An Examination Of The Effects Of Post-Identification Feedback On Jurors, Daniella Cash
An Examination Of The Effects Of Post-Identification Feedback On Jurors, Daniella Cash
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Post-identification feedback (PIF) occurs when witnesses are given feedback following their identification choices. This feedback has been shown to alter witnesses’ retrospective judgments regarding their witnessing experience (e.g., they are more confident that they made a correct identification). PIF effects are robust; they impact witnesses’ memory of their experience, and also appear to act as confirmation to jurors who are asked to assess witness reliability. A current recommendation for eyewitness procedures is that identifications should be recorded and shown to jurors at trial, but this might be harmful if jurors are also negatively impacted by this suggestive feedback. The goal …
Empathic Responsivity And Callous-Unemotional Traits Across Development, Julia Elizabeth Clark
Empathic Responsivity And Callous-Unemotional Traits Across Development, Julia Elizabeth Clark
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Callous-unemotional (CU) traits are associated with deficits in empathy and emotional responses to others. Specifically, CU traits are consistently correlated with under-reactivity to others’ distress cues. However, it is unknown whether CU traits are also associated with more general deficits in emotional reactivity (e.g., to situations involving threat to the self). Further, the relationship between CU traits and the ability to accurately identify others’ emotions is not well established, and prior work often has not considered possible developmental changes in this relationship. To address these questions, the current study recruited a school-based community sample of children from kindergarten, third, and …

Party Blight In Rural Missouri: Causes And Consequences Of Local Organizational Decline, Joseph Anthony
Party Blight In Rural Missouri: Causes And Consequences Of Local Organizational Decline, Joseph Anthony
Dissertations
Political parties are fundamental institutions to representative democracies, and they have been an integral part of the American political fabric since the early 1800s. Changes in the political landscape have pressed social scientists to engage in a now long-running academic debate as to whether political parties are in a state of reform and adaptation in the modern campaign environment, or if they are in an overall state of decline. While there has been considerable attention given to national and state party organizations, very little is known about how local party organizations are faring in the modern campaign environment. This dissertation …

Physical Activity And Its Association With Depression In The Diabetic Hispanic Population, Sukaina Rizvi, Ali M. Khan
School of Medicine Publications and Presentations
Introduction Hispanics are the largest ethnic minority group in the United States. The prevalence of depression and co-morbid depression in the Hispanic population is well-recognized. The positive association between physical activity and psychological health improves mood, emotional well-being, and prognostic outcome.
Objectives There are two aspects of our research paper. First, it critically reviews the available literature showing the correlation between physical exercise and depression. Second, it analyzes the association between exercise and depression in uncontrolled diabetic Hispanics using data collected from the local community intervention program.
Method A chi-square analysis was conducted to examine whether levels of physical activity …

Organizational Learning In Libraries At For-Profit Colleges And Universities, Julie Evener
Organizational Learning In Libraries At For-Profit Colleges And Universities, Julie Evener
Education Collection
Despite successful application of organizational learning to enhance services in academic libraries, little is known about organizational learning in libraries of for-profit colleges and universities (FPCUs). A quantitative online survey, followed by qualitative interviews, served to assess and explore the use of organizational learning in libraries at FPCUs. Data reflected medium to high levels of organizational learning in the libraries studied, as well as a negative relationship between organizational learning and number of students enrolled. Common themes in the interview responses included external pressures from the FPCUs making it more difficult to implement organizational learning, and the importance of communication. …
Greek University Students And The Smoke-Free Law: Learning About Rights And Duties In A Community Of Practice, Luciana Benincasa
Greek University Students And The Smoke-Free Law: Learning About Rights And Duties In A Community Of Practice, Luciana Benincasa
The Qualitative Report
This paper is about Greek university students’ violation of the smoking law in public venues and their understanding of rights, duties and responsibilities. Thirty-one students (21 smokers) were interviewed and asked to describe and discuss their own and other students’ behaviour in relation to smoking in closed public places in terms of rights and duties. Additional material from the printed and electronic press has been used to provide a context to the students’ statements. Participant-smokers’ systematic violations of the smoke-free law spring from a peculiar view of rights, duties and responsibilities. Both behaviour and its theoretical underpinnings are reinforced in …

Parents’ Perceptions Of Smartphone Use And Parenting Practices, David J. Johnson, Katherine M. Hertlein Ph.D.
The Qualitative Report
Technology use in one’s life has generally explored why people use certain technologies, how they use technology, and the effect of such usage on our personal relationships. To date, however, few studies have explored the use of using smartphones and its effect on parenting practices. The present study sought to understand parents’ perceptions of their smartphone use’s effect on their children and parenting practices. Grounded in a social constructionism perspective, interviews were conducted with 12 parents inquiring about their smartphone usage. Five themes emerged: (1) Disengagement, (2) Concern for Future, (3) Change in Social Norms, (4) Boundaries, and (5) Cognitive …

Navigating The Rough On And Off The Course: Best Practices For Reputation Management And Image Repair In Professional Golf, Erica Joy Naumann
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Reputation management is a challenging yet necessary process for athletes in need of image repair. This study, focused on the golf industry, compares the scandals and image repair processes of professional golfers Tiger Woods and John Daly. By analyzing William Benoit’s 1995 Image Repair Theory message strategies, the researcher was able to measure change in Woods’ and Daly’s reputations. This study found that when properly implemented, these message strategies can aid in the rebuilding of a damaged reputation. These findings supported the creation of a list of best practices for image repair which in turn, provide the golf industry with …

