Four Fundamental Questions To Evaluate Land Change Models With An Illustration Of A Cellular Automata–Markov Model, Cláudia M. Viana, Robert Gilmore Pontius, Jorge Rocha

Geography

Numerous models exist for users to simulate land change to communicate with an audience concerning future land change. This article raises four fundamental questions to help model users decide whether to use any model: (1) Can the user understand the model? (2) Can the audience understand the model? (3) Can the user control the model? (4) Does the model address the goals of the specific application? This article applies these questions to the popular cellular automata–Markov (CA–Markov) model as IDRISI’s CA–Markov module expresses. Sensitivity analysis examines 120 ways to set the module’s parameters. Verification compares the module’s behavior to the …

Revisiting The Blue Earth Oneota Taxon, Samuel Marcucci

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Clark Dobbs’ 1984 dissertation on Blue Earth Oneota settlement patterns is often the go-to treatment for the Blue Earth taxon. Since the publication of his work, new methods of archeological research have been employed within the field and new data have been uncovered from both Blue Earth sites in Minnesota and Oneota sites throughout the Midwest. This thesis attempts to ask if the modern archeology of Blue Earth Oneota is still comprehended by Dobbs’ 1984 publication. Feature analysis of material recovered from refuse pit features during the 2012 excavation at the Vosburg site (21FA02) was utilized in this research along …

The purpose of this study is to compare decomposition of animal samples in plowed and unplowed soils. To accomplish this, two sets of three pig (Sus domesticus) ham hocks were buried in soil in early May of 2023, one set in a highly disturbed agricultural field and the other set in an undisturbed forested area. Soybeans were planted in the agricultural field within a week. The samples remained buried until excavated in October 2023 after harvest to compare the extent of decomposition and any other changes that occurred to the surrounding soil. Additionally, the soil at each site was described …

The Association Of Blood Glucose With The Daily Self-Regulation Of Everyday Life Stress In Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes, Laura Bethany Cohen Jan 2023

The Association Of Blood Glucose With The Daily Self-Regulation Of Everyday Life Stress In Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes, Laura Bethany Cohen

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

Adolescents with type 1 diabetes must learn to balance the complexities of managing a chronic disease with managing non-disease-related experiences in their daily life that also contribute to stress. For example, in addition to diabetes management, these adolescents must also balance ongoing demands from everyday life stressors including school, social interactions, and home and family life. However, it remains unclear if daily diabetes management might contribute to experiences of everyday life stress. The present study assessed the association between daily everyday life stress and blood glucose regulation in adolescents with type 1 diabetes using both linear and nonlinear models. Thirty-nine …

Distinguishing Different Types Of Childhood Maltreatment On Resting-State Connectivity Networks During Emerging Adulthood, Zoe Morris Feldman Brier Jan 2023

Distinguishing Different Types Of Childhood Maltreatment On Resting-State Connectivity Networks During Emerging Adulthood, Zoe Morris Feldman Brier

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

Childhood maltreatment is a major public health concern and is associated with both psychological and brain changes in adulthood. Conceptualization of childhood maltreatment can be categorized along two axes, threat and deprivation, each of which can be associated with varying outcomes of psychopathology and brain changes. The brain is organized into broad connectivity networks, including the Salience Network (SN), the Default-Mode Network (DMN), and the Central Executive Network (CEN). Prior work has examined the relationship between these networks and psychopathology associated with childhood maltreatment, such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD).

This study assessed the differences …

The Development And Pilot Of A Broadband Caregiver-Informant Measure Of Autobiographical Memory, Kathryn Fagan Jan 2023

The Development And Pilot Of A Broadband Caregiver-Informant Measure Of Autobiographical Memory, Kathryn Fagan

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

Autobiographical memory (ABM) is memory of the self. It is pervasive in our daily lives and subserves a range of social cognitive functions such as theory of mind (i.e., the capacity to understand and attribute mental states), self-concept, personal narrative development, and socio-cultural learning. Disruption of ABM can have enduring and detrimental developmental consequences which underscores the importance of early identification for the purpose of treatment planning. Currently, no normative measures exist to assess children’s ABM in a standardized and content-valid way. The purpose of this study was to complete the first steps in the development of a clinically useful …

An Ill-Suited Memorial? Nazi Atrocities In Publications On The American Right, 1930-1985, Sandor Farkas Jan 2023

An Ill-Suited Memorial? Nazi Atrocities In Publications On The American Right, 1930-1985, Sandor Farkas

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

From 1930 to 1985, reactions to Nazi atrocities in the Saturday Evening Post, Wall Street Journal, and National Review represent a sampling of the American political right’s understanding, memory, and use of the Holocaust. A touchstone for evil in American culture and politics, few scholarly works have explored the origins of the Holocaust’s outsized role in American political discourse, and fewer have seriously considered the American right’s role in this evolution. Nazi atrocities assumed their role in American politics because the novelty of Nazi crimes against Jews and their post-war consequences received persistent media attention. On the American political right, …

Get Rich And Die Trying: Capitalism, Its Repetitions, And The Financial Plot, Richard Chapman Matis Jan 2023

Get Rich And Die Trying: Capitalism, Its Repetitions, And The Financial Plot, Richard Chapman Matis

