Automating The Authority Control Process, Stacey Wolf
Automating The Authority Control Process, Stacey Wolf
OVGTSL 2019
Authority control is an important part of cataloging since it helps provide consistent access to names, titles, subjects, and genre/forms. There are a variety of methods for providing authority control, ranging from manual, time-consuming processes to automated processes. However, the automated processes often seem out of reach for small libraries when it comes to using a pricey vendor or needing a cataloger with particular expertise. This presentation will introduce several ideas on how to handle authority control using a variety of tools, both paid and free. The presenter will describe how their library handles authority control; compare vendors and programs …
Unbridled Access: Using Wikis To Document Policies And Procedures, Jennifer Gregory, Michael Gregory
Unbridled Access: Using Wikis To Document Policies And Procedures, Jennifer Gregory, Michael Gregory
OVGTSL 2019
Providing staff access to policies and procedures is vital to keeping Technical Services, and the rest of the library system, functioning smoothly. As staff members come and go, good documentation aids training and ensures continuity. The challenge is finding a way to make important resources available to all staff, while keeping it easy to use and up to date.
Both Boone and Campbell County Public Libraries chose to use a wiki to accomplish this goal. Boone’s wiki is less than a year old, while Campbell’s has been in use for over ten years. Though both libraries set out with the …

Reflections On The Impact Of A Library-Based Personal Digital Assistant (Pda) Service, Richard L. Wallace, Nakia Cook, Travis Clamon
Travis Clamon
Objective: The purpose of this study is to determine if a librarybased personal digital assistant (PDA) service is a significant factor in the clinical use of PDAs at an academic medical center. Methods: Health sciences students, faculty, staff, and residents at an academic medical center were the participants. The library has serviced several thousand PDAs. This population was used as the basis for the study group. The study design is a cross-sectional study using survey methodology. The analysis was done based on age, college affiliation, and gender, and answered questions such as frequency of PDA use, usefulness of library’s PDA …
Rda Adoption In U.S. Public Libraries, Sevim Mccutcheon
Rda Adoption In U.S. Public Libraries, Sevim Mccutcheon
OVGTSL 2019
This study surveyed the state of knowledge about, and adoption of, RDA among American public library catalogers. In 2017 an online survey request was e-mailed to 4000 public libraries for the person most responsible for cataloging. Over 300 libraries responded. Data collected nationally included geographic location, education level, training history and needs, library size and budget. Evidence points to demographic factors having a strong influence on levels of RDA knowledge, with a dramatic urban/rural divide. While a majority of catalogers know about RDA, their working knowledge about it differs substantially depending on whether they work in rural or urban library …
A Star Is Born: The Birth Of Content Management & Delivery, Terri Bennett, Todd Grooten
A Star Is Born: The Birth Of Content Management & Delivery, Terri Bennett, Todd Grooten
OVGTSL 2019
Libraries today face a number of challenges, including shrinking budgets, loss of staff and ever-changing technologies. While these may seem stressful to many of us, it also presents a unique opportunity to reexamine and streamline workflows to deliver better service to library patrons.
The Ruth Lilly Medical Library undertook such a process beginning in the summer of 2017. Operational functions of the library including acquisitions, cataloging, document delivery, electronic resources management, interlibrary loan and serials management were all merged into one department named Content Management & Delivery. Members of the department will share the reasons behind the merger of these …

