Testing Current Theories Of Auxiliary Selection In German Verbs Of Motion On A 19th Century Corpus, Anna G. Karpowicz , '23
Testing Current Theories Of Auxiliary Selection In German Verbs Of Motion On A 19th Century Corpus, Anna G. Karpowicz , '23
Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards
German verbs of motion can use either the perfect auxiliary sein ‘to be’ or the perfect auxiliary haben ‘to have’. It has been posited that the auxiliary selection in these types of verbs is linked to the presence of a [locomotion] feature, sein ‘to be’ occurring with [+locomotion] and haben ‘to have’ occurring with [- locomotion]. Lewandowski (2018) uses empirical data from contemporary German to argue that there is further distinction than previously thought, namely that within the manner-of-motion verb category, non-directional motion verbs and directional motion verbs diverge in auxiliary selection when the [-locomotion] feature is present. I am …
Quaker Interpretation: The Role Of Communication And Identity In The Production Of Quaker Values, Katalina I. Kastrong , '23
Quaker Interpretation: The Role Of Communication And Identity In The Production Of Quaker Values, Katalina I. Kastrong , '23
Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards
In this thesis, I examine the shift in Quaker language use over time, focusing on the formation of group identity, the accessibility of Quaker language, and legacy and silence in a history of racial discrimination. These aspects of Quaker practice are crucial in addressing concerns about inclusivity and justice work, providing the potential for greater metalinguistic intentionality. My research analyzes language's role in shaping such attitudes, beliefs, and action. I examine seventeenth century Quakers’ use of Quaker Plain Speech (QPS), observing that the progression towards modern Quaker language is uneven among these three areas of focus. I claim that these …

What Before Means: Teaching About The Communicative Contribution Of The English Pluperfect, Max Miller
What Before Means: Teaching About The Communicative Contribution Of The English Pluperfect, Max Miller
Publications and Research
This paper presents a text-based analysis of the communicative functions of the simple past and pluperfect tenses of English, and offers a pedagogical approach to assist learners in acquiring them. Following a functional, usage-based linguistics perspective, the analysis holds that the simple past expresses Time PAST, while the pluperfect expresses Time PAST, BEFORE. Thus only the latter tense signals a speaker's subjective creation of a linkage in time. The understanding of these meanings can enhance an English language teacher's effectiveness in the classroom (as in selecting texts and activities) and a language user's effectiveness in communication. A classroom-based pedagogical application …

Validation Of The Occupational Depression Inventory In Brazil: A Study Of 1,612 Civil Servants, Renzo Bianchi, Danísio Calixto Cavalcante, Cristina Queirós, Blezi Daiana Menezes Santos, Jay Verkuilen, Irvin Sam Schonfeld
Publications and Research
Objective: The Occupational Depression Inventory (ODI) assesses work-attributed depressive symptoms. The ODI has demonstrated robust psychometric and structural properties. To date, the instrument has been validated in English, French, and Spanish. This study examined the psychometric and structural properties of the ODI's Brazilian-Portuguese version.
Methods: The study involved 1612 civil servants employed in Brazil (MAGE = 44, SDAGE = 9; 60% female). The study was conducted online across all Brazilian states.
Results: Exploratory structural equation modeling (ESEM) bifactor analysis indicated that the ODI meets the requirements for essential unidimensionality. The general factor accounted for 91% of the common variance extracted. …

Patriotism And Democratic Education, Richard Dagger
Patriotism And Democratic Education, Richard Dagger
Political Science Faculty Publications
Whether patriotism has a valuable part to play in the educational system of a democratic society is now a highly contentious matter. This chapter argues that it does, principally because such a society is a kind of cooperative practice that requires its members to enact, enforce, and – in most cases – obey the laws that govern their self-governing polity. Democracies rely on rules, and especially the rule of law, to provide the reasonably clear expectations necessary to coordinate public activities and to overcome collective-action problems. By encouraging citizens to set aside personal advantage and play a cooperative part in …

Reactions To Latinx Children’S Picture Books From Indie Presses: An Analysis Of Online Consumer Reviews, Karina L. Agbisit
Reactions To Latinx Children’S Picture Books From Indie Presses: An Analysis Of Online Consumer Reviews, Karina L. Agbisit
Book Publishing Final Research Paper
This study analyzed online consumer reviews of children's picture books published by three small, independent presses focused on providing representation of Latinx people and culture. Reviews showed an overwhelmingly positive reaction to the use of bilingual text. Reactions to the use of illustrations support research indicating a preference for bright, colorful images. Additional themes that emerged in reviews include the timeliness of a bilingual book about expressing feelings in the first year of the Covid pandemic; the importance of personal connections to expressions of culture and traditions in the text; the pros and cons of using photographs instead of illustrations; …

The Two-Way Mundlak Estimator, Badi H. Baltagi
The Two-Way Mundlak Estimator, Badi H. Baltagi
Center for Policy Research
Mundlak (1978) shows that the fixed effects estimator is equivalent to the random effects estimator in the one-way error component model once the random individual effects are modeled as a linear function of all the averaged regressors over time. In the spirit of Mundlak, this paper shows that this result also holds for the two-way error component model once this individual and time effects are modeled as linear functions of all the averaged regressors across time and across individuals. Woolridge (2021) also shows that the two-way fixed effects estimator can be obtained as a pooled OLS with the regressors augmented …

Inclusive Pedagogy Through Digital Scholarship: A Case Study, Rebecca Fitzsimmons, Anne Shelley
Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library
After a coordinated effort in 2019 to determine faculty activities and needs related to digital humanities, our library began offering outreach and support to faculty using digital humanities in research and teaching. In summer 2020, after two librarians facilitated a faculty development workshop on using digital humanities tools in the classroom, an instructor in educational leadership invited the librarians to help her incorporate multimodal publishing, data visualization, and mapping methods into one of her fall 2020 courses related to community building in K-12 education. The tools incorporated into the course allowed a range of collaborative possibilities between students, creating new …

Study Of Fashion And Politics, Jacqueline Arena
Library Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Research
The purpose of this research is to analyze the way fashion has been used as a vessel for
political statements; specifically through studying the work of artists Jean Paul Gaultier, Alexander Mcqueen and Vivienne Westwood. Gaultier and Mcqueen showcased shocking collections that caught the public eye by testing gender boundaries and reflecting historical events. Westwood’s work was a protest, and she was an activist. The sources included highlight the success of these unique designers. Furthermore, the research evaluates how political statements by fashion designers have become harmful because today newer designers are vying for the success of trailblazers such as …
