Environmental Effects Of Fast Fashion: A Study On How Increased Knowledge May Affect Buying Behavior Of Bryant Students, Talia Vicente

Honors Projects in History and Social Sciences

The goal of this study is to determine whether there is a relationship between an increase in knowledge about the environmental effects of fast fashion and the potential impact on the future purchasing behavior of Bryant students. To this end, I conducted a survey analysis of students' purchasing behavior, including the frequency of purchasing clothes, the major brands from which they purchase clothes, and their awareness of the environmental impact of purchasing clothes. I analyzed the overall findings for both male and female students, as well as the relationship between the most frequently shopped-at brands and the frequency of purchasing …

Beyond “Psychic Income”: An Exploration Of Interventions To Address Work-Life Imbalances, Burnout, And Precarity In Contemporary Nonprofit Work, Robbie W. Robichau, Billie Sandberg, Andrew Russo Apr 2023

Beyond “Psychic Income”: An Exploration Of Interventions To Address Work-Life Imbalances, Burnout, And Precarity In Contemporary Nonprofit Work, Robbie W. Robichau, Billie Sandberg, Andrew Russo

Public Administration Faculty Publications and Presentations

Nonprofit scholars and practitioners alike adhere to a long-held assumption that nonprofit work is, and will remain, inherently meaningful work. The long-term marketization of the nonprofit sector coupled with the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic has undercut this narrative. Our research on meaningful nonprofit work indicates that while many nonprofit workers do find their work meaningful, pay, flexibility, and work/life balance are increasingly important to them. This commentary suggests that nonprofit leaders can no longer presume that workers motivated by prosocial values will seek out and stay with nonprofit work, satisfied with the “psychic income” that comes from doing good …

Promoting Information And Visual Literacy Skills In Undergraduate Students Using Infographics, Nicole Kalaf-Hughes Apr 2023

Promoting Information And Visual Literacy Skills In Undergraduate Students Using Infographics, Nicole Kalaf-Hughes

Political Science Faculty Publications

Because research and communication proficiency is ubiquitous in the academic and professional world, teaching students the necessary information literacy (IL) and visual literacy (VL) skills has become increasingly important. Integrating IL and VL pedagogy into substantive coursework can enhance students’ comprehension of the material and teach them to make a meaningful contribution to public awareness and understanding of political science. Yet, faculty often find it challenging to include instruction in these skills with necessary coverage of substantive course material. This article discusses the use of an infographic assignment in an introductory American government course as a tool to teach literacy …

A Historical Evaluation Of The Position Of The United States On Genocide Designations: Framing Implications For Xinjiang, Marley Taylor Belanger Apr 2023

A Historical Evaluation Of The Position Of The United States On Genocide Designations: Framing Implications For Xinjiang, Marley Taylor Belanger

Graduate Capstone Projects

This paper evaluates the historical stances of the United States with the international norm against genocide. It further examines how U.S. positions in precedent cases of genocide may help frame the U.S. response to the current crisis in Xinjiang, China. This paper reviews the historical record of the instances when the U.S. government has designated past atrocities to be considered genocides, and identifies patterns of continuity and change in the decision-making process of the U.S. This work then applies the theories of liberalism, constructivism, and realism to interpret the actions of the United States when deciding to recognize genocide formally. …

Dreams And Dream Work Of Older Adults In Transition: A Review Of The Literature, Tamara J. Hinojosa Apr 2023

Dreams And Dream Work Of Older Adults In Transition: A Review Of The Literature, Tamara J. Hinojosa

All Faculty Scholarship

Older adults face unique life transitions related to retirement from paid work, relocation of residence to higher levels of care, and bereavement/end-of-life. Research exploring dream content and dream work for older adults can facilitate understanding about their unconscious experiences and emotions, can promote greater understanding about their mental health needs, and support dream work methods that enhance well-being for older adults in transition. Although studies in this area are minimal, there is more research about the transitions of bereavement and death for older adults as compared to research in the areas of retirement and relocation of residence for older adults. …

Jesus Was A Refugee: Parables As Contemporary Rhetoric, Luke Litz Apr 2023

Jesus Was A Refugee: Parables As Contemporary Rhetoric, Luke Litz

Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)

This paper performed a rhetorical analysis of the "Refugee" ad released by the He Gets Us campaign by identifying the rhetorical devices employed in the ad, interpreting their meaning, and evaluating the effectiveness of the ad. This advertisement is delivered in the form of a parable, which demonstrates that while the He Gets Us campaign purports to be targeting people who find Jesus unrelatable, this ad particularly targets the evangelical community and provokes them to change their posture toward immigration in the United States. However, it is too early to tell whether the ‘Refugee’ ad will be effective at winning …

