A Qualitative Analysis Of Problematic And Non-Problematic Alcohol Use After Bariatric Surgery, Danielle L. Reaves, Joanne M. Dickson, Jason C. G. Halford, Paul Christiansen, Charlotte A. Hardman

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

OBJECTIVES: Bariatric surgery is an effective weight loss tool, but an under-communicated side effect may include the increased risk for alcohol problems. Few studies have examined contributors towards alcohol problems following surgery using a qualitative approach. Therefore, the current study aimed to generate insight informed by participants with problematic alcohol use following bariatric surgery, in comparison with participants without.

METHODS: Participants (14; females, n = 9; males, n = 5) completed semi-structured interviews using questions relating to alcohol use, relationship to food, support and surgical experiences. Thematic analysis was conducted to provide insight into the factors which influenced drinking behaviours …

The Application Of Risk–Needs Programming In A Juvenile Diversion Program, Lindsey Wylie, Samantha S. Clinkinbeard, Anne M. Hobbs Jul 2019

The Application Of Risk–Needs Programming In A Juvenile Diversion Program, Lindsey Wylie, Samantha S. Clinkinbeard, Anne M. Hobbs

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

As “gatekeepers” into the juvenile justice system, diversion programs are positioned to prevent future delinquency. Although research on the effectiveness of diversion is mixed, the risk–needs–responsivity (RNR) model may explain how diversion programming that matches youth to services based on their risk and needs may reduce reoffending. Most RNR research has included juveniles at the deeper end of the system, fewer studies have examined RNR with early system–involved youth. The current study explored the application of risk and needs matching in a juvenile diversion program by gender and race/ethnicity. Furthermore, we estimated a survival function to estimate risk and needs …

The Impact Of A Brief Bullying Bystander Intervention On Depressive Symptoms, Aida Midgett, Diana M. Doumas

Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

The authors evaluated the impact of a brief bullying bystander intervention (STAC) on depressive symptoms among high school students using a randomized controlled design. Results of path analyses provided support for a mediational model in which the intervention was associated with an increase in sense of school belonging, which in turn was associated with a reduction in depressive symptoms. The authors discuss implications for high school counselors and counselors in other settings working with adolescents.

The Development Of A Community Counseling Training Clinic For Latino Immigrants, Daniel Gutierrez, Keri E. Revens, Mark Dehaven Jul 2019

The Development Of A Community Counseling Training Clinic For Latino Immigrants, Daniel Gutierrez, Keri E. Revens, Mark Dehaven

Arts & Sciences Articles

Latinos are the fasting growing minority in the United States, and among the least likely to access mental health services. Two reasons cited for the significant mental health disparities in the Latino community are: a lack of culturally responsive services and a lack of culturally competent mental health professionals. This manuscript describes the development of a community counseling training clinic constructed through a partnership between a community center and a counselor education and supervision program. Process and clinical outcomes data demonstrate that the program was successful in retaining clients and students had a positive experience at the training site.

Identifying And Categorizing Stakeholders For Protected Area Expansion Around A National Park In Namibia, Lelani Mannetti, Thomas Goettert, Ulrich Zeller, Karen J. Esler

Sustainable Futures Lab Publications

Protected areas and adjacent landscapes are increasingly being viewed as integrated. A more general awareness is emerging of the relevance of collectively managed landscapes for conservation and human well-being. In Namibia, areas dedicated to conservation are increasing because of the proliferation of conservancies and game reserves. Management toward integrated conservation in these landscapes involves land use practices variably dedicated to wildlife management and the inclusion of land owners and resource users in the decision-making process. We use stakeholder analysis to identify participants integral to an expanded protected area network around the Etosha National Park in Namibia. We identified and categorized …

We analyzed how often and in what ways the Journal Impact Factor (JIF) is currently used in review, promotion, and tenure (RPT) documents of a representative sample of universities from the United States and Canada. 40% of research-intensive institutions and 18% of master’s institutions mentioned the JIF, or closely related terms. Of the institutions that mentioned the JIF, 87% supported its use in at least one of their RPT documents, 13% expressed caution about its use, and none heavily criticized it or prohibited its use. Furthermore, 63% of institutions that mentioned the JIF associated the metric with quality, 40% with …

