Spatiotemporal Analysis In Monitoring Landscape Dynamic Patterns In Tropical Peat Ecosystem (Study In Tebing Tinggi Island, Riau, Indonesia), Dheny Sampurno
Spatiotemporal Analysis In Monitoring Landscape Dynamic Patterns In Tropical Peat Ecosystem (Study In Tebing Tinggi Island, Riau, Indonesia), Dheny Sampurno
Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development
The increasing deforestation rate in the tropical peat landscape is impacting the sustainability of the peat ecosystem. Previous studies have monitored the deforestation on tropical forest using Landsat imagery. The analysis of forest landscape dynamics is crucial in understanding the functions of the sustainable ecosystem and to support sustainable development goals. The government controls the peat ecosystem function (PEF) based on the Indonesian Government Regulation No. 71/2014. However, a booming sago industry has resulted in smallholders establishing farms and expanding into the peatland. In this study, we conducted a spatiotemporal analysis of land use/cover changes based on a series of …

Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development
The development of the world demands changes in the environment from time to time, and this condition can not be avoided, for that the academic world is required to always be ready and watchful for this condition. This challenge makes the Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development (JESSD) continue to be consistent with the focus of environmental studies until now. Starting with the inaugural edition in 2018, JESSD continues to be aware and focus on environmental studies and sustainable development in developing countries, especially for Southeast Asia countries. In this issue of Volume 2 Issue 1, we present eight …

A Quantitative Dynamic Model For Managing Litter Abundance In The Trash Trap Of An Urban Lake In Indonesia, Muhammad Muhsin, Herr Soeryantono
Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development
In Indonesia, urban litter is threatening the role of urban lakes as a part of green infrastructures in cities. To overcome this issue, Kenanga Lake—an urban lake with a surface area of 2.8 ha located within the Universitas Indonesia Campus—has been equipped with a trash trap unit on its inlet. However, the large amount of litter and its unpredictable pattern have made trash trap management difficult. The previous study illustrated the conceptual diagram of this problem. As a continuation in terms of looking further for sustainable solutions to this problem, this study aimed to establish its quantitative dynamic model, which …
Interrogating The Construction And Representations Of Criminalized Women In The Academic Social Work Literature: A Critical Discourse Analysis, Sandra Marie Leotti
Interrogating The Construction And Representations Of Criminalized Women In The Academic Social Work Literature: A Critical Discourse Analysis, Sandra Marie Leotti
Dissertations and Theses
In the United States today, there are 2.3 million people behind bars in jails and prisons. Mass incarceration has swept up the United States to such a degree that we are known globally for holding more people in correctional facilities than any other country in the world. Although women have always, and still do, reflect a smaller proportion of the correctional population, over the last 40 years, their rates of criminalization and imprisonment have far outpaced that of men's. Drastic increases in the criminalization of women are intimately connected to the entrenchment of social disadvantage enabled under neoliberal globalization. Neoliberal …

The Challenge Of Managing Mine Action In Jordan, Hrh Prince Mired R.Z. Al-Hussein
The Challenge Of Managing Mine Action In Jordan, Hrh Prince Mired R.Z. Al-Hussein
The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
Over the course of two decades, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan worked diligently to rid itself of landmines despite monumental challenges. In comparison to other mine-affected countries, the difficulties that Jordan faced may have been miniscule, but for a developing country with minimal natural resources in a very volatile region of the world, the task was enormous. The initial estimate of landmines buried in Jordanian territory was over 300,000, the vast majority of which were laid by the Jordanian military along the kingdom’s western border after the 1967 Arab– Israeli War and along its northern border after the Syrian incursion …

Ammunition Stockpile Management: A Global Challenge Requiring Global Responses, Nora Allgaier, Samuel Paunila
Ammunition Stockpile Management: A Global Challenge Requiring Global Responses, Nora Allgaier, Samuel Paunila
The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
Ageing, unstable, and excess conventional ammunition stockpiles pose the dual risk of accidental explosion at munition sites and diversion to illicit markets, thereby constituting a significant danger to public safety and security. More than half of the world’s countries have experienced an ammunition storage area explosion over the past decades, resulting in severe humanitarian and socioeconomic consequences.1 Thousands of people have been killed, injured, and displaced, and the livelihoods of entire communities have been disrupted. The humanitarian impact of unintended explosions is amplified when they occur in urban areas, as illustrated by ammunition depot explosions in a crowded area …