The Relationships Among Narcissism, Self-Esteem, And Friendship Jealousy, Hannah Walling, Madison Lincoln, Abby Greskovic, Corinne Derosa, Sarah Bouthillier Apr 2023

The Relationships Among Narcissism, Self-Esteem, And Friendship Jealousy, Hannah Walling, Madison Lincoln, Abby Greskovic, Corinne Derosa, Sarah Bouthillier

Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)

Jealousy, a common and often dreaded emotion, appears to be closely associated with an individual’s self-esteem. In fact, one study connected self-esteem to jealousy and found that adolescents with low self-worth reported the greatest friendship jealousy (Parker et al., 2015). Along with this relationship between self-esteem and jealousy, existing literature finds that self-esteem is closely associated with narcissism. One study found that low self-worth was correlated with high scores in vulnerable narcissism (Kaufman et al., 2020). However, grandiose narcissism was found to be related to high scores of self-esteem (Zeigler-Hill & Besser, 2011). Though previous studies have examined the correlations …

Stuck In The Past? Rumination-Related Memory Integration, Paula T. Hertel, C. Wahlheim, William A. Price, Emily M. Crusius, Christina L. Patino Apr 2023

Stuck In The Past? Rumination-Related Memory Integration, Paula T. Hertel, C. Wahlheim, William A. Price, Emily M. Crusius, Christina L. Patino

Psychology Faculty Research

Memories connected to ruminative concerns repetitively capture attention, even in situations designed to alter them. However, recent research on memory updating suggests that memory for benign substitutes (e.g., reinterpretations) might be facilitated by integration with the ruminative memories. As a first approach, two experiments (Ns = 72) mimicked rumination-related memories with rumination-themed stimuli and an imagery task. College undergraduates screened for ruminative status first studied and imaged ruminative cue-target word pairs, and then in a second phase they studied the same cues re-paired with benign targets (along with new and repeated pairs). On the test of cued recall of …

Examining The Discovery Behaviors Of Comics Consumers, Tara Mccarron Apr 2023

Examining The Discovery Behaviors Of Comics Consumers, Tara Mccarron

Book Publishing Final Research Paper

The comics consumer base is big and it’s only getting bigger. And yet, very little research has been done on the consumer behavior of comics reads. In order to broaden the accessibility to comics consumer research, this paper examined the discovery behavior of 56 survey participants. The survey included questions pertaining to demographics, frequency of comics consumed, genres of comics consumed, formats used to consume comics, and methods used to discover comics. Due to limited scope, this paper focused solely on format preferences, discovery preferences, and the most-popular genre preferences. Based on this research, graphic novels remained the preferred format …

Promoting The Bc Digital Commons: For And By The Community, Ady Dewey Apr 2023

Promoting The Bc Digital Commons: For And By The Community, Ady Dewey

Strategic Public Relations Projects

The BC Digital Commons (DC) is an open-access robust repository of artifacts, scholarship, publications, performances, events, and more. Through Google Scholar and other search engines, the content is accessed worldwide, yet the DC remains a little-known resource on campus. This fact motivated the director of the Forrer Learning Commons to seek input on how to more effectively increase submissions and the number of users.

The 2023 Strategic Public Relations class (COMM 347) began by educating themselves on the DC and brainstorming about potential advantages from a student’s perspective. They identified stakeholders to interview to determine general awareness and to test …

Gender And Contentious Politics: Women's Effect On The Success Of Maximalist Protests, Elizabeth Gaver Apr 2023

Gender And Contentious Politics: Women's Effect On The Success Of Maximalist Protests, Elizabeth Gaver

ASPIRE 2023

This research addresses the question, “Does gender affect the success of maximalist protest movements?” Using Erica Chenoweth’s Women in Resistance (WiRe) and Nonviolent and Violent Campaigns and Outcomes (NAVCO) datasets, this research analyzes 338 maximalist campaigns (protests with the goal of overthrowing a regime) in order to determine if women-led protests are more successful than other types of protests. This quantitative analysis is followed by a case study of the contemporary Iranian women’s movement to test Chenoweth’s theory on nonviolent protests, women, and success.

