When Databases Are No Longer An Option: Teaching Students About Open Access Resources For Business Information, Teresa Williams Jul 2019

When Databases Are No Longer An Option: Teaching Students About Open Access Resources For Business Information, Teresa Williams

Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)

Academic librarians spend a great deal of time teaching students how to use research databases to find business information, but the unfortunate reality is that students typically lose access to university subscription databases upon commencement. Without adequate training on reliable alternatives, new graduates can find themselves struggling to resolve their information needs as they transition into the business workplace.

To address this issue, the Business Librarian at Butler University Libraries created a Business Research Workshop (BRW) to teach students about open and public access resources for business information. What began a few years ago as a trial offering for five …

"A Deadly Game Of Russian Roulette": Exploring The Framing Of The Opioid Crisis In Canadian News Media, Lorna Ferguson

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The purpose of this study is to investigate the framing of the opioid crisis in Canadian news media. Using a 'frame analysis' approach (Entman 1993), the following questions are addressed: (1) How has the opioid crisis been framed in recent Canadian news articles?; (2) How often (frequency) are each of the frames documented in recent Canadian news articles?; and (3) What is the dominant frame? To answer these questions, this study draws on the results of a content analysis of 314 news articles published between January 2018 to December 2018. Data collected through systematic searches of the Canadian Major Dailies …

Curating Care: Creativity, Women’S Work, And The Carers Uk Archive, Alice Hall, Hannah Tweed Jul 2019

Curating Care: Creativity, Women’S Work, And The Carers Uk Archive, Alice Hall, Hannah Tweed

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

This article analyses the previously unexplored archives of the British charity, Carers UK, and its predecessor organizations, from its formation in 1965 to the present day. We argue that the archive is a valuable resource for social, political, and economic histories of care in the home, women’s work, feminist campaigns, and charitable organizations in the UK and beyond. It gives voice to traditionally silenced populations of carers through a strikingly diverse range of letters, edited collections of fiction, minutes of meetings, video diaries, newsletters, and anthologies of creative writing. As a case study, the Carers UK archive provides an important …

Recognizing Co-Creators In Four Configurations: Critical Questions For Web Archiving, Amy Wickner Jul 2019

Recognizing Co-Creators In Four Configurations: Critical Questions For Web Archiving, Amy Wickner

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

Four categories of co-creator shape web archivists' practice and influence the development of web archives: social forces, users and uses, subjects of web archives, and technical agents. This paper illustrates how these categories of co-creator overlap and interact in four specific web archiving contexts. It recommends that web archivists acknowledge this complex array of contributors as a way to imagine web archives differently. A critical approach to web archiving recognizes relationships and blended roles among stakeholders; seeks opportunities for non-extractive archival activity; and acknowledges the value of creative reuse as an important aspect of preservation.

The Strategy Of Using Social Networks In The Arab Archives, Elsayed Salah Elsawy

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

This study analyzes the use of social networks in the Arab national archives, the availability of a strategy for their use (objectives, content), and the numbers and specialization of staff managing and updating the archives’ content on social networks. It also examines which social platforms are used by archives, the number of their participants and followers, and to what extent the content of archives’ social platforms is archived. The study included twelve Arab national archives, as well as examples of foreign archives, to understand their strategy for using social networks. The study found that Arab national archives do not have …

Lessons From The 1800s: Creating The Miss Porter's School Digital Archive, Deborah Smith

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

College preparatory (“prep”) schools have their roots in the New England region of the United States; many predate the nation's most illustrious colleges and universities. The archives at these schools contain items of importance to American history in the 1800s. However, few schools have trained archivists managing their physical collections and even fewer have created digital archives to increase access. Founded in 1848, Miss Porter's School in Farmington, Connecticut was one of the first independent schools devoted to the education of young women. This article reviews the creation of the Porter's digital archive in 2018 and examines issues specific to …

Statistical Distributions Of Consonant Variants In Infant-Directed Speech: Evidence That /T/ May Be Exceptional, Tonya Bergeson-Dana, Laura Dilley, Jessica Gamache, Yuanyuan Wang, Derek M. Houston

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Statistical distributions of phonetic variants in spoken language influence speech perception for both language learners and mature users. We theorized that patterns of phonetic variant processing of consonants demonstrated by adults might stem in part from patterns of early exposure to statistics of phonetic variants in infant-directed (ID) speech. In particular, we hypothesized that ID speech might involve greater proportions of canonical /t/ pronunciations compared to adult-directed (AD) speech in at least some phonological contexts. This possibility was tested using a corpus of spontaneous speech of mothers speaking to other adults, or to their typically-developing infant. Tokens of word-final alveolar …

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: July 24, 2019, Eric Thompson Jul 2019

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: July 24, 2019, Eric Thompson

Leading Economic Indicator Reports

The Leading Economic Indicator – Nebraska (LEI-N) 1 fell by 0.29% during June of 2019. The decline in the LEI-N, which is designed to predict economic activity six months into the future, implies slowing economic growth in Nebraska towards the end of 2019. The leading indicator declined due to an increase in initial claims for unemployment insurance and a drop in both airport passenger enplanements and manufacturing hours. In addition, business expectations, which had been strong throughout the year, moderated during June. Respondents to the June Survey of Nebraska Business reported plans for only a modest increase in employment at …