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

Most people want to be rich, and the reasons why usually do not require exposition. Despite gospel warnings about the difficulties of the wealthy entering paradise, multitudes clamor for the possibility of facing this dilemma firsthand. Tales from antiquity and mythologies utilize recognizable archetypes such as the profligate spender or stubborn miser that are still employed as rote moral instruction today. In one sense, exchangeability between positions of rich and poor is a staple of social storytelling because of its universal mutual intelligibility across time and place. Modern readers can likely identify descriptors and coding of rich and poor, despite …

Adaptation Rationales And Benefits: A Foundation For Understanding Adaptation Impact, Edward R. Carr, Johanna Nalau Jan 2023

Adaptation Rationales And Benefits: A Foundation For Understanding Adaptation Impact, Edward R. Carr, Johanna Nalau

Geography

Efforts to achieve coordinated, effective, and impactful adaptation outcomes are complicated by factors ranging from the local specificity of adaptation needs to the challenges of politics and prioritization that drive funding decisions. However, these and other challenges are perpetuated and exacerbated by poorly constructed, often implicit, and generally institution- or context-specific impact pathways connecting policy/institutional priorities through their materialization in specific actions to their intended outcomes. We call these impact pathways adaptation rationales, as they represent the logic of an adaptation action. The implicit nature of most current adaptation rationales makes it difficult to identify and test the accuracy and …

Situational Analysis And Urban Theory, Mark Davidson Jan 2023

Situational Analysis And Urban Theory, Mark Davidson

Geography

Urban geographers have been pursuing divergent theoretical projects. Some have pushed urban theory to become ageographical, the goal being to search out and explain of a globally omnipotent urbanization process. Others have moved in a different direction, seeking to detail how singular constellations of processes produce only particular urban places. This theoretical divergence has led some to question whether middle-range urban theories continue to have purchase today. This paper seeks to contribute to this attempt to rekindle an interest in middle-range urban theory by examining the relevance of Karl Popper’s situational analysis to how we understand contemporary urbanization. © The …

A Qualitative Functional Analysis Of Academic Procrastination Among Irish Undergraduate Students, Gráinne Carthy Jan 2023

A Qualitative Functional Analysis Of Academic Procrastination Among Irish Undergraduate Students, Gráinne Carthy

Masters

Academic procrastination involves the needless postponement of academic tasks at the expense of one’s academic goals. Informed by the principles of Acceptance Commitment Therapy, this study explored students’ experiences of academic procrastination in an Irish undergraduate sample. Over two studies, semi structured interviews were used to explore the common scenarios in which students tended to procrastinate, and also the scenarios which by contrast tended to motivate relatively immediate academic engagement. Study 1 involved interviewing twelve participants who had been recruited from online lectures. After noting the potential for self-selection bias in this recruitment strategy, study 2 specifically recruited seven participants …

Variable- And Person-Centered Approaches To Examining Construct-Relevant Multidimensionality In Writing Self-Efficacy, Morgan Les Debusk-Lane, Sharon Zumbrunn, Christine Lee Bae, Michael D. Broda, Roger Bruning, Ashlee L. Sjogren

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

Self-efficacy is an essential component of students’ motivation and success in writing. There have been great advancements in our theoretical understanding of writing self-efficacy over the past 40 years; however, there is a gap in how we empirically model the multidimensionality of writing self-efficacy. The purpose of the present study was to examine the multidimensionality of writing selfefficacy, and present validity evidence for the adapted Self-Efficacy for Writing Scale (SEWS) through a series of measurement model comparisons and person-centered approaches. Using a sample of 1,466 8th–10th graders, results showed that a bifactor exploratory structural equation model best represented the data, …

Sustainability and Social Justice

A key element of risk assessment is accounting for the full range of variability in response to environmental exposures. Default dose-response methods typically assume a 10-fold difference in response to chemical exposures between average (healthy) and susceptible humans, despite evidence of wider variability. Experts and authoritative bodies support using advanced techniques to better account for human variability due to factors such as in utero or early life exposure and exposure to multiple environmental, social, and economic stressors. This review describes: 1) sources of human variability and susceptibility in dose-response assessment, 2) existing US frameworks for addressing response variability in risk …

Sustainability and Social Justice

The manufacture and production of industrial chemicals continues to increase, with hundreds of thousands of chemicals and chemical mixtures used worldwide, leading to widespread population exposures and resultant health impacts. Low-wealth communities and communities of color often bear disproportionate burdens of exposure and impact; all compounded by regulatory delays to the detriment of public health. Multiple authoritative bodies and scientific consensus groups have called for actions to prevent harmful exposures via improved policy approaches. We worked across multiple disciplines to develop consensus recommendations for health-protective, scientific approaches to reduce harmful chemical exposures, which can be applied to current US policies …

At Home In The Field, In The Field At Home? Reflections On Power And Fieldwork In Familiar Settings, Arda Bilgen, Anita Fabos Jan 2023

At Home In The Field, In The Field At Home? Reflections On Power And Fieldwork In Familiar Settings, Arda Bilgen, Anita Fabos

Sustainability and Social Justice

Critical epistemologies and methodologies have over time challenged the static and mono-dimensional approaches to fieldwork, allowing researchers to contemplate and conduct their research in spaces of in-betweenness. Despite this important shift, the essentialist idea that both ‘the field’ and ‘home’ in a fieldwork setting must be actual places persists. In this article, we challenge the conceptualization and operationalization of ‘home’ not only as the juxtaposition to ‘the field’, but also as the embodiment of a place in a specific temporality. We argue that the postulation of ‘home’ as a constant disregards the non-predetermined and unpredictable nature of fieldwork relationships that …
