Murder And Machismo: Behind The Motivations Of Salvadoran Women Asylum Seekers, Victoria Colbert May 2019

Murder And Machismo: Behind The Motivations Of Salvadoran Women Asylum Seekers, Victoria Colbert

Master's Theses

This thesis aims to draw connections between a culture of machismo, an ideological gender belief distinct to Latin America with heavy traces of patriarchy and misogyny, and the motivations of Salvadoran women seeking asylum in the United States. I develop these connections by first reviewing the literature on structural violence, the form of violence wherein the structure or social institution prevents certain demographics of people from meeting their basic needs and living their optimal lives (Galtung, 1969). I repeatedly use structural violence and its functions to parallel the operations of patriarchy and machismo to suggest that violence against women (VAW) …

Training To Inhibit Negative Content Affects Memory And Rumination, Shimrit Daches, Nilly Mor, Paula T. Hertel May 2019

Training To Inhibit Negative Content Affects Memory And Rumination, Shimrit Daches, Nilly Mor, Paula T. Hertel

Paula T Hertel

Depressive rumination, the tendency to engage in repetitive self-focus in response to distress, seems to be affected by a variety of cognitive biases that in turn maintain negative emotional states. The current study examined whether the difficulty in inhibiting attention to negative information contributes to rumination and to rumination-related biases in memory. Seventy-nine ruminators underwent a 3-week computer-based training, designed to increase either inhibition of negative words or attention to them. On immediate post-training trials, as well as on 2-week follow-up tests, we found evidence for transfer of inhibition training. Training effects also occurred on session-by-session and post-training measures of …

Recovery Capital In Individuals With A Gambling Disorder, Belle Gavriel-Fried

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

Recovery capital in individuals with a gambling disorder

Recovery from gambling disorder (GD) is often a challenging process that requires individuals to muster multiple resources. Recovery capital (RC) is a conceptual framework describing the internal and external resources individuals may access and utilize during recovery in a range of human, social, financial, community, and cultural domains. This conceptual framework was developed and implemented mainly in the field of substance addiction and represents a paradigmatic shift from pathology and illness to strengths. This presentation reports findings from a project that examined the RC concept in 140 individuals with a life-time gambling …

Blending Inductive And Deductive Processes In The English/Language Arts Classroom, Joseph M. Lynch May 2019

Blending Inductive And Deductive Processes In The English/Language Arts Classroom, Joseph M. Lynch

The Advocate

This article attempts to demonstrate how the inductive and deductive processing modes function together. Educational models associated with an inductive learning process provide a great opportunity for students to assess their accountability in the learning process. However, the lessons gleaned from such an inductive approach can be more insight-provoking when a synthesis of (or at least access to) deductive processing occurs. The topic is presented in two parts: The first part constitutes a review of the inductive/deductive dynamic through research, study, and theory across multiple learning contexts. The second part presents a qualitative study and data examples for the purposes …

Examining Online Communities Through Wicca, Kathryn Lawson May 2019

Examining Online Communities Through Wicca, Kathryn Lawson

Augsburg Honors Review

Wicca (or Witchcraft) is one particular religion that has benefitted from the members' ability to utilize the communications of the Internet for networking with other Wiccans, sharing religious information and experience, and even conducting online rituals. However, this spread of Wiccan resources on the Internet has fueled the debate among people of many faiths over whether or not religious ceremonies and gatherings online qualify as a substitute for assembling in person. Herein resides the controversy which I will address by taking a closer look at the Wiccan cofltmunity on the Internet and exploring the differing viewpoints of this topic.

