Transitioning To All Digital Theses Deposits, Todd Bruns
Digital Commons+ Great Lakes User Group 2019 Meeting
Eastern Illinois University has utilized a moderated deposit method for incorporating theses into our institutional repository, The Keep: Students deliver print copies of their thesis to the library, which are then scanned, digitized, and uploaded to our catalog and the IR. Over the course of the past six months we have worked toward transitioning to all digital uploading. This discussion presents lessons learned and developed work-arounds that may benefit other institutions moving in the same direction.

Long Road To Capturing All Dissertations And Theses, Maira Bundza
Digital Commons+ Great Lakes User Group 2019 Meeting
Western Michigan University started its repository in 2011 and approached the Graduate College about entering dissertations and master's theses. A workflow evolved for current theses, but what about the older ones? The goal has been to get every dissertation and theses written at Western into the repository. It has been a long and winding road, but the goal is in sight.
The Myths That Make Us: An Examination Of Canadian National Identity, Shannon Lodoen
The Myths That Make Us: An Examination Of Canadian National Identity, Shannon Lodoen
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This thesis uses Barthes’ Mythologies as a framework to examine the ways in which the Canadian nation has been mythologized, exploring how this mythologization affects our sense of national identity. Because, as Barthes says, the ultimate goal of myth is to transform history into nature, it is necessary to delve into Canada’s past in order to understand when, why, and how it has become the nation it is today. This will involve tracing some key aspects of Canadian history, society, and pop culture from Canada’s earliest days to current times to uncover the “true origins” of the naturalized, taken-for-granted elements …

The Role Of Child Protection Services In Preventing Child And Adult Domestic Homicides: Missed Opportunities And Barriers To Change, Laura Olszowy
The Role Of Child Protection Services In Preventing Child And Adult Domestic Homicides: Missed Opportunities And Barriers To Change, Laura Olszowy
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This dissertation involves three studies exploring the risks children face living with domestic violence (DV) and the critical role of child protection services (CPS) in assessing risk in DV cases. The first study examined the involvement of CPS before domestic homicides cases as reviewed by the Ontario Domestic Violence Death Review Committee (DVDRC). One in five of the homicide cases where children were present in the family system had prior involvement with CPS. The underlying themes of DVDRC recommendations directed to the child welfare sector highlighted the need for enhanced ongoing services to promote safety and hold perpetrators accountable, specialized …

A Luminous Haze; Or How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love Plagiarism, Todd Richardson
Louise Pound: A Folklore and Literature Miscellany
“I really was never any more than what I was,” Bob Dylan writes in his autobiography Chronicles, “a folk musician who gazed into the gray mist with tear-blinded eyes and made up songs that floated in a luminous haze.” I’d call his proclamation inefficient if that didn’t imply that it gets a job done, albeit poorly. The sentence, rather, strikes me as grand-sounding balderdash. It begins with a promise of humility, after which it gradually evaporates into bleary images that never realize anything resembling actual meaning. On the whole, Dylan is exceedingly specific throughout Chronicles, recounting in detail …
The Great Games We Play: Fan Resistance And The Bbc Sherlock, Amanda Ewolt
The Great Games We Play: Fan Resistance And The Bbc Sherlock, Amanda Ewolt
Louise Pound: A Folklore and Literature Miscellany
Discontented with mainstream value systems, the Sherlock fandom is tireless in implementing various forms of resistance to question the balance of power and authority between producer, consumer, and text. One such method is slash fanfiction, which is both a tool for understanding and creating meaning from the source text and an act of defiance from those who feel marginalized by the dominant culture. Yet, I argue, Sherlock is a special case. Sherlock itself is a brilliant and intertextual rereading of Arthur Conan Doyle's original text; in other words, the show itself is elaborate fanfiction, which complicates the typical producer-fandom interaction …

Beasts And Bluebeards: Reader Reception, The Fairy Tale And Jane Eyre, Brittany Warman, Sara Cleto
Louise Pound: A Folklore and Literature Miscellany
The 19th-century novel Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë has been frequently mined for its folkloric allusions, particularly the fairy tales that haunt the narrative's characterization, plot, and atmosphere. Moving beyond so-called motif spotting, this article will explore the ways in which two of the main fairy tale intertexts of the novel - "Beauty and the Beast" and "Bluebeard" - duel for supremacy in the reader's mind, creating a tension that ultimately determines reception. Drawing primarily on narrative and reader- response theory, we will argue that the uncertainty regarding exactly which fairy tale is being called upon allows Brontë to create …

Introduction: What Kind Of Mother, Shelley Ingram
Louise Pound: A Folklore and Literature Miscellany
We’ve long studied the folklore in literature, but there is also literature in folklore, so we can also reverse our gaze to see how literature has been taken up and incorporated into the folk culture of groups – a book club, or a fandom, or a knitting circle. We study the ways in which authors use, for example, forms of folk narrative to structure a text, how they tap into the cultural knowledge of their myriad readerships to add depth to their pages. But we can also look inward to find certain ambiguities built into a text which invite or …

The Impact Of Exogenous Shocks And Heterogeneity On Demand And Preferences Environmental And Resource Goods In The Southwestern United States, Kara A. Walter
Economics ETDs
The 2018 IPCC report declared damages from climate change rapidly approaching. This dissertation consists of three empirical studies employing unique data sets and three econometric methods. First, I consider energy portfolios; I find that political affiliation is not the strongest driving factor of heterogeneity. Second, I examine the impact of observable characteristics in explaining preferences for the environment and regulation; I find opinion on climate change is an important factor and that omitting it results in changes to the significance of other factors. Finally, I study the impact of wildfires on visitation to national parks; I find that in the …

Increasing Faculty-Librarian Collaboration Through Critical Librarianship, Adrienne Gosselin, Mandi Goodsett
Michael Schwartz Library Publications
Through the lens of critical librarianship, librarians are becoming increasingly involved in social justice, civic engagement, and human rights issues. This paper examines the collaboration between a subject librarian and a faculty member in an assignment that engaged in Public Sphere Pedagogy (PSP), a teaching strategy with the goal of increasing students’ sense of civic agency and personal and social responsibility by connecting their classwork to public arenas; and project-based learning, wherein students develop a question to research and create projects that reflect their knowledge, which they share with a select audience.

Analysis Of The Demands Of A Student Athlete, Jaret Curtis
Honors Theses
College athletics has become a staple in our society today. In this analysis, I do a detailed analysis of the demands of a collegiate student athlete. To be more specific, I look at how participating in college athletics affects hirability post-graduation. I am currently a football student athlete here at WMU so I have first person access to this information and can relate very well to this topic. I obtained information by taking an autobiographical approach and applying my experiences as a student athlete and using outside research to answer the question of whether or not being a student athlete …

Medieval Narratives As Meta-Constructions Used In Creating Socio-Cultural Identity, Laurie A. Price
Medieval Narratives As Meta-Constructions Used In Creating Socio-Cultural Identity, Laurie A. Price
Linguistics ETDs
This study of the distribution and function of Historical Present (HP) in Old French, Old English, and Old Norse narratives combines the methods of cognitive linguistics and corpus-based discourse analysis with insights from work in sociolinguistics, linguistic anthropology and medieval studies. I show that HP, in combination with those other features, is a strategy to establish stance, a strategy that both constructs and reinforces a cultural persona. Although previous research on HP in narratives focused on the use of HP to foreground events and contrast marked vs unmarked events in narratives, my analysis shows that HP has an additional range …
