Institutional Quality, Financial Inclusion And Inclusive Growth: Causality Evidence From Nigeria, G. O. Olanrewaju, S. A. Tella, B. A. Adesoye

Economic and Financial Review

The study examines the causal interactions among the institutional, financial and inclusive growth variables by employing Toda-Yamamoto (TY) Granger non-causality test within the augmented VAR framework. Annual time series, data from 1998 to 2017, were used. The TY analysis showed that all the variables, with the exception of financial inclusion index, Granger-caused inclusive growth, but without any evidence of feedback. However, a bidirectional causal relationship was found between inclusive finance and the interaction of institutional quality and financial inclusion. Thus, the null hypothesis of block exogeneity can be refuted when real GDP per person employed (RGDPE) is taken as the …

Scale And Sense Of Place Among Urban Dwellers, Nicole M. Ardoin, Rachelle K. Gould, Heather Lukacs, Carly C. Sponarski, Janel S. Schuh Sep 2019

Scale And Sense Of Place Among Urban Dwellers, Nicole M. Ardoin, Rachelle K. Gould, Heather Lukacs, Carly C. Sponarski, Janel S. Schuh

Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources Faculty Publications

Place connections are core to being human: Every person lives in, and thus has direct experience of, at least one place and likely of numerous places throughout a lifetime. Sense of place—or the meanings, knowledge, and bonds that arise from the biophysical, social, and political–economic aspects of places—in turn influences people's interactions with those places. Of particular interest to researchers, practitioners, and policymakers, such interactions can impact place-protective, stewardship, or conservation behaviors. However, how sense of place develops and what it represents is shifting in today's rapidly urbanizing, globalizing world. Especially when considering the integrated social–ecological context, questions related to …

Relational Inquiry: Seven-Years Practicing Seven Relationships, Gregg Lahood Sep 2019

Relational Inquiry: Seven-Years Practicing Seven Relationships, Gregg Lahood

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive

Greetings from Byron Bay—what follows is a postcard version of a seven-year cycle of relational inquiry retrospectively nicknamed The Rainbow of Desire. I outline our practices, explore five basic fields in our approach to new paradigm research, and present an updated version of my seven relationships model as a heuristic for understanding and participating in relational inquiry. As a contemporary spiritual expression, with roots in the Greek-Socratic tradition of research, and informed by Gestalt practice (not psychotherapy), this account may also be of value for persons interested in further Gestalt-transpersonal inquiry, research, and learning.

Transpersonal Dimensions In Islamic Spirituality, Nikos Yiangou Sep 2019

Transpersonal Dimensions In Islamic Spirituality, Nikos Yiangou

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive

The Sufi tradition that arose within Islam describes a compelling and varied map of the self and its transformations. Over the span of a millennium of practice and discourse, Sufis have explored and detailed the stages of the journey of selftransformation towards their ultimate aim of union with the One. Their models of the spiritual journey and of the emergent transpersonal self, extensively contextualized in phenomenology, epistemology, theology and ontology, offer singular insights into a richly detailed holistic psychology of self-realization and the making of the complete human.

Changes In Scholarly Reading In Finland Over A Decade: Influences Of E-Journals And Social Media, Elina Late, Carol Tenopir, Sanna Talja, Lisa Christian Sep 2019

Changes In Scholarly Reading In Finland Over A Decade: Influences Of E-Journals And Social Media, Elina Late, Carol Tenopir, Sanna Talja, Lisa Christian

School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works

Nationwide surveys of researchers in Finland in 2007 and 2016 distributed with the assistance of FinELib, the Finnish national consortium, show that researchers use a growing range of sources to find and access scholarly articles and that some reading patterns are changing. The percentage of articles found by searching and browsing are decreasing, while researchers are using more social ways to locate articles. Research social networking sites are rated as important to their work. They read more onscreen, although still print some material out for final reading. Reading patterns for books are different, as researchers still rely more on printed …

Teaching Students To Critically Evaluate Textbooks, Christopher Mchale, Ian Mcdermott, Steven Ovadia Sep 2019

Teaching Students To Critically Evaluate Textbooks, Christopher Mchale, Ian Mcdermott, Steven Ovadia

Publications and Research

This chapter is a case study describing how library faculty combined service learning and information literacy to help students evaluate textbooks, comparing commercial ones to Open Education Resources. The underlying idea was to give students not only a scholarly grounding that would help them as they move through their academic careers but also a practical vocational orientation to help them succeed in the workforce and, hopefully, become future contributors to the free culture movement.

