The Project That Claire, Uh I Mean The Student Completed: Relative Clauses And Repair Disfluencies, Claire O’Shaughnessy Apr 2023

The Project That Claire, Uh I Mean The Student Completed: Relative Clauses And Repair Disfluencies, Claire O’Shaughnessy

Honors Theses

Several areas of psycholinguistics focus on the role of memory in language processing. Two of these areas are repair disfluencies and complex syntactic structures; however, these two topics have traditionally been investigated completely separately from one another. The current experiment combines these two topics by presenting listeners with spoken sentences containing subject-extracted relative clauses (SRCs) and object-extracted relative clauses (ORCs) in which the semantic similarity between the critical noun phrases (NPs) was manipulated. In addition, the sentences could be spoken fluently, or there could be a repair disfluency in which the reparandum contained information that would be potentially helpful in …

Asymmetric Partisan And Ideological Evaluations From Candidate Repositioning: A Randomized Experiment, Andrew Gooch Apr 2023

Asymmetric Partisan And Ideological Evaluations From Candidate Repositioning: A Randomized Experiment, Andrew Gooch

College of Humanities and Social Sciences Departmental Research

This paper explores partisan and ideological differences in evaluations of a hypothetical candidate who repositions after a campaign (aka “flip-flopping”). This study uses a survey experiment with three randomized conditions and a sample of 1338 respondents. The analysis includes average treatment effects and results by 1) a respondent’s party identification and 2) a respondent’s preferred immigration policy position. I show that a candidate (without partisan or ideological labels) who repositions from a liberal immigration policy to the status quo conservative position is drastically penalized in terms of favorability, particularly by Democratic and liberal respondents. However, respondents who supported a conservative …

Digital Capital And Belonging In Universities: Quantifying Social Inequalities In The Philippines, Wilfred Luis Clamor, Czarina Saloma-Akpedonu Apr 2023

Digital Capital And Belonging In Universities: Quantifying Social Inequalities In The Philippines, Wilfred Luis Clamor, Czarina Saloma-Akpedonu

Sociology & Anthropology Department Faculty Publications

This study examines social inequalities in Philippine universities that were exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic. A quantitative approach using a national sample of 677 university students was utilized to measure the mediating role of digital capital on social inequalities associated with belonging to academic spaces. For the purpose of determining direct and indirect impacts, structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed. Sociodemographic (i.e., gender, age, type of residence, and family income) and educational (i.e., type of university, year in the university, and excellence criterion) characteristics were the direct predictors that were examined as exogenous variables for both digital capital and belonging. …

Experiencing Moral Distress Within The Intimate Partner Violence & Sexual Assault Workforce, Rachel J Voth Schrag, Sophia Fantus, Sarah Leat, Saltanat Childress, Leila Wood

Student and Faculty Publications

PURPOSE: Moral distress (MD) refers to the psychological disequilibrium that emerges when institutional policies and/or practices conflict with an individual's professional values and ethics. MD has been interrogated frequently in health care and ancillary medical settings, and has been identified as a critical barrier to enhanced organizational climate and patient care. However, little work has investigated experiences of MD among members of the intimate partner violence (IPV) and sexual violence (SV) workforce.

METHODS: This study investigates MD in a sample of IPV and SV service providers via secondary analysis of 33 qualitative interviews conducted with service providers in the summer …

Spotlight On Female Leadership: Conclusions Based On A College Survey On Gender And Leadership, Marisa Laplante Apr 2023

Spotlight On Female Leadership: Conclusions Based On A College Survey On Gender And Leadership, Marisa Laplante

Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)

This project titled Spotlight on Female Leadership: How College Education at CSB Can Foster Female Leadership. The importance of this topic was to find out why woman are not typically shown to be leaders, and why woman are not treated fairly as leaders. The motivation for this topic came from to find out more reasons why we have never had a female president. I studied this topic concluding a survey with students on campus and staff and faculty about their leadership experiences on and off campus. I also had male students, staff and faculty participate in this survey for comparison …

An “Other” Experience Of Videogames: Analyzing The Connections Between Videogames And The Lived Experience Of Chronic Pain, Gracie Straznickas Apr 2023

An “Other” Experience Of Videogames: Analyzing The Connections Between Videogames And The Lived Experience Of Chronic Pain, Gracie Straznickas

College of Computing and Digital Media Dissertations

In this dissertation I argue for the connections between the lived experience of chronic pain and videogames, exploring what interacts with and influences them. To answer this, I draw on cripistemology as I engage in autoethnography, close-reading and close-gameplay, restorying, mixed methods design, formal interviews, surveys, and inductive coding. I further argue for pushing back against the unhelpful binaries that define the “human” and a false idea of “universal” experience or ability, instead pointing to the intersectionality that better reflects the biopolitics of disability, including both debility and capacity. I engage with these methods in three specific projects that consider …

Caron's Japan: Tokugawa State And Society Through A European Lens, Cegan Hinson Apr 2023