Humanitarian Intervention: Exploring The Number Of Ctvilian Casualties In Confiict Zones Where Peace-Enforcement Missions And Peace Keeping Mission Have Been Utilized, Konye Obaji Ori

Augsburg Honors Review

The UN peacekeepers-the Blue Berets-form one of the largest, best equipped, and international forces in the world. Yet the organization's history is strewn with examples of its inability to keep the peace in places such as Srebrenica in Bosnia, Rwanda, and Darfur. Currently there are UN peacekeeping operations running in 16 different locations throughout five continents from Haiti to Timor, and 120 countries contribute 100,000 troops who are paid out of the UN's annual budget of $7.1 billion. But the UN forces lack the authority to impose themselves on the fighters. This study explores whether there is a need to …

The Rhetoric Of Public Support And The Foundations Of Educaiion In Montana, Micah Everson May 2019

The Rhetoric Of Public Support And The Foundations Of Educaiion In Montana, Micah Everson

Augsburg Honors Review

In 2005, the Supreme Court of Montana presented its final and unanimous opinion in the case of Columbia Falls Elem. School Dist. No. 6 v. State. A public coalition thus forced the state to acknowledge problems in its educational system and to work to- wards fixing them. This public interest in education in Montana is not a recent phenomenon.

Is Charismatic Leadership More Influentiai, In Societal Or Organizational Settings, Anna Kessler May 2019

Is Charismatic Leadership More Influentiai, In Societal Or Organizational Settings, Anna Kessler

Augsburg Honors Review

It is important to contrast charismatic leadership in the political-societal context with that in organizational settings to gain knowledge about the relative strengths and weaknesses of each of them. Regardless of the feasibility and validity of this comparison, it can be stated that the influence of to- day's large corporations is continually growing, also substantially affecting international politics and society as a whole. Hence, taking the increasing interconnectivity of nations and corporations into account, it is important to examine the similarities and differences of visionary leadership in both contexts in order to draw conclusions about their most successful application, which …

The Unpredictable Positive Effects Of Sports Gambling: Gamblers Think Losing Feels Worse Than It Actually Feels, Guy Voichek, Nathan Novemsky May 2019

The Unpredictable Positive Effects Of Sports Gambling: Gamblers Think Losing Feels Worse Than It Actually Feels, Guy Voichek, Nathan Novemsky

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

Implications statement

Gamblers underestimate how much fun small wagers add to enjoying sports events. They think losing will feel worse than it really does. Simple reminder can correct this misprediction.

Abstract

When considering whether to gamble on a sporting event, people may ask themselves how winning or losing will affect their experience. In a series of four experiments, we find that people under-appreciate the positive effect of gambling on watching sporting events, in a way that causes them to under-value the opportunity to place a small stakes gamble. While participants predict that a gamble will enhance or diminish an experience …

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

Abstract

Recent literature suggests that intelligence is positively associated with economic outcomes involving risky decisions such as investment portfolio returns (Grinblatt et al. 2012). Gambling is a form of entertainment in which consumers buy risky products with negative expected values. However, the relationship between intelligence and gambling consumption is not understood yet. We use a unique individual-level data set from Finland to investigate how intelligence predicts gambling participation and expenditure. Our data consists of betting data from a monopoly horse race betting operator (betting participation and expenditure on betting), background information on the Finnish adult population from Statistics Finland (e.g. …

In Search Of Equilibrium – How Regulatory Changes Impact The Gambling Industry In Poland, Sebastian Meitz, Stanisław Pogorzelski, Przemysław Bloch

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

The so-called Polish “gambling affair” of 2009 resulted in the adoption of a new Act on Gambling. The regulation significantly changed the legal environment in Poland. It was also the starting point of what we identified as the search of equilibrium - a number of further legislative changes aimed at creating a sustainable environment for gambling. Some market segments became delegalized, some monopolized, and others liberalized. The Polish Ministry of Finance and the parliament tried to find the right balance between consumer protection, business growth, and government revenue. A goal that is still to be achieved.

This article examines the …

Rewarding Responsible Gambling May Increase Tool Use And Attitudinal Loyalty: A Survey Of Members Who Do And Do Not Currently Use Responsible Gambling Tools, Samantha Hollingshead, Michael Wohl

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

Abstract: Loyalty programs are a ubiquitous marketing strategy in the casino industry. Via members’ player accounts, many programs offer access to a money and/or time limit setting tool. Unfortunately, the rate of engagement with limit tools is exceedingly low, which is discouraging from a responsible gambling (RG) perspective. A possible route to increase limit tool use is to reward players for using them with program points. Doing so may also place the casino in a positive light, thus increasing attitudinal loyalty. To test this idea, loyalty program members who use RG tools (N=90) and who have never used RG tools …