Tracking Traffickers: Investigating The Relationship Between Human Trafficking And Ports Of Entry, Connor Wardop Apr 2023

Tracking Traffickers: Investigating The Relationship Between Human Trafficking And Ports Of Entry, Connor Wardop

Honors Projects

Human Trafficking is defined as obtaining a person and subjecting them to some sort of servitude against their will. The purpose of this study is to determine if reports of human trafficking occur at higher rates in areas with International Ports of Entry, such as international airports, border control points, or ports for boats. In order to do this, the study utilizes data from the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program run by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) collected from 2013-2020. This data was then added to a program named Business Analyst 2019, a type of Geographic Information System (GIS) …

Advocacy For Accessible Air Travel, Alexandra Bruce, Lydia Kite, Zeida Gutierrez

Spring 2023 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium

Problem: Passengers with disabilities decreased participation in air travel due to anxiety fear of injury, and damage to their assistive technology devices limits their ability to participate in occupations where air travel is used.

Purpose To highlight a need for occupational therapy (OT) collaboration with airlines and related stakeholders; and to advocate for more accessible air travel within the airline industry that can lead to a more safe experience for air travelers with disabilities.

Beyond Reading And Writing: Information Literacy In Higher Education For Lifelong Success, Marta A. Mercado-Sierra, Sarah H. Northam Apr 2023

Beyond Reading And Writing: Information Literacy In Higher Education For Lifelong Success, Marta A. Mercado-Sierra, Sarah H. Northam

Faculty Publications

Information Literacy is critical to finding, evaluating, using, and creating information. It also influences how we navigate daily life, workplace environments, and civic participation. Several Information Literacy standards state that it is a human right. Everyone should have access to the necessary tools to develop their information literacy skills. We argue that students transitioning from high school to college are not college prepared for practicing information literacy. Faculty and Librarians both undertake the work to teach information literacy. Still, it would be more effective for Faculty-Librarian partnerships to utilize strengths in their discipline areas to teach information literacy skills.

Regime Type, Censorship, And Trust In Government With A Special Look At China, Avery K. O'Neill Apr 2023

Regime Type, Censorship, And Trust In Government With A Special Look At China, Avery K. O'Neill

Student Publications

This research stems from a fascination with the unique social media censorship efforts in China. In order to determine if such heavy social media restrictions are unique to China this study uses data from the World Values Survey to investigate the relationship between regime type and social media censorship. The paper then examines the relationship between government censorship effort and citizens’ trust in government. Ultimately, I find that while regime type is a predictor of censorship, censorship does not have a substantial effect on citizens’ confidence in government overall. However, the data does seem to suggest that censorship may be …

Treated Like Aliens: An Analysis Of Refugee Admissions Into The United States By Preferences, Nicadamus Atkins Apr 2023

Treated Like Aliens: An Analysis Of Refugee Admissions Into The United States By Preferences, Nicadamus Atkins

Transformations: Research Papers

From the Refugee Act of 1980 to the present, the President has had the power to create a refugee ceiling, capping the admittance of refugees into the United States. The differential impact that Republican control of the legislative and/or the executive branches has on the admission of refugees into the United States is explored in this paper. Focusing on the refugee system, I examine Presidential political parties along with those of the House of Representatives over the course of 1986 to 2019 to determine if there is a correlation between party ideologies and refugee admission caps. Analyzing data from the …

Inhabiting "Sore Butt Cracks": Queering The U.S. Long-Term Care System, Alison Lawrence Apr 2023

Inhabiting "Sore Butt Cracks": Queering The U.S. Long-Term Care System, Alison Lawrence

Women's and Gender Studies: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

In the face of a failing long-term care system, the author positions a queer theoretical lens as a potential source of creativity and empathy to help us build a care system that supports the dignity and personhood of all patients. The comedic work of a long-term care patient, Youtuber Clay-The-Comedian, is analyzed through a queer-theories lens as a new approach to long-term care that celebrates the personhood of all types of bodies, while also never diminishing the often difficult reality that folks in need of care face. This queer rhetoric engages with the messy, embodied experiences of patients to develop …

The Impact Of Shredders On Leaf Decomposition In The Silver Creek Watershed, Charlie Zielinski Apr 2023

The Impact Of Shredders On Leaf Decomposition In The Silver Creek Watershed, Charlie Zielinski

Environmental Studies: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

The carbon released from leaf decomposition plays a critical role in the riparian ecosystem and aquatic food web. By testing rates of leaf decomposition in urban streams we can survey the health of a watershed by sampling the carbon release amidst key locations in the area. In this study, we had two objectives: The assessment of the role of shredder macroinvertebrates in leaf decomposition, and the assessment of leaf decomposition rates across sites in Silver Creek. This project is part of the long term assessment of Davenport streams conducted by Augustana College's Upper Mississippi Center. We hypothesized that by excluding …