The Oppressive Pressures Of Globalization And Neoliberalism On Mexican Maquiladora Garment Workers, Jenna Demeter
The Oppressive Pressures Of Globalization And Neoliberalism On Mexican Maquiladora Garment Workers, Jenna Demeter
Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee
The international economic trends of globalization and neoliberalism have exposed and enabled the exploitation of Mexican workers, especially women in the maquiladora garment industry. During the 1950s, globalization gave rise to the new international division of labor and transnational corporations (TNCs) that have offshored labor-intensive phases of production to developing countries, many of which have pursued export-led industrialization. Export processing in Mexico was encouraged in the 1960s by Item 807 of the U.S. Tariff Code and Mexico’s Border Industrialization Program. Especially following the Latin American debt crisis of the 1980s, advanced capitalist countries and International Financial Institutions foisted neoliberal structural …
Tennessee's Promise: Education For All?, Tristan M. Hightower
Tennessee's Promise: Education For All?, Tristan M. Hightower
Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee
Access to education has been at the forefront of public policy issues over the past several years. In order to combat relatively low rates of college attainment, Tennessee legislators implemented the Tennessee Promise program. It operates by providing financial aid for any direct costs not covered by students’ grants and scholarships. Notably, the program is not applicable to four-year degree programs; students wishing to utilize the funds must attend select schools that offer certificates and associate’s degrees. Community colleges are the most popular. While a boost in community college attendance has occurred, and more people will likely graduate with an …

Lidar-Based Sinkhole Detection And Mapping In Knox County, Tennessee, J Clint Shannon, David Moore, Yingkui Li, Cathy Olsen
Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee
Sinkholes are one of the major causes of damage to roads, buildings, and other infrastructure throughout the US. Sinkholes near or on roads are especially costly and occasionally deadly. Knox County and much of East Tennessee are located within karst areas (comprised of porous and soluble limestone and dolomite), deeming it at risk for sinkholes. Currently, Knox County uses contour maps to manually identify sinkholes. Supported by a geographic information system (GIS), we developed a streamlined model to identify the locations and extents of potential sinkholes using 1.3-ft resolution LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) data and applied it to the …
An Analytical Study About The Dialectical Use Of Statistical Significance In Psychological And Educational Research, عايش صباح Dr
An Analytical Study About The Dialectical Use Of Statistical Significance In Psychological And Educational Research, عايش صباح Dr
International Journal for Research in Education
The statistical significance has been adopted more than 300 years ago, It has served an important purpose in promoting research in social sciences, however, there has been much controversy over the misuse and interpretation of the statistical significance test.Compelling criticisms of statistical significance testing can be found in virtually all areas of the social and life sciences, economics, sociology, education and psychology. Because it is the overwhelmingly dominant statistical method in these sciences, criticisms need to be taken seriously.
Yet, after half a century of cogent arguments against statistical significance and calls to adopt alternative practices some disciplines, such as …

Optimizing Gait Outcomes In Parkinson's Disease With Auditory Cues: The Effects Of Synchronization, Groove, And Beat Perception Ability, Emily A. Ready
Optimizing Gait Outcomes In Parkinson's Disease With Auditory Cues: The Effects Of Synchronization, Groove, And Beat Perception Ability, Emily A. Ready
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This dissertation explores a common, rehabilitative strategy for mitigating gait impairments in Parkinson’s disease (PD) called Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation (RAS). The effects of this intervention on gait in PD are well documented but highly variable, which poses difficulty for appropriate therapeutic application. Part of this variability may be related to individual musical abilities, such as beat perception accuracy, as most RAS interventions involve synchronizing with a beat. However, music is complex and variable. Therefore, factors inherent in the music itself may play a role in these differences, such as how much the music makes you want to move (groove), or …
