Pregnant Black/African Americans' Experiences In Prenatal Genetic Counseling, Latonya Alexander May 2023

Pregnant Black/African Americans' Experiences In Prenatal Genetic Counseling, Latonya Alexander

Dissertations & Theses (Open Access)

Pregnant Black/African American patients have faced systematic racism in the U.S. healthcare system embodied in the high maternal morbidity and mortality rates. Patients have the desire to feel heard and connected with their healthcare providers. Prenatal genetic counselors are not only trained to provide education to individuals, couples, and families who may be seeking genetic counseling, but also to use psychosocial skills with patients. Previous studies with majority of White participants have described how psychosocial skills build patient trust. Therefore, this study aimed to determine what factors made pregnant Black/African American patients feel heard and trustful with their prenatal genetic …

Trust Is Not Enough: Examining The Role Of Distrust In Human-Autonomy Teams, Sydney Begerowski May 2023

Trust Is Not Enough: Examining The Role Of Distrust In Human-Autonomy Teams, Sydney Begerowski

All Theses

As automation solutions in manufacturing grow more accessible, there are consistent calls to augment capabilities of humans through the use of autonomous agents, leading to human-autonomy teams (HATs). Many constructs from the human-human teaming literatures are being studied in the context of HATs, such as affective emergent states. Among these, trust has been demonstrated to play a critical role in both human teams and HATs, particularly when considering the reliability of the agent performance. However, the HAT literature fails to account for the distinction between trust and distrust. Consequently, this study investigates the effects of both trust and distrust in …

Economic Impact Assessment Of Nature-Based Coastal Resilience Solutions In Charleston. Estimating Local Economic Effects With Algorithm-Based Supporting Tool., Oksana Veselkova May 2023

Economic Impact Assessment Of Nature-Based Coastal Resilience Solutions In Charleston. Estimating Local Economic Effects With Algorithm-Based Supporting Tool., Oksana Veselkova

All Theses

Coastal cities are at the forefront of the risks induced by climate change. Local communities are adversely affected, but the essential cultural assets and economies are also at risk of damage or destruction. In the efforts to limit hazard risk exposure, local governments are increasingly planning for long-term flood protection. One prospective flood risk mitigation measure is living shorelines or nature-based adaptation. The coastal ecosystems, such as beaches, wetlands, barrier islands, oyster reefs, and salt marshes, deliver multiple benefits to communities, including recreation, natural resources, freshwater, and carbon sequestration. Moreover, when combined with structural solutions, they can effectively reduce water …

An Economic Perspective On Self-Reported Happiness In Taiwan, Shih Yu Sung May 2023

An Economic Perspective On Self-Reported Happiness In Taiwan, Shih Yu Sung

All Theses

Happiness research has become a topic of interest in recent years. The OECD's "Better Life Index," the U.N.'s "World Happiness Report," and Taiwan's "National Happiness Indicator" are examples of initiatives to understand better and evaluate the well-being of people. After the well-known "Easterlin Paradox" was proposed, more and more economists started researching the economics of happiness. Economists studied the relationship between reported happiness and income and the relationship between reported happiness and socioeconomic factors and demographic factors. In this study, I use data from the Taiwan Social Change Survey of 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, and 2015 to analyze potential factors …

Magic Mirrors, Jamie Ho May 2023

Magic Mirrors, Jamie Ho

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

When a beam of bright light hits the convex and polished surface, an image is reflected back onto the wall. This is a description of a magic mirror, an object from the Han Dynasty (206 BC -24 AD), that embodies how Euro-America views China: both technically advanced and shrouded in mystery. The magic mirror also points to the history of photography, as this term was often used in the Victorian era to describe a camera. The image created by a camera is a mimic of reality, both all too familiar and unfamiliar.[1] Like magic mirrors, the GIFs I create …

Seeking Justice For Jews From Mena Countries Through International Law: Comparing The Cases Of Morocco And Iraq, Jessica E. Yeroshalmi May 2023

