Unspoken Rules: Using The Game Of Mao To Teach Sensemaking And Cultural Approaches To Communication, Nina O'Brien, Cynthia Wang
Unspoken Rules: Using The Game Of Mao To Teach Sensemaking And Cultural Approaches To Communication, Nina O'Brien, Cynthia Wang
Discourse: The Journal of the SCASD
This interactive classroom activity invites students to interrogate their common sense and taken-for-granted communication practices and assumptions. In the course of playing a “concealed rules” game, students enact the ritual view of communication and the process of sensemaking. The activity provides an experiential model for clarifying complex themes as well as for actively constructing student understanding of the theories. The activity directly challenges norms of classroom communication and interaction and promotes thoughtful and engaged classroom discussion and reflection. Instructors are provided clear instructions, recommended student readings and sample discussion questions. The activity and debrief usually require about one hour of …
Immigration Encounter: Relevance Of Emotions In Communication, Chrystal Helmcke, Renee Bourdeaux, William Mari
Immigration Encounter: Relevance Of Emotions In Communication, Chrystal Helmcke, Renee Bourdeaux, William Mari
Discourse: The Journal of the SCASD
Students desire meaningful ways to dissect and explore confusing and challenging concepts. Chief among these in our world today are the multifaceted issues and exceptionally complex discourses involved in immigration. The guided visualization in this G.I.F.T. may be used to demonstrate emotions, the five cannons of rhetoric, intercultural communication, proofs of persuasion, or theories within the critical or phenomenological traditions. This guided visualization also adapts well to a blended classroom (with students onsite and offsite) since the instructor leads students through the visualization. Through this activity, students will describe the emotions that underpin communication about immigration, interpret how emotions influence …
Travel Analysis Portfolio: Applying Theories Of Cross-Cultural Communication To The Task Of Personal Travel Planning, Kelly L. Mckay-Semmler
Travel Analysis Portfolio: Applying Theories Of Cross-Cultural Communication To The Task Of Personal Travel Planning, Kelly L. Mckay-Semmler
Discourse: The Journal of the SCASD
Intercultural encounters are increasingly common occurrences in our professional and personal lives, thus an awareness and working knowledge of cultural differences is important to competent communication. In this semester-long activity, students learn and apply theories and concepts about cross-cultural variation to an in-depth case analysis of a specific culture of their choosing. Individual components of the assignment progressively parallel course content, providing students multiple opportunities to actively apply their growing knowledge base to a specific cultural context. This lesson plan provides instructors with an overview of the semester-long activity from beginning to end, sample project components, reference information for up-to-date …
Exploring Expectancy Violations Theory And Proxemics With The Impractical Jokers, Andie Malterud, Ashley Phillips, Kaitlyn Voges
Exploring Expectancy Violations Theory And Proxemics With The Impractical Jokers, Andie Malterud, Ashley Phillips, Kaitlyn Voges
Discourse: The Journal of the SCASD
Proxemics and expectancy violations theory (EVT) are the groundwork for understanding interpersonal and nonverbal communication. Previous research has indicated students retain information long-term when humor and videos that form memorable messages are incorporated into the classroom. The activity discussed in this GIFT uses the popular comedy show, Impractical Jokers, to help students apply abstract concepts to real-life examples. Several discussion questions are suggested to help students critically analyze the videos and recognize proxemics and EVT. The second set of discussion questions asks students to consider their expectations, how their expectations are formed, why some individuals have different expectations, and why …
An Analysis Of Unvaccinated College Students’ Hpv And Hpv Vaccine Knowledge And Preferred Information Source, Keith Richards, Hannah Priest Catalano, Katherine Hyatt Hawkins
An Analysis Of Unvaccinated College Students’ Hpv And Hpv Vaccine Knowledge And Preferred Information Source, Keith Richards, Hannah Priest Catalano, Katherine Hyatt Hawkins
Discourse: The Journal of the SCASD
Receiving accurate human papillomavirus (HPV)/HPV vaccination information from a trusted source coupled with adequate HPV/HPV vaccination knowledge may increase college students’ likelihood to be vaccinated. This elicitation study, grounded in the information construct of the information–motivation–behavioral skills model, used a nonexperimental design with a convenience sample of 114 unvaccinated college students to assess HPV and HPV vaccine knowledge, desire for more information, and preferred source of HPV vaccine information. The sample answered slightly over half (58%) of questions related to knowledge of HPV correctly, 63% of the questions related to HPV vaccine knowledge correctly, and one-third (36%) wanted more information …
Adorno In The Digital Age: Consumerism, Ideology, And Participation In The Beatles: Rock Band, Scott Haden Church
Adorno In The Digital Age: Consumerism, Ideology, And Participation In The Beatles: Rock Band, Scott Haden Church
Discourse: The Journal of the SCASD
This essay presents an analysis of the ideologies in the online trailer to the virtual musical performance video game The Beatles: Rock Band. This analysis presents a contribution to the scholarly conversation by using Theodor W. Adorno’s theories, a novel and underutilized heuristic for analyzing video games. The trailer to The Beatles: Rock Band (Harmonix, 2009) promotes the ideology of consumerism through its mythologized depiction of the Beatles. The interactivity of video games may combat Adorno’s condemnation of the culture industry, allowing resistance to its hegemony via the performed de(con)struction of the text.
Camoface: Performances Of Ruralism In Duck Dynasty, Jason Jordan
Camoface: Performances Of Ruralism In Duck Dynasty, Jason Jordan
Discourse: The Journal of the SCASD
In recent years, portrayals of the supposedly “real” exploits of rural persons in the United States have proliferated across the mediasphere. This paper examines the first season of the television show Duck Dynasty as an exemplar of this genre of entertainment. Using the concepts of ruralism, rurality, and rusticity the particular performances of rural life evidenced within the show are traced out. Ultimately, I argue that these performances of the rural constitute a strategic rhetoric that seeks to control what counts as authentic rurality. I term these sorts of strategic performances of rural authenticity as “camoface.”

