeeply” Review Of Johnny Saldaña’S Thinking Qualitatively: Methods Of Mind, Alexandra Ch Nowakowski Sep 2019

A “Highdeeply” Review Of Johnny Saldaña’S Thinking Qualitatively: Methods Of Mind, Alexandra Ch Nowakowski

The Qualitative Report

More than a book about conducting qualitative research, Johnny Saldaña in Thinking Qualitatively: Methods of Mind asks readers to think “highdeeply,” so they organize their thinking about how to live their best lives through the process of qualitative inquiry. To do so, Saldaña transforms the concept of person-centered qualitative inquiry into a concrete entity with structured exercises and practical examples. Saldaña contributions with this work all center on the process of conscious qualitative reflection as a tool for synthetic understanding of the world around us.

Maximizing The Impact Of Cognitive Interventions Via Learning And Socio-Motivational Factors, Carla M. Strickland-Hughes, Rachel Wu

Carla Strickland-Hughes

Targeting learning and socio-motivational factors can enhance the practical impact of interventions. Katz will review studies that examine the role of motivational processes in cognitive interventions and discuss how this work might inform improvements to both cognitive training and experiments designed to investigate their efficacy. Strickland-Hughes will explore the interplay of self-regulatory factors, such as self-evaluative beliefs, and stereotypes in memory strategy training for middle-aged and older adults. Wu will discuss results from a 15-week intervention with older adults engaging in frequent, varied learning of new difficult skills and the potential to strengthen cognitive skills and promote functional independence.

The Effects Of Health-Promoting Signs Encouraging Stair Use In Parking Structures, Fiona T. Tang, Vincent Berardi, Benjamin D. Rosenberg Sep 2019

The Effects Of Health-Promoting Signs Encouraging Stair Use In Parking Structures, Fiona T. Tang, Vincent Berardi, Benjamin D. Rosenberg

Benjamin Rosenberg

This research study aims to promote physical activity by encouraging stair use rather than elevators using persuasive point-of-choice prompts. The current investigation is comprised of two sub-studies: pilot testing, which we have completed; and the main study, which will be conducted in the fall. While most studies in this area use observation to count pedestrian traffic, a novel component of the current research is that we will use a pressure mat to measure stair and elevator use. As such, before completing the main study, we completed two pilot studies to test the feasibility of the mat technology and the messaging …

Effects Of Creep Feeding And Its Interactions With Other Factors On The Performance Of Meat Goat Kids And Dams When Managed On Pasture, Emily G. Hayes, Raquel V. Lourençon, Richard Browning Jr.

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

Creep feeding and its possible interactions with other influential factors (genetics, litter type, and sex) for weaning traits were studied in meat goat kids and their dams. Kids across 3 yr were creep fed (254 kids; 5 pens) or not creep fed (255 kids; 5 pens) from 30 to 90 d of age. Creep-fed kids had higher (P ≤ 0.05) preweaning average daily weight gain and weaning weights (113.1 ± 13.0 g/d; 15.0 ± 0.8 kg) than kids not creep fed (99.8 ± 13.1 g/d; 14.0 ± 0.8 kg). However, financial returns were not higher (P > 0.05) for …

Holy Listening In Reference Work: A Sacred Aspect Of The Christian Librarian’S Calling, Cynthia Strong Sep 2019

Holy Listening In Reference Work: A Sacred Aspect Of The Christian Librarian’S Calling, Cynthia Strong

SPU Works

Along with all Christians, I live out a vocation – both a general and a missional calling. More specifically, as a Christian who is a librarian, my missional calling is to serve my patrons. In my experience, the best way that I can fulfill this service is by listening. As Dietrich Bonhoeffer writes in Life Together, “[t]he first service one owes to others in the community involves listening to them” (1954, p. 97).

Many pastors and spiritual directors write on the practice and importance of listening for the work they perform. The listening they do is shaped by their …

Durables And Lemons: Private Information And The Market For Cars, Richard Blundell, Ran Gu, Søren Leth-Petersen, Hamish Low, Costas Meghir Sep 2019

Durables And Lemons: Private Information And The Market For Cars, Richard Blundell, Ran Gu, Søren Leth-Petersen, Hamish Low, Costas Meghir

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We specify an equilibrium model of car ownership with private information where individuals sell and purchase new and second-hand cars over their life-cycle. This private information introduces a transaction cost, distorts the market and reduces the value of a car as a savings instrument. We estimate the model using Danish linked registry data on car ownership, income and wealth. The transaction cost, which we term the lemons penalty, is estimated to be 18% of the price in the first year of ownership, declining with the length of ownership. It leads to large reductions in the turnover of cars and in …

Community-Based Tourism Development As Gendered Political Space: A Feminist Geographical Perspective, Neha Nimble Sep 2019

Community-Based Tourism Development As Gendered Political Space: A Feminist Geographical Perspective, Neha Nimble

Journal of Interdisciplinary Feminist Thought

Drawing from a doctoral thesis on the construction of gender in livelihoods, this paper analyzes women’s experiences of participation in a local decentralized governance body (Village Tourism Development Committee) within a State implemented community based rural tourism development program that aims at political empowerment of women and the marginalised. Building a theoretical framework located in Feminist Political Geography, this paper adds to the knowledge on the gendered nature of space by examining the unexplored role of local decentralized governance and development agencies as political space in which culturally and historically embedded gender and caste roles intersect to impact the outcome …

Women’S Political Participation And Grassroots Democratic Sustainability In Osun State, Nigeria (2010-2015), Isola Abidemi Abiola

Journal of Interdisciplinary Feminist Thought

Studies on Osun State and women's representation in both the federal and state levels and in the legislative and executive arms of government indicated it has the second highest women's representation in South West, Nigeria. This gives an impression that democracy is being sustained at the grassroots. However, the fact on the ground is to the contrary, especially when compared with their male counterparts and their representation in government. Therefore, this study explores women's political participation and grassroots democratic sustainability in Osun State, Nigeria from 1999 to 2015.This study adopted survey research design. Data were collected through questionnaires and unstructured …