Local History Unbridled: Anecdotal Reflection In Bringing Digitized Microfilm To Digital Commons, Leslie Engelson, Sean J. Mclaughlin, A.J. Boston
OVGTSL 2019
When vinegar syndrome threatened to destroy microfilm containing a vast trove of history, Murray State University Libraries quickly responded. The microfilm--which included one of the broadest collections of local and regional newspapers in the Jackson Purchase area, as well as birth, marriage, and death certificates from Calloway and surrounding counties--was sent to a commercial vendor for digitization with the intention of archiving and making the contents accessible through the institutional repository, Digital Commons. Today, that microfilm is transitioning from moldering in closed stacks to becoming widely accessible to a global pool of researchers.
Presenters will examine the history and logistics …
Unwrapping The Toronto Christmas Market: An Examination Of Tradition And Nostalgia In A Socially Constructed Space, Lydia J. Gibson
Unwrapping The Toronto Christmas Market: An Examination Of Tradition And Nostalgia In A Socially Constructed Space, Lydia J. Gibson
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Little research explores the creation of an outdoor Christmas Market, and the role that tradition and nostalgia theory play in this socially constructed space. This thesis offers an examination of the Toronto Christmas Market, an extravagant Christmas-themed pop-up market in Toronto’s Distillery District neighbourhood, and seeks to understand how the design or execution of the market serves to articulate the tropes of tradition and nostalgia. The market’s sizeable attendance for the 2018 season of an estimated 650,000 people is a sheer testament to the merit it has as a social event in a public space. Through a discourse analysis and …
Marketing Book Collections: Creating Digital Displays Using Alma Analytics, Travis Clamon
Marketing Book Collections: Creating Digital Displays Using Alma Analytics, Travis Clamon
Travis Clamon
Libraries purchase and subscribe to many new book titles each year. Instead of waiting for patrons to find these new titles in Primo, East Tennessee State University decided to develop automated book sliders using data from Alma Analytics. These sliders are now deployed in our subject guides, website, and on our digital displays. This presentation will give participants a high-level overview of our workflow and the tools we used. I'll first go over Alma Analytics, defining collection scopes and required fields. Next, I'll cover our process of retrieving the data via API and formatting the data into a JSON array. …
Building A Better Book Widget: Using Alma Analytics To Automate New Book Discovery, Travis Clamon
Building A Better Book Widget: Using Alma Analytics To Automate New Book Discovery, Travis Clamon
Travis Clamon
Are we doing enough to market newly acquired book titles? Libraries purchase and subscribe to many new book titles each year, both print and electronic. However, we rely on the expectation that users will periodically search our systems to discover newly acquired titles. Static lists and displays have been traditional marketing methods for libraries, but require tedious time and effort to maintain. Without a practical solution for an academic library, East Tennessee State University developed an automated process to generate book widgets utilizing data from Alma Analytics. These widgets are now deployed in our subject guides, website, and on our …

Is Attendance Really Declining At Games?: An Analysis Of Walk-Ins Versus Web Counts, Travis Clamon, Richard L. Wallace
Travis Clamon
Objectives: The purpose is to see if there is a relationship between declining walk-in visitor counts and increased library web access. The overall objective is to evaluate library services and find better and more efficient ways to meet the needs of walk-in and virtual patrons. Methods: Compile past five years of walk-in visitor statistics from the library. Retrieve past five years of website statistics from Google Analytics. These two sets of data will be compared and analyzed for any correlation. We hypothesize the data will show a steady decrease in walk-in visitors along with a continued increase in website visitors. …
Creating An E-Textbook Collection At An Online University Library, Jennifer Howard
Creating An E-Textbook Collection At An Online University Library, Jennifer Howard
OVGTSL 2019
In response to the textbook affordability problem, multiple institutions have implemented or expanded on-campus textbook reserve programs, in order to provide no-cost access for students. For a library at an online university, an e-textbook collection can fulfill the same purpose.
In 2018, our library discussed and implemented a program to purchase and make available e-textbooks for our students. Challenges included availability of titles, simultaneous user restrictions, integration with existing e-reserves, and advertising the service to ensure faculty and student awareness. Beginning Fall term 2018, we were able to provide at least one textbook for over 50% of courses.

Little Fish In A Big Pond : A Kentucky Public Library Joins Naco, Victoria Greenwell, Kristin Anderson, Robert Collins
Little Fish In A Big Pond : A Kentucky Public Library Joins Naco, Victoria Greenwell, Kristin Anderson, Robert Collins
OVGTSL 2019
Many public libraries undervalue the need for good authority control and since NACO has vastly more academic libraries than public libraries, many of our authority needs may be going unanswered. Our library catalog alone has tens of thousands of local authorities that need to be created. How many does yours have?
This presentation will cover the reasons this library chose to join NACO, as well as its long and error-filled path to get its application approved, a story that is humorous in its coincidence, misunderstandings and just sheer, dumb luck. We will also touch on the extensive training involved and …
No Room At The Inn: How We Dealt With Reallocation Of Library Spaces, Amy Butler, Darlene Townsend
No Room At The Inn: How We Dealt With Reallocation Of Library Spaces, Amy Butler, Darlene Townsend
OVGTSL 2019
As part of his vision for a more student-oriented campus, in Fall 2017, our new provost began projects to reallocate some of the square footage in the library for classrooms, student services such as the writing center, and a café. To make way for this reallocation, the project also included the closure of the curriculum library housed in another building. These projects coupled with a relatively short time frame created an interesting set of challenges for the library administration and staff, including rethinking collections and work spaces for the library. As leaders in this effort, the presenters will discuss how …
Glocalization In China: An Analysis Of Coca-Cola’S Brand Co-Creation Process With Consumers In China, Yinuo Shi
Glocalization In China: An Analysis Of Coca-Cola’S Brand Co-Creation Process With Consumers In China, Yinuo Shi
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
In contemporary marketing, corporations often work to induce consumers to participate in co-creating their brand value. Consumers, therefore, can be considered marketers, who are then used by marketing managers to create competitive advantage and market opportunities. Through processes of co-creation, companies also obtain valuable information about consumer preferences and values, which, in turn, can lower production costs. This thesis uses Coca-Cola as a case study to explore the ways international companies work to incorporate elements of Chinese culture and employ Chinese social media platforms in their promotional messages and activities in order to encourage Chinese consumers to co-create their brand …

