Essays On Economic Valuation Of Water Resources, Christina Estela Brown
Essays On Economic Valuation Of Water Resources, Christina Estela Brown
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Increased potential of flooding caused by heavy precipitation events and sea level rise, as well as growing risk of drought that are likely changes in the frequency and spatial distribution of climatic conditions, pose particular challenges to water management in coastal areas. Extreme events are expected to increase the complexity of managing scarce water resources for competing water users. South Florida, which is characterized by a mosaic of urban settlements, agricultural areas and natural areas, is served by a highly human-engineered water management system grappling to meet multiple objectives, including urban and agricultural water supply, flood control, and environmental restoration. …
To Tell Or Not To Tell: Student Responses To Negative Behavior In Elementary School, Brent D. Harger
To Tell Or Not To Tell: Student Responses To Negative Behavior In Elementary School, Brent D. Harger
Sociology Faculty Publications
In this article I examine the factors that influence fifth grade student decisions regarding whether or not to report negative interactions to adults. Data from observations and interviews with students and adults show that there are many factors influencing the reluctance to tell on others. Among them is a school context in which verbal attacks are downplayed and telling is seen as ineffective and stigmatized. This context prevents bystanders from reporting what they have observed and places those with a lack of social support at a significant disadvantage when dealing with negative behavior.

While the names Harvey, Sandy, and Katrina ring loudly in the ears of many today – can we still learn valuable lessons in the archives from Diane, Camille, and Agnes? Climate change increasingly contributes to not only more frequent and more violent tropical cyclogenesis, but repeated extreme flooding events caused by unnamed weather systems, supercells, dam failures, and surges from rising oceans. These events have opened questions of survival for communities across the United States, and recent examples show that some communities indeed face pressure to abandon their long-standing ground and forego rebuilding.
In a 2013 article titled “Come Hell …

The Accidental Middle East Librarians, Shahrzad Khosrowpour, Essraa Nawar
Library Presentations, Posters, and Audiovisual Materials
One of the most essential factors in acquiring a subject-focused collection for an academic institution is the close collaboration of the subject liaison librarian and the faculty. Not to mention that when the collection is in a Middle East language, it may have some restriction in access/locating materials desirable for that collection. It also involves challenges such as having the knowledge of the language, locating vendors/publishers, and communicating with them to easily find the materials in Western countries and/or outside resources on time. To create an effective collection that supports the curriculum, librarians may need to provide an individual level …
"It's Not Addiction Until You Graduate": Natural Recovery In The College Context, Breanne I. Casper
"It's Not Addiction Until You Graduate": Natural Recovery In The College Context, Breanne I. Casper
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Natural recovery is inhibition or moderation of problematic substance use without employing the use of formal addiction services. A neuroanthropological approach to natural recovery highlights the importance of both social and biological aspects of achieving this "self" led process of change. Throughout this project I take a critical anthropological approach to natural recovery, which explores a more holistic conception and historically situated view of current natural recovery theory. This research project employs a neuroanthropological perspective to assess how college students perform natural recovery. Using ethnographic methods, which highlight the social and physical experience of moderation, I discuss how students negotiate …

Aging In The Workplace: A Cross Case Analysis In Jamaica's Finance Sector, Malaika Tahirah Edwards
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Along with the increase in the number of older people globally, is an increase in the number of older people in the labor force. Older adults increasingly represent a large segment of the working population. The purpose of this study was therefore to explore workplace aging, with specific reference to Jamaica’s finance sector, in relation to organizational preparedness for the aging workforce.
This study examined aging from an organizational perspective, a national perspective, and an individual perspective, through the lens of Baby Boomers. The study was framed through the lens of the Four Frames Model, and the Metaperspectives Theory, which …

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications
Objective. Adolescents living in rural regions of the United States face substantial barriers to accessing mental health services, creating needs for more accessible, non-stigmatizing, briefer interventions. Research suggests that single-session “growth mindset” interventions (GM-SSIs)—which teach the belief that personal traits are malleable through effort—may reduce internalizing and externalizing problems in adolescents. However, GM-SSIs have not been evaluated among rural youth, and their effects on internalizing and externalizing problems have not been assessed within a single trial, rendering their relative benefits for different problem types unclear. We examined whether a computerized GM-SSI could reduce depressive symptoms, social anxiety symptoms, and …

Neighborhood-Level Predictors Of Obesity Among African American Children In California, Uche Onyeka
Neighborhood-Level Predictors Of Obesity Among African American Children In California, Uche Onyeka
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
The increased prevalence of childhood obesity is a major public health concern nationally and globally. Childhood obesity is primarily caused by the imbalance between caloric intake and caloric expenditure; however, its increase over the past decades may be due to environmental and behavioral factors. The purpose of the current study was to examine if any relationships existed between childhood obesity, level of physical activity, and neighborhood-level risk factors. This study used the California Health Interview Survey 2009–2014 data sets for African American children aged 5–11 years (n = 1,049). The dependent variable was body mass index (BMI) while the …

Inside Sales Force And Gender: Mediating Effects Of Intrinsic Motivation On Sales Controls And Performance, Anne Gottfried, Scott Ambrose, Richard Plank
Scott C. Ambrose
Business-to-business sales organizations are experiencing inside sales growth as well as increased importance and utilization of their inside sales people. This dynamic role change towards inside sales is resulting in organizations re-thinking their sales control structure. To fill this gap, data was collected from 183 inside sales professionals representing a variety of industries. Utilizing Partial Least Square Analysis (PLS), this study analyzed the influences of gender on the relationship between sales controls and job performance to include measuring effects of intrinsic motivation, both challenge seeking and task enjoyment, on the model relationships. Findings suggest that differences do exist between males …