Communication Channel Preferences: A Descriptive Audience Segmentation Evaluation, Kevan W. Lamm, Abigail Borron, Jessica Holt, Alexa J. Lamm Sep 2019

Communication Channel Preferences: A Descriptive Audience Segmentation Evaluation, Kevan W. Lamm, Abigail Borron, Jessica Holt, Alexa J. Lamm

Journal of Applied Communications

For over 70 years the use of opinion leaders in a two-step communication process has been employed and validated. However, despite the accepted importance of communicating with opinion leaders as a means to cascade information to opinion leaders’ networks of influence there have been few empirical studies specifically examining agricultural and natural resource opinion leader communication channel preferences, particularly from an audience segmentation perspective. The results reported in the study capitalize on previous research data examined from a unique perspective. Specifically, communication channel preferences were analyzed according to opinion leader self-reported demographic categories serving as audience segments. Associations between sex, …

Adaptation Of The Systematic Review Framework To The Assessment Of Toxicological Test Methods: Challenges And Lessons Learned With The Zebrafish Embryotoxicity Test, Martin L. Stephens, Sevcan Gül Akgün-Ölmez, Sebastian Hoffman, Rob De Vries, Burkhard Flick, Thomas Hartung, Manoj Lalu, Alexandra Maertens, Hilda Witters, Robert Wright, Katya Tsaioun

Toxicology and Animal Models in Research Collection

Systematic review methodology is a means of addressing specific questions through structured, consistent, and transparent examinations of the relevant scientific evidence. This methodology has been used to advantage in clinical medicine, and is being adapted for use in other disciplines. Although some applications to toxicology have been explored, especially for hazard identification, the present preparatory study is, to our knowledge, the first attempt to adapt it to the assessment of toxicological test methods. As our test case, we chose the zebrafish embryotoxicity test (ZET) for developmental toxicity and its mammalian counterpart, the standard mammalian prenatal development toxicity study, focusing the …

Louisiana-Recognized Native American Tribal Needs Assessment: Understanding The Perceptions, Resources, And Challenges Involving Opioid Use Disorder, Judith L. Rhodes, Kandra Colomb, Jada Thomas-Smith

Reports

Executive Summary The Social Research and Evaluation Center (SREC) at the Louisiana State University, College of Human Sciences and Education engaged Louisiana-recognized tribes to investigate their perceptions, resources, and challenges around the Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) crisis in their communities. The outreach and investigative process resulted in attending tribal council meetings, conducting key stakeholder interviews, and administering tribal listening sessions. The discussions and listening sessions facilitated open dialogue about the nature of OUD, prevention, treatment, and recovery as well as identification of strengths and challenges experienced by tribal communities. Tribal citizens reported limited knowledge about help for those experiencing addiction. …

Better Together: Improving Food Security And Nutrition By Linking Market And Food Systems, Martha Cruz Zuinga, Monty L. Lynn, Elly Kaganzi Mwesigwa, Dan Norell, Vidhya Sriram, Emmanuel Tumusiime Sep 2019

Better Together: Improving Food Security And Nutrition By Linking Market And Food Systems, Martha Cruz Zuinga, Monty L. Lynn, Elly Kaganzi Mwesigwa, Dan Norell, Vidhya Sriram, Emmanuel Tumusiime

Management Sciences

Market-based approaches to food security often increase agricultural productivity and income yet sometimes fail to enhance nutrition. When food security programming combines market and food systems with a specific focus on women and girls, economic and nutrition outcomes benefit. We identify distinctive and shared elements from market and food systems and highlight how they enhance nutrition outcomes when they are combined. We describe food security programming by CARE and World Vision in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Madagascar, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, demonstrating nutrition gains in food insecure households.