Opening Keynote: Storytelling & Power In Technical Services, Hannah Buckland
OVGTSL 2019
Stories—as well as language and words themselves—articulate value, identifying what is significant about our histories and our relationships. In this way, storytelling is a form of power, a way of organizing the world. Technical services work, in turn, does more than create, locate, or describe; it also contributes to an ongoing story libraries communicate to users, a story about how something came to be, a story about power dynamics, and a story of how something is connected to everything.

The Impact Of Hypermasculinity On Students' Development In Fraternity Organizations, Cristian Mcgough
The Impact Of Hypermasculinity On Students' Development In Fraternity Organizations, Cristian Mcgough
M.A. in Higher Education Leadership: Action Research Projects
The purpose of my study was to explore the concept of hypermasculinity in fraternal organizations and how that may affect students’ personal development during their collegiate years. My research question was, how can I work with fraternity students to understand what contributes to hypermasculinity and provide support that will better promote an inclusive masculine culture? My findings indicate that certain environments in fraternity organizations promote hypermasculinity traits and that students on the executive board of the Interfraternity Council are seeking spaces to have dialogue about their experiences to challenge the norms of fraternity organizations.
A Biocultural Examination Of Health Risk Among New Mexicans Of Spanish-Speaking Descent, Carmen Mosley
A Biocultural Examination Of Health Risk Among New Mexicans Of Spanish-Speaking Descent, Carmen Mosley
Anthropology ETDs
Individuals of Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish (HLS) origin suffer disproportionately from higher poverty rates, less education, less access to health care, and greater risk factors for and prevalence of chronic diseases compared to their White counterparts. How health disparities emerge over the life course remains unclear. Allostatic load (AL) provides an approach in health research that utilizes a life course perspective and multi-system view of cumulative physiological, or health risk. AL is used to identify sociodemographic and biological factors that contribute to racial differences in health risk. However, AL is not widely used to explore causes of poorer health outcomes …

“Never waste your food,” my parents recited again at the dinner table. They continued, “If we had this much food growing up in the Philippines, we’d be so blessed. Please don’t take it for granted.” Throughout my childhood, nearly every family meal consisted of this conversation. My parents seized every opportunity to remind me of their early impoverished life in the Philippines. Their stories increasingly strengthened my gratitude for the life my brother and I were born into. Having back aches from stiff bamboo beds, depending on conveniently-priced junk food as nutrition, and rationing small portions among large families—these circumstances …
Addressing Homelessness Through Religion, Brian Nguyen
Addressing Homelessness Through Religion, Brian Nguyen
Service-Learning | Student Scholarship
Every time I pass by a man in the street holding up a piece of cardboard saying “Homeless, Will Work for Food”, a little girl standing next to her mother by the side of the road begging for money, or families sleeping in tents underneath bridges on vacant industrial property or by shopping malls, it makes me question why the US is able to spend billions to help poor countries in the world but hasn't solved its own problems. Reading Forbes magazine that ranked the 100 largest US charities in 2018, I am surprised to see many US charities such …
I Feel Like That One Complementizer Is Not Enough, Aidan Kaplan
I Feel Like That One Complementizer Is Not Enough, Aidan Kaplan
Yale Working Papers in Grammatical Diversity
This study presents a description and analysis of an instance of syntactic microvariation, which I call the like that construction. In this construction, an embedded CP is apparently introduced by two complementizers or complementizer-like elements, as in I feel like that we’re going to win the game. This construction is found to be acceptable to speakers from all over the US, with no apparent geographic constraints, while it is also unacceptable to many speakers. Using judgments from a consultant who accepts this construction as well as examples drawn from the Internet, I show that the syntactic properties of like …
A Latent Class Analysis Of The Relationship Between Identity Development And Protestant Fundamentalism, Karin Bartoszuk, James E. Deal
A Latent Class Analysis Of The Relationship Between Identity Development And Protestant Fundamentalism, Karin Bartoszuk, James E. Deal
ETSU Faculty Works
Latent Class Analysis was used to explore different subgroups of individuals based on identity processes (using the DIDS) and protestant fundamentalism. Results indicate that a 6-group solution provided the best fit for our data. The six groups differed in terms of identity process variables (especially exploration in breath, exploration in depth, and identification with commitment), but only modestly in terms of fundamentalism.
