Brewing Progress: An Exploration Of The Historical Evolution, Economic Impact, And Globalization Dynamics Of Coffee In Colombia, Sophia Elenson

Senior Projects Spring 2024

This research paper delves into the multifaceted history of coffee in Colombia, tracing its origins from the Spanish Conquistadors' arrival in 1499 to its present-day significance. Through a comprehensive analysis, the chapter unfolds the intricate interplay of historical events, cultural influences, and economic shifts that have shaped Colombia into the world's third-largest exporter of coffee. The paper analyses coffee growing in Colombia as a subset of the globalization debate that took place in the 1980s and 1990s. It highlights how the globalization debate influenced events in Colombia’s coffee industry. Important aspects and concepts of the globalization debate such as deregulation, …

Media Sanctions Narratives Two Years Into The Full-Scale Invasion Of Ukraine, Benjamin Raham Fatakhov Jan 2024

Media Sanctions Narratives Two Years Into The Full-Scale Invasion Of Ukraine, Benjamin Raham Fatakhov

Senior Projects Spring 2024

Economic sanctions are tools of pressure that utilize the financial leverage that the sanctioning entity has over the sanctioned entity, which has been used for centuries. In an increasingly globalized environment, countries share international platforms controlled by national and global financial institutions to conduct financial transactions, trade, and maintain complex supply chains. A country can use its financial, legal, and physical infrastructures to inflict economic damage on the target entity in reaction to a target committing some offense in the eyes of the sanctioning country. After the annexation of Crimea and the beginning of the Donbas conflict, much of the …

More Than A Feeling: Exploring The Drivers Of Music Catalog Values, Emily Nutting

CMC Senior Theses

This paper examines which characteristics of songs affect transaction price in the sale of artist’s music catalogs. My analysis tests many variables, including the number of years between the song’s release its catalog’s sale (age); the natural log of the number of Spotify streams the song has (popularity); the genre of the song; themes in the song, such as dating, violence, romance, obscenity, sadness, and feelings; and elements of the song like danceability, energy, loudness, instrumentalness (the prevalence of instrumentals relative to vocals in a song), and acousticness (the measure of sound made using instruments as opposed to electronic means). …

Capturing Value In Emerging Markets: A Real Options Perspective On Resilience And Risk, Alexander Castillo Jan 2024

Capturing Value In Emerging Markets: A Real Options Perspective On Resilience And Risk, Alexander Castillo

CMC Senior Theses

This paper examines the evaluation of investment opportunities in emerging markets (EMs) through real options analysis, against the backdrop of their unique risk profiles and the recent trend of EMs exhibiting resilience in economic performance. While EMs are associated with high growth rates and infrastructure gaps, they have shown adaptability, particularly in monetary policy responses to inflation. This paper explores the sensitivity of net present value (NPV) and real options (RO) to changes in the capital asset pricing model, adapting the yield spread to capture default risk and local risk-free rates. Utilizing oil benchmark price data, the paper constructs a …

Does The Constitution Follow The Flag? The Paradox Of Puerto Rican Identity And Citizenship, Laura Somoza Velez Jan 2024

Does The Constitution Follow The Flag? The Paradox Of Puerto Rican Identity And Citizenship, Laura Somoza Velez

CMC Senior Theses

How do identity and citizenship interact? Puerto Rico’s current political status is that of an unincorporated, organized territory of the United States, under the shiny title of ‘Commonwealth.’ Although they have US Citizenship, Puerto Rican residents aren’t protected by the US Constitution. This source of dual identification, American and Puerto Rican, creates a unique circumstance where questions of identity, and belonging naturally arise. In this thesis, I aim to answer how the citizenship condition created in Puerto Rico and how it is experienced measure up to current debates and scholarship surrounding citizenship. Achieved through a historical analysis of the formation …

China’S Strategic Calculus: A Comparative Analysis Of China’S Approaches Towards The Philippines And Vietnam In The South China Sea Dispute, Letian Wang Jan 2024

China’S Strategic Calculus: A Comparative Analysis Of China’S Approaches Towards The Philippines And Vietnam In The South China Sea Dispute, Letian Wang

CMC Senior Theses

The South China Sea (SCS) dispute is a longstanding territorial conflict involving several surrounding states. In this paper, I analyze the differences in China’s policies towards the Philippines and Vietnam as China exerts its expansion into the SCS using relevant International Relations theories. The Philippines’ democratic values, alliance with the U.S., small-scale volume of trade with China, and active strategies against China all contradict China’s interests to be the regional hegemonic power. In contrast, Vietnam’s socialist regime, alliance with China, substantial trade with China, and passive strategies do not contradict China’s interests as much and even comply with them. Hence, …

