Deliver New Services At Research Libraries In Post-Pandemic Times, Shali Zhang

IATUL 2023 Slides

In their new book, In Designing Libraries for the 21st Century, by H. Thomas Hickson, Joan K. Lippincott, and Leonora Crema, it says that “While many library expansions were still driven by the need for added stack space well into the 21st century, the increasing urgency to develop new learning spaces, incorporating new technologies and collaborative spaces for students, led libraries to change.” Indeed, we have witnessed that research libraries have continued looking in new ways to use library spaces to support the needs of learning, teaching, and research, with current technologies, dynamic services, and the spaces to support collaborations. …

Forging The Future: Connecting Research To Communities, Angela Hackstadt

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

Lightning talk delivered at the ACRL 2023 Conference in Pittsburgh, PA.

The literature suggests that information users beyond the academy rely on a variety of sources in the course of their work, most of which can be described as grey literature. However, academic researchers tend to focus their efforts on other research publications, like peer reviewed journal articles, because there is little perceived professional benefit to producing grey literature. A 2022 survey of state government and local nonprofit workers sheds some light on the gap between academic researchers and a potential audience for their work and illustrates the potential for …

Leading The Way: University Libraries Advancing Sustainable Development Goals, Modiehi Rammutloa, Lorette Jacobs

IATUL 2023 Slides

Universities play a critical role in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through their mandate of teaching, education, research, and community engagements. Through their support of the mother body, university libraries provide access to information towards the achievement of SDGs. One way of achieving the SDGs is through citizen science. Citizen science is the involvement of community members in scientific research. The success of citizen science projects toward achieving SDGs has been vastly reported in the literature. Data produced from citizen science projects can be used towards achieving SDGs. This is where academic librarians can play a critical role in ensuring …

Food insecurity among college and university students has increased in the past decade. The COVID-19 pandemic has presented unique public health challenges, including increased food insecurity. In a cross-sectional survey of students at a private university in the midwestern U.S. (N=253) we examined how student food security status changed during the pandemic and what relation-ships exist between changes in food security and various aspects of student identities. Twenty-nine percent of responding students indicated that they became less food secure during the pandemic, and the overall reported food insecurity rate increased by 130.77%. Change in respondent food security status during the …

LSU Master's Theses

Valorization of food wastes/byproducts has become a major subject of research to increase sustainability of the global food supply chain. Seafood industries generate a substantial quantity of byproducts. An online survey was used to evaluate Willingness-to-try (WTT), the effect of a Consumer Safety Statement (CSS) on WTT, perceived risks and product appropriateness associated with seafood byproducts in food as influenced by gender and race. Based on the finding from this survey, a clean label catfish bone powder (CBP) was developed and used for breaded catfish sticks which were evaluated for sensory liking, emotional profile, and purchase intent. Previous consumers of …

Presentations

This presentation will explore perspectives on inclusive hiring practices from both sides of the table. The library's first diversity residency search and subsequent faculty searches integrated inclusive recruitment and high-empathy hiring practices. The diversity residency search committee chair, one of the successful residency candidates, and a tenure-track faculty hired using the new approach team up to dissect the hiring process from their perspectives. They will discuss the work behind critically examining the existing hiring process, designing an inclusive recruitment plan, and implementing a new structure in order to ensure empathy to applicants going through the process. They will then discuss …

Engagement In Water Governance Action Situations In The Lake Champlain Basin, Patrick Bitterman, Christopher Koliba Mar 2023

Engagement In Water Governance Action Situations In The Lake Champlain Basin, Patrick Bitterman, Christopher Koliba

School of Global Integrative Studies: Faculty Publications

Water quality governance encompasses multiple “wicked” interacting problems that manifest within social-ecological systems. Concerned governments, institutions, and actors concerned with addressing these issues must wrestle with complex systems that span time, space, and scale. This complexity of connected systems requires the participation of multiple actors across political boundaries, problem areas, and hydrologic domains. In Lake Champlain (US), frequent cyanobacteria blooms negatively affect property values, recreational activities, and public infrastructure, in addition to their impacts on the aquatic ecosystem. Through a survey of actors working on water quality in the Lake Champlain Basin, we analyze how actor participation in structured issue …