A phenomenological study within the gaming industry is currently being conducted to determine influential indicators within business operations. Based on interviews of executive leadership at global companies, participants disclosed the environmental developments at their organization based on industry norms and the ability to develop/execute environmental initiatives. Four themes emerged: the leader’s ideology and the political climate; the company’s founding principles; support from the industry and/or within the company; and the ability to change industry dynamics. Each leader touched on these four points. Regardless of department type, level of leadership, and the desire to be globally conscious, all participants remarked on …

Does Near Win Affect People's Investment Behavior?, Jia Yuan

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

Near win is a special kind of failure that comes closely to actual success. It shows up frequently in people’s investment behavior. Only a few studies have researched on the relation between near win and its impact on the future investment. And in the literature, there are conflicting results on this issue. In this paper, we examine the effect of near win on people’s investment amount by exploiting a unique panel individual level lottery purchase data with over 100,000 players which trace each of their purchases for several months. We find that people who have experienced a near win would …

"Oh, Those Horsemen!" Regulatory Change And Cultural Peculiarity In Finland, Pauliina Raento May 2019

"Oh, Those Horsemen!" Regulatory Change And Cultural Peculiarity In Finland, Pauliina Raento

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

Abstract

Finland's three gambling monopoly operators merged into one state-owned entity in 2017. A particular challenge to the process came from its smallest constituent, the tote company Fintoto, its owner, the national Trotting and Horse Breeding Association, and the equine industry’s cultural peculiarity.

The process is examined from the perspective of the equine industry, which had to choose between joining or not joining the merger. The exchanges between 'horse people' and state regulators, the equine industry’s resistance and decision to participate in the merger, and concerns about impact are traced from Finland's leading equine newspaper, in 2015–2017. The articles are …

Public Interests And Economic Regulation Of Gambling, Rein Halbersma, Joost Poort May 2019

Public Interests And Economic Regulation Of Gambling, Rein Halbersma, Joost Poort

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

In the Netherlands, the Betting and Gaming Act from 1964 largely determines the current structure of gambling markets. The policy was to channel consumers to a limited number of licensed operators. This led to state-owned monopolies for lotteries, sports betting and casinos, a private monopoly for horse race betting, a limited number of privately owned charity lotteries, and a large number of private slot machines operators.

Pending legislation proposes an online market without a limit on the number of operators. Furthermore, state ownership will be phased out, and introduced legislation to privatizing and expanding the number of casinos. The current …

How The Valence Of Vicarious Contact Influences Dehumanization Of Individuals Who Are Homeless, Makenna Moscatel, Ashleigh Roth, Brittany Tausen

School of Psychology, Family, and Community Research Conference

Can simply hearing about another person's experience with an individual who is homeless influence one's own tendency to dehumanize these individuals? Participants (N = 141) were randomly assigned to read about a positive or negative encounter a volunteer had with an individual experiencing homelessness before rating themselves and homeless individuals on a series of human-like traits. Results revealed that when controlling for how similar participants felt to the author of a story, the valence of the encounter altered perceptions of the cognitive abilities believed to characterize individuals who are homeless as well as the emotional abilities ascribed to the self.

Stability Of Moral Traits (Justice And Humanity) In Emerging Adults: A Longitudinal Analysis., Samantha Jacobson, Julia Devere, Maddie Grigg, Mikayla Logue, Lazarus Scarbrough, Michael Roe

School of Psychology, Family, and Community Research Conference

Emerging adulthood is considered a particularly important period for moral maturity in adulthood, and for personality changes that relate closely to character development. Research also suggests that once moral traits develop in emerging adults, they remain relatively stable in both score and rank; and they are among the most stable of character traits examined. Using the VIA Character Strength Survey, the current research is investigating the stability of the moral traits justice and humanity in comparison to a subset of character traits from other domains. These data were collected from SPU students early in their college years and again as …

Development Of Character Prospection In Emerging Adult Search And Presence Of Calling, Samantha Jacobson, Julia Devere, Maddie Grigg, Mikayla Logue, Lazarus Scarbrough, Michael Roe