Young Adults' Problems Reflected In Contemporary Literature, Ijobat Juraeva Teacher Of Linguistics And Literary Studies Department
Philology Matters
The problems of young people attract the scholars of different spheres, and literature inparticular. Young people were depicted under the influence of psychological, social and economic situations. The 20th century literature pays more attention to the psychological aspects of young people’s development. In previous studies on young adults’ literature, different social aspects have been found to be related to the development of young people’s psyche. However, not enough attention has been paid to an individual as the part of the whole social strata. Early example sof research into young adults’ literature include Ya. N. Zasurskiy, A.S. Mulyarchik, T.Morozova.Only in the …

Comparing The Attributive Constructions Of The Russian And Uzbek Languages In The Formation Of Sociolinguistic Competencies, Sayora Alimsaidova Candidate Of Pedagogical Sciences, Department Of Russian Language And Literature
Philology Matters
The article deals with the comparison of attributive relations in the Russian and Uzbek languages. The characteristic features of the grammatical way of interpreting determinative relations in the compared languages and their use by pupils in their speech are analyzed. It is indicative that for the correct use of definitive relations in speech and in the formation of sociolinguistic competence, the deepening of the motivation to learn Russian and its constructions is facilitated by textual regional material of national importance, and considered not only as a unit of education, but also as the main way of organizing educational material lesson. …

Structural-Semantic And Cognitive Features Of Secondary Predicative Constructions Of The English And Uzbek Languages, Sobir Khamzaev Doctor Of Philosophy (Phd)
Philology Matters
Predicativity and the role of secondary predicative constructions in a sentence have always been considered as one of the topical problems of linguistics. The author of the article analyzes specific and similar features of secondary pred-icative constructions of the English and Uzbekl anguages. The category of event is considered asa category, which is important in the analysis ofcognitive features of secondary predicative constructions in the discussed languages. Moreover, the article covers the peculiarities of the structure and semantics of the English and Uzbek secondary predicative constructions. Predicativity is a reflection of the essence of a sentence to the reality, and is …

Uzbekistan Mod Foreign Language Aptitude Test: A Critical Evaluation, Ilya Zverev Head Of The English Language Department
Philology Matters
Globalization has entailed a growth in impor-tance of the second/foreign language teachingand learning all over the world with the numberof both voluntary and involuntary language learn-ers increasing on daily basis. There is, however,a widely attested discrepancy in actual resultsachieved by those engaged in second/foreignlanguage learning usually explained by means ofinvocation of a specialized talent that certain in-dividuals have, whilst others lack. Such a talent isthought to be measurable and the results obtainedare regarded as valid predictors of success forintensive foreign language programs. The pres-ent article deals with critical appraisal of one ofsuch instruments in terms of both its theoreticaland practical …

Basic Social Categories: Natural Semantic Meta-Language (Nsm) Approach, Guli Ergasheva Doctor Of Philological Sciences
Philology Matters
The study deals with the NSM analysis, developed by A. Wierzbicka, and its essence to develop the prototype structure of the basic social categories. The hypothesis questioned within this paper: ‘Are the NSM analysis results of the category areprone to determine its prototype?’.The work of Sapir Whorf claims that the linguistic systems of the “pictures of the world” are incompatible with each other, whereas Wierzbicka, on the contrary, asserts that culturally specific concepts are well comparable, as they can betranslated into a universal language that excludesthese differences. Thus, the language of semantic primitives – NSM, demonstrating its expressive capacity, restricts …

Automated Bioacoustics: Methods In Ecology And Conservation And Their Potential For Animal Welfare Monitoring, Michael P. Mcloughlin, Rebecca Stewart, Alan G. Mcelligott
Conservation Biology and Animal Welfare Collection
Vocalizations carry emotional, physiological and individual information. This suggests that they may serve as potentially useful indicators for inferring animal welfare. At the same time, automated methods for analysing and classifying sound have developed rapidly, particularly in the fields of ecology, conservation and sound scene classification. These methods are already used to automatically classify animal vocalizations, for example, in identifying animal species and estimating numbers of individuals. Despite this potential, they have not yet found widespread application in animal welfare monitoring. In this review, we first discuss current trends in sound analysis for ecology, conservation and sound classification. Following this, …

Voter disillusionment is commonplace in the United States, with many eligible voters either choosing not to or altogether unable to exercise their right to vote. To the former, in 2016 alone, nearly 40 percent of eligible voters did not vote. Although it is an issue that extends to the health of a democracy, voting itself is not one that is central to campaign platforms, with candidates running on more high-profile issues such as healthcare or the economy. A solution to voter disillusionment is for pragmatically minded candidates to organize their campaigns around voter expansion as a means to build winning …

Using Affinity Networks To Scaffold Community Collaboration: A Methodological Technique To Support The Use Of Qualitative Data In Community-Based Research, Catharine Biddle, Ian Mette
The Qualitative Report
Cooperation is increasingly required to craft solutions to complex problems in our society, while the role of cultivated, academic expertise is being challenged as a model for solving social problems. Participatory or community-based approaches are often suggested as a solution to this dichotomy; however, few analytic methods are purposefully engineered to support this work. Affinity networks combine interviewing with data visualization to produce data analysis that can be easily fed back into collaboratives with community partners. This article provides a step by step introduction to producing affinity networks using Computer Assisted Qualitative Data Analysis Software, as well as suggestions for …
