Bringing Archaeology Into Religious And Moral Education: A Case Study From Scotland, Samantha Wilson, Philip Tonner, Kenneth Brophy Jul 2024

Bringing Archaeology Into Religious And Moral Education: A Case Study From Scotland, Samantha Wilson, Philip Tonner, Kenneth Brophy

Journal of Archaeology and Education

Archaeology provides ‘material expression’ to the narratives and discourses which construct and bind historical identity. When brought into the classroom it can provide a powerful tool to help school pupils untangle complex structures and meanings, and to begin to develop their own interpretive and evaluative skills. This article explores the use of archaeology in implementing aspects of the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence. We focus on one subject in particular, Religious and Moral Education (RME), and we analyze one unit of study designed and taught to Secondary 1 and 2 pupils, with ages ranging from 11- 13. We draw upon a …

Methods:
An internet-based open-label randomized control trial was conducted nationwide with a partial crossover design, and 168 adolescents aged 13 to 21 years with symptoms of depression were recruited between November 2020 and September 2021. Participants were randomized (1:1) to …

Medicare Drug Price Negotiation Program Draft Guidance, Fred Ledley M.D., Edward Zhou Pharmd, Paula Chaves Da Silva Ph.D. Jul 2024

Medicare Drug Price Negotiation Program Draft Guidance, Fred Ledley M.D., Edward Zhou Pharmd, Paula Chaves Da Silva Ph.D.

CISI Publication

This comment focuses on Section 50.1, provisions 1 & 3 of the draft guidance regarding the negotiation of a “maximum fair price” under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), research and development (R&D) costs of the primary manufacturer, and prior federal financial support for novel therapeutic discovery and development. Specifically, we argue that a negotiated, “maximum fair price” must consider both public sector (federal) and private sector (manufacturer) investments and provide returns to both commensurate with the scale and risk of their investments. This comment addresses three issues and makes specific recommendations regarding each:

  1. In negotiating a “maximum fair price,” both …

Hard Or Soft: An Exploration Of What Skills A Sport Management Student Is Lacking, Ashley Ryder, Jillian Mcniff Villemaire, Taylor Behl

The COSMA Journal

An important measure of success of sport management programs in higher education is how prepared students are for their professional careers. Programs often include various experiential learning opportunities such as internships in their curriculum to improve student employability. However, there is still concern that students may not be prepared for success in their internships and in the field. The purpose of this study was to identify which skills sport management student interns needed the most improvement, according to their intern supervisor. Using a single institution, this study analyzed intern supervisor’s questionnaire responses from 2017-2022 at a small, private college in …

Vernacular: New Connections in Language, Literature, & Culture

This article explores Jennifer Solheim’s conceptualization of “the call to listen” in postcolonial Francophone cultural production, as she argues for the importance of engaging with and responding to immigrant and minority narratives within this cultural milieu. This article further explores the dynamic relationship between media consumption and artistic creation, specifically the innovative realms of “accented” and “intercultural” cinema that have emerged from the conditions of globalization and migration. The unique cinematic languages of these forms convey the intricate experiences of those living in exile or as part of post-migratory populations.

An in-depth analysis is presented on Mai Hua’s documentary Les …

This study, guided by the Social Determinants of Health framework and Social Ecological Model, examined how SDOH impact the presence of anxiety during adolescence. This study set out to understand what sociocultural determinants predict anxiety, using the 2018 National Survey of Children’s Health dataset. The analysis included a logistic regression to determine the predictability of SDOH on anxiety in adolescence. The results indicated that various SDOH are significant predictors of anxiety, while also indicating that the absence of adverse SDOH predicts the lack of anxiety. Further, unique findings related to race/ethnicity, age, and gender set the stage for additional research …

Cross-Exchange Crypto Risk: A High-Frequency Dynamic Network Perspective, Yifu Wang, Wanbo Lu, Min-Bin Liu, Rui Ren, Wolfgang Karl Hardle Jul 2024

Cross-Exchange Crypto Risk: A High-Frequency Dynamic Network Perspective, Yifu Wang, Wanbo Lu, Min-Bin Liu, Rui Ren, Wolfgang Karl Hardle

Sim Kee Boon Institute for Financial Economics

Cross-exchange crypto trading presents inherent risks, particularly for centralized exchanges. Investors observe exacerbating crypto volatility and counterparty risk and would like to quantify these elements of crypto trades. The multiple exchanges require a multivariate view on the structures of risk spillover across exchanges. Here, a Multivariate Heterogeneous AutoRegression (MHAR) model is designed and analyzed, accommodating the stylized facts of crypto markets, including 24/7 trading and the long-memory effect on return variations. The proposed MHAR approach clearly reveals the intensity of interconnectedness among exchanges during extreme events, e.g., the Bitcoin market. Additionally, one observes extremely volatile eigenvector centralities of Futures Exchange …

Design And Evaluation Of An Esa-Based Method Of Ensemble Subsetting For A Wofs (Warn On Forecast-Like System), Daniel J. Butler Jul 2024

Design And Evaluation Of An Esa-Based Method Of Ensemble Subsetting For A Wofs (Warn On Forecast-Like System), Daniel J. Butler