The Effect Of Tommy John Surgery On Mlb Starting Pitcher Performance, 2017-2023, Jake Tracey

CMC Senior Theses

This thesis investigates the effect of Tommy John surgery on MLB starting pitcher performance for the 2017-2023 MLB seasons. The paper uses data from the sources Statcast (BaseballSavant.mlb.com) and BaseballReference.com, focusing on various conventional and advanced performance statistics for MLB starting pitchers as well as their salary. Using the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression model, the thesis measures the significance of the dummy variable Tommy John surgery on various pitching statistics to see how the surgery affects performance for MLB starting pitchers. The regressions measure the effect of Tommy John surgery on a pitchers era, wins, weighted on base average …

Speaking To Maryland’S Eastern Shore: Lessons For Candidates Looking To Earn The Watermen Vote, Maryum Khwaja Jan 2024

Speaking To Maryland’S Eastern Shore: Lessons For Candidates Looking To Earn The Watermen Vote, Maryum Khwaja

CMC Senior Theses

One of the thirteen original states, Maryland is located on the East Coast. It consists of two main sections that are separated by the Chesapeake Bay: the Eastern Shore, which is east of the Chesapeake, and mainland Maryland, west of the Chesapeake. As a whole, Maryland is a blue state. The East Shore is different: it has Republican House member, Andy Harris, and holds different values from the rest of the state, and it votes differently, too. In the 2020 election, Biden won the statewide vote 65-32 percent – but Trump carried Harris’s district 56-42 percent.

The people of the …

From The Barrel To The Border: Exploring The Roots And Ramifications Of Gun Trafficking From The United States To Mexico, Alexandra Punishill Jan 2024

From The Barrel To The Border: Exploring The Roots And Ramifications Of Gun Trafficking From The United States To Mexico, Alexandra Punishill

CMC Senior Theses

Nowhere is the discussion surrounding gun violence more prominent than in the United States, with the impacts of our gun-friendly culture being felt around the world. This thesis analyzes the dynamics of gun trafficking from the United States to Mexico and sheds light on its role in fueling the epidemic of gun violence south of the border. It is argued that the particular system of federalism adopted by the United States has led to a variety of state-level gun regulations that have shaped domestic gun policy and have had an international impact. Despite Mexico’s persistent efforts to combat the gun …

Architects Of War: The Economic And Industrial Strategies Of The Third Reich And United States Under Albert Speer And William Knudsen, Spencer David Taylor Jan 2024

Architects Of War: The Economic And Industrial Strategies Of The Third Reich And United States Under Albert Speer And William Knudsen, Spencer David Taylor

CMC Senior Theses

This thesis presents a chronological narrative that delves into the economic and industrial underpinnings of the Second World War, focusing on the contrasting war machines of Germany and the United States. By examining the strategic decisions and outcomes shaped by two central figures, Albert Speer of Germany and William S. Knudsen of the United States, this study highlights how their approaches to war production profoundly influenced the overall trajectory and outcome of the war. Knudsen’s embodiment of the American industrial spirit and Speer’s manipulation of Germany's constrained resources illustrate the crucial roles that economic strategies played alongside military operations. The …

The Role Of Women’S Activists And Organizations In Post-Conflict Kosovo, Olivia Carusi Jan 2024

The Role Of Women’S Activists And Organizations In Post-Conflict Kosovo, Olivia Carusi

CMC Senior Theses

This thesis examines the role of civic organizations to advance women’s rights in Kosovo after the conflict in the late 1990s. Following the Kosovo-Serbia War, Western state building missions came into Kosovo to support Kosovo’s independence and help guide them on a path toward developed statehood. However, those missions brought with them patriarchal leaders who marginalized women’s voices and neglected to enshrine women’s rights. As a result, local actorsand organizations stepped up to improve the lives of Kosovar women. Kosovo Women’s Network (KWN), and their member organizations, is one of the most successful civic actors in Kosovo, working locally and …

Multipolar Melting Pot: A Spatial Analysis Of Political Orientation In The United States, Nathanael Baumann Jan 2024

Multipolar Melting Pot: A Spatial Analysis Of Political Orientation In The United States, Nathanael Baumann

CMC Senior Theses

Politics at the national level seems increasingly polarized – but what does polarization really mean in a political context? Is the American political landscape so unidimensional that voters throughout the country can be represented by a linear left-right spectrum? By classifying gubernatorial candidates across the country based on their distinct social and economic positions, then mapping them in a two-dimensional space, I posit a very different kind of political landscape – one made up of diffuse, fluid political preferences.