Seeking Justice For Jews From Mena Countries Through International Law: Comparing The Cases Of Morocco And Iraq, Jessica E. Yeroshalmi

Student Theses and Dissertations

Little is known of the Jews of Middle Eastern North African (MENA) origin whose long standing history in the region did not protect them from discrimination, persecution, and ethnic cleansing. Although much of the research on contemporary Jewish history and persecution revolves around the Holocaust and European events and its implications for Jews and international law, far less is researched about the uprooting of nearly one million Jews from the MENA region. In this investigation, I aim to reconstruct that narrative, applying international law to Jewish refugees from Arab countries. My thesis will be a comparative analysis of Morocco and …

The Origins Of The Iraq War: The Role Of Anthrax In The Weapons Of Mass Destruction Claims, John P. Koenig May 2023

The Origins Of The Iraq War: The Role Of Anthrax In The Weapons Of Mass Destruction Claims, John P. Koenig

Student Theses and Dissertations

The 2001 Anthrax Attacks were a critical factor in the Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) claims that sparked the Iraq War. Despite its significance, little systematic work has been done regarding the topic. Existing studies primarily focus on the role of the Military Industrial Complex and intelligence failures as the primary explanations for the origins of the Iraq War. These explanations are limited, as they rely on hindsight biases. This thesis contends that anthrax was the catalyst for WMD claims that sparked the Iraq War. The 2001 Anthrax Attacks reinforced the belief that Iraq harbored WMDs and posed a threat …

War In Iraq, 2003-2011: An Exhibit From The Hagel Archives, Lori Schwartz

Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

I’m the Chuck Hagel and Technical Services Archivist at UNO. I manage the Hagel Archives. Hagel was a U.S. senator in 1997-2009 and SecDef in 2013-2015. Lesser known is that he was deputy administrator at the VA in 1981-82.

Topics for which the Hagel Collection has dozens of cubic feet include the War on Terror broadly, wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, economic downtown of 2007-2009, and climate change. The abundance of records in these areas is because Hagel was on Foreign Relations, Banking, and Intelligence.

Peer Review Validation: Tracking Scholarly Activity In A Repository, Amanda Schwartz May 2023

Peer Review Validation: Tracking Scholarly Activity In A Repository, Amanda Schwartz

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Providence’s institutional repository Digital Commons launched in 2018, serving as the enterprise’s scholarly activity repository. After several years of successful repository usage and readership tracking, research administration initiated a new request: peer review tracking. The repository previously tracked number of article submissions but did not assess if content was published in peer reviewed journals. How can we retroactively and proactively track peer reviewed articles on our institutional repository? Simple ask, complicated answer.

Library staff had no previous practices in place to record whether content was peer reviewed or not. The initial request seemed simple, yetbecame increasingly complex to create both …

Nonprofit Marketing And Communication Personnel Job Satisfaction: The Effects Of Role Conflict And Role Ambiguity, Rachel L. Swink May 2023

Nonprofit Marketing And Communication Personnel Job Satisfaction: The Effects Of Role Conflict And Role Ambiguity, Rachel L. Swink

Communication Theses

Job satisfaction is becoming increasingly important in efforts to retain employees across all sectors. The nonprofit sector is facing greater challenges than ever before in competing for and retaining adequate talent. The nonprofit sector provides unconventional benefits such as hybrid office models, paid time off, and others to improve job satisfaction. While nonprofits receive high job satisfaction, turnover is a big issue, even among marketing and communication teams which are often underfunded, understaffed, and unappreciated. Marketing and communication teams play a unique role within nonprofits, as they are frequently pulled in different directions to accomplish tasks that may not necessarily …

Examining The Role Of Pretrial Detention On The Juvenile Plea Process, Isabelle May Clough May 2023

Examining The Role Of Pretrial Detention On The Juvenile Plea Process, Isabelle May Clough

