Labor Market Report: Creative Economy In Washington State, Samantha Smith
Labor Market Report: Creative Economy In Washington State, Samantha Smith
PPPA Paper Prize
This paper focuses on the creative economy in Washington State, related historical labor market trends, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on related job industries. The creative economy includes portions of the information and arts industries. Job markets for these industries faced significantly different effects during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite growing trends for governments and policymakers to focus on the creative economy, grouping the information and arts sectors within the definition of creative economy is not recommended given the disparate values placed on these industries.

A Session On The Inside: Lessons From The Legislature, Bailey Wambold
PPPA Paper Prize
Inspired by a drive to instigate widespread and environmentally-sustainable change, this paper explores the powers and processes shaping public policy in Washington State through a reflection of the legislative internship. A recounting of personal experiences and observations in light of knowledge gained during ten weeks of academic, civic, social, and emotional learning offers a ‘behind the scenes’ peek at the 2023 Legislative Session with the hope of informing future efforts to influence policy and practice. The reflection opens with a description of the Washington State Legislature, an overview of intern duties, and a summary of the academic resources used to …
Dirt Cheap Nutrition, Rain Delucia
Dirt Cheap Nutrition, Rain Delucia
Bucknell Farm
The aim of this project is to reach a range of people who are suffering from food insecurity. Food insecurity is a spectrum; people have varying access to not only food, but to related resources such as cooking equipment and knowledge. Food insecurity is a broad term since there are varying reasons as to why people cannot access food such as transportation, money, and access. In most cases food insecurity is a symptom of a much bigger issue known as poverty. The typical person struggling with food insecurity suffers from both mental and physical complications such as decline in academic …
Informal Caregivers’ Experiences Of Caring For Older Adults Diagnosed With Urinary Tract Infections, Novelett M. Stennett-James
Informal Caregivers’ Experiences Of Caring For Older Adults Diagnosed With Urinary Tract Infections, Novelett M. Stennett-James
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Informal caregivers’ experiences of caring for older adults diagnosed with a urinary tract infection (UTI) is a prevalent issue that affects adults as they age. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to understand informal caregivers’ experiences observing and reporting to doctors observable changes of behavior in older adults that were later linked to unconventional symptoms of potential UTIs. Attribution theory was used as the theoretical framework for this study. This qualitative study addressed the research question of informal caregivers’ experiences observing and reporting to doctors observed changes in older adults associated with unconventional UTI symptoms. Data were collected …
Examining Educator Burnout And Classroom Outcomes As Correlates To Teaching Pyramid Implementation, April N. Frazer
Examining Educator Burnout And Classroom Outcomes As Correlates To Teaching Pyramid Implementation, April N. Frazer
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
The Teaching Pyramid is a research-based socio-emotional framework created for implementation in early childhood education programs. It is designed to support children’s socio-emotional development and decrease persistent challenging behaviors. Challenging child behaviors have been linked to early educator stress. Job stressors in early childhood educators have been previously linked to educator burnout.
This study examined fidelity of implementation of the Teaching Pyramid framework as well as experience being trained and coached on the framework in 21 early childhood educators. It evaluated how these variables correlated with educator burnout, children’s socio-emotional development, and observed quality of care in nine Head Start …

Pilot Study: The Effects Of A Mountain Wilderness Experience On Combat Veteran Psychosocial Wellness, Elizabeth J. Vella Phd, Taylor Lyman, Taylor Lovering
Faculty Publications
The purpose of this quasi-experimental pilot study was to evaluate the efficacy of a 3.5day outdoor wilderness program (Huts for Vets, HFV) for reducing psychological distress, PTSD symptoms, and improving positive mood states. It was hypothesized that participation in the HFV program would predict improvements in psychosocial well-being in addition to reductions in PTSD symptomatology relative to a waiting-list control group. Participants included 51 adult veterans diagnosed with PTSD and/or some other combat-related disability (Mage = 36.8, SD = 8.19). The experimental group (n=32) participated in the HFV program, which included hiking and group discussions. Data collection via psychosocial scale …
Societal Factors Enabling Increased Rates Of Sexual Victimization Within Greek-Life, Erica Stroheker
Societal Factors Enabling Increased Rates Of Sexual Victimization Within Greek-Life, Erica Stroheker
Perspectives
Throughout this literature review, I will be discussing sexual victimization rates among students who are affiliated with Greek life. I will attempt to answer whether Greek affiliation correlates with higher sexual victimization rates among female students. I will additionally identify if and how college institutions enable sexual victimization rates. This literature review aims to identify a correlation between sexual victimization and Greek life. Along with using socialist feminism theory to understand sexual victimization, this literature review will also discuss terms such as token resistance, rape myth acceptance, and sexual scripts. In reviewing evidence from past studies and literature reviews, I …

