“The Kids Are Alright”: Examining Generational Differences With Social Media Behaviors And Psychological Distress, Taylor Kizer Jul 2019

“The Kids Are Alright”: Examining Generational Differences With Social Media Behaviors And Psychological Distress, Taylor Kizer

Undergraduate Research Journal

Studies have recently examined associations between social media and psychological distress. Although Facebook use is related to lower psychological distress, few studies have examined the cumulative impact of social media use on psychological distress across multiple social media platforms. According to Erikson’s (1968; 1983) psychosocial theory of development, the relationship between social media and psychological distress may depend on age, specifically comparing young adulthood to middle adulthood. The goal of this study is to examine the relationship between social media behaviors, such as posting or monitoring, on different social media platforms (Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, and Twitter) and symptoms of depression, …

Slow Progress Towards Equity At A Hispanic-Serving Institution (Hsi): A Case Study, Paulette Lopez

Ed.D. Dissertations in Practice

This case study examined how a specific Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) pursues an institutional equity agenda. Through interviews with sixteen full-time employees representing a two-year public institution of higher education in the Pacific Northwest, this study explored faculty and staff perceptions of the purpose of an HSI designation and the intentionality of serving Latina/o students. The literature review provides a historical context of Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs) and the role MSIs serve in higher education. Themes identified through an in-depth thematic analysis include knowledge and awareness of HSIs, serving and supporting students, access and opportunities, and sense of community. Findings revealed the …

A Lack Of Exposure To School Psychology Within Undergraduate Psychology Coursework, Joel O. Bocanegra, Aaron A. Gubi, Gregory L. Callan, Sally Grapin, John Mccall

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

School psychology is experiencing a personnel shortage crisis, and scholars suggest that a possible contributing factor is its underrepresentation in undergraduate psychology curricula. Most school psychology trainers do not teach at the undergraduate level, thus undergraduate psychology students may not be adequately exposed to school psychology during undergraduate training. Research suggests that increased knowledge and exposure to school psychology are associated with increased intentions for school psychology. In the current study, 55 undergraduate students completed measures of knowledge, exposure, self-efficacy, outcome expectations, and choice intentions at the beginning and end of professional psychology courses. Results indicated that students enrolled in …

Natural Gas Investment In West Virginia, 2010-2016, Eric Bowen

Bureau of Business & Economic Research

West Virginia’s natural gas boom began in 2010 as hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling techniques began to be applied to the state’s shale formations. Since then, West Virginia has become the nation’s ninth-largest natural gas producer in 2017, with gross withdrawals of more than 1.6 trillion cubic feet. Since the gas boom started, the natural gas industry has made considerable investments in the state to pay for well drilling, mineral royalties, and pipeline infrastructure, among other investment costs. In this report, we estimate these investments in two key areas: upstream costs and midstream infrastructure.

Discordance Between The Sexual Experiences Surveys-Short Forms And The Revised Conflict Tactics Scales In College Men, Raeann E. Anderson, Shawn P. Cahill, Douglas D. Delahanty

Psychology Faculty Publications

Objective: Sexual victimization affects at least one in five college women and up to one in six college men; however, the exact rates of sexual perpetration are difficult to ascertain because of inconsistencies in the measurement of these behaviors. The present study is the first to evaluate the extent to which three commonly used measures of sexual violence (The Sexual Experiences Survey- Short Form Victimization (SES-SFV), The Sexual Experiences Survey-Short Form Perpetration (SES-SFP) and the Revised Conflicts Tactics Scales-Sexual Coercion Subscale (CTS2-SC)) concurred in identifying cases of sexual victimization and sexual perpetration. This is the first study to simultaneously examine …

The Allocation And Exchange Of Property Rights As A Way To Understand Comparative Economics Systems And Managerial Economics, John Garen Jul 2019

The Allocation And Exchange Of Property Rights As A Way To Understand Comparative Economics Systems And Managerial Economics, John Garen

Institute for the Study of Free Enterprise Working Papers

This paper discusses how economic systems can be described by the manner that property rights are allocated to individuals, to the government, or to interests groups. Property rights entail control of use of assets, claim on the net income from an asset, and transferability of the previous two. Economics systems (e.g., capitalism, socialism, cronyism) are characterized by who holds these rights, in whole or in part, and this determines the success or failure of an economy. A related analysis is applied to understanding business organization, e.g., the corporate and non-corporate form, franchising, and employee compensation methods. Each entails a (voluntary) …

Side Effects Of Self-Referential Discussion: The Impact And Interaction Of Deductive And Inductive Routes Of Identity, Chandler Macswain Jul 2019

Side Effects Of Self-Referential Discussion: The Impact And Interaction Of Deductive And Inductive Routes Of Identity, Chandler Macswain

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Studies of group communication and group identity rest on two competing theoretical concepts of the group, one that prioritizes examining the relationships between members and one that examines the group as a gestalt construct. For live groups, it is not always clear which style, individual or gestalt, is most appropriate or provides more insight into any specific group because groups’ identities and communication behaviors are sometimes explicable by both theoretical concepts. This occurs because in real-world groups the formation process typically involves an amalgamation of both influences. In other words, live groups form identities built around both members’ individual traits …

Faculty And Staff Members' Awareness Of Inclusive Policies At Higher Educational Institutions, Reece Harty Jul 2019

Faculty And Staff Members' Awareness Of Inclusive Policies At Higher Educational Institutions, Reece Harty

Master's Theses (2009 -)

The identity of a person has many different layers from sexual orientation to race, morals and values, to even gender. As times progress, many individuals are finding that their identities are not easily defined and that their gender cannot be categorized into the current boxes that society has. This forces many to struggle with discerning who they really are and where they fit into societal structures. As more people explain how one may not subscribe to all of the gender expectations of the one identity, some have decided to identify as non-binary. Non-binary means that a person does not identify …

We aim to examine temporal trends of orthopedic operations and opioid-related hospital stays among seniors in the nation and states of Oregon and Washington where marijuana legalization was accepted earlier than any others. As aging society advances in the United States (U.S.), orthopedic operations and opioid-related hospital stays among seniors increase in the nation. A serial cross-sectional cohort study using the healthcare cost and utilization project fast stats from 2006 through 2015 measured annual rate per 100,000 populations of orthopedic operations by age groups (45–64 vs 65 and older) as well as annual rate per 100,000 populations of opioid-related hospital …

Contributors to this volume varyingly examine how Cultural Studies scholars have educational exchanges …

Learning Styles And Class Performance In Hybrid Finance Classes, Pablo Calafiore Jul 2019

Learning Styles And Class Performance In Hybrid Finance Classes, Pablo Calafiore

Finance Faculty Publications

We analyze the effect of student preferred learning style on course performance in an introductory finance class using the VARK learning styles survey developed by Fleming and Mills (1992) and validated by Leite (2010). Learning styles refer to the preferred way used by learners to understand, process, and retain information. The VARK framework classifies learners as Visual, Auditory, Reading, Kinesthetic, or Multimodal (combination of the previous) learning styles preferences. Using a sample of 79 non-traditional undergraduate students enrolled in business finance classes at a public urban university in the U.S. Southwest, we find that student preferred learning style has no …