Self-Affirmation Theory And The Change Of Perception Of Self And Threats, Isaac Wicker
Self-Affirmation Theory And The Change Of Perception Of Self And Threats, Isaac Wicker
Theses and Dissertations
In today’s American culture, people experience high rates of distress and depression (Kessler et al., 2005). Self-affirmation theory has been shown to help people reduce stress and defensiveness in the face of a wide variety of stressors. A shortcoming of self-affirmation exercises is that there are barriers to using them in naturalistic settings. One such barrier is that the affirmation content needs to be regulated so that it is not closely related to the salient stressor or else the effects of the affirmation could be counteracted. The current study sought to use a prompt-guided value selection for the self-affirmation exercise …
Evaluating Oyster Aquaculture’S Cost-Effectiveness As A Nitrogen Removal Best Management Practice – A Case Study Of The Delaware Inland Bays, Jefferson F. Flood
Evaluating Oyster Aquaculture’S Cost-Effectiveness As A Nitrogen Removal Best Management Practice – A Case Study Of The Delaware Inland Bays, Jefferson F. Flood
Journal of Ocean and Coastal Economics
Disease and overfishing have led to a dramatic decline in wild populations and subsequent harvests of the eastern oyster Crassostrea virginica over the past few decades in Delaware and other states along the Atlantic Coast. However, in addition to their value as food to consumers, oysters, whether wild populations or cultured stocks, can provide ecosystem services such as nutrient removal, which may result in localized water quality improvements. Consequently, recent policies in Delaware have sought to establish and grow an oyster aquaculture industry. However, a key challenge to achieving efficient levels of industry growth and water quality improvements is that …

Developing A Collection (Team): Adapting, Innovating, And Thriving In Organizational Change At Kennesaw State University, Ana Guimaraes
Collection Development Unit
In 2013, the Kennesaw State University (KSU) Library System hired its first Collection Development Librarian. Since then, the Library System has experienced remarkable changes and growth in many areas, including institutional consolidation, facility renovations, new staffing, and organizational restructuring. Of note is the establishment and extraordinary growth of the Collection Development Unit since 2015. With a good dose of creativity, these changes enabled us to grow into a flourishing team. By pulling together talent from other library units and creating positions from the ground up, we were able to generate something new.
Within four years of focused and dedicated effort …

Supporting Access And Community-Building: The Cala Social Media Tag Library, Sai Deng, Esther Deleon, Jeannie Chen
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
The Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA) Social Media Group initially created the CALA Social Media Tag Library in Fall 2017 to facilitate better navigation and search for social media channels, particularly the CALA Facebook public page and promote the organization’s programs and activities. The Social Media Group introduced the creation of the Tag Library to the CALA community in Summer 2018, but the tags were limited to member-only, internal use. In Spring 2019, the restructured CALA Social Media Committee reviewed, enriched, and standardized the Tag Library, and decided to make it publicly available for anyone interested in posting to CALA’s …

Information Literacy At The Intersection Of Scholarly Communications And Social Justice, Sarah Appedu
All Musselman Library Staff Works
Undergraduate outreach about Open Access (OA) lies at the intersection of information literacy and Scholarly Communications. Reframing undergraduates as current and future scholars allows us to treat them as agents within the Scholarly Communications network. Students who have mastered fundamental research skills are prepared to view them through the critical lens of Scholarly Communications in order to learn both how to locate resources and how those resources are created. This educational approach highlights the various barriers scholars can face in the research process, as well as provides an awareness of information privilege.
This poster will provide a model for how …
Creating Sustainable Support Systems For The Cultural Integration Of International Students At A Medium Size Ontario University, Muzi Li
The Dissertation in Practice at Western University
This OIP investigates the lack of cultural integration and support for international students at Medium-Size Ontario University (MSOU). The support for cultural integration of the international students at MSOU is inadequate and international students are facing social, emotional and academic challenges as they are not provided with the needed assistance to acclimatize to Western culture. Three potential solutions to address the PoP are demonstrated and evaluated. The chosen solution of implementing extended orientation and workshops is inspected in detail. Transformational Leadership and Confucianism are examined to ensure their relevancy and appropriateness to address this PoP and OIP and connected to …

A Meta-Analytic Examination Of The Continued Influence Of Misinformation In The Face Of Correction: How Powerful Is It, Why Does It Happen, And How To Stop It?, Nathan Walter, Riva Tukachinsky
Communication Faculty Articles and Research
A meta-analysis was conducted to examine the extent of continued influence of misinformation in the face of correction and the theoretical explanations of this phenomenon. Aggregation of results from 32 studies (N = 6,527) revealed that, on average, correction does not entirely eliminate the effect of misinformation (r = –.05, p = .045). Corrective messages were found to be more successful when they are coherent, consistent with the audience’s worldview, and delivered by the source of the misinformation itself. Corrections are less effective if the misinformation was attributed to a credible source, the misinformation has been repeated multiple …