Caron's Japan: Tokugawa State And Society Through A European Lens, Cegan Hinson

Student Research Submissions

Dutch East India Company (VOC) merchant François Caron describes Tokugawa Japan as a rigid political hierarchy controlled by the Shogun, similar to the governments established by absolute monarchs in Europe. Caron understands and insightfully describes Tokugawa society by emphasizing perceived and real similarities between Tokugawa Japan and Early Modern Europe. He struggles to understand religious differences between these societies, but his description of Japanese religious practices still reflects how the Shogunate utilized Buddhism and anti-Christian policies to uphold their rule. Caron also depicts Tokugawa Japan as a land of plentiful resources prime for lucrative trade. He includes the writings of …

Archiving Latinxs On The U.S. Great Plains - Coming To The Plains, Laurinda Weisse

Posters, Proceedings, and Presentations: CTR Library

This panel examines the intricacies of archiving Latinxs in the US Great Plains. Latinx communities comprise a significant portion of the area’s population, yet regional archival holdings often under-represent these groups’ experiences and historical contributions. This panel will describe three universities’ approaches toward addressing this disparity, beginning with bilingual oral history projects “Voces of a Pandemic”, which explores the impact of COVID-19 on Latinx communities near Omaha, and “Coming to the Plains”, which examines immigration experiences of Latinx people in central Nebraska, conducted by the University of Nebraska at Omaha and University of Nebraska at Kearney respectively. The panel also …

The Effects Of Motivational Intervention On College Students In Asynchronous Classes, Abigail Perkins Apr 2023

The Effects Of Motivational Intervention On College Students In Asynchronous Classes, Abigail Perkins

Honors Theses

Procrastination is one of the most common behaviors that interfere with student success (Liu et al., 2020). It affects student performance and has long-lasting effects on motivation. Several studies have shown that motivational interventions can reduce procrastination levels (Liu et al., 2020). Goal setting has been particularly successful (Grunschel et al., 2016; Liu et al., 2020; Schwinger et al., 2009). The present study is focused on the evaluation of whether proximal goal setting will affect academic procrastination in an online, asynchronous class. Seventy-eight undergraduate students enrolled in such a class were invited to participate in this study. Participants were randomly …

Why Are Unemployment Insurance Claims So Low?, Christopher J. O'Leary, Kenneth J. Kline, Thomas A. Stengle, Stephen A. Wandner Apr 2023

Why Are Unemployment Insurance Claims So Low?, Christopher J. O'Leary, Kenneth J. Kline, Thomas A. Stengle, Stephen A. Wandner

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

In this paper, we examine the reasons why unemployment insurance (UI) claims have declined so dramatically over the past three decades. The fall in the UI claims rate is concerning because it suggests a reduced countercyclical effectiveness of the UI program. Additionally, weekly initial UI claims are regarded as an important leading indicator of aggregate economic activity, so their meaning has changed. We use a Oaxaca (1973) decomposition approach to identify the main factors for the decline in claims. The procedure suggests what the level of claims would have been later in the period, had values of variables or parameters …

Resolution Of Cisplatin-Induced Fatigue Does Not Require Endogenous Interleukin-10 In Male Miceb, Kiersten Scott, Nabila Boukelmoune, Cullen Taniguchi, A Phillip West, Cobi J Heijnen, Robert Dantzer

Student and Faculty Publications

Based on previous results showing a pivotal role of endogenous interleukin-10 (IL-10) in the recovery from cisplatin-induced peripheral neuropathy, the present experiments were carried out to determine whether this cytokine plays any role in the recovery from cisplatin-induced fatigue in male mice. Fatigue was measured by decreased voluntary wheel running in mice trained to run in a wheel in response to cisplatin. Mice were treated with a monoclonal neutralizing antibody (IL-10na) administered intranasally during the recovery period to neutralize endogenous IL-10. In the first experiment, mice were treated with cisplatin (2.83 mg/kg/day) for five days and IL-10na (12 μg/day for …

Student and Faculty Publications

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder with bimodal incidence peaks in early childhood and middle-aged and older adults. Few studies have focused on the risk of dementia in AD. The aims of this study were to analyse the incidence, and risk factors for dementia in patients with AD. This nationwide population-based retrospective cohort study enrolled 38,391 adults ≥ 40 years of age with AD and 2,643,602 controls without AD from the Korean National Health Insurance System (NHIS) database from 2009 to 2016. The cumulative incidence probability of all-cause dementia, Alzheimer's disease, or vascular dementia at 8 years …

How Others Perceive Personality Traits Through The Clothing You Wear, Conner Jacobs, Cody Pallen, Savannah Spradlin Apr 2023

How Others Perceive Personality Traits Through The Clothing You Wear, Conner Jacobs, Cody Pallen, Savannah Spradlin

Scholars Day Conference

We looked into how clothing style affected perceived personality traits. 52 female undergraduate students were asked to answer questions in reference to a model presented with different outfits. These questions rated the degree to which the participant thought that the model displayed certain personality traits. Going against predictions, perceived extroversion and emotional stability weren’t affected by clothing styles, perceived agreeableness and conscientiousness were higher in everyday wear than athletic wear, and perceived openness to experience was higher in formal wear than in athletic wear. For society, this study shows that what one wears can affect how others view them.

