Assessing Ecosystem Health Through Contaminants In The Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve, Nancy Torres Jan 2023

Assessing Ecosystem Health Through Contaminants In The Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve, Nancy Torres

Theses

Although the Tijuana River Estuary (TRE) remains the largest, most-intact coastal wetland in Southern California, it has a history of major changes, much of this related to its location immediately north of the US / Mexico Border. One of the primary challenges is cross-border flows from the rapidly growing city of Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico, and the delivery of wastewater, debris, and sediment to sensitive coastal wetland ecosystems. There is a need to more fully investigate these environmental changes to assess the ecosystem health of the Tijuana River Estuary over time, especially related to pollution impacts. This can inform an …

An Autoethnographic Reflection From Two Black Women Ph.D.’S And Their White Woman Advisor On The Use And Impact Of Sista Circle Methodology In The Dissertation Process, B. Nathan, Rashida Love, Laurie A. Carlson

The Qualitative Report

Black Women doctoral students experience the journey as “outsiders within” (Collins, 1986), navigating how to excel and thrive while being on the margins (hooks, 1991). The authors of this manuscript reflect upon the impact of adopting a culturally relevant methodology and method, integrating various forms of Black Women’s art, and challenging tenets of traditional western research. An auto-ethnographic exercise illuminated the critical need for Nathan and Love to insert their Black Womanhood into their dissertation research process using Sista Circle Methodology, an active decision to decolonize research. Carlson provided a critical link to ensuring Nathan and Love graduated and provides …

“Narimo Ing Pandum”: How Highlander Women Perceive Poverty As A Destiny In Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta, Wasisto Raharjo Jati

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

The Javanese proverb “narimo ing pandum”exemplifies a belief among poor people to accept their impoverishment as the Divine will of God. This belief, however, has the adverse effect of habituating people to accept poverty. Such perception is conditioned, among others, by the availability of state-provided social aid as well as family or community support, which has helped the poor to stay afloat in moments of crises. In a patriarchal society, poverty poses even more risks and challenges for women, who are often conditioned to be reliant on men to survive. As such, poor women are likely required to find …

This paper offers multidisciplinary research to consciousness. This approach enables us to spot the problem, intersection, and division across disciplines. Ecological Imperialism In Yvonne Owuor Dust Ngũgĩ Wa Thiong'o’S Petals Of Blood, Eguvwebere Adanma Anthonia

International Review of Humanities Studies

Modern African Literature grew out of the need for re-identification and reevaluation of the African cultural heritage. Despite that, colonialism and its legacies continue to have a powerful and lasting impact in Africa. Using two literary texts from East Africa, Kenya, reflecting post-colonial and neo-colonial eras, this study examines the validity of the continuation of Ecological Imperialism in Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o's Petals of Blood (1977) and Owuor Yvonne Adhiambo's Dust (2013). An analytical appraisal of the texts reveals that the post/neocolonial nation-state, far from embodying the new hope of the masses, is a replica of the colonial master's political system …

Gendered Nollywood: The Crisis Of Femininity In Contemporary Nigerian Films, Abiodun Olayiwola

International Review of Humanities Studies

Studies on the construction of women in Nollywood films have majorly focused on the subjugation of women by the phallocentric African men and the need for socio-economic liberation. Most of these films perceive women as a socially constituted homogenous group on the basis of shared oppression. However, this study intends to interrogate gender relations in terms of the way cultural and development policies are currently regulating the balance of power between men and women in a rapidly mutating African society. Through a reading of select Nigerian films, the paper examines how Nollywood films construct the heterogeneous roles performed by men …

It aims to see the possibility of the female heroines and male heroes to defy conventional gender stereotypes and determine the female heroines’ agency as horror movies tend to objectify the female characters. This paper uses the Cult of True Womanhood (Welter, 1966), Male Gender Role Identity (Pleck, 1981) and representation theory (Hall, 1997) to analyse the dialogues and interaction of the …

These strategies have had a diversity of consequences on the urban planning of cities like Cairo and repercussions on community dynamics and community social fabric. Accordingly, this thesis demonstrates the impact and reflects the consequences of …

Here, we consider the challenges of working with such datasets, including outdated or disorganized information, and fragmentary data. Based on our experiences, we …
