Copyright First Responders: Decentralized Expertise, Cultural Institutions, And Risk, Kyle K. Courtney, Emily Kilcer Oct 2023

Copyright First Responders: Decentralized Expertise, Cultural Institutions, And Risk, Kyle K. Courtney, Emily Kilcer

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

Today librarians and other information professionals regularly intersect with intellectual property law. As our work increasingly encompasses copyright-intensive programs and projects (e.g., digitization, scholarly publishing, open access, streaming media, MOOCs, and more), questions about fair use, public domain, and copyright law invariably emerge. Libraries occupy a liminal space, they both serve knowledge creation and information access and enjoy special privileges under copyright law.

Unfortunately, comprehensive copyright training is still not a pillar of LIS programs,1 and while there are seminal resources to look to and professional development opportunities to explore (e.g., MOOCs, copyright bootcamps, or one-offs at conferences), this sort …

Neurological Disability Perspectives On Sexuality Through Social Media Platforms, Heather Tillewein, Norah Chen, Hana Choi, Margaux Kraemer, Laeek A. Siddiqui

Summer Sexuality Fellowship

ABSTRACT:

As part of the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) Human Sexuality Summer Research Fellowship, the Neurological Disability group collected social media data regarding the intersections of neurological disability and sexuality. For the purpose of the database, neurological disability is determined as self-identified neurological disorders and mental health diseases that can be congenital or acquired, including but not limited to: autism, depression, anxiety, traumatic brain injury, etc. (Wade, 1996). Key terminology for neurological disorders included both a review of literature focusing on biomedicalization of terminology and social justice terminology, as well as a practical review of the efficacy of …

Summer Sexuality Fellowship

The purpose of this data set is to investigate the experiences of parents, children, biological and non-biological family members when families are constructed in non-traditional ways. We address families constructed with known donors, in polyamourous and platonic family formations, families with step parents, and through adoption. Social Media posts between 2018 and 2023 were systematically collected from Reddit, Tiktok, Youtube, and Twitter. Data were collected by a team of collaborative researchers focusing on three topical areas: Donor conception, Adoption, and Mutli-Parent Families.

Fluid Homes: Navigating Gender, Sexuality, And Housing Insecurity Discourses On Social Media, Kristen Dejarlais-Deklerk, Thomas Brooks, Moandra Johnson, Siiri Koski, Emma Rainey, Vivian Swayne

Summer Sexuality Fellowship

Abstract

As part of the Sexuality Summer Research Fellowship organized and facilitated by the California Institute for Integral Studies, this dataset focuses on 2SLGBTQI+ experiences and perceptions of housing insecurity and homelessness. Housing and rental affordability pressures, particularly for low-income earners, have become a pressing issue worldwide, especially as inflation has escalated over the past three years (Barrett, 2022). Much of this can be attributed to the build-up and fallout of the global financial crisis of 2008, where the culmination of stagnant growth in real wages and a sustained reduction in access to social security and welfare provisions has pushed …

Summer Sexuality Fellowship

Abstract

During a ten-week Human Sexuality fellowship program, one of the focal areas was sex work, undertaken by an interdisciplinary team of graduate students and faculty. Employing an emergent design approach, this team used multiple iterations to refine their data collection process. Initially comprised of sixteen fellows, the Sex Work team sought to compile a comprehensive dataset encompassing various aspects of sex work, as broadly defined, across four social media platforms: Reddit, TikTok, Twitter (aka "X"), and YouTube. The Sex Work Databank eventually amassed nearly 6,000 data entries, with YouTube yielding the largest share.

The data collection process began with …

College-Aged Women’S Perceptions On Healthy And Unhealthy Romantic Behaviors And How Reality Tv Influenced Their Views On Relationships: A Qualitative Case Study, Coretta L. Cotton Oct 2023

College-Aged Women’S Perceptions On Healthy And Unhealthy Romantic Behaviors And How Reality Tv Influenced Their Views On Relationships: A Qualitative Case Study, Coretta L. Cotton

Doctor of Education (Ed.D)

Women between the ages of 18-24 experience intimate partner violence at a higher rate than any other group. Physical violence can be easily identified as an unacceptable practice. However, recognizing different aspects of abusive behavior is not as easy to identify. The purpose of the case study was to examine how college-aged women perceive which behaviors were healthy and unhealthy in a romantic relationship and how reality TV influenced their views. The two central themes of the study were healthy relationship behaviors and unhealthy relationship behaviors. The subcategories for healthy relationship behaviors were communication, love, and support. The subcategories for …

In partnership with the City of Gering I was able to get knee deep in the facility planning of the city owned property which is home to the Community Ever Green House. The project reviews how the property is integrated into the community and the impact it has. Then, identifies opportunities to improve overall functionality with a closer look at addressing hazard mitigation using …

Nonprofit Organizations And Arts Education In A Rural Community, Elise Lael Kieffer Oct 2023

Nonprofit Organizations And Arts Education In A Rural Community, Elise Lael Kieffer

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

The connection between public administration and nonprofit administration has been in existence since ancient times, when individual volunteers (the predecessors of a formal nonprofit sector) met humanitarian needs to which the government was unwilling or unable to attend. Addams (1910) formalized this intersecting relationship during her time working in Chicago’s slums with refugees. Pandey & Johnsons (2019) drew connections between public administration, public policy, and nonprofit management. They concluded that discoveries in one of those domains should necessarily be applied to the others. They advised that continued research should draw explicit connections across those sectors and highlighted examples of the …

Recall Me Maybe: The Effects Of Music-Evoked Mood On Recognition Memory, Caroline Grace Coey, Youstina Tadros, Sinead Doogan, Melody Alvarez Oct 2023

Recall Me Maybe: The Effects Of Music-Evoked Mood On Recognition Memory, Caroline Grace Coey, Youstina Tadros, Sinead Doogan, Melody Alvarez

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

The current study aims to further explore the relationship between musically evoked emotional states and recognition capabilities. Previous research has demonstrated emotional congruency between musical stimuli and subsequent task performance (Mitterschiffthaler et al., 2007). The background music’s emotional valence provides additional insight into how to guide the perception of events and how music-evoked emotions can impact memory (Scherer & Zentner, 2001; Hanser et al., 2015). For instance, happy people will have an easier time remembering positive experiences, rather than sad, or negatively valanced ones while those who are sad will better remember negative experiences, rather than happy, or positively valanced …

The Bereaved Songwriters' Project, Laura A. Figueroa

Doctor of Education (Ed.D)

The purpose of this quantitative, quasi-experimental study was to evaluate bereaved individuals’ responses to a reflective songwriting program intervention (RSPI). The purposive and convenient sample included 30 bereaved adults who were members of the teaching staff at a private, Christian, K-12 school in the southeastern United States and/or past or present members of the church with which the school was affiliated. The researcher developed a simple and succinct RSPI in which study participants were prompted to create an original musical piece using personal reflections, memories, and descriptions in song form to commemorate a deceased loved one. The Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being …