How Do Pay Transparency Laws Impact The Gender Pay Gap In The United States?, Kendall Chapko Jan 2024

How Do Pay Transparency Laws Impact The Gender Pay Gap In The United States?, Kendall Chapko

CMC Senior Theses

After much progress during the late 1900s, the gender pay gap has hardly closed in the last two decades. As policy makers look for new solutions, many governing bodies have turned to pay transparency laws, which make employee salaries transparent to employees. There have been several international studies on this topic, and almost all found that these laws are very effective in decreasing the pay gap. This research is extremely important, as it suggests that these policies push us further towards equality, and makes gender based discrimination less common in the workplace. In my study, I conduct a difference in …

Serving With Pride: Analyzing Lgbtq+ Personnel Policy In The U.S. Military, Sonja Woolley Jan 2024

Serving With Pride: Analyzing Lgbtq+ Personnel Policy In The U.S. Military, Sonja Woolley

CMC Senior Theses

This thesis examines the evolution of LGBTQ+ personnel policies in the U.S. military, analyzing how these changes reflect broader social transformations and the military’s role as both a mirror and catalyst in societal shifts. It traces the historical roots of discriminatory practices against queer and transgender servicemembers, identifying key periods of reform and resistance. Using institutional theory to dissect the mechanisms of policy adaptation, this paper focuses on coercive, mimetic, and normative isomorphism, which illustrate the complex interplay between external societal pressures, internal demands for legitimacy, and the professionalization of the military. Through detailed case studies, the thesis highlights how …

The Efficacy Of Insider Trading Regulation: An Analysis Of The 1942 Introduction Of Sec Rule 10b-5, Kamila Melikova, Eric Hughson Jan 2024

The Efficacy Of Insider Trading Regulation: An Analysis Of The 1942 Introduction Of Sec Rule 10b-5, Kamila Melikova, Eric Hughson

CMC Senior Theses

Existing research has thoroughly examined the impact of insider trading regulations, finding mixed results regarding the effectiveness of new law introductions. Although this topic has received considerable attention, there is still a notable lack of research on the first regulation of insider trading: the 1942 introduction of Section 10(b), an amendment to the Securities Exchange Act of 1934. This paper uses a newly compiled dataset of earnings announcements from large public companies between 1937 and 1946, combined with event study methodology, to investigate the effectiveness of the very first ban on insider trading. Through the application of t-tests and regression …

Effects Of Priming Independent And Interdependent Self-Construals On Personal And Collective Future Thought, Claire Hou Jan 2024

Effects Of Priming Independent And Interdependent Self-Construals On Personal And Collective Future Thought, Claire Hou

CMC Senior Theses

Personal and collective future thought refer to the way people conceptualize and think about their own personal futures, and the futures of groups they are affiliated with, such as one’s nation or cultural community, respectively. Previous research has indicated that there are key cultural differences in how American and Chinese individuals think about their personal future and the collective future of their nation. The present study investigated the impact of cultural constructs of self-construal, namely individualism/independence and collectivism/interdependence, on personal and collective future thought. We attempted to experimentally manipulate participants’ self-construals with a priming task, and participants were asked to …

The Politics Of Criminalization: Examining The Complex Legacy Of The 1994 Violence Against Women Act, Genevieve Mccloy Jan 2024

The Politics Of Criminalization: Examining The Complex Legacy Of The 1994 Violence Against Women Act, Genevieve Mccloy

CMC Senior Theses

This thesis explores the interconnected issues of violence against women, patriarchy, and criminalization to understand the 1994 Violence Against Women Act and the factors that shaped it. Using Johns Kingond’s multiple streams framework, this paper investigates how the Act was constructed by the battered women’s movement and the United States’ shift towards tough-on-crime policies. Ultimately, this paper seeks to understand how the issue of domestic violence became rooted in criminalization and if that framework has helped deter violence against women in the United States or if it caused more problems than it solved.

Shifting Landscapes: The Effects Of Gentrification On Homelessness In Los Angeles County, Hannah Huining Deng Jan 2024

Shifting Landscapes: The Effects Of Gentrification On Homelessness In Los Angeles County, Hannah Huining Deng

CMC Senior Theses

Gentrification, characterized by the influx of young professionals into low-income neighborhoods, is reshaping communities across the US. This study investigates how gentrification impacts homelessness rates through the mechanisms of median housing values and educational attainment. Using a longitudinal design, data was gathered on census tracts and service planning areas located within Los Angeles County spanning 7 years (2011, 2013, and 2015 to 2019). Census tract data was categorized into gentrifiable and nongentrifiable subgroups to establish a more discernible cause-and-effect relationship. As hypothesized, the study results show that gentrification is associated with increased rates of homelessness through increased bachelor’s degree attainment. …

Exploring The Factors That Influence Female Offending In The U.S. And Mexico, Dana Villasenor Jan 2024

Exploring The Factors That Influence Female Offending In The U.S. And Mexico, Dana Villasenor