Evaluating Zotero, Sherpa/Romeo, And Unpaywall In An Institutional Repository Workflow, Ashley D.R. Sergiadis Sep 2019

Evaluating Zotero, Sherpa/Romeo, And Unpaywall In An Institutional Repository Workflow, Ashley D.R. Sergiadis

ETSU Faculty Works

East Tennessee State University developed a workflow to add journal publications to their institutional repository and faculty profiles using three tools: Zotero for entering metadata, SHERPA/RoMEO for checking copyright permissions, and Unpaywall for locating full-text documents. This study evaluates availability and accuracy of the information and documents provided by Zotero, SHERPA/RoMEO, and Unpaywall for journal publications in four disciplines. The tools were less successful with works authored by arts and humanities and education faculty in comparison to works authored by medicine and health sciences and social and behavioral sciences faculty. The findings suggest that publisher practices contributed to the disciplinary …

Towards An Institutional Research Data Policy: Taking A Journey At Singapore Management University, Danping Dong, Pin Pin Yeo

Research Collection Library

In recent years, there has been growing interest on Research Data Management, not only from the academic community but also from governments, funders, publishers and research institutions. Research data is increasingly recognized as a valuable output arising out of research activities therefore an asset. It is recognized as a critical evidence in supporting and validating published research claims in the light of an imminent ‘reproducibility crisis’ in some scientific disciplines.

In this presentation, we will share the experiences and learnings in developing and supporting the implementation of a Research Data Policy at Singapore Management University (SMU) in collaboration with our …

Energy Storage Roadmap For Northeast Ohio 2019: Executive Summary, Mark Henning, Andrew R. Thomas Sep 2019

Energy Storage Roadmap For Northeast Ohio 2019: Executive Summary, Mark Henning, Andrew R. Thomas

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

A great deal has changed in the energy storage industry since 2011. The way in which people interact with energy in living our lives has continued to undergo fundamental shifts that have become ever more conspicuous. The changing dynamics of not only how the energy we use is generated, but also of how and when it must be deployed to meet our increasing—and increasingly complex—demand for electric power are accelerating the need for more advanced, economical forms of energy storage.

This 2019 Energy Storage Roadmap examines the trends that are driving growth in energy storage for the electric power grid, …

A Vision-Based Model Of Crowd Navigation, Gregory C. Dachner Sep 2019

A Vision-Based Model Of Crowd Navigation, Gregory C. Dachner

Link Foundation Modeling, Simulation and Training Fellowship Reports

Humans navigate crowds daily. This can range from quick interactions between pedestrians on the sidewalk to jostling through a busy train station. Research in fields diverse as computer graphics, physics, evacuation planning, and mathematical biology have simulated emergent collective behavior in flocks, schools, and crowds (Couzin et al., 2002; Helbing & Molnár, 1995; Reynolds, 1987; Vicsek & Zafeiris, 2012). However, few of these models are built from experimental evidence about the visual information that governs human pedestrian behaviors in naturalistic environments. This project, funded by the Link Foundation, empirically studied and computationally modeled how individuals in a crowd use visual …

The Other America: Inequality, Taxes, And The Very Rich, Jenny Bourne Sep 2019

The Other America: Inequality, Taxes, And The Very Rich, Jenny Bourne

Department of Economics Working Paper Series

Effective tax rates are lower than statutory rates for wealthy people because they receive much income from capital, capital income receives preferential treatment, and recognition of capital

income is often voluntary. I calculate taxes paid as a percentage of wealth using linked estate- income data. Single itemizers with wealth of at least $2 million in 2007 paid less than 3 percent

of wealth in annual taxes, with the richest paying the smallest fraction. Changes enacted in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 favor those at the top. The estate tax remains one tool that may curb extreme wealth …
