Financial Matters And Student Success Rates: Undergraduate Transfer Students At The University Of San Diego, Timothy Duran

M.A. in Higher Education Leadership: Action Research Projects

The purpose of this action research was to examine my ability to address the challenges transfer students at the University of San Diego face in navigating the financial aid (FA) process. The participants and I shared first-person narratives about the challenges in student success across a 3-cycle action research project. This research contributes to comprehending the impacts FA have on the transfer student population and how I, along with my colleagues, may better retain students through FA negotiations and processes. Findings from this research include varied responses on how transfer students felt supported during the matriculation process as well as …

Weighing Up Exercises On Phrasal Verbs: Retrieval Versus Trial-And-Error Practices, Brian Strong, Frank Boers Jul 2019

Weighing Up Exercises On Phrasal Verbs: Retrieval Versus Trial-And-Error Practices, Brian Strong, Frank Boers

Education Publications

EFL textbooks and internet resources exhibit various formats and implementations of exercises on phrasal verbs. The experimental study reported here examines whether some of these might be more effective than others. EFL learners at a university in Japan were randomly assigned to four treatment groups. Two groups were presented first with phrasal verbs and their meaning before they were prompted to retrieve the particles from memory. The difference between these two retrieval groups was that one group studied and then retrieved items one at a time, while the other group studied and retrieved them in sets. The two other groups …

The Ultimate Survey: Asking One Question At A Time To Get Feedback From Library Users, Leticia Camacho, Brian Wages, Taylor Harris Jul 2019

The Ultimate Survey: Asking One Question At A Time To Get Feedback From Library Users, Leticia Camacho, Brian Wages, Taylor Harris

Faculty Publications

Libraries use surveys and other instruments to gather feedback from their users. However, with competition from many other campus entities requesting input, how can survey fatigue be avoided? To gather this feedback, the Social Sciences Reference Desk utilized a short, fun and easy method. Each week for 10 weeks during the fall semester of 2017, the reference assistants wrote a survey question on a whiteboard and provided sticky notes for patrons to write their answers. The survey provided valuable information about patrons’ needs and expectations. It also fostered changes that were easily implemented to improve the delivery of library services.

Smallholder Farmers Spend Credit Primarily On Food: Gender Differences And Food Security Implications In A Changing Climate, Marissa Carranza, Meredith T. Niles Jul 2019

Smallholder Farmers Spend Credit Primarily On Food: Gender Differences And Food Security Implications In A Changing Climate, Marissa Carranza, Meredith T. Niles

College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Faculty Publications

In many low-income nations agriculture is used as the primary source of income, which in the face of a changing climate, is known to be at considerable risk for the smallholder farmers that rely on it. Financial resources may enable smallholder farmers to implement adaptation practices and diversify income and investments, which has the potential to affect household income and food security. Here we explore relationships between access to different types of financial resources among male and female-headed households and women vs. men, use of financial resources, and its relationship to food security. We use data from the CGIAR Climate …

The Support Needed For Spouses Of Traumatic Brain Injury (Tbi) Survivors: An Exploration Into Resources And Reference Materials, Brigitte Espinet Jul 2019

The Support Needed For Spouses Of Traumatic Brain Injury (Tbi) Survivors: An Exploration Into Resources And Reference Materials, Brigitte Espinet

Master of Arts in Professional Writing Capstones

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is, indeed, an equal opportunity perpetrator. Of the millions of Americans who sustain a TBI each year, at least 230,000 people are hospitalized and survive, and more than 80,000 to 90,000 people experience the onset of long-term disability (“Report to Congress”). However, it would appear that the reference materials and resources available to those needing life guidance post-TBI are not at all commensurate with the incidence of its occurrence. More specifically, it seems the population most overlooked within the world of those affected by TBI is the partners of adult TBI victims.

Modeling The Determinants Of Equestrian Sport Medal Shares In The Olympic Games, Steven S. Vickner Ph.D., David Hess Msba Jul 2019

Modeling The Determinants Of Equestrian Sport Medal Shares In The Olympic Games, Steven S. Vickner Ph.D., David Hess Msba

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Historically, equestrian sport debuted in the 1900 summer Olympic Games with individual show jumping. After a hiatus, equestrian sport resumed in 1912 with both individual and team show jumping and eventing, as well as individual dressage. Team dressage was added in 1928. With the exception of its omission from the 1960 Olympic Games, 18 medals have since been sought after by top athletes from countries around the world every four years. This study measures those factors that statistically determine the share of the 18 medals obtained by country during the last consecutive seventeen summer Olympic Games.