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Forecasting severe thunderstorm environments in the southeastern United States can be challenging due to mesoscale heterogeneities such as shortwave troughs, pre-existing airmass boundaries, cold fronts aloft, low-level jets, dry air intrusions, and mesoscale lows. To combat these challenges, ensemble sensitivity analysis (ESA) may be applied to a Warn-on-Forecast (WOF)-like ensemble to improve forecasts of severe convection through ensemble weighting and subsetting. Ensemble-based weighting and subsetting uses ensemble members that most accurately represent the thunderstorm environment in areas of mesoscale heterogeneity. This study creates and evaluates the ensemble-based weighting and subsetting in four cases of severe thunderstorm occurrence. The open parameter …

My Garden Nursery Associate/Intern, Trinity Shaffer

College of the Environment Internship Reports

My summer internship at My Garden Nursery has allowed me to learn and experience a different aspect of environmentalism, the consumer side of it. The job mainly consisted of helping customers pick the perfect plants and products for their gardens. This included soil and fertilizer recommendations for certain plants, treating plants of insects of diseases, animal repellent recommendations such as deer or moles, and weed treatment and/or prevention. In addition, helping customers pick out perfect plants based on the areas conditions, such as how much light there is, soil type, and more, was a big part of the internship. Restocking …

Wild Whatcom is an incredible non-profit organization that has had a profound impact on me, as well as hundreds of families around Bellingham. Through outdoor education, Wild Whatcom has provided more than 50,000 hours of nature time to youth in just one year. This organization truly changes the lives of the youth, giving them an opportunity to connect with nature while learning and having fun. I am so blessed and forever grateful to have spent my summer at Wild Whatcom.

Downtown Bellingham Partnership Intern, Rebecca Cochran Jul 2024

Downtown Bellingham Partnership Intern, Rebecca Cochran

College of the Environment Internship Reports

Downtown Bellingham Partnership (DBP) combines the two to benefit downtown. With cigarette butts being the most common form of litter that we see downtown they have an impact on Whatcoms watershed and the Bellingham bay. Cigarette butts are filled with microplastics, toxic chemicals, and can poison our local food web. DBP has over five cigarette waste containers called buttlers. These buttlers stop people from leaving cigarettes on the ground where they may leach chemicals like lead and arsenic into the soil. The buttlers are a safe disposal site, contrary to normal trash cans where throwing away a lit cigarette can …

Whatcom County Public Works - Engineering Services Intern, Chris (Christopher Adam) Paradowski

College of the Environment Internship Reports

This summer I had the opportunity to return to the Whatcom County Public Works Department as an engineering services intern working in the traffic division. Last year I did the same internship, but not as an enrolled student at Western, so I was thrilled to be welcomed back for another summer so that I can further hone my skills of working in local government and expand on the skills I gained last year. While the traffic division doesn’t necessarily sound like the place for an environmental studies student to land an internship, I will elucidate in this report how working …

King County Parks Vegetation Intern, Connor A. Jackson Jul 2024

King County Parks Vegetation Intern, Connor A. Jackson

College of the Environment Internship Reports

I find that the internship helped me develop a greater understanding of natural resource management and GIS usage, while also equipping me with the technical and practical skills to operate in those spheres. Working firsthand in natural areas provided invaluable experience as to specific management needs, including designing and managing natural restoration habitat, strategies for controlling noxious weeds according to their species characteristics, and how individual tasks address broader operational goals. In addition, I received support to pursue other qualifications, such as obtaining a pesticide application license, which is all-important for the work we were doing. Finally, in addition to …

Waste Management Intern, Shaunak Joi Roy

College of the Environment Internship Reports

Working an internship at Waste Management has been an incredible journey this summer. From learning hands on skills and more about the solid waste division, to meeting all kinds of people who come from various backgrounds, Waste Management has taught me a lot. One might wonder how one of the largest Solid Waste Division haulers in North America can offer so much to learn and how one would choose to do an internship there. Earlier this year when the search for internships came, it was hard finding something that would fit the needs of my education background along with my …

Costco Esg Reporting Intern, Katie Schwartz Jul 2024

Costco Esg Reporting Intern, Katie Schwartz

College of the Environment Internship Reports

I learned that Costco utilizes Microsoft Sustainability Manager (MSM) for emissions calculations, which relies on data input from various employees across the organization. So, while I wasn't directly responsible for calculating emissions, I did get to play a part in analyzing and validating the data generated by MSM. This involved reviewing data for any variances that exceeded an acceptable threshold, which I would identify by calculating the percent change period over period. I would then analyze the cause of those discrepancies. For example, if a new warehouse was built or data hadn't been fully updated, that could cause our emissions …

Iko Pacific Industries Summer Intern, Anna Brinkerhoff

College of the Environment Internship Reports

My primary project at IKO Pacific centered around getting a recycling program set up for our substantial amounts of plastic film waste. The film is low-density polyethylene, which I knew had the capability to be recycled. A major question I had to answer at the start was, "Just how much of this waste are we producing, and how frequently are we producing it?" This required me to go out into the plant and record the weight and volume produced for our plastic film. Using our lab on site, I used a small scale to measure the weight of five plastic …