CMC Senior Theses

Hollywood has painted a picture of the criminal woman as a sexy, sneaky, and often psychotic female fatale. This is because men run Hollywood. Much like movies, research on why women offend had historically focused on men as their stellar. However, towards the turn of the century and with the disproportionate rise in female incarceration, literature caught up to the fact that women and men do not experience the same socialization, standards, or reality and, therefore, have different reasons for and ways of offending. This research explores those reasons for women in the U.S. and Mexico and paints the picture …

The Fast-Food Industry's Mental, Emotional, And Physical Adverse Health Effects On Latine Workers, Ricardo Aguilar

CMC Senior Theses

This thesis investigates the adverse health effects experienced by Latine frontline workers in the fast-food industry, a sector where these workers are disproportionately affected by both physical and psychological challenges. The research was driven by the urgent need to address the health disparities that result from employment in environments characterized by high stress, negative customer interactions, and demanding physical activities. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach that includes historical analysis and quantitative assessment of workplace conditions, this study focuses on the common physical injuries such as repetitive motion disorders, and psychological stresses leading to conditions like depression. The results indicate a high …

Health Politics, Covid-19, And The Vaccine: A Comparison Of How Germany And The U.S. Cultivated Public Trust During The Covid-19 Pandemic., Kai Gundlach

CMC Senior Theses

Public trust is important during an ongoing crisis as it determines people’s compliance with government mandates and laws. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Germany and the U.S. operated with different levels of public trust and people placed their trust in different public institutions. My thesis examines how political tactics such as fear, use of science, and expert pronouncements impacted public trust and the COVID-19 response in both countries.

Intersectionality Of Race And Sex On Collaborative Work Process, Wynter Buckner Jan 2024

Intersectionality Of Race And Sex On Collaborative Work Process, Wynter Buckner

CMC Senior Theses

While many researchers have explored the benefits of diversity on innovation and output quality, there is a lack of research that has been done on impact of diversity in teams on outcomes on the personal level. This paper investigates the relationship between social identity and the ease of collaborative work processes. I use an experiment to test hypotheses on the preference of partners and best performing pairing. With the use of a website designed my Jeffery Flory, Brent Hickman, John A. Rational Economic Man As Bourgeois Ideology: A Critique Of The Ways Subjugation Is Reproduced, Sarah Seager Jan 2024

Rational Economic Man As Bourgeois Ideology: A Critique Of The Ways Subjugation Is Reproduced, Sarah Seager

Senior Projects Spring 2024

This project investigates the ways the Rational Economic Man reproduces bourgeois class and ideology. Each of the systems that participate in this reproduction are interconnected and deeply rely on each other to maintain a hierarchy of power and access. Economics as discipline, the state, family as an economic unit, and the healthcare system are all self-serving mechanisms that reproduce subjugation and benefit those already in power.

"Nous Sommes Enfants Avant Migrants" | "We Are Children Before Immigrants" The Making And Unmaking Of The Child Migrant Through Age Assessments In France, Hannah Wynters-Wright Jan 2024

"Nous Sommes Enfants Avant Migrants" | "We Are Children Before Immigrants" The Making And Unmaking Of The Child Migrant Through Age Assessments In France, Hannah Wynters-Wright

Senior Projects Spring 2024

Amidst an increasingly restrictive immigration landscape, this research is focused on the practice of age assessments conducted on unaccompanied migrant minors in France. Despite the rise in international legislation safeguarding the rights of children, irrespective of citizenship status, France lacks a unified strategy for their protection. Instead, dozens of local government offices (called départements) carry out highly subjective age assessments to determine whether an unaccompanied migrant minor qualifies for protection. These offices enact a conflicting mandate in which the duty to protect all children is entangled with immigration enforcement practices. Against this backdrop, this research seeks to explore how the …

Maintaining Well-Being Within A Culture Of Ableism: The False Self, Defenses, And The Disability Identity, Nina Therese Bakoyiannis Jan 2024

Maintaining Well-Being Within A Culture Of Ableism: The False Self, Defenses, And The Disability Identity, Nina Therese Bakoyiannis

Selected Full-Text Dissertations 2020-

Disabled individuals face rampant discrimination in the form of ableist microaggressions (Kattari, 2019) and healthcare neglect (Komisar et al., 2005; Power & Bartlett, 2019), yet research on the impact of ableism on well-being is lacking. Watermeyer (2012) posits that disabled people employ necessary defensive strategies to cope with the reality of such oppressive confounds, such as Winnicott’s False Self (1960)—the artificial persona one consciously or unconsciously employs to protect oneself from social rejection. However, in the only study known to the researcher that assesses the role of the False Self within the disability community, Eichengreen & Hoofien (2017) explore discriminatory …