The (Re)Introduction Of Dual-Class Share Structures In Hong Kong: A Historical And Comparative Analysis, Hui Robin Huang, Wei Zhang, Siu Cheung Kelvin Lee Jul 2019

The (Re)Introduction Of Dual-Class Share Structures In Hong Kong: A Historical And Comparative Analysis, Hui Robin Huang, Wei Zhang, Siu Cheung Kelvin Lee

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

In April 2018, Hong Kong issued new listing rules to introduce the dual-class share structure, also known as weighted voting rights (WVR), under which a special class of shareholders’ voting rights are conferred disproportionately with respect to their equity interest. The WVR was used in Hong Kong in the 1980s but was banned in 1989. The debate on the WVR was rekindled by the Alibaba event in 2013. The WVR structure has benefits and costs. Thus, Hong Kong lays down relevant supporting mechanisms, including entry requirements, disclosure requirements and safeguard requirements. The WVR regime in Hong Kong appears to be …

The Dynamics Of Vote Buying In Developing Democracies: Party Attachment And Party Competition In Southeast Asia, Matthew Louis Wagner Jul 2019

The Dynamics Of Vote Buying In Developing Democracies: Party Attachment And Party Competition In Southeast Asia, Matthew Louis Wagner

Theses and Dissertations

Broadly defined, what factors explain changes in party competition in developing democracies? The dominant theoretical paradigm used to explain changes in party competition in established democracies does not offer much leverage in emerging ones. The literature argues that linkages between voting blocs and parties erode and cleavages shift, allowing for new voter blocs or even new parties. However, if social groups, parties, and party systems are different in emerging democracies than in established ones, does this mean the dynamics of party competition are also different? Also, what does is the role of voters in these systems? My dissertation outlines a …

Co-Occurrence And Non-Overlap Among Behavioral And Health-Related Problems In Preschool Children, Chandni Patel Jul 2019

Co-Occurrence And Non-Overlap Among Behavioral And Health-Related Problems In Preschool Children, Chandni Patel

Theses and Dissertations

Integrating mental health and healthcare services increases the reach of healthcare while reducing costs and stigma associated with seeking mental health services. To provide such services for preschool aged children we must first understand how behaviors related to healthy lifestyle and mental/behavioral health overlap. This study examined the relationship between behavior problems, sleep duration, screen time, and eating patterns and assessed the frequency of co-occurring problems in these areas. Because of the importance of parenting across these domains, the association between parent disciplinary strategies and the co-occurrence of behaviors in the different problem areas was assessed. MANOVAs revealed that there …

Assessing Intersectional Identity: Investigating The Scales Of Contextualized Identity And Perceived Marginalization, Lauren Yadlosky Jul 2019

Assessing Intersectional Identity: Investigating The Scales Of Contextualized Identity And Perceived Marginalization, Lauren Yadlosky

Dissertations (1934 -)

The existing literature highlights chronic and extensive psychological and physical health disparities between minority and majority individuals across a variety of identity dimensions including but not limited to race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, and socio-economic class. Existing methods used to assess the minority identities associated with these health disparities are theoretically and statistically limited and often reinforce the oppressive mechanisms with which disparities are associated. While numerous researchers have identified these concerns, no quantitative assessment measure addressing them currently exists. To address this gap in the literature, researchers introduced the Scales of Contextualized Identity and perceived Marginalization (SCIM). The resulting measure …

Deprivasi Utama Kemiskinan Multidimensi Antarprovinsi Di Indonesia, Bagus Sumargo, Naomi Miduk M. Simanjuntak

Jurnal Ekonomi dan Pembangunan Indonesia

So far poverty alleviation policies are still oriented to the monetary approach, while poverty is multidimensional, this means that multidimensional poverty is defined as the condition of the lack of all existing poverty indicators. This study finds the main deprivation of poverty indicators in each province in Indonesia, so that poverty alleviation programs can be directed and more in line with the main deprivation needs of poverty in an area. Using the data of the National Socio-Economic Survey (Susenas 2014) and Alkire-Foster’s multidimensional poverty measurement method, and with 12 indicators in three dimensions (health, education, and living standards), found that …