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Plea bargains are a necessary part of the criminal justice system as a whole, and the juvenile justice system more specifically. However, juveniles may be at a particular disadvantage when entering into a plea bargain as a result of their developmental capacities. Pretrial detention in particular might influence the quality of the final plea agreement that a juvenile accepts, as adolescents would be motivated towards the short-term goal of being released from detention. The current study aimed to examine the relationship between juvenile pretrial detention and plea discounts through mediating relationships with number of attorneys and time to plea. Data …

A Scoping Review Of The Impact Of Solitary Confinement On Self-Harm And Suicide Among Adults In U.S. Prisons, Jessica Diana Puebla May 2023

A Scoping Review Of The Impact Of Solitary Confinement On Self-Harm And Suicide Among Adults In U.S. Prisons, Jessica Diana Puebla

Social Work Theses

Solitary confinement is a widespread issue that impacts the most vulnerable individuals in our country. The U.S. uses solitary confinement more frequently and for longer periods of time compared to other countries though its use has not proven to be an effective intervention in prisons. Solitary confinement limits the individual’s ability to connect with peers, friends, and family as visits are restricted, thus impacting their mental health. This thesis aimed to understand the impact of solitary confinement of self-harm and suicide among adults in U.S. prisons; This thesis also attempted to shed light on the theoretical lenses that were stated …

Great Expectations: Anticipating A Reminder Influences Prospective Memory Encoding And Unaided Retrieval, Philip Peper May 2023

Great Expectations: Anticipating A Reminder Influences Prospective Memory Encoding And Unaided Retrieval, Philip Peper

Psychology Dissertations

Reminders are effective ways to improve prospective memory (PM) – our ability to remember to complete a future action – but reminder use may have unintended consequences. Recent work in retrospective memory has shown that expecting a reminder reduces unaided memory retrieval by reducing encoding effort (i.e., encoding effort hypothesis). However, previous research in PM varies as to whether encoding effort influences PM retrieval. We measured study duration (Experiment 1) and pupil size (Experiment 2), and manipulated depth of processing (Experiment 3) at encoding to examine whether encoding effort influences PM retrieval (i.e., encoding effort hypothesis). Across all experiments, we …

Self-Compassion And Online Student Connectedness As Protective Factors Against Stress And Loneliness In Emerging Adulthood, Abigail Caroline Heller May 2023

Self-Compassion And Online Student Connectedness As Protective Factors Against Stress And Loneliness In Emerging Adulthood, Abigail Caroline Heller

Psychology Dissertations

The current state of US youth and emerging adult mental health is described as a crisis that the COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated (US Office of the Surgeon General, 2021). This dissertation examined whether daily hassles and COVID-19 pandemic-related stress were related to negative psychological and physical health outcomes in emerging adulthood. Additionally, the current study aimed to examine loneliness as a mediator of the relationship between stressors and physical and psychological outcomes in adolescents. More importantly, this study examined the protective roles of self-compassion (i.e., how emerging adults treat themselves during hard times; Neff, 2003) and online student connectedness …

La Pieza Que Falta: How Gender Roles And Cultural Norms Impacted How Latinas Learn About Sex, Toni A. Gallegos May 2023

La Pieza Que Falta: How Gender Roles And Cultural Norms Impacted How Latinas Learn About Sex, Toni A. Gallegos

Social Work Theses

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to increase knowledge around what Latinas learned about sex growing up. It was used to create foundational work for future research with this population. More importantly it is a means for members of the community to speak about their lived experiences surrounding sex education, gender roles, and growing up in their households. Methods: This study used a mixed methods design due to the limited amount of research that is focused on sex education and Latinas. It was used to collect a wide range of data that could be used to help with future …

The Influence Of Organizational Tightness-Looseness, Self-Monitoring, And Performance Standards On Creativity, Sampoorna Nandi May 2023

The Influence Of Organizational Tightness-Looseness, Self-Monitoring, And Performance Standards On Creativity, Sampoorna Nandi

