Perceived Ability To Regulate Love, Kruti Surti, Sandra Langeslag
Perceived Ability To Regulate Love, Kruti Surti, Sandra Langeslag
Psychology Faculty Works
Research has shown that romantic love can be regulated. We investigated perceptions about love regulation, because these perceptions may impact mental health and influence love regulation application. Two-hundred eighty-six participants completed a series of items online via Qualtrics that assessed perceived ability to up- and down-regulate, exaggerate and suppress the expression of, and start and stop different love types. We also tested individual differences in perceived love regulation ability. Participants thought that they could up- but not down-regulate love in general and that they could up-regulate love in general more than down-regulate it. Participants thought that they could up-regulate infatuation …

How To Help People Float, Andrea Andrews
How To Help People Float, Andrea Andrews
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
This manuscript examines how to help more people learn to float because this skill is taking a much more central role in the latest drowning prevention advice in the UK. In 2017 BBC Radio Two show presenter, Simon Mayo, declared that he ‘could not float.’ Many persons in the UK identified with this claim. Despite having been an activity in many traditional swimming lessons floating is not a straight-forward skill for all to master. It requires a high degree of personal trust to have developed in the water. I discuss what learning to float fundamentally entails based on recent publications …

Librarian Posters and Presentations
There has been a steady decline in the number of reference questions asked at central reference desks at academic libraries across the United States. The reference desk at the University of North Dakota’s main library has also seen a steady decline in reference questions. In an effort to make better use of professional librarians’ time and energy, library staff are starting a pilot program in Fall 2019 to use undergraduate peer research consultants (PRC’s) to staff the reference desk, thereby freeing up the reference librarians to do more library instruction and outreach. The PRC’s will be undergraduate students trained in …
Multiple Contacts Of Drug Contaminated Fingermarks And Their Analysis With Raman Microspectroscopy, Victoria Deprimo
Multiple Contacts Of Drug Contaminated Fingermarks And Their Analysis With Raman Microspectroscopy, Victoria Deprimo
Master's Theses
This thesis research aimed to determine if substrate, enhancement technique, and multiple contacts affect the detection and identification of drugs in fingermarks using Raman Spectroscopy. It has the potential to be of great importance in forensic science as fingermarks are one of the most important traces left behind at crime scenes and illicit drugs are a significant criminal justice problem. Thus, being able to associate illicit drugs with a specific fingermark has great potential for forensic science, as it can put the drugs in the hands of a specific individual.
The ridges of fingerprints trap trace amounts of material that …
Strengths So White: Interrogating Strengthsquest Education Through A Critical Whiteness Lens, Nicholas Tapia-Fuselier, Lauren Irwin
Strengths So White: Interrogating Strengthsquest Education Through A Critical Whiteness Lens, Nicholas Tapia-Fuselier, Lauren Irwin
Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs
Many college student leadership programs utilize StrengthsQuest as a tool for individual and group development. Although StrengthsQuest is touted as a universal tool to help all individuals leverage their strengths in varied settings, the authors are critical of both the tool itself and the ways educators utilize StrengthsQuest. This paper employs tenets of critical whiteness theory, including color evasiveness, normalization, and solipsism, to deconstruct StrengthsQuest within the context of leadership education. Additionally, the authors offer possibilities for reimagining StrengthsQuest education in ways that center inclusion and justice. Finally, strategies for critical leadership educators are discussed.