Reluctant Witnesses: Best Practices For Engaging Individuals In Challenging Title Ix Investigations, Dan Schorr, J.D., Alyssa-Rae Mcginn
Title IX Summit
Participating in a sexual misconduct or harassment investigation as a party or witness is difficult, and it often involves sharing information that is uncomfortable, personal, and triggering. Title IX and sexual misconduct investigations are rooted in interviews with those holding important knowledge of the events in question, but when interviewees are reluctant to speak or do not wish to be forthcoming, the investigative process suffers. This session provides guidance for gaining the participation of a reluctant party or witness, including making a good first impression, establishing rapport and trust, framing questions in order to obtain the right information, and communicating …
What Does Effective Training And Education On Sexual Violence Look Like?, Brooke Mascagni, Phd, Emily Ralph
What Does Effective Training And Education On Sexual Violence Look Like?, Brooke Mascagni, Phd, Emily Ralph
Title IX Summit
The Obama-era OCR guidelines attempted to eradicate rape culture on college campuses through Title IX compliance. But compliance alone, in light of the Trump administration's proposed new rules, will lessen colleges' liability and potentially create traumatic circumstances for survivors of sexual violence in the adjudication process. In this highly polarized political environment, we must prioritize building trust among students, faculty members, and community practitioners who specialize in gender-based violence. Our most vulnerable students–– women, particularly women of color, and LGBTQ & gender non-conforming–– need a proper institutional response from college administrators to balance the scales of power. In this talk, …
Empowered Learning Systems In Student Success, Craig C. Laupheimer
Empowered Learning Systems In Student Success, Craig C. Laupheimer
Education | Master's Theses
Abstract/Description
Although various support systems are attempted by public schools to cause changes in student motivation and academic performance, students continue to consistently under perform and doubt their academic potential. A literature review revealed a growing body of research outlining a direct relationship between internal beliefs and performance outcomes. Yet little has been done to understand student thought patterns from their perspective, or to what extent they are able to recognize and address the internal systems of language, belief, and emotion that interact with learning. By analyzing a wide range of student perspectives, this study examines what tools and strategies …
Mapping Society: The Spatial Dimensions Of Social Cartography, By Laura Vaughan, Christina E. Dando
Mapping Society: The Spatial Dimensions Of Social Cartography, By Laura Vaughan, Christina E. Dando
Geography and Geology Faculty Publications
Laura Vaughan, in Mapping Society: The Spatial Dimensions of Social Cartography, suggests that social maps can be ‘records of social enquiry in relation to the role of urban configuration in shaping social patterns over time’ and that, through their analysis, scholars can better understand ‘the power of space in shaping society over time’. To Vaughan, a professor of Urban Form and Society at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London, social maps capture a moment in time and can be read to consider life at that moment: ‘does it capture data in sufficient detail that we can learn from …
Peering Inside The ‘Black Box’: The Impact Of Management-Side Representatives On The Industrial Relations Climate Of Organizations, Shelagh Campbell, Johanna Weststar
Peering Inside The ‘Black Box’: The Impact Of Management-Side Representatives On The Industrial Relations Climate Of Organizations, Shelagh Campbell, Johanna Weststar
Management and Organizational Studies Publications
The labor climate of an organization can have a great impact on productivity and efficiency. Managing this climate is often left to union stewards and management-side labor relations representatives. While there is a large literature on the role of union stewards, little is written about the role that management-side labor relations representatives play in establishing or maintaining positive labor-management relations. Building from a series of interviews with labor relations representatives in Canada and a nationwide pilot study of frontline industrial relations workers, we model the role of the labor relations representatives and their specific job actions in the established model …
Big Tech Surveillance Could Damage Democracy, Chase Johnson
Big Tech Surveillance Could Damage Democracy, Chase Johnson
University Author Recognition Bibliography: 2019
Data is often called the oil of the 21st century.
The more tech companies know about their users, the more effectively they can direct them to goods and services that they are likely to buy. The more companies know about their users, the more competitive they are in the market.
Custom-tailored capitalism is what has made Google, Facebook, Amazon and others the richest companies in the world. This profit incentive has turned big tech into a competitive field of mass intelligence gathering. The better and more comprehensive the data, the higher profits will be.
But this business model – what …