Psychology Theses

My research study seeks to experimentally investigate the main effect of cultural tightness-looseness within organizations on employees’ creative performance in terms of the criteria of the specific creative process (idea generation versus evaluation). Specifically, I hypothesized that employees in tight (versus loose) organizational cultures will be better at generating more useful (versus original) ideas. Furthermore, employees in tight (versus loose) organizational cultures were hypothesized to be stronger at idea evaluation (marked by number, depth, specificity, and usefulness) and employees in loose (versus tight) organizational cultures are expected to be stronger at idea generation (marked by fluency, originality, and quality). Furthermore, …

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Social media has become one of the primary modes of communication in recent times, with popular platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram leading the way. Despite its popularity, Instagram has not received as much attention in academic research compared to Facebook and Twitter, and its significant role in contemporary society is often overlooked. Web archives are making efforts to preserve social media content despite the challenges posed by the dynamic nature of these sites. The goal of our research is to facilitate the easy discovery of archived copies, or mementos, of all posts belonging to a specific Instagram account …

Using Path Modeling To Investigate The Impact Of Adverse Childhood Experiences On Post-Traumatic Growth Through Meaning-Making, Resilience, And Ptsd Symptoms, Sowmya Kshtriya

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Background: Research has revealed an important relationship between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and post-traumatic growth (PTG) through direct and indirect processes, involving three probable mediators, meaning-making, resilience, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. However, little is known about how these processes work together to shape PTG.

Aim: The current study examines the relationship between cumulative ACEs and PTG through meaning-making, resilience, and PTSD symptoms, in a comprehensive dynamic framework model using path modeling.

Method: A sample of 759 undergraduate psychology students (ages 18+) completed self- report measures through a 30-minute online survey that assessed their levels of ACEs, PTG, meaning-making, …

The Role Of Presentation Media And Perspective On Direction Giving, Rebeca Costa Do Nascimento May 2023

The Role Of Presentation Media And Perspective On Direction Giving, Rebeca Costa Do Nascimento

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Research on spatial cognition has tried to understand how perspective (route vs. survey) and media (visual vs. verbal) influence people's spatial cognition on different tasks (e.g., map drawing, navigation, semantic and distance estimation) when materials are presented simultaneously. However, less research has focused on how those spatial features influence people's direction giving when materials are presented sequentially, one piece at a time. In the present study, participants were presented with fragments of sentences and map segments. After learning the materials, they were asked to give directions using their own words or including cardinal terms. As hypothesized, participants provided more accurate …

Investigating Spinal Cord Injury At Different Locations On The Spinal Cord Using Diffusion Tensor Imaging, Haley Nauman May 2023

Investigating Spinal Cord Injury At Different Locations On The Spinal Cord Using Diffusion Tensor Imaging, Haley Nauman

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

The current study is derived from a larger study by Yao et al. (2019) that attempts to understand if Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) is a good diagnostic tool for distinguishing spinal cord injured (SCI) participants from healthy controls from a structural perspective. Additionally, the study aims to determine whether the DTI parameters and the clinical functional scores of the Spinal Cord Independence Measure (SCIM) improve over time for SCI when rehabilitation is implemented. The current study has the same aims but takes Yao’s work further by dividing cervical SCI participants based on the exact location of injury (i.e., upper and …

Conversational Dynamics Between Caregivers And Children : The Role Of Elaboration And Autonomy Support On Children’S Memory Reports, Whitney L. Dartnell May 2023

Conversational Dynamics Between Caregivers And Children : The Role Of Elaboration And Autonomy Support On Children’S Memory Reports, Whitney L. Dartnell

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Maltreatment allegations most often arise during informal conversations between a child and a non-maltreating parent or caregiver. Due to the sensitive nature of these conversations, the ways in which parents respond and in turn question their children about the events they have experienced can take many forms. The conversational dynamics that occur between caregivers and their children during the subsequent dialogue that ensues can impact the accuracy and completeness of children’s reports, as well as children’s memory of the alleged maltreatment or abuse. Legal professionals and developmental psychologists have expressed concern regarding how such conversations may impact children’s later testimony. …