School of Psychology, Family, and Community Research Conference

Emerging adulthood is considered a particularly important period for seeking life roles that provide a sense of purpose or meaningfulness. It has been proposed that character prospection, the ability to predict change to one's character in the near future, is an integral part of personality development in emerging adults. The current research operationalizes character prospection as the relationship between search for calling in students early in their college years and presence of calling in students nearing their graduation. Among a variety of variables being explored, we hypothesize spirituality as a mediator of character prospection, due to the role of transcendent …

What Is A Game Of Chance? An Application To Loot Boxes, Wessel Oomens May 2019

What Is A Game Of Chance? An Application To Loot Boxes, Wessel Oomens

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

The traditional landscape of games of chance such as lotteries, betting, casinos and slots has become intertwined with complex financial products as well as digital games with elements of chance.

The Netherlands Gambling Authority has issued a guidance paper outlining a five-step decision process in order to determine whether a game classifies as gambling:

  • Threshold: is the number of providers, players and the amount money involved considerable enough to warrant spending resources in assessing the game?
  • Overlap: is there potential overlap with other rules and regulations, in particular those governing financial products?
  • Prize: does the game award its winners with …

Binge Eating And Gambling Are Prospectively Associated With Common And Distinct Deficits In Emotion Regulation Among Community Women, Sarah M. Farstad, Kristin M. Von Ranson

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

This study compared facets of emotion regulation associated prospectively with binge eating and problem gambling to elucidate similarities and differences between eating pathology and a behavioral addiction. Women from the community (N = 202) who engaged in at-risk binge eating (n = 79), at-risk gambling (n = 36), or both behaviors (n = 87) completed four online assessments over six months. Baseline and six-month surveys assessed self-reported emotion dysregulation (including negative urgency and positive urgency), binge eating, and gambling; the abbreviated two- and four-month surveys assessed binge eating and gambling only. Binge eating and problem gambling were …

Catalytic Leadership: How A President's Language Influences National Outcomes, Codieann Dehaas, Fei Lu, Paul Yost, Stormy Mccarragher, Mackenzie Allison, Jessie Cannon

School of Psychology, Family, and Community Research Conference

This study investigated the extent to which potential-focused leader language (inclusive, future-focused, and honest) is catalytic. An analysis of US presidential speeches found language was related to historian ratings, unskilled worker wages, and an enduring legacy (internet and book references), but unrelated to social (e.g., patents) and societal (e.g., prison population) outcomes.

Predictors Of Quality And Meaning In Life In Independently Living Older Adults: A Quantitative Replication Of Weinstock And Bond (2018), Samantha Jacobson, Maddie Grigg, Naomi Isenberg, Mikayla Logue, Karen Tanzy, Nancy Weinbeck, Michael Roe

School of Psychology, Family, and Community Research Conference

In their in depth qualitative study of older adults living in a continuing care facility, Weinstock and Bond (2018) identified three first-order components of quality of life: (1) Sense of community and belonging, (2) resident driven engagement, and (3) individual autonomy, independence, and respect. Our present study attempts to replicate the Weinstock and Bond findings using a quantitative methodology in a sample of independent living residents in Bayview, a retirement community in Seattle. (n = 56, 36 females, 19 males, 1 gender non-conforming, ages 66 — 97 years). Early analyses indicate that only the third component (i.e., autonomy, independence, and …

Images Of Aging And Positive Affect In Independently Living Older Adults: An Update, Samantha Jacobson, Maddie Grigg, Naomi Isenberg, Mikayla Logue, Karen Tanzy, Nancy Weinbeck, Michael Roe

School of Psychology, Family, and Community Research Conference

The World Health Organization (2018) estimates that between 2015 and 2050, the proportion of the world's older adult population will nearly double from 12% to 22%. Despite this increasing prevalence, negative age-related stereotypes persist, cross national and cultural boundaries, and are associated with poor cognitive, mental, and physical health. In contrast, older adults with more positive views of aging experience better mental and physical health, engage in more preventive healthy behaviors, and enjoy greater longevity. These positive aging outcomes are again confirmed in this year's expanded study of independent living residents in Bayview, a retirement community in Seattle. (n = …
