”Cyberworld” As A Theme For A University-Wide First-Year Common Course, Kristen Przyborski, Frank Breitinger, Lauren Beck, Ronald S. Harichandran

Engineering and Applied Science Education Faculty Publications

Nowadays we all live in a cyber world and use the internet for emailing, banking, streaming video, shopping, reading news, or other activities. Given all the time people spend online, it is important that all students (regardless of their major) learn some basics about living in a cyber world, e.g., strategies for online safety, impact of artificial intelligence, digital forensics or ancestry.com. To facilitate students from many majors to learn about important issues related to the internet, eight faculty from a variety of disciplines at the University of New Haven integrated the theme of Cyber World into our team-taught, first-year …

The Sensitivity Of Sector Stock Returns To Exchange Rate Risks In Nigeria, M. A. Adebiyi, M. O. Abeng Jun 2019

The Sensitivity Of Sector Stock Returns To Exchange Rate Risks In Nigeria, M. A. Adebiyi, M. O. Abeng

Economic and Financial Review

Exchange rate exposure has been identified in the literature as one of the standard metrics for measuring the performance of stock returns in both advanced and developing economies. This study adopts the capital market approach in investigating the effects of exchange rate exposure on stock returns in Nigeria, using monthly data spanning 2009 to 2018. The findings show that three sector stock returns, namely the NSE30, pension and banking indices, were significantly vulnerable to nominal effective exchange rate and bilateral exchange rates shocks. The non-significance of energy sector, proxied by the oil and gas, to exchange rate risk, is puzzling, …

Current Account Balance And Economic Growth In Nigeria: An Empirical Investigation, G. K. Sanni, A. U. Musa, Z. Sani Jun 2019

Current Account Balance And Economic Growth In Nigeria: An Empirical Investigation, G. K. Sanni, A. U. Musa, Z. Sani

Economic and Financial Review

This study examined the relationship between current account balance and economic growth in Nigeria. Auto Regressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) Bounds Testing methodology was employed to investigate the relationship, using annual data spanning from 1970 – 2016. The study found a long-run relationship between the current account balance, the real gross domestic product (GDP) growth and bilateral real exchange rate in Nigeria. The positive relationship between real GDP growth and the current account balance implies that increase in real GDP growth would lead to an improvement in the current account balance. However, the study found a negative relationship between real exchange …

Estimation Of Fiscal Multipliers And Its Macroeconomic Impact: The Case Of Nigeria, D. J. Penzin, E. T. Adamgbe Jun 2019

Estimation Of Fiscal Multipliers And Its Macroeconomic Impact: The Case Of Nigeria, D. J. Penzin, E. T. Adamgbe

Economic and Financial Review

Fiscal multipliers are important tools for macroeconomic projections and policy design. However, very little is known about the size in developing countries, given the complexity of their estimation. The unavailability of reliable high frequency data and structural characteristics of these countries also make the estimation of fiscal multipliers difficult, in such countries. This paper estimated fiscal multipliers associated with government spending and tax-related revenue for Nigeria using quarterly data, spanning 1985: Q1 to 2015 Q4. The structural vector autoregression (SVAR) methodology suggested by Blanchard and Perotti (2002) was utilised in the model. The SVAR framework applied followed the approach by …

The Central Bank Balance Sheet As A Tool For Monetary Policy: Evidence From Nigeria, E. U. Kure, O. O. Mbutor, U. A. Rotimi, Y. Adamu Jun 2019

The Central Bank Balance Sheet As A Tool For Monetary Policy: Evidence From Nigeria, E. U. Kure, O. O. Mbutor, U. A. Rotimi, Y. Adamu

Economic and Financial Review

The study examined the impact of the Central bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) balance sheet on the growth of private sector credit, economic growth and price stability during the period 2006-2017. Balance sheet indicators used were total assets of the CBN and proxy for asset distribution. Employing a vector autoregressive (VAR) model, the study found balance sheet policies to be effective in reducing cost of credit, increase in bank lending, economic activities and a decline in inflation. However, the effects favour asset dispersion (credit easing) against growth in assets (quantitative easing), implying that the Bank can, in the short- to medium-term, …

Aim Our library’s three main computing areas are the primary computer labs on campus, with two of them managed by librarians. Our staff mediated sign-in system made for long lines, delays, and more than a few misplaced student ID cards. After several semesters of monitoring issues and securing funding, the library implemented a new sign-in system for computers in the library’s labs. This presentation discusses the types of evidence we collected and used over several stages of this transition to launch and continually improve the self sign-in process.