Analisis Pengembangan Ekspor Pala, Lawang, Dan Kapulaga Indonesia, Ely Nurhayati, Sri Hartoyo, Sri Mulatsih

Jurnal Ekonomi dan Pembangunan Indonesia

Export is an important component in the economy. The higher export performance, the greater positive impact. From 2012 to 2016, Indonesia’s exports continued to decline, so Indonesia needs to boost its exports. One of the potential commodities to be developed is nutmeg, mace, and cardamoms. This study analyzed the competitiveness of nutmeg, mace, and cardamoms, as well as the factors affecting its exports. The methods used are RCA, EPD, X-Model, and Gravity. The competitiveness analysis showed that the optimistic export markets were Pakistan, Germany, Italy, and USA. The potential export markets were Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, France, and Netherlands. Factors that …

“Tahukah Kamu?”: Analisis Set Data Survei Sosial Ekonomi Nasional (Susenas), Meliyanni Johar, Prastuti Soewondo, Retno Pujisubekti, Harsa Kunthara Satrio, Ardi Adji, Iqbal Dawam Wibisono

Jurnal Ekonomi dan Pembangunan Indonesia

Susenas has been the backbone of many scientific research and public policies in Indonesia since 1960s. Nonetheless, some of its features have not been clearly conveyed and understood. We highlight two features that often lead to misinterpretation. First, the expenditure variable in Susenas does not measure private outlay but household’s consumption because it includes external assistance. Incomes of households which receive many assistances therefore are overestimated. Second, a sudden change in questionnaire since 2015 may disrupt trend analysis. Specifically for health items, this abrupt change coincides with any change stimulated by a new health initiative introduced by the Central Government.

Transmisi Kemiskinan Antargenerasi Di Indonesia Tahun 1993–2014, Studi Data Ifls, Memy Irwan, Jossy P. Moeis

Jurnal Ekonomi dan Pembangunan Indonesia

The initial hypothesis states that children from poor household have a tendency to return to poverty as an adult. This is because children from poor household are more difficult to utilize available resources than children from non-poor household. By using McNemar test, the data proved that there was a transmission of poverty in Indonesia during 1993–2014. In other words, poverty alleviation program in Indonesia had not been successfully carried out. Multinomial logit was used to analyzed factors that influence the transmission of poverty. There are various factors that affect the intergenerational transmission of poverty in Indonesia, namely the level of …

Inklusi Keuangan Melalui Program Layanan Keuangan Digital Dan Laku Pandai, Prani Sastiono, Chaikal Nuryakin

Jurnal Ekonomi dan Pembangunan Indonesia

This study aims to analyse the inclusion rate of two programs, namely Layanan Keuangan Digital (LKD) and Laku Pandai. We found that inclusion rate of LKD program and Laku Pandai program are 28% and 43% respectively when we define inclusion as use of service (access inclusion). However, the rate falls to 5% and 25% respectively when we define inclusion as account ownership. Laku Pandai program has advantages in increasing financial access of people who live in rural area, have low education, and generate low income. We also found that knowledge/certainty in transaction costs (for LKD) and size of access …

This article discusses the work of the American Library Association (ALA) Special Task Force on Sustainability, which identified 52 recommendations, including the adoption of sustainability as a core value of librarianship. The group aims to promote libraries as catalysts, connectors, and conveners to promote sustainability, resilience, and regeneration. The Task Force is guided by the concept of the triple bottom line, which states that an organization's practices must be not only economically feasible but also socially equitable and environmentally sound. The article also provides examples of how libraries engage in sustainable practices to support the cities and towns they serve.

Indonesia's persistent struggle through the Juanda declaration has succeeded in obtaining juridical recognition regarding the boundary of Indonesia as an intact archipelago in the UN III Convention on the International Sea Law (UNCLOS) 1982, although the United States as a superpower country does not admit it. Nevertheless, in International forum, The Unitary State The Republic of Indonesia (NKRI) has had territorial sovereignty and additional zones, Exclusive Economic Zone (ZEE) in a national sphere with all its natural wealth content belonging to the nation in the dimension of Nusantara. This paper intends to show that the Republic of Indonesia ia an …
