Russian Development Of New Hypersonic Weapons: Drivers And Implications, Julia L. Diamond
Russian Development Of New Hypersonic Weapons: Drivers And Implications, Julia L. Diamond
Space and Defense
The Treaty between the United States of America and the Russian Federation on Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms (New START) is, at the time of writing, nearing its 5 February, 2021 expiration date. Both the U.S. and Russia have suspended their obligations under the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty. A renewal of New START would be the most logical future step that aids the cause of arms control. This is the option that requires the least political will and therefore might suit the current political climate. Nevertheless, the political relationship between the two countries …

Physical Decline Rates: Men Versus Women, Ray C. Fair
Physical Decline Rates: Men Versus Women, Ray C. Fair
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
This paper uses world records by age in running, swimming, and rowing to estimate a biological frontier of decline rates for both men and women. Decline rates are assumed to be linear in percent terms up to a certain age and then quadratic after that, where the transition age is estimated. For both men and women decline rates are smallest for rowing, followed by swimming and then running.
Decline rates for women are roughly the same as those for men for the short swimming events. They are slightly larger for the longer swimming events and for the rowing events. They …
Improving Interview Skills Through Virtual Reality With Behavior Skills Training For Students With Disabilities, Garrit Dubois
Improving Interview Skills Through Virtual Reality With Behavior Skills Training For Students With Disabilities, Garrit Dubois
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Individuals with disabilities experience lower employment rates compared to the general population, highlighting the need for interventions to enhance their employability. Interview skills are the most crucial skills to develop. Researchers have used behavioral skills training (BST) to improve vocal and non-vocal aspects of interviewee behavior. Additionally, virtual reality (VR) has been used to simulate the interview process and promote generalization of skills across various environments. However, limited research has investigated the use of VR for vocational skills training in students with disabilities, particularly those still enrolled in high school. This study aimed to examine the use of VR combined …

First Approximation Of Population Distributions On The International Space Station, Justin St. P. Walsh, Rao Hamza Ali, Alice C. Gorman, Amir Kanan Kashefi
Art Faculty Articles and Research
This paper presents an analysis of data derived from thousands of publicly available photographs showing life on the International Space Station (ISS) between 2000 and 2020. Our analysis uses crew and locational information from the photographs’ metadata to identify the distribution of different population groups—by gender, nationality, and space agency affiliation—across modules of the ISS, for the first time. Given the significance of the ISS as the most intensively inhabited space habitat to date, an international cooperative initiative involving 26 countries and five space agencies, and one of the most expensive building projects ever undertaken by humans, developing an understanding …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The Internet has significantly influenced every aspect of human life, while the present era is characterized by information evolution. Efforts to measure up with the quest for information become a herculean task with the traditional reference information service. However, the traditional reference service has undergone a massive facelift with the introduction of the Internet. The concept of online reference information service is an expert way of providing for users' information needs through the mediation of a reference librarian. While online reference information service has had a share in innovation, reference librarians are confronted with meeting users' information needs by embracing …

Online News Portrayal During The Covid-19 Health Crisis And Journalism's Role In Misinformation In The U.S., Michou Ducilon
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought a wealth of new information regarding the virus's origin and treatment. Regrettably, the vast amount of online information has resulted in the proliferation of misinformation, as the World Health Organization reported. To investigate whether journalists may have contributed to this problem, a qualitative analysis was conducted on 15 news articles from top-tier media outlets. Using NVivo software, the articles were analyzed to identify linguistic words and visuals that fell into coding categories based on Behrendt's (2008) contextual analysis for evaluating text. Each article was then coded again to identify common themes. During this process, new …

Love is a phenomenon that occurs across the world and affects many aspects of human life, including the choice of, and process of bonding with, a romantic partner. Thus, developing a reliable and valid measure of love experiences is crucial. One of the most popular tools to quantify love is Sternberg’s 45-item Triangular Love Scale (TLS-45), which measures three love components: intimacy, passion, and commitment. However, our literature review reveals that most studies (64%) use a broad variety of shortened versions of the TLS-45. Here, aiming to achieve scientific consensus and improve the reliability, comparability, and generalizability of results across …

Concepts Of Chemical Dependency, Amy Evans
Day of Scholarship
Concepts of Chemical Dependency's 11th edition continues the work of the original author, Harold Doweiko. Dr. Amelia (Amy) Evans revised the 10th and 11th editions, when Doweiko was no longer able to continue his work on this textbook. Used in a variety of undergraduate and graduate departments, the text provides a solid understanding of substance use disorders and covers a variety of relevant topics related to addictions. After introducing the reader to reasons we should all be concerned about substance misuse in society, there is an overview of why individuals may choose to turn to substances and how these substances …