Methods After selecting and deploying the new self sign-in software, library staff …

The Montclair Map Task: Balance, Efficacy, And Efficiency In Conversational Interaction, Jennifer Pardo, Adelya Urmanche, Hannah Gash, Jaclyn Wiener, Nicholas Mason, Sherilyn Wilman-Depena, Keagan Francis, Alexa Decker

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This paper introduces a conversational speech corpus collected during the completion of a map-matching task that is available for research purposes via the Montclair State University Digital Commons Data Repository. The Montclair Map Task is a new, role-neutral conversational task that involves paired iconic maps with labeled landmarks and a path drawn from a start point, around various landmarks, to a finish mark. One advantage of this task-oriented corpus is the ability to derive independent objective measures of task performance for both members of a conversational pair that can be related to aspects of communicative style. A total of 96 …

You Lead Like A Girl: Gender And Children’S Leadership Development, Alexa J. Trumpy, Marissa Elliott Jun 2019

You Lead Like A Girl: Gender And Children’S Leadership Development, Alexa J. Trumpy, Marissa Elliott

Faculty Creative and Scholarly Works

Recent leadership initiatives encourage children, particularly girls, to defy gender stereotypes. Yet, those creating and participating in these initiatives, like all members of our culture, have their own gender biases, have received gender socialization, and live in a society where the masculine is more valued than the feminine. We conducted participant observation of two gender-segregated leadership summer camps to examine how camp counselors and directors teach leadership to boys and girls. We find counselors unintentionally reinforce gender stereotypes and promote gender-typical behavior while attempting to break down these same stereotypes and behavioral expectations. We argue the gender-segregated environment leads to …

Using Qualitative Behaviour Assessment To Investigate Human-Animal Relationships In Zoo-Housed Giraffes (Giraffa Camelopardalis), Freisha Patel, Françoise Wemelsfelder, Samantha J. Ward Jun 2019

Using Qualitative Behaviour Assessment To Investigate Human-Animal Relationships In Zoo-Housed Giraffes (Giraffa Camelopardalis), Freisha Patel, Françoise Wemelsfelder, Samantha J. Ward

Human-Animal Relationships Collection

Human-Animal Relationships (HAR) in zoos develop from repeated interactions between animals and their caretakers. HAR have been shown to affect health and welfare in farm animals, but limited zoo-based studies exist. This study investigates the association between the qualitative behaviour assessment (QBA) of emotional expression in giraffes and keeper action score in four types of keeper-animal interaction (KAI). Three giraffes generating 38 clips. QBA, using a free-choice profiling methodology, was applied instructing 18 observers to assess giraffe expressions shown in these clips. QBA scores were analysed using Generalized Procrustes Analysis. Keeper actions during each KAI event were rated by an …

Training To Inhibit Negative Content Affects Memory And Rumination, Shimrit Daches, Nilly Mor, Paula T. Hertel Jun 2019

Training To Inhibit Negative Content Affects Memory And Rumination, Shimrit Daches, Nilly Mor, Paula T. Hertel

Psychology Faculty Research

Depressive rumination, the tendency to engage in repetitive self-focus in response to distress, seems to be affected by a variety of cognitive biases that in turn maintain negative emotional states. The current study examined whether the difficulty in inhibiting attention to negative information contributes to rumination and to rumination-related biases in memory. Seventy-nine ruminators underwent a 3-week computer-based training, designed to increase either inhibition of negative words or attention to them. On immediate post-training trials, as well as on 2-week follow-up tests, we found evidence for transfer of inhibition training. Training effects also occurred on session-by-session and post-training measures of …