Does Having Immigrant Parents Affect One’S Use Of Academic Resources?, Sophia Lucas
Does Having Immigrant Parents Affect One’S Use Of Academic Resources?, Sophia Lucas
Perspectives
Almost one-third of the U.S. student population consists of students with immigrant families. This study aimed to analyze whether there were differences in how students with immigrant parents and students without immigrant parents navigate the college system. This was done by specifically looking at parental nativity status (within the U.S. or not) and the use of academic resources on campus. It was performed through a convenience sample of a large North Eastern college and yielded a sample of 300 students. The study hypothesized that students who are first-generation-born were less likely to use academic resources. The majority of respondents were …

The Relationship Between Marijuana Policy And Prejudice Regarding Adult Black Americans, Caitlin Turner
The Relationship Between Marijuana Policy And Prejudice Regarding Adult Black Americans, Caitlin Turner
Perspectives
Marijuana policy has been a crucial debate for many years in America. Even with the legalization of marijuana in many states, Black people are still being arrested at an unjustified rate in contrast to white people. These differences have led to the overrepresentation of Black people incarcerated for this low-level crime as a direct result of the aftermath of the War on Drugs. This paper will analyze the effects of the overcriminalization of marijuana, more specifically among Black people. It will question the extent of marijuana policy on the outcomes of Black people versus white people and will discuss what …

Investigation Of The Organizational And Activational Effects Of Testosterone On Empathy, Samantha Urban, Rachael Arnold, Jess Dahm, Raul Rodriguez-Calvillo
Investigation Of The Organizational And Activational Effects Of Testosterone On Empathy, Samantha Urban, Rachael Arnold, Jess Dahm, Raul Rodriguez-Calvillo
Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
Empathy is integral to individual, relational, and cognitive health. Sex differences in empathy are prominent, yet investigation of the biological basis is lacking. Since men have higher testosterone levels than women on average, sex differences in empathic ability may be partially due to sex differences in testosterone. Testosterone has negatively correlated with empathy in men, but not women. More research is needed on how findings differ based on measuring organizational and activational effects of testosterone, with some studies showing prenatal testosterone exposure positively associated with affective empathy in women while others demonstrate heightened levels of activated testosterone reduced or impaired …
Exploration Into The Relationship Between Governmental Efficiency And Levels Of Individual Rights And Liberties, John M. Caskie
Exploration Into The Relationship Between Governmental Efficiency And Levels Of Individual Rights And Liberties, John M. Caskie
Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
There is a relatively common libertarian belief that the United States Madisonian system of government serves the interests of liberties in ways other than the separation of powers or its explicitly enumerated rights and liberties. This belief stands as a rebuttal to efforts geared towards increasing governmental efficiency by arguing that their current failure to produce, enact and enforce a legislative output great enough to please critics actually serves the greater interest of the American people by preventing tyranny.
In this study I will be testing whether governmental efficiency has a negative impact on the levels of individual liberties those …