Support Services For Formerly Incarcerated Students, Janelle Brown-Peters
Support Services For Formerly Incarcerated Students, Janelle Brown-Peters
M.A. in Higher Education Leadership: Action Research Projects
The purpose of my study was to improve and/or create support services for formerly incarcerated students at the University of San Diego. I sought to discover first if there were any existing support services available for these students at USD. I also sought to discover what kinds of support services existed at other local colleges and universities in order to compare and contrast with USD. Through 1:1 interviews, surveys, focus groups, and community restorative justice organizations, I learned that USD was one of the only higher education campuses in San Diego not currently providing support services for this population of …
Users' Knowkedge And Social Media Sharing Behaviors, Jianan Hu
Users' Knowkedge And Social Media Sharing Behaviors, Jianan Hu
Theses - ALL
The success of social media marketing tactics is highly dependent on the understanding of social media users' information sharing behaviors. Social media user’s likelihood to share is related to various factors, such as knowledge, belief and personality traits. Survey data from 504 American social media users reveals that users' perceived knowledge about social media marketing tactics positively related to their perceived benefits, which further associated with their likelihood of sharing information on social media. Findings also indicate that users' desire for control partially mediates relationship between users’ knowledge of social media tactics and their likelihood to share information. However, the …
Generalising From Qualitative Research (Gqr): A New Old Approach, John Guenther, Ian Falk
Generalising From Qualitative Research (Gqr): A New Old Approach, John Guenther, Ian Falk
The Qualitative Report
In this paper, the authors debunk a long-held myth that generalisation is primarily the domain of quantitative research. Based on a review of modern and historical approaches to generalisation, they argue that generalisation from qualitative research (GQR) can be achieved, not through a process of self-justification, but through defensible and rigorous research design and methods. The authors go on to consider examples from their own qualitative research work spanning the last 20 years. From these examples they offer mechanisms that qualitative researchers can employ to generalise from their findings. They suggest that generalisation is achieved through a process of generalisation …
Towards An Explication Of The Presence Effects On Information Processing And Persuasion: A Construal Level Framework, Mincheol Shin
Towards An Explication Of The Presence Effects On Information Processing And Persuasion: A Construal Level Framework, Mincheol Shin
Dissertations - ALL
Dissatisfied with the existing theoretical account of the effects of presence on the mode of information processing (i.e., heuristic vs. systematic processing) and how this leads to persuasion in the context of mediated communication, the current study suggests an alternative framework that could provide an efficient and reasonable way of understanding the underlying psychological mechanism of the presence effects on persuasion. Drawing on presence theory, construal level theory, and the dual process model of persuasion, this study proposes a conceptual model that posits construal level as a key variable that mediates the effects of presence on the mode of information …
Predictors Of Elementary-Aged Students’ Writing Fluency Growth In Response To A Performance Feedback Writing Intervention, Alisa Viola Alvis
Predictors Of Elementary-Aged Students’ Writing Fluency Growth In Response To A Performance Feedback Writing Intervention, Alisa Viola Alvis
Dissertations - ALL
Students at all grade levels in the United States are experiencing significant difficulties in the area of written expression (Salahu-Din, Persky, & Miller, 2008; U.S. Department of Education, 2012). Although performance feedback is an effective evidence-based intervention for improving the writing fluency of elementary-aged students, approximately one-third do not exhibit fluency growth (Eckert et al. 2006, 2008). The transcription skill of handwriting is a prerequisite of skilled writing (Berninger et al., 2002) and interventions to improve handwriting have concurrent positive effects on writing fluency (Berninger et al., 1997; Graham et al., 2000). Transcription skills influence the writing fluency of younger …
The Minzu Debate: Policy Subsystem, Knowledge Community, And Academic Discourse In Post-Mao China’S Ethnic Policy-Making, Sinan Chu
Dissertations - ALL
How do intellectual innovations in policy fields occur under authoritarian China? In this study, I answer this question through a political-sociological investigation of the academic policy debates of the People’s Republic of China about its ethnic minority policy (a.k.a. “minzu policy”) in the Post-Mao period. Building off existing literature, I propose a theory of academic policy debates. This theory is predicated upon the political-institutional context of a policy subsystem and the internal dynamics of the knowledge community. My central argument can be summarized as follows: academic policy debates in Post-Mao China vary along two dimensions – the level of academic …

A Study Of The Relationship Between Attorneys And Public Relations Counsel During Times Of Organizational Crisis In The 21st Century, Selin Demir
Theses - ALL
This thesis takes a mixed-method approach to the exploration of the relationship between public relations officials and attorneys during a time of organizational crisis. There has not been a significant amount of literature dedicated to the study of this relationship since the turn of the century, but the nature of business operations has changed significantly since then. The advent of social media and the increase in number of lawsuits filed by consumers against corporations and retailers means that the dynamic between attorneys and public relations professionals have likely changed (Radhakant & Diskin, 2013). Social media has become a large part …
Exploring Creativity: A Multi-Perspective Examination, Caitlin Beach
Exploring Creativity: A Multi-Perspective Examination, Caitlin Beach
Honors Projects
This paper is inspired by the personal nature and fluid definition of creativity. It examines creativity literature in three different areas of study. These include philosophy, psychology and sociology. The main questions used to guide this research include: What is creativity? Where does creativity come from? How can we nurture creativity? Each perspective’s answers to these questions are discussed and then similarities between them are determined. Methods such as heuristics, that an individual can use to enhance their creativity are discussed. Improved creative thought can improve problem solving skills and provide career opportunities, thus improving overall quality of life.