How Have Researchers Defined Institutions, Politics, Organizations And Governance In Research Related To Epidemic And Pandemic Response? A Scoping Review To Map Current Concepts, Austin Wu, Shivangi Khanna, Shelly Keidar, Peter Berman, Laura Jane Brubacher

Student and Faculty Publications

In recent years, the literature on public health interventions and health outcomes in the context of epidemic and pandemic response has grown immensely. However, relatively few of these studies have situated their findings within the institutional, political, organizational and governmental (IPOG) context in which interventions and outcomes exist. This conceptual mapping scoping study synthesized the published literature on the impact of IPOG factors on epidemic and pandemic response and critically examined definitions and uses of the terms IPOG in this literature. This research involved a comprehensive search of four databases across the social, health and biomedical sciences as well as …

The Decline Of Routine Tasks, Education Investments, And Intergenerational Mobility, Patrick Bennett, Kai Liu, Kjell Salvanes Mar 2023

The Decline Of Routine Tasks, Education Investments, And Intergenerational Mobility, Patrick Bennett, Kai Liu, Kjell Salvanes

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

How does a large structural change to the labor market affect education investments made at young ages? Exploiting differential exposure to the national decline in routine-task intensity across local labor markets, we show that the secular decline in routine tasks causes major shifts in education investments of high school students, where they invest less in vocational-trades education and increasingly invest in college education. Our results highlight that labor demand changes impact inequality in the next generation. Low-ability and low-SES students are most responsive to task-biased demand changes and, as a result, intergenerational mobility in college education increases.

“If you build it, they will come,” asserts the omniscient narrator in the movie Field of Dreams. This magical sentiment rings true in a baseball setting, where zealous fandoms believe ardently in their teams and heroes. In the field of institutional repositories, however… well, it takes a little more time and effort! Specifically, you have to build it, promote it, populate it, and consistently demonstrate the value of it to students and faculty!

This poster describes how a subject librarian partnered with institutional repository managers to build and grow the digital scholarly presence of a college within the university’s …

Consumer Purchase Intent In Opinion Leader Live Streaming, Jihong Huo Mar 2023

Consumer Purchase Intent In Opinion Leader Live Streaming, Jihong Huo

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The COVID-19 prompted the live-streaming industry to become popular, and live streaming by opinion leaders became a new way of shopping. In live-streaming by opinion leaders, the time from understanding the product to completing the purchase behavior is short; opinion leaders, in turn, use live-streaming to boost sales and personal exposure. Despite the popularity of opinion leaders' live consumption, there are still relatively few studies on it. Therefore, this paper will study what factors promote consumers' purchase intention during the live streaming of opinion leaders.Using the Stimulus-Organism-Response Model (SOR) as a theoretical framework, this paper uses a quantitative research approach …

Spatial Mismatch Between Electric Vehicles (Evs) And Ev Charging Stations In Florida, Chuang Yin

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Carbon emission is a key contributor to global warming and climate change. Reducing carbon emissions has posed as a challenge for several decades, prompting a rising alliance of nations, municipalities, corporations, and other establishments to commit to achieving net-zero emissions. One of the trends in many countries is to replace traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles with alternative fuel vehicles, especially electric vehicles (EVs). The Global EV Outlook 2021 report by IEA reveals that there was a 41% surge in the registration of electric cars in 2020, resulting in the sale of approximately 3 million electric cars worldwide. Since the …

Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms In Response To Covid-19–Related Adverse Events In Hispanic Individuals, Michiyo Hirai, Laura L. Vernon Mar 2023

Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms In Response To Covid-19–Related Adverse Events In Hispanic Individuals, Michiyo Hirai, Laura L. Vernon

Psychological Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

The current study examined the effects of COVID-19 death and infection stressors on posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and the moderating role of resilience and coping in the association between the COVID-19 stressors and PTSS in Hispanic young adults. On average, COVID-19 death led to higher PTSS than COVID-19 infection. Among participants with relatively high resilience, higher engagement coping, or lower disengagement coping, the magnitudes of the impacts of COVID-19 death and infection on PTSS were similar, suggesting the buffering role of resilience and coping. Resilience and engagement coping may protect Hispanic individuals from elevated PTSS in response to traumatic experiences.