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

Optimism is associated with better health outcomes with hypothesized effects due in part to optimism's association with restorative health processes. Limited work has examined whether optimism is associated with better quality sleep, a major restorative process. We test the hypothesis that greater optimism is associated with more favorable sleep quality and duration. Main analyses included adults aged 32-51 who participated in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study (n = 3,548) during the fifth (Year 15: 2000-2001) and sixth (Year 20: 2005-2006) follow-up visits. Optimism was assessed using the revised Life-Orientation Test. Self-report measures of …

Webinar: Aging In Place: Improving Mobility For Older Adults, Alan Kenneth Delatorre, Ivis Garcia Zambrana, Ja Young Kim

TREC Webinar Series

Aging in place can simply be defined as staying in your home as you age; aging in place concerns include mobility, social activities, safety, accessibility, and long term supports and services in one’s neighborhood and society. In order to facilitate aging in place, organizations in Salt Lake County, Utah and the City of Portland, Oregon, provided home modifications to income-qualified older adults that intended to enable aging in place. Such modifications alter individuals’ life-space mobility – a concept recently used by gerontologists and that we introduced to planners – from within one’s home to the broader community. A unique methodological …

Shifting The Balance Of Power: Asking Questions About The Comics-Questions Curriculum, Stephanie M. Margolin, Sarah Laleman Ward, Mason Brown

Publications and Research

We shift the balance of power in this paper by discussing a particular library lesson, the Comics-Questions Curriculum, with some of the students who participated in it, several years after they completed the workshop. By interviewing students and including them as co-authors of this paper, we re-center students in our analysis of this curriculum. In the process of reflecting on our work with the students and each other, we begin to see ways to engage in more meaningful, longer-term assessment of our classroom work while involving student voices in the process. We share our experiences here in order to take …

2019 Nebraska Property Tax Issues, J. David Aiken Jul 2019

2019 Nebraska Property Tax Issues, J. David Aiken

Cornhusker Economics

Nebraska property taxes are the tenth highest in the United States, sales taxes are the ninth lowest, and both income taxes and total state taxes are in the middle. Property taxes account for 38% of total state and local tax collections in Nebraska, the highest of any tax. Sales taxes are 29% of total tax collections, and income taxes are 26%. If property taxes, sales taxes and income taxes were equalized as sources of state and local revenue, property taxes would need to be reduced over $600 million.

Sixty percent of property taxes go to K-12 education funding. Nebraska state …

Broadcasting Law 32/2002: A Case Of The Indonesian Government’S Indecisiveness Towards The Implementation Of Radio Network, Kartika Singarimbun, Siti Karlinah, Yuliandre Darwis, Dadang Rahmat Hidayat

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Even though the growth of radio networks in Indonesia has only reached number 15, these networks have branches in all major cities by transferring the ownership of local radios. Radio network is regulated but only in terms of quantity and share of ownership. Broadcast licenses are issued only for limited areas, but with the development of technology, broadcast coverage area becomes unlimited. The 2002 Indonesian Broadcasting Law No.32 manages the amount of local content percentage, and regulatory process and actions for violating local content regulations are difficult to do. The duality of regulatory authority between the Ministry of Communication and …

Paul McGreevy, PhD

The importance of animal welfare and ethics (AWE) within the veterinary education should reflect community concerns and expectations about AWE, and the professional demands of veterinary accreditation on the first day of practice (or ‘Day One’ competences). Currently, much interest and debate surrounds the treatment of production animals, particularly around live export. To explore the attitudes to AWE of veterinary students in Australia and New Zealand, a survey was undertaken to (i) understand what students consider important AWE topics for initial production animal competence; and (ii) ascertain how these priorities correlated with gender, area of intended practice and stage-of-study. The …

The Role Of Citizenship Status And Its Impact On Latinos’ Civic Engagement In The United States, Veronica Torres Luna

CrissCross

This paper discusses the way in which U.S. citizenship status and legal permanent resident status impacts the likelihood of involvement in civic engagement activities among Latinos in the United States. Past research has looked into various variables such as group consciousness, Spanish-media language, and importance of issues; however, specific research on citizenship status is limited. This paper analyzes data from the Pew Research Center and data obtained from individual interviews in the Midwest. The results show that citizens are more likely than residents to be involved in the community and politics. These findings have important implications in how policies are …

The Canadian Urban - Rural Health Disparity: The Role Of Health Lifestyles And An Alternative Explanation For Rurality's Higher Bmi Rates, Matthew J. Stackhouse

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The Canadian urban - rural health disparity is concerning, as rural residents are more likely to experience deleterious health outcomes such as injuries, chronic conditions, obesity, and shorter life expectancy. There are several rural social-structural explanations for the disparity such as an aging population, less education attainment, greater unemployment rates, poorer working conditions, lack of health professionals, greater distance from quality health resource, and poorer health behaviours. Some of these findings have been linked to higher Body Mass Index (BMI) scores in rural areas. However, no study has considered the health lifestyle differences of urban - rural Canadians and how …

Private Wealth And Public Goods: A Case For A National Investment Authority, Robert C. Hockett, Saule T. Omarova

Robert C. Hockett

Much American electoral and policy debate now centers on how best to reignite the nation’s economic dynamism and rebuild its competitive strength. Any such undertaking presents an extraordinary challenge, demanding a correspondingly extraordinary institutional response. This Article proposes precisely such a response. It designs and advocates a new public instrumentality--a National Investment Authority (“NIA”)--charged with the critical task of devising and implementing a comprehensive long-term development strategy for the United States.

Patterned in part after the New Deal-era Reconstruction Finance Corporation, in part after modern sovereign wealth funds, and in part after private equity and venture capital firms, the NIA …