Resilience To Spare: The Resettlement Process Of Black Cuban Migrants In Albuquerque, New Mexico, Suyent Rodriguez Candeaux
Theses - ALL
Using oral history interviews, this study collects and analyzes the narratives of fourteen Black Cuban migrants, residents of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Participants migrated to Albuquerque between 1994 and 2013, and either self-identify or were identified by others, as negro(a) or Afro-descendant. This study rejects notions of assimilation and focuses on the resettlement process and life experience of participants. This thesis uses many words used by participants to describe themselves and their experiences. The study investigates their resettlement process, paying close attention to how they navigate the notions of race and ethnicity in Albuquerque. This research identifies community and language as …
Branding White Saviorism: The Ethics And Irony Of Humanitarian Discourse On Instagram, Elizabeth Smith Cooney-Petro
Branding White Saviorism: The Ethics And Irony Of Humanitarian Discourse On Instagram, Elizabeth Smith Cooney-Petro
Theses - ALL
Humanitarian aid work, service trips, and missionary volunteer opportunities are ingrained in much of Western society. Situated at the intersection of visual culture and rhetorical studies, this thesis uses a postcolonial feminist lens to explore how the online discourse of white saviorism came to be accepted and valorized while making invisible the imperial undertones of humanitarian work, and what strategies or efforts are being made toward disrupting this trend. I look at images and posts by current Peace Corps volunteers on Instagram to explore the performance and ethical substance of today’s humanitarian. Additionally, I examine ironic representations of this discourse …

Patient-Provider Communication In Community Mental Health: How Perceptions Of Engagement In Decision-Making Influence Patient-Perceptions Of Well-Being, Elizabeth R. Stein
Patient-Provider Communication In Community Mental Health: How Perceptions Of Engagement In Decision-Making Influence Patient-Perceptions Of Well-Being, Elizabeth R. Stein
Psychology ETDs
Shared Decision-Making (SDM) is being increasingly advocated for in the fields of physical and mental healthcare as it provides a means for patients and providers to engage in meaningful conversation about treatment decisions. Although there are many reasons for advocating for the implementation of SDM, there is limited information on how SDM impacts patient outcomes throughout treatment and the mechanisms through which these effects occur, and this information is even more limited in the area of mental health. The current research used secondary data analyses to examine patient and provider perspectives on the occurrence of SDM and patient engagement in …
“What’S With What’S Her Name? Siri, Call So And So… Can’T You Use Your Own Hands!?” Older Adult Perspectives On The Roles Communication Technology And Physical Activity Play In Their Aging Experiences, Andrew J. West
Communication ETDs
Information and resources are needed to promote quality of life and access to health resources for older adults. Physical activity is an effective health prevention strategy that can help increase older adult life satisfaction and maintain functional ability. Communication technologies like the Internet and smartphone are also useful tools that provide older adults needed resources to stay educated and engaged in healthy aging. This study investigated older adult perceptions of aging, communication technology, and physical activity for older adults. Literature on theories of aging, physical activity strategies, behavior change, and technology use was gathered to understand how these concepts contribute …

Information And Communication Technology Facilities Use As Correlates Of Quality Library Service In First Generation Universities, Southwest, Nigeria, Rasaq Oyekanmi Oyewo, Samuel Shina Akintonde, Idris Tunde Salau
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Information and communication technology (ICT) use studies in libraries are often approached by generalising the ICT facilities without categorisation, however, not all ICT facilities are available, accessible and used in libraries. In the case of libraries where they are available, the dearth of literature exists as to the contribution of each category to the overall perceived benefits of the ICT to library services. Based on the categorisation by Gama (2007), this study was carried out to determine the influence of ICT facilities viz; computing facilities, film/tape-based facilities, reproduction facilities, telecommunication facilities and broadcasting facilities on perceived benefits to library services …