The Divided Labor Of Attack Advertising In Congressional Campaigns, Kenneth M. Miller
The Divided Labor Of Attack Advertising In Congressional Campaigns, Kenneth M. Miller
Political Science Faculty Research
This article offers a theory of how party networks divide the labor of attacking opponents. Using an extensive data set of campaign advertising from the 2010 and 2012 congressional elections augmented with Nielsen television ratings data, it is shown that candidates attack opponents less when supporting outside groups attack more. Due to differences in how outside groups and candidates attack opponents, when candidates partially outsource attack advertising to independent expenditure groups, attacks in that campaign become more issue and policy based. Thus, in perhaps an unintended consequence of the divided labor of attack advertising, outside group involvement makes it more …

How Organizational Cultures Moderate The Relationship Between Demographic Diversity And Intragroup Conflict: A Meta-Analysis, Ryan K. Jacobson
How Organizational Cultures Moderate The Relationship Between Demographic Diversity And Intragroup Conflict: A Meta-Analysis, Ryan K. Jacobson
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Research suggests that as work groups become more demographically diverse, they are more likely to experience relationship and task conflict (Barak, 2016; Holck, Muhr, & Villeseche, 2016; Mohammed & Angell, 2004). In an increasingly diverse, global workforce, one way to mitigate this conflict might be to promote organizational cultures that support group harmony and respect, such as team-oriented culture (Galinsky et al., 2015; Lambert, 2016; Nielsen, 2017; Williams & O’Reilly, 1998). In this paper, we sought to test the moderating potential of organizational culture on the relationship between worker diversity and conflict using a meta-analysis. Using 40 samples, we examined …
The Roles Of Pragmatic Language And Theory Of Mind In The Adaptive Communication Skills Of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Taja Estrada
Clinical Psychology Dissertations
Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) exhibit marked social communication impairments. Research suggests that these deficits often lead to delays in adaptive behavior, such as adaptive communication. In this study, I examined the roles of two social constructs, pragmatic language and theory of mind (ToM), in the adaptive communication abilities of young children with and without ASD. Thirteen children with ASD (31% female; M age = 58.08 months) and 24 children with typical development (58% female; M age = 52.42 months) between the ages of 3:0 and 6:5 were assessed. Adaptive communication was measured by the Functional Communication subscale of …