Kia Corporation is an automobile manufacturer based in South Korea, who produces and sells vehicles with one of the most well known of their models being the Kia Soul. There are a number of factors that contribute to the Soul being a well known car but one of the biggest reasons is because of the infamous and out-of-the-box commercials that have been crafted in order to promote this style of car. This critique will encompass the contents of one commercial released in 2012 in an attempt to stimulate sales for this specific model of the Kia Soul. This advertisement is …
Does How Much You Work Matter?, Khalil Dabdoub Dabdoub, Jill Graham
Does How Much You Work Matter?, Khalil Dabdoub Dabdoub, Jill Graham
Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
Previous literature has suggested an inverted U relationship between hours worked and life satisfaction, with those who work more closely to 40 hours a week showing greater life satisfaction. Overtime work hours are associated with increased stress, fatigue,m and greater family-interference which can be detrimental to mental health. Furthermore, previous literature suggests that mental disorders are highly linked to life satisfaction. However, previous literature has focused on factors such as sex and specific occupations, with worker’s preference being . Therefore, we found a gap in the literature when investigating if specific countries who, on average, had longer work weeks had …

The Nashville Predators Social Media Audit, Sam Baranek, Connor Clouthier, Toniya Johnson, Mary Kate Reid, Micaela Trimble
Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
This report and presentation will deliver a comprehensive social media audit completed on the Nashville Predators, a national hockey team. In the end, it will show results of our group’s analysis of the communication strategies on the various platforms that the Nashville Predators use for their business and brand. While we already have prior knowledge and experience in social media, we plan to use the theories and principles to come to even better conclusions about the success of the Nashville Predators’ online presence.
The Nashville Predators are known for being a professional hockey team in the NHL. The Predator’s brand …
Measuring The Effect Of Negative Political Advertising On Voter Turnout, Will Sosna
Measuring The Effect Of Negative Political Advertising On Voter Turnout, Will Sosna
Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
Many scholars have explored the effects of negative political advertising on voter turnout, some arguing that it suppresses turnout, others that it stimulates it. These two views represent the demobilization and stimulation hypotheses, respectively. A third school argues no meaningful relationship exists between the two variables. Despite extensive coverage in the literature, a newer contribution is needed to accurately assess the issue within a more modern context. I utilize data from the 2020 ANES Time Series Study to determine the extent to which exposure to negative political advertising affects voter turnout. I find the effect is slightly depressive, although minimal …

The Chinese economy’s meteoric rise has caused alarm in the West. An article published online on the CNN website states, “China’s rapid technological advances have also made it a strategic threat to the United States and its allies. It’s steadily pushing American rivals out of long-held leadership positions in sectors ranging from 5G technology to artificial intelligence.” This, in truth, is the nature of the “threat” perceived by politicians in the West. It was also pointed out that “Until recently, some economists were predicting that China would become the world’s biggest economy by 2030, unseating the United States.” If China …

