The Intersection Of Racism And Ableism In Disability Support Services, Carrie E. Mulderink Apr 2023

The Intersection Of Racism And Ableism In Disability Support Services, Carrie E. Mulderink

Communication ETDs

The websites of disability resource centers at six universities are used in a discourse analysis to forefront ways in which the Whiteness of disability is upheld. The main research question, built using a DisCrit (Disability/Critical Race theory) lens, is: how do the institutional discourses of disability resource centers reproduce or challenge particular identities for college students with disabilities? The research sub-question explored in this dissertation that built off of this wider scope is: how are the politics of intersectionality addressed in such discourses? Then, in the second analysis chapter, two more analytical categories are discussed that were generated from my …

Insights Of Precision Medicine Initiative’S All Of Us Research Program In Mississippi, Gouri Mahajan, Kristi Cofer, Richard Summers

Journal of Public Health in the Deep South

While a key component of eliminating health disparities in rural areas is successfully conducting participatory research, many barriers prevent implementation of research projects due to lack of trust in minority communities. Adverse experiences and historical prejudices have left an indelible mark of skepticism and misinformation among these populations and established a breach of communication between researchers and potential participants. The All of Us Research Program led by the National Institute of Health (NIH) at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) in Jackson, Mississippi seeks to both improve communication regarding population research studies among rural Mississippi populations and build trust in …

Racial Differences In Perception And Experiences Of Adverse Treatment By Healthcare Providers: A Cross-Sectional Analysis Of The All Of Us Data, Tanya Funchess, Traci Hayes, Yang Ge, Felix Twum

Journal of Public Health in the Deep South

Health disparities among racial and ethnic groups in the U.S. are well documented. Among the non-medical issues, including discrimination, language barriers, and low health literacy, the patient-provider relationship has been identified as a factor that drives health disparities. Negative interactions with healthcare providers and the healthcare system produce poor health outcomes, exacerbating health inequalities and reducing the likelihood of patients adhering to recommended treatments and therapies. The purpose of this study was to examine racial differences in perceptions and experiences of adverse treatment by healthcare providers. A cross-sectional analysis of select variables from the All of Us research program basic …

Bring Your Broom Project(自分の箒をもって参加しよう), Yoshihiko Ariizumi

Spiritual Proficiency

We cannot underestimate our individual power to influence the society. Through incremental small acts of service has a ripple effect that changes the society because our pure and joyful spirit is highly contagious and easily/powerfully motivates others to an action.

Counterventions: A Reparative Reflection On Interventionist Hci, Rua Mae Williams, Louanne E. Boyd, Juan E. Gilbert Apr 2023

Counterventions: A Reparative Reflection On Interventionist Hci, Rua Mae Williams, Louanne E. Boyd, Juan E. Gilbert

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

Research in HCI applied to clinical interventions relies on normative assumptions about which bodies and minds are healthy, valuable, and desirable. To disrupt this normalizing drive in HCI, we define a “counterventional approach” to intervention technology design informed by critical scholarship and community perspectives. This approach is meant to unsettle normative assumptions of intervention as urgent, necessary, and curative. We begin with a historical overview of intervention in HCI and its critics. Then, through reparative readings of past HCI projects in autism intervention, we illustrate the emergent principles of a counterventional approach and how it may manifest research outcomes that …

Things To Consider Before Co-Signing A Loan, J. David Aiken Apr 2023

Things To Consider Before Co-Signing A Loan, J. David Aiken

Cornhusker Economics

In the context of family farms, includes some general points to consider before you sign a loan guarantee for a family member who is heavily in debt.

Conclusion: Having to consider whether to co-sign a child's loan is a very difficult situation-no one wants to be part of losing part of the family farm or ranch to loan foreclosure. But if the loan guarantee isn't part of a financial turnaround plan that has at least a fighting chance of success, don't sign the guarantee unless you absolutely don't need the money for your own retirement.

Building Credibility, Trust, And Safety On Video-Sharing Platforms, Shuo Niu, Zhicong Lu, Amy X. Zhang, Jie Cai, Carla F. Griggio, Hendrick Heuer

Computer Science

Video-sharing platforms (VSPs) such as YouTube, TikTok, and Twitch attract millions of users and have become influential information sources, especially among the young generation. Video creators and live streamers make videos to engage viewers and form online communities. VSP celebrities obtain monetary benefits through monetization programs and affiliated markets. However, there is a growing concern that user-generated videos are becoming a vehicle for spreading misinformation and controversial content. Creators may make inappropriate content for attention and financial benefits. Some other creators also face harassment and attack. This workshop seeks to bring together a group of HCI scholars to brainstorm technical …

Mentoring For The Retention And Promotion Of Diverse Talent, Holly M. Hetherington Apr 2023

Mentoring For The Retention And Promotion Of Diverse Talent, Holly M. Hetherington

Culminating Experience Projects

Many companies employ mentoring as a tool for investing in employee development and for retention and promotion. However, women and marginalized groups often experience barriers to accessing mentors and to experiencing the benefits of mentoring. Companies can take measures to mitigate these barriers and help women or people from marginalized groups benefit from mentoring. Mentoring can become a tool for investing in diverse talent if companies are willing to consider alternatives to traditional mentoring approaches, provide the necessary training, and develop a supportive culture. This project draws on best practices from feminist perspective and critical race theory scholarship to evaluate …

Sound, Stories, And Psychology: The Perceptions And Motivations Of Audiobook Consumption, Ellice K. Tan

Theses and Dissertations

The demand for audiobooks is higher than ever--and increasing each year, surpassing the growth rate of electronic books, print books, and the US economy overall. Audiobooks have long been used to aid adolescent and struggling readers; however, recent studies have revealed that the majority of audiences consume audiobooks for the purpose of entertainment and relaxation. Despite this, much of the research available on audiobooks still applies to audiobooks as they are used in education. The purpose of this study was to understand the attitudes, opinions, and beliefs of people who love listening to audiobooks. The study was conducted using Q …

Understanding Gendered Hierarchy In Highly Religious Couples, Jolyn C. Schraedel Apr 2023

Understanding Gendered Hierarchy In Highly Religious Couples, Jolyn C. Schraedel

Theses and Dissertations

Although religious beliefs often associate with gendered hierarchy in sociological studies, very few studies have examined religion and gendered hierarchy within intimate relationships. This study used an exemplary sample to explore how religious, heterosexual married couples view and possibly practice gendered hierarchy. Interviews from 77 highly religious, highly satisfied couples provided insight into the following themes: (1) the potential harm of hierarchy, (2) misunderstanding hierarchy, (3) rejection of hierarchy, and (4) acceptance of hierarchy. For couples who expressed acceptance of hierarchy, further exploration revealed subthemes explaining how they conceptualized this practice. Subthemes included (4a) mutual submission, (4b) joint discussion, and …

Specific Impairment Of High School And College Students With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Kayla Boaz

ONU Student Research Colloquium

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, is a common neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. For decades, ADHD was regarded as a disorder that primarily impacted children in academic settings; we now know that ADHD often lasts into adulthood and causes not only academic impairment, but social, emotional, and executive functioning impairment as well.

The transition from high school to college is characterized by increased expectations for emotional regulation abilities, social skill functioning, academic achievement, and personal responsibility. Furthermore, emerging adults are frequently exposed to new experiences with substance use and sexual activity. For emerging adults with ADHD, …