This study explored the lived experiences of Burmese refugee college students’ resettlement and the role that social support plays in that approach. A qualitative study using thematic analysis was conducted by analyzing 32 in-depth individual interviews with Burmese refugee students in higher education. Through an in-depth examination of the lived experiences of Burmese refugee college students’ resettlement, four main themes were identified: challenges of resettlement, resettlement needs, the resources of social support, and resettlement experiences. Refugee students actively cultivated their life and showed aspirations of being successful members of this new environment. Even though they faced many challenges and needs …
The Impact Of Political Polarization On Church Life In The Upper Midwest, Andrew Bramsen
The Impact Of Political Polarization On Church Life In The Upper Midwest, Andrew Bramsen
Day of Scholarship
Political polarization in the USA has been rapidly increasing since the 1990s. During that same time period, demographic data has shown both a growing population of religious “nones” who no longer identify with a faith tradition and a declining influence for churches and church leaders as the political identities of American Christians becomes more and more central to who they are. This presentation explores this dynamic, examining how rising polarization is impacting church life by drawing on twenty-six interviews with upper Midwest pastors that the author conducted during his 2021 sabbatical. Across denominational lines and urban, rural and suburban contexts, …

Participation In The Adoptive Kinship Network Contact: Application For Adoption Competent Family Life Education, Gretchen Miller Wrobel
Participation In The Adoptive Kinship Network Contact: Application For Adoption Competent Family Life Education, Gretchen Miller Wrobel
Day of Scholarship
Family life educators (FLE) provide essential support for many complex family forms. Supporting the complexity unique to adoptive families requires specific understanding of the adoption kinship network (AKN: birth family, the adopted person, and adoptive family network). As adoptive and birth families negotiate contact over the life cycle, the possible relationships within the AKN are numerous. Using data from the Minnesota-Texas Adoption Research Project (MTARP: Grotevant, McRoy, Wrobel, & Ayers-Lopez, 2013), a 30 year longitudinal study of contact in adoptive families, cross-network contact in the AKN at three separate stages of development will be described. Cross-network contact is defined as …
Moral Preferences Of Different College. Majors, Angela Sabates
Moral Preferences Of Different College. Majors, Angela Sabates
Day of Scholarship
Advising college students regarding their choice of major has significant implications for life. Thus far, research on these advising efforts have focused on career interests and personality traits. Given the reality that choosing a major and a career is a multifaceted phenomenon, the current study explored whether differing preferences for specific moral values is also an integral part of that choice. Results of the current study suggest that students from the various categories of majors have significant differences in preferences for moral values, and this should be considered in the advising process.

When Old Management Practices No Longer Work: Creating Psychological Safety In A Remote Workplace, Peggy S. Kendall
Day of Scholarship
When over 28% of all employees in the US report working primarily online, it is not surprising that the old ways of managing people may not be effective in this new virtual workplace. As part of an Edgren Scholarship, Peggy Kendall and Senior Triston Thomas conducted qualitative interviews with online workers to better understand how Psychological Safety is impacted by the virtual workplace. Three challenges to Psychological Safety emerged, including image management, relational uncertainty, and “perceived frenzy”. Recommendations are provided to help managers better understand how to share information, create safe spaces for team work, and engage in intentional interactions.

Does Face Recognition Correlate With Narcissism? A Replication., Sherryse Corrow
Does Face Recognition Correlate With Narcissism? A Replication., Sherryse Corrow
Day of Scholarship
Prosopagnosia is a disorder that affects one's ability to recognize the faces of other people, despite normal vision and memory. A recent study (Giacomin et al., 2022) suggested that face recognition ability is directly correlated with the degree to which someone has narcissistic personality traits (a self-centered and exaggerated sense of self-importance). If this is the case, it may provide clues as to why people with prosopagnosia have such limited ability to recognize others. In this study, we attempted to replicate Giacomin's work using well-validated measures of face recognition ability. This project was led by four Bethel students who presented …

Reimagining Freshmen Library Orientation At The Forde Library, Usc, Anastasia Mulraine-Campbell, Stacyann Quintero
Journal of Adventist Libraries and Archives
Striving “Beyond Excellence” is the motto of the University of the Southern Caribbean, and the Forde Library strives to embody such by constantly reviewing and upgrading the resources and services offered to their community. One of the main drivers of such a review process in the past three years has been the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced many academic libraries to reimagine their service offerings and access points. The Forde Library was no stranger to this, as the pandemic saw a fundamental shift in the delivery mode of Library orientation using technology and conferencing software. This quantitative study focuses on the …

Developing And Validating A Measure Of Transformational Followership, Noelle Baird
Developing And Validating A Measure Of Transformational Followership, Noelle Baird
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Leadership and followership are inherently interdependent, yet research has primarily focused on the unilateral influence of leaders. To advance a more balanced perspective and highlight how followers can positively contribute to the leadership process, I conceptualized and validated a measure of transformational followership. Transformational followership represents leaders’ perceptions of effective followership tendencies that enable productive, generative, and motivating engagements with and for their leader. After conducting a comprehensive literature review of both followership and leadership research, I created an initial item pool which was then subjected to rigorous testing across three distinct phases. Phase 1 leveraged feedback from organizational …

Moving Beyond Transactional Coursework To Enhance Student Success In University Classes, Mark R. Reavis, Kuldeep Singh
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
The goal of teaching is student success, but defining success can be daunting. A rudimentary description of student success involves academic achievement and students’ attainment of a high level of satisfaction with their educational process. The pinnacle of student success is transformational learning. Transformational learning is ultimately evidenced by knowledge-based, responsible, and autonomous thinking. Student engagement enhances student success. As a result, course design and assignment design are critical. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how an online discussion assignment can be used to enhance student engagement and increase student success in a university class. The assignment presented …