The Laterality Of The Gallop Gait In Thoroughbred Racehorses, Paulette Cully, Brian Nielsen, Bryony Lancaster, Jessica Martin, Paul Mcgreevy Jul 2019

The Laterality Of The Gallop Gait In Thoroughbred Racehorses, Paulette Cully, Brian Nielsen, Bryony Lancaster, Jessica Martin, Paul Mcgreevy

Paul McGreevy, PhD

Laterality can be observed as side biases in locomotory behaviour which, in the horse, manifest inter alia as forelimb preferences, most notably in the gallop. The current study investigated possible leading-leg preferences at the population and individual level in Thoroughbred racehorses (n = 2095) making halt-to-gallop transitions. Videos of flat races in the UK (n = 350) were studied to record, for each horse, the lead-leg preference of the initial stride into gallop from the starting stalls. Races from clockwise (C) and anti-clockwise (AC) tracks were chosen alternately at random to ensure equal representation. Course direction, horse age and sex, …

Expectations For Dog Ownership: Perceived Physical, Mental And Psychosocial Health Consequences Among Prospective Adopters, Lauren Powell, Debbie Chia, Paul Mcgreevy, Anthony L. Podberscek, Kate M. Edwards, Brendon Neilly, Adam J. Guastella, Vanessa Lee, Emmanuel Stamatakis

Paul McGreevy, PhD

Dog ownership is popular worldwide, with most human-dog dyads forming successful attachment bonds. However, millions of dogs are surrendered to animal shelters annually, possibly due to mismatches between owner expectations and the realities of dog ownership. The aim of the current study was to explore the benefits and challenges people expect from dog ownership and how these expectations vary with previous ownership history. An Australian-wide sample of 3465 prospective adopters completed a self-administered online questionnaire about the physical, mental and psychosocial health benefits and challenges they associated with dog ownership. Among the potential benefits, respondents expected increased walking (89%), happiness …

Application Of Fraser’S “Practical” Ethic In Veterinary Practice, And Its Compatibility With A “One Welfare” Framework, Anne Fawcett, Siobhan Mullan, Paul Mcgreevy Jul 2019

Application Of Fraser’S “Practical” Ethic In Veterinary Practice, And Its Compatibility With A “One Welfare” Framework, Anne Fawcett, Siobhan Mullan, Paul Mcgreevy

Paul McGreevy, PhD

Ethically challenging situations are common in veterinary practice, and they may be a source of moral stress, which may in turn impact the welfare of veterinarians. Despite recognition of the importance of ethical reasoning, some veterinary students may struggle to apply theoretical ethical frameworks. Fraser developed a “practical” ethic consisting of four principles that can be applied to ethically challenging situations. We apply Fraser’s “practical” ethic to three cases that veterinarians may encounter: animal hoarding, animal neglect, and treatment of wildlife. We argue that Fraser’s “practical” ethic is consistent with a One Welfare framework, and may have increasing currency for …

Paul McGreevy, PhD

Veterinarians are in a strong position of social influence on animal-related issues. Hence, veterinary schools have an opportunity to raise animal health and welfare standards by improving veterinary students’ animal welfare and ethics (AWE) education, including that related to animals used for scientific purposes. A survey of 818 students in the early, mid, and senior stages of their courses at all eight veterinary schools across Australia and New Zealand was undertaken on their first day of practice (or Day One Competences) to explore how veterinary students viewed the importance of their competence in the management of welfare and ethical decision-making …

Do Regime Types Matter - July .Docx, Margaret Slusher Jul 2019

Do Regime Types Matter - July .Docx, Margaret Slusher

Margaret Slusher

Abstract

Over the past several decades, numerous authoritarian regimes experienced nonviolent action campaigns with goals calling for regime change, secession, or anti-occupation; however, their responses greatly differed.  While many moved toward and established a democracy, others retained their current autocratic status or established a new form of autocracy.  Causal explanations by scholars for these phenomena abound; nonetheless, only a few take into consideration how rulers’ different characteristics, which can be categorized by regime type, may affect their decisions to democratize when challenged by peaceful campaigns.  Building on the theoretical argument that regime type can be a factor for explaining …
