The Use And Influence Of Health Indicators In Municipal Transportation Plans, Kelly Rodgers
The Use And Influence Of Health Indicators In Municipal Transportation Plans, Kelly Rodgers
PSU Transportation Seminars
As a social determinant of health, transportation significantly contributes to well-being through several pathways. Researchers and practitioners have called for health indicators as one way to integrate public health concerns into transportation decision-making. However, it is unclear how indicators are used and what their impact is on policy. This case study of five cities explored how health-related indicators are being used in municipal transportation plans, whether they are institutionalized into transportation agency decision-making processes, and what influence they have on administrative decision-making. In addition, this research also explored the conceptual use of indicators as it relates to social learning and …

Decolonization & The Politics Of Climate Change: The Cases Of Brazil, Pakistan, And Indonesia, Celeste F. Gardy
Senior Theses
In recent years, climate change has gone from a distant threat to an imminent reality. Many countries around the world are being impacted by climate change in different ways. However, decolonized countries are having more difficulty adjusting to and addressing climate change related problems, and these are being compounded by their sociopolitical and economic problems. In Brazil, the deforestation of the Amazon for the sake of agro-extractive capitalism has both accelerated climate change and expelled the Amazonian indigenous inhabitants. In Pakistan, conflict with India has made cooperation with water-sharing agreements in an already water-scarce environment even less likely. In Jakarta, …

Relations Between Peer Influence, Perceived Cost Versus Benefits, And Sexual Offending Among Adolescents Aware Of Sex Offender Registration Risk, Cynthia J. Najdowski, Hayley M. D. Cleary, Paige M. Oja
Psychology Faculty Scholarship
A policy's general deterrent effect requires would-be offenders to be aware of the policy, yet many adolescents do not know they could be registered as sex offenders, and even adolescents who do know may still commit registerable sexual offenses. We tested whether peer influences shape the perceived costs/benefits of certain sexual offenses and, subsequently, registration policy's general deterrent potential in a sample of policy-aware adolescents. The more adolescents believed their peers approve of sexting of nude images, the more likely they were to have sexted. For forcible touching, having more positive peer expectations about sex and perceiving forcible touching as …

Job Stress Moderates The Effects Of A Mindfulness Intervention On Early Childhood Teachers' Emotion Dysregulation, Emily J. Starr
Job Stress Moderates The Effects Of A Mindfulness Intervention On Early Childhood Teachers' Emotion Dysregulation, Emily J. Starr
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Addressing the current crisis of early childhood (EC) teacher turnover is essential for supporting the development of young children. Teacher attrition remains a concern for policymakers globally, and in the United States, early childhood teachers frequently cite job stress and lack of support as reasons for leaving the field. For over 40 years, researchers who study childcare have been concerned about the consequences of work-related stressors. Even if these stressors do not result in turnover, EC teachers’ psychological well-being may be impacted, leading to increased emotion regulation difficulties and more frequent negative teacher-child interactions. Young children’s emotional development is significantly …

Modeling, Simulation and Visualization Student Capstone Conference
The sudden arrival of many migrants can present new challenges for host communities and create negative attitudes that reflect that tension. In the case of Colombia, with the influx of over 2.5 million Venezuelan migrants, such tensions arose. Our research objective is to investigate how those sentiments arise in social media. We focused on monitoring derogatory terms for Venezuelans, specifically veneco and veneca. Using a dataset of 5.7 million tweets from Colombian users between 2015 and 2021, we determined the proportion of tweets containing those terms. We observed a high prevalence of xenophobic and defamatory language correlated with the …

Elementary School Parent Perceptions Of “Critical Race Theory” In The Curriculum, Helen Wallace
Elementary School Parent Perceptions Of “Critical Race Theory” In The Curriculum, Helen Wallace
Honors Theses
Critical Race Theory (CRT) implementations within educational settings is a controversial and polarizing concept in the American political climate. Many Americans are strongly opposed to the idea of CRT within the classroom due to a misguided belief that children have no idea what race or racism is until it is taught to them explicitly. On the other hand, proponents of CRT argue that teaching children to ignore race further perpetuates racial discrimination and prevents children from adequately understanding racial injustice. There is currently a lack of research investigating perceptions of CRT implementations in education among parents. This research aimed to …

Deprofessionalism At The Reference Desk: Validating Room For The New And Evolving Roles Of The Information Professional, Jameson Paul Ghalioungui
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The colloquially named reference desk at public libraries is the quintessential meeting point between patron and librarian. In fact, the desk “remains a tangible symbol of [the librarian’s] mission and work” (Johnson, 2019, p. 92). However, many researchers have questioned the purpose and value of the desk in the “changing reference landscape” (Cassell and Hiremath, 2018, p. 3). The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to explore this changing reference landscape more in depth, what reference services really are, and to reiterate the distinction between a professional librarian (or information professional) and a paraprofessional. A small amount of research serves …
