Why The Public Discourse On Education Is Wrong, Jesus Felipe
Why The Public Discourse On Education Is Wrong, Jesus Felipe
Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)
ONCE upon a time, the Philippines was praised for its relatively well-educated labor force. Not anymore. The situation seems to have reversed: policymakers and commentators single out education as one of the primary causes for the country’s poor performance (lack of competitiveness) and the unemployability of many of its workers.
To put the discussion in the correct context, I will start by arguing that the relevant measure of progress for a developing nation like the Philippines is productivity. Without productivity increases, there cannot be increases in income. Productivity in the Philippines is low in general. Is education the key to …
Sleep, Body Dissatisfaction, And Eating Among Adolescents, Megan White
Sleep, Body Dissatisfaction, And Eating Among Adolescents, Megan White
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Sleep difficulties in adolescence have been linked to greater impulsivity, negative affect, propensity to interpret neutral stimuli as negative, and higher rates of anxiety and depressive symptomatology (Van Dyk, 2016). However, minimal research has looked at the relationship among sleep difficulties, emotional eating, and body dissatisfaction within this population. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to explore the relationship among sleep difficulties, emotional eating, and body dissatisfaction among adolescents aged 12-18 years. Specifically, the current study stands to 1) confirm the relationship between emotional eating and body dissatisfaction; 2) test if sleep difficulties are related to emotional eating; …

Learning, Unlearning, And Sprinkling In: Our Journey With Equitable Evaluation, Jane Mosley, Leigh W. Quarles, Jason L. Williams
The Foundation Review
The Health Forward Foundation recently completed a two-year journey with the Equitable Evaluation Initiative as a practicing partner. This partnership provided us with the support to push for change that better aligned with our new focus, prioritizing racial equity and economic advancement.
The partnership also allowed us to explore a number of questions fundamental to our work in learning and evaluation: what we really know about the impact philanthropy is making in our communities; how we can explain that to board members, and how we honor the personal experiences of the people we serve.
In this article we discuss our …

Non-Pharmacological Interventions For Alzheimer’S Disease Patients, Mariam Hanna
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) research often focuses on the pharmacological treatment and neurological basis of the disease. However, in the absence of disease-modifying treatments, interventions that target symptom reduction may improve quality of life and delay institutionalization. Given the limitations and risks associated with pharmacological AD treatments, this paper reviews non-pharmacological interventions to improve memory function and reduce symptoms of depression in patients with AD including music therapies, Cognitive Rehabilitation, and Bright Light Therapy.

Lack Of Women In Federal Level Politics In The United States, Ellie Romans Draper
Lack Of Women In Federal Level Politics In The United States, Ellie Romans Draper
Ballard Brief
Women comprise 50.5% of the United States population, but only 28% of all officeholders in the 2023 US Congress. The scarcity of female role models in politics—caused by societal expectations, inadequate candidate recruitment, and a lack of interest in political leadership —contributes to a shortage of women in politics. Further, the double bind imposes contradictory expectations upon women, affecting their political ambition and others’ perceptions of their competence. As a result, there are policy gaps, especially in areas that affect women and their communities. Women’s underrepresentation also undermines democracy because the government is unable to reflect the interests of the …

From Greens To General Plans: Reinventing Abandoned Golf Courses, Chloe Carolyn Partain
City and Regional Planning
This paper examines three case studies from different areas of the western United States to analyze the challenges and opportunities associated with redeveloping underutilized or abandoned golf courses. By examining how different communities from across the region have approached this process, this study aims to inform city planners, developers, policymakers, and other stakeholders about the intricacies and potential pitfalls of this process. It concludes with a list of necessary considerations for the redevelopment of any golf course and recommends best practices to follow throughout the process of redevelopment.
Evaluating The Benefits Of Mindfulness Based Practices In The Hospital Setting: A Case For Mindful Communication Interventions For Nurses, Annie Kaplon
Mindfulness Studies Theses
Recent stressors, such as COVID-19, have provided new challenges for healthcare workers, especially nurses, and have contributed to the increase in burnout rates in the hospital setting. Therefore, relief in this space is critical. Ample research demonstrates that mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) may help to improve well-being among healthcare providers more broadly. Literature supports that the practice of mindful communication, in particular, is helpful, not only in improving patient outcomes, but also in decreasing interpersonal stress among healthcare workers. This paper analyzes and synthesizes relevant studies, both qualitative and quantitative, and argues that mindful communication training improves the workplace environment for …
A Seat At Whose Table? Analyzing Detroit’S Community Benefit Ordinance As A Tool For Environmental Justice, Sarah Draughn Gargaro
A Seat At Whose Table? Analyzing Detroit’S Community Benefit Ordinance As A Tool For Environmental Justice, Sarah Draughn Gargaro
Michigan Journal of Environmental & Administrative Law
The Environmental Protection Agency defines environmental justice as the “just treatment and meaningful involvement” of all people in the decisionmaking that affects the environment and human health. Since the origins of the modern American environmental justice movement in the 1980s, activists have emphasized the importance of self-determination. Environmental justice requires that decision making processes center the voices of the individuals impacted by decisions made about the distributions of environmental assets and harms. There is a significant challenge, however, in designing community engagement practices that meaningfully involve community members. Since the 1990s, community benefits agreements have been heralded as an effective …