Efficient Empiricism: Streamlining Teaching, Research, And Learning In Empirical Courses, Tomas Dvorak, Simon Halliday, Michael O'Hara, Aaron Swoboda
Economics: Faculty Publications
The increasing importance of empirical analysis in economics highlights the need for efficient ways to bring these skills to the classroom. R Markdown is a new technology that provides a solution by integrating writing, statistical work and computation into a single document. R Markdown benefits students and instructors by streamlining teaching, research, and collaboration. We report on our use of R Markdown in undergraduate teaching, including core courses, electives, and senior theses. We discuss the costs and benefits of adoption, and explain the advantages of R Markdown in teaching reproducibility of empirical work, avoiding time-consuming and error-prone ‘cut and paste,’ …
Neuro-Correlates Of Word Processing Among Four-And-Five-Year-Old Children From Homes Varying In Socio-Economic Status, Wendy Olsen
Neuro-Correlates Of Word Processing Among Four-And-Five-Year-Old Children From Homes Varying In Socio-Economic Status, Wendy Olsen
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
A large body of research relates families’ socioeconomic status (SES) to child language development (Hoff & Tian, 2005). Results from these studies indicate preschoolers from low SES backgrounds may have underdeveloped linguistic foundations required for future academic success (Sirin, 2005; Lacouri & Tissington, 2011). These differences have been said to create a 30 million word-gap between the language experiences of low and middle to high SES children by the age of 3 years. Thus, children who come from lower SES backgrounds often lack the vocabulary knowledge used in school and in textbooks (Hart & Risley, 1995). One index of SES …

In-Groups, Out-Groups And The Challenge Of Increasing Diversity Through Intentional Inclusion And Equity Practices: Exploring The Roles Of Urban Land Managers, Affinity Groups, And Alaska Residents, Susan Newton, Amy Markle, Laurie Stuart
Dissertations
Public lands belong to all of us. Yet, data indicate that some Americans are participating more than others in the decision-making processes that guide use, access, and availability of our public lands and resources. Three researchers investigated three ways public participation intersects with the decision-making process, with a focus on illuminating barriers to full public participation as well as potential bridges to increasing equitable inclusion. Researchers interviewed urban land managers and affinity group leaders, surveyed a sample of residents in Alaska, and examined public testimony from a city council discussion about an inclusion resolution in Homer, Alaska. Qualitative and quantitative …
Making Imaginaries: Identity, Value, And Place In The Maker Movement In Detroit And Portland, Stephen Joseph Marotta
Making Imaginaries: Identity, Value, And Place In The Maker Movement In Detroit And Portland, Stephen Joseph Marotta
Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation explores the maker economy and culture in Detroit, MI and Portland, OR and queries the "Made in Place" branding strategy that relies so heavily on a shared imagination of cities, identities, and values. Bridging the gap between urban economic development, political economy, and affect theory, this dissertation is centrally concerned with how imagination works as a commons and how such "imaginaries" shape each city's milieu of small, entrepreneurial, artisanal producers ("makers"). The constituent elements of "Made in" branding "made" and "place" suggest common understandings of each; this sense of coherence is critical for how value is added to …

Attendance Trends Threaten Future Operations Of America’S State Park Systems, Jordan Smith, Emily J. Wilkins, Yu-Fai Leung
Attendance Trends Threaten Future Operations Of America’S State Park Systems, Jordan Smith, Emily J. Wilkins, Yu-Fai Leung
Environment and Society Faculty Publications
This research examines how the operating expenditures of America’s state park systems will be affected by a continued growth in attendance consistent with observed trends as well as potential climate futures. We construct a longitudinal panel dataset (1984–2017) describing the operations and characteristics of all 50 state park systems. These data are analyzed with a time-varying stochastic frontier model. Estimates from the model are used to forecast operating expenditures to midcentury under four different scenarios. The first scenario assumes annual attendance within each state park system will continue to grow (or decline) at the same average annual rate that it …

The Partisan And Policy Motivations Of Political Donors Seeking Surrogate Representation In House Elections, Anne E. Baker
The Partisan And Policy Motivations Of Political Donors Seeking Surrogate Representation In House Elections, Anne E. Baker
Political Science
Non-constituent donors constitute an increasingly important fundraising base for members of the House. These donors are theorized to be seeking “surrogate representation” by buying additional representation rather than relying solely upon representation provided by their own House members. However, precisely why they contribute in this way remains unclear. Using data from the Cooperative Congressional Election Studies (CCES) 2008- 2014 in a series of logistic models, I investigate whether self-reported donors make contributions to House races outside of their home states for policy or partisan reasons. I uncover evidence that surrogate seekers make their out-of-state contributions to recover partisan representation and …