Up In Smoke: Wildfires And Economic Growth, Nicholas Silvis
Gettysburg Economic Review
Do wildfires have a causal effect on economic development? Using satellite data, I analyze every country's exposure to wildfire exposure from 1982-2018. I use synthetic controls to model the impact of wildfire exposure on GDP per capita having controlled for population density, trade, agriculture, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), and polity score. I find that the impacts of wildfires are fairly localized, impacting parts of Africa that both experience high numbers of wildfires and are developing.
The Effect Of Remote Work On Firm Level Productivity, Katherine Fullowan
The Effect Of Remote Work On Firm Level Productivity, Katherine Fullowan
Gettysburg Economic Review
This paper investigates the impact of remote work on firm-level productivity. To observe this trend, we develop a theoretical model to understand how an economy performs. We consider the economy as a collection of firms in an attempt to maximize profit. By observing a firms profit function, we are able to derive their productivity by maximizing a representative firm’s profit function. For simplicity purposes, this study treats labor as the only factor of production to focus solely on how changes in the number of remote workers impact productivity. We ultimately find that productivity increases when the number of remote workers …
Educational Attainment: An Analysis Of Teenage Parenthood And Dropout Prevention Programs, Megan Mccook
Educational Attainment: An Analysis Of Teenage Parenthood And Dropout Prevention Programs, Megan Mccook
Gettysburg Economic Review
This paper explores how teenage parenthood affects students’ high school education attainment, and evaluates the effectiveness of dropout prevention programs that offer on-site childcare. I use data from the High School Longitudinal Study (2009), collected by the National Center for Educational Statistics through the US Department of Education. These data combine survey responses from students, their parents, and school staff. Using school fixed effects and instrumental variable estimation I evaluate the impact of teenage parenthood on the probability of dropout. Female students with a child have, on average, 13.8 percentage points higher likelihood of dropping out of high school. The …
Intrinsic Unrealism: The Ineffectiveness Of Neoclassical Economic Models, Robert N. Meyer
Intrinsic Unrealism: The Ineffectiveness Of Neoclassical Economic Models, Robert N. Meyer
Gettysburg Economic Review
The idea of equilibrium and the usefulness of the neoclassical models that employ it are questionable due to the unrealistic built-in assumptions that they utilize, which have androcentric biases and fail to consider the open-endedness of human choice. This essay will replace the idea that neoclassical economic models are effective and that realism does not matter in the field of economics. It will rely on historical and contemporary sources in the areas of Philosophy, Sociology, Politics, and of course, Economics to explain why these unrealistic and androcentric assumptions nullify the usefulness of the neoclassical models that employ them. The essay …
Impact Of Charging Infrastructure On Electric Vehicle Sales: An Analysis From Counties In 13 Us States, Shubh N. Parekh
Impact Of Charging Infrastructure On Electric Vehicle Sales: An Analysis From Counties In 13 Us States, Shubh N. Parekh
Gettysburg Economic Review
Adoption of battery electric vehicles (BEVs), and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), has become a priority for the government because of the constant threat of climate change. Over the years, government monetary incentives like tax credits, tax rebates, and other monetary subsidies are the leading way to increase electric vehicle sales in the United States. While these incentives are necessary to combat the high costs of electric vehicles (EVs), there hasn’t been too much attention given to combat range anxiety. Since EVs are run on lithium-ion batteries, there is a limited range for different EVs, with the maximum being around …

Delineating A Stream Network At Gale Crater, Mars, On Arcgis Pro: A Geographic Information Systems Approach, Elpidio Guzman De La Cruz
West Chester University Master’s Theses
The northwestern region of the Gale crater experienced flooding in the past. Delineation of stream networks for the northwestern region of Gale Crater, Mars employing geographic information systems (GIS) techniques is applied. The stream network produced by the algorithm in the study traverses the clay unit in Gediz Vallis, and visual HiRISE imagery analysis correlates with a topologic cross section of an inverted river channel of 750 meters wide and 90 meters deep. HiRISE imagery analysis further confirms a sulfate and clay stratigraphic unit in a stream 125 meters wide and 25 meters deep. Lastly, data smoothing procedures in the …
Addiction And Liberty, Matthew B. Lawrence
Addiction And Liberty, Matthew B. Lawrence
Faculty Articles
This Article explores the interaction between addiction and liberty and identifies a firm legal basis for recognition of a fundamental constitutional right to freedom from addiction. Government interferes with freedom from addiction when it causes addiction or restricts addiction treatment, and government may protect freedom from addiction through legislation empowering individuals against private actors’ efforts to addict them without their consent. This Article motivates and tests the boundaries of this right through case studies of emergent threats to liberty made possible or exacerbated by new technologies and scientific understandings. These include certain state lottery programs, addiction treatment restrictions, and smartphone …
Climate Security Insights From The Covid-19 Response, Mark P. Nevitt
Climate Security Insights From The Covid-19 Response, Mark P. Nevitt
Faculty Articles
The climate change crisis and COVID-19 crisis are both complex collective action problems. Neither the coronavirus nor greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions respect political borders. Both impose an opportunity cost that penalizes inaction. They are also increasingly understood as nontraditional, novel security threats. Indeed, COVID-19’s human cost is staggering, with American lives lost vastly exceeding those lost in recent armed conflicts. And climate change is both a threat accelerant and a catalyst for conflict—a characterization reinforced in several climate-security reports. To counter COVID-19, the President embraced martial language, stating that he will employ a “wartime footing” to “defeat the virus.” Perhaps …