Biases In Personality Test Results, Emily Shipman, Madison Atchley, Hannah More Apr 2023

Biases In Personality Test Results, Emily Shipman, Madison Atchley, Hannah More

Scholars Day Conference

We studied the differences in perceived accuracy of general and specific personality test results in 89 participants. We hypothesized that participants receiving general feedback would rate their reliability higher than those receiving specific feedback. Each participant took a personality test, received either general or specific results, and then rated the accuracy of those results on a numbered scale. The participants who received general feedback, on average, thought the personality test “got them” the most. These results are important, because they show how people are willing to believe results that are vague because they tend to be more positive.

Integrating Individuals With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities Through Transitional Programs On A College Campus, Alex Delgado, Alex Savage, Audrey Gallagher, Lacy Ornelas

Scholars Day Conference

Individuals with disabilities are often misunderstood, pitied, or even intentionally ignored by society. One huge way that this population can be helped is through community outreach programs that provide physical, mental, and social stimulation for those with disabilities. Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) make up a portion of the population that wants to be and should be associated with experiencing these milestones; we are under a period of expansion in which the standards for the IDD population are being raised. The research to identify the best methods of program set-up for IDD individuals is expanding, with peer-mentoring in …

Social Influence On Risky Choice, Kesha Patel, Michael Bixter Apr 2023

Social Influence On Risky Choice, Kesha Patel, Michael Bixter

Student Research Symposium

Are people’s risk preferences influenced by the preferences of others they interact with or observe? Traditionally, decision preferences were conceptualized as a stable, dispositional trait. However, recent research has demonstrated that there is a degree of malleability in preferences, with social influence having a particularly potent impact. To better understand the extent of social influence on risky decision-making, a mixed-study design was carried out that involved participants making a series of hypothetical monetary choices between smaller-certain and larger-risky rewards. Participants completed three blocks of the risky-choice task: (1) the pre-exposure block where choices were made without any social information, (2) …

Menstruation Products And Perceptions: Breaking Through The Crimson Ceiling, Ava Colleran Apr 2023

Menstruation Products And Perceptions: Breaking Through The Crimson Ceiling, Ava Colleran

Young Historians Conference

This paper examines different views on menstruation throughout history and their effects on social, political, and economic landscapes. The ancient Greeks, Romans, and Mayans all believed in the supposed ‘magical powers’ of menstrual blood. These societies held their own ideas on the limits of these magical abilities, and the good and evil forces they could be used for. Throughout these ancient societies, menstruation was used as a justification for the increased control of the state and men over women’s bodies. If menstrual blood did have these magical powers, it was a power that needed to be limited and controlled so …

Assessing The Impact Of Supply Chain Management Processes On The Lebanese Industry Of Goods And Services During Times Of Uncertainty, Atef Harb, Mony Trad

Arab Economic and Business Journal

In general and through the three functions of Marketing, Operations and Finance, value for the customer is created. However, firms seldom create this value by themselves. Instead, they rely on a variety of suppliers who provide everything from raw materials to accounting. These suppliers when taken together can be thought of a supply chain. Being so diversified, the Lebanese firms have a huge challenge in setting an efficient supply chain process, thus, the firms and through their professional teams were able to set a detailed list of requirements to be followed to consolidate its data and to manage properly the …

China’S Future Military Capabilities, Roger Cliff

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The 2022 National Defense Strategy of the United States of America identifies China as the “pacing challenge” for the US military. This monograph examines the process by which China’s military capabilities are developed, the capabilities China’s military is seeking to acquire in the future, and the resulting implications for the US military. To date, all the extant studies have merely described the capabilities the People’s Liberation Army is currently acquiring. This monograph goes further by drawing on the Chinese military’s publications to identify and discuss the capabilities the People’s Liberation Army seeks to acquire in the future. The monograph finds …

182 - The Intricate Paradox Of Allyship In Collegiate Sport, Josephine Lewis Apr 2023

182 - The Intricate Paradox Of Allyship In Collegiate Sport, Josephine Lewis

GREAT Day Posters

This research aims to explore how allyship is experienced among student-athletes. We conducted five focus groups to gauge first-hand stories of student-athletes who are members of culturally marginalized groups, as well as members from historically dominant groups. Specifically, the research focused on how student-athletes from various backgrounds attempt (or fail) to work together to jointly establish a sense of belonging on their collegiate sports teams. Using co-cultural theory and dominant group theory as theoretical frameworks, and focus groups as the method, the analysis reveals a paradox in how allyship is viewed between different groups. Such paradoxes included the themes of …