Stabilizing And Empowering Women In Higher Education: Aligning, Centering, And Building, Natasha N. Johnson
CJC Publications
The importance of higher education in today’s world and workforce cannot be overstated. It is well-known that higher education leads to better jobs, higher salaries, and elevated social status. Unfortunately, women have been historically underrepresented in the realm of higher education. In recent years, however, numerous efforts have been made to stabilize and empower women in this arena. As such, this chapter aims to provide an in-depth analysis of these progressive efforts. Stabilizing and empowering women in higher education is essential in promoting gender equality and generational social progress. While substantial gains have been made in recent years, much remains …

A Journey Into Equitable Practice: Doing More, Doing Differently, And Doing Better, Bree Bode, Sarah Panken, Annie Murphy, Marci Scott
The Foundation Review
The mission of the Michigan Fitness Foundation is to encourage and facilitate active lifestyles and healthy food choices through education, environmental awareness, community participation, and policy leadership. The article shares how a three-year engagement with the Equitable Evaluation Initiative led the foundation to see its grantmaking, programming, and evaluation practices anew through an equity lens.
Through naming and noticing the ways in which traditional grantmaking has contributed to the inequities that philanthropy seeks to address, the foundation was able to change its own way of working — specifically by going beyond the standard written grant proposal to actually sit with …

Determinants Of Entrepreneurial Startup: How Do They Differ Between Oil And Non-Oil Exporting Countries And How Have They Changed Over Time, Jeffrey B. Nugent, Runnan Guo, Xinlu Zhao
Topics in Middle Eastern and North African Economies
While there is a long history of studies investigating the effects of oil curse on growth, and links thereto via various institutional characteristics like democracy, susceptibility to corruption and political instability, and macroeconomic policies including exchange rates, only quite rarely have these been extended to effects on entrepreneurship at the individual level. Even among the relatively few studies that have done so, seldom have such studies examined the effects of changes in the relevant variables over time. The purpose of this paper is to examine an even wider range of factors (at both the individual and national levels) affecting entrepreneurial …

Charting Saudi Arabia's Course To Net Zero Emissions: The Crucial Role Of Energy Efficiency, Fateh Belaïd
Topics in Middle Eastern and North African Economies
The evaluation of the role of energy efficiency in addressing climate change is paramount, given the concerns about the ongoing global warming. This study delves into the impact of energy efficiency on carbon intensity within Saudi Arabia’ decarbonization and examines its potential contributions to the nation's ambitious net-zero emissions target. Analyzing a time series of data from 1971 to 2020 and employing a quantile regression model, our findings underscore the critical significance of energy efficiency in mitigating GHG emissions, emphasizing the necessity of harnessing this tool to expedite the decarbonization process. Notably, the model remains robust, even when accounting for …

Poverty And Climate Change In South And East Of Mediterranean , Causes, Consequences Et Perspectives, Alain Safa, Nathalie Hilmi, David Dalmasso, Manal Shehabi
Topics in Middle Eastern and North African Economies
According to the IPCC AR6 report, The global temperature over the past 10 years has warmed 11 degrees more than during the pre-industrial era (1850-1900). Greenhouse gas concentrations were higher in 2019. Climate change is rapid, intensifying, and affecting all regions of the world. If emissions of CO2, methane and other greenhouse gases are not reduced, the goal of limiting the temperature increase to 1.5 degrees will be out of reach. The ice caps continue to melt, and the sea level continues to rise. The negative effects of climate change are an intensification of extreme events such as tropical cyclones, …

The Asymmetric Effects Of External Debt On Economic Growth In Selected Mena Countries: Some Insights From A Panel Quantile Regression, Mahmoud Haddad, Refk Selmi, Shawkat Hammoudeh
Topics in Middle Eastern and North African Economies
The increased level of debt is a major risk for the financial stability and questions the ability of countries to balance fiscal vulnerabilities with development goals. With the rising debt wave and additional pressures induced by the pandemic and the Russian/Ukrainian war on sources of development finance, this study uses a panel quantile regression to re-examine the asymmetric relationship between the external debt and economic growth in six highly indebted MENA countries, namely, Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, and Tunisia over the period 2006-2019. The outcomes support the main hypothesis that high debt reduces economic growth, yet this effect seems …