The Role Of Culture On Psychological Intimate Partner Violence Victimization Among Latinx Males, Saúl A. Padilla Apr 2023

The Role Of Culture On Psychological Intimate Partner Violence Victimization Among Latinx Males, Saúl A. Padilla

Undergraduate Honors Theses

In this study, I investigated the individual and additive effects of both acculturation and enculturation on experiencing psychological intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization within low-income Latinx males. I hypothesized that there would be a significant positive association between acculturation and psychological IPV victimization, a significant negative association between enculturation and psychological IPV victimization, and a significant negative association between the additive effects of acculturation and enculturation on psychological IPV victimization. To accomplish these aims, this study conducted a secondary analysis of the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing study (FFCWS) data, which assessed low-income mothers and fathers that had just …

The Sino-Soviet Split: A Domestic Ideology Analysis, Caleb Ringger Apr 2023

The Sino-Soviet Split: A Domestic Ideology Analysis, Caleb Ringger

Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies

In December 1960, the Peking Review, China’s only English national news magazine, celebrated the “Eternal, Unbreakable Sino-Soviet Friendship” on its front page (Peking Review 1960). The alliance between the world’s largest communist nations certainly seemed ironclad, at least from an outside perspective. But over the next decade, relations between the two allies completely deteriorated, ultimately resulting in bloody confrontation on the Sino-Soviet border, where dozens were killed in violent clashes in March 1969. What accounts for the rapid deterioration in relations between China and the Soviet Union? How could two seemingly close allies turn into enemies so quickly?

Accuracy Of Recollection Without Rehearsal, Carolyn Lowe, Jen Bui, Ella Marks, Maddie Rowe Apr 2023

Accuracy Of Recollection Without Rehearsal, Carolyn Lowe, Jen Bui, Ella Marks, Maddie Rowe

Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)

Priming refers to the influence of encountered objects on future responses to similar objects (Wang et. al., 2003). Cross-modality priming occurs when the stimuli are presented in one modality and tested within another (Marinis, 2018). However, there is not much research done on verbal and visual cross-modality priming. This study looks at the effects of cross-modality implicit priming on recall and recognition. Participants read 8 different priming stories. After each, participants completed a visual memory task where they looked at a slide of several images for 5 seconds, and then wrote which images they remembered. After this, they answered 2 …

Relationship Between Quality Time, Conscientiousness, And Relationship Satisfaction, Lindsey Edwards, Gavin Mitchell, Talaia Goodman, Emily Cloud, Max Blessinger Apr 2023

Relationship Between Quality Time, Conscientiousness, And Relationship Satisfaction, Lindsey Edwards, Gavin Mitchell, Talaia Goodman, Emily Cloud, Max Blessinger

Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)

Relationships are challenging, but can the key to relationship satisfaction boil down to understanding your partner's expression of love or simply spending more time together? Quality time, one of the five love languages, has been found to be the most common love language (Mostova et al., 2022). The love language of quality time has previously been associated with higher levels of conscientiousness, a big five personality trait positively correlated with feelings of love, intimacy, and passion (Surijah & Sari, 2018; Engel et al., 2002). The purpose of the present study is to investigate the relationship between levels of conscientiousness and …

Do Our Eyes Deceive Us?: Polarization And The American Electorate, Lukus Perry Apr 2023

Do Our Eyes Deceive Us?: Polarization And The American Electorate, Lukus Perry

Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)

The political divide in the American electorate seems to have increased in recent times. In order to address and hopefully mend the division we need to look deeper into the causes of political polarization. Religiosity, media usage, class, and location all play roles in this equation and the goal is to see which factor is more divisive. Are religiously active people more polarized than others? The idea of perception vs reality also arises in this discussion, but based on moral alignments with candidates and issues, I presume that the most polarizing factor is religiosity. Using survey data from the American …

House Bill 1316 & Senate Bill 0538: Paid Leave For Adoptive And Foster Parents, Lilia Zylstra, Caroline Shutley, Sydney Reyes, Evelyn Mankowski

Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)

House Bill 1316 and its companion Senate Bill 0538 propose that employees of the state of Tennessee should be allotted up to 6 weeks paid leave if they become a foster parent to a minor or adopt a minor. To better understand HB 1316 and SB 0538 from a social work perspective, it is vital to examine how the proposed bill promotes the importance of human relationships, the dignity and worth of a person, and social justice—while also recognizing where the bill has room for growth. This study of HB1316 will provide an in-depth analysis of the bill from a …
