FIMS Publications

Public libraries are trusted community hubs that foster connections with individuals of different socioeconomic statuses; ages; ethnic, linguistic, religious, and cultural backgrounds; and sexual and gender identities. Located in diverse settings, library branches offer resources and programs that meet the specific needs of their communities who are navigating the effects of our increasingly asocial society. Libraries have been shown to cater to individuals contending with higher levels of social isolation and loneliness, as well as increased rates of mental illnesses and antisocial behaviours. The shift to online environments during COVID-19 has exacerbated feelings of disconnection. During these times of change, …

Fertility Counseling For Couples, Brennan Peterson, Kristy Koser Nov 2022

Fertility Counseling For Couples, Brennan Peterson, Kristy Koser

Marriage and Family Therapy Faculty Books and Book Chapters

This chapter addresses the role, and importance, of individual counseling and psychotherapy in providing psychological assistance and support to patients who are struggling with infertility and loss. Depression and anxiety are the two most frequent emotional sequelae of the infertility experience. The chapter therefore speaks not only to what factors contribute to making fertility counselors effective in their work, but also addresses specific treatment approaches that can yield positive outcomes in working with this unique population. These approaches include psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive–behavioral therapy (including dialectical behavior therapy and trauma-focused therapy), and supportive counseling. A brief history and description of each …

Climate Change Impacts On Groundwater In Mapc Communities, Jayne F. Knott, Paul Kirshen, Ellen Douglas Nov 2022

Climate Change Impacts On Groundwater In Mapc Communities, Jayne F. Knott, Paul Kirshen, Ellen Douglas

School for the Environment Publications

Groundwater is important for human health and the environment but has often been overlooked in the development of climate change adaptation strategies. This is because groundwater is rarely visible, and because changes in groundwater levels are not as dramatic as extreme flooding events, coastal storms, and storm surge. The importance of groundwater for drinking water, natural resources, and streamflow is well documented. Groundwater levels are also important considerations in the design of pavements, underground infrastructure, foundations, on-site wastewater treatment systems, and in the remediation of hazardous waste disposal areas. Groundwater is especially important in the wet northeast, where groundwater levels …

Festivals And The Covid-19 Pandemic: Creative Responses, Threats And Opportunities, Bernadette Quinn Dr. Nov 2022

Festivals And The Covid-19 Pandemic: Creative Responses, Threats And Opportunities, Bernadette Quinn Dr.

Case Studies

The COVID 19 pandemic severely disrupted the workings of the festival and event sector in Ireland during 2020 and into 2021 as government regulations prohibited gatherings of people, and public health advice advocated social distancing. Many festivals and events were forced to cancel or postpone their plans, but others were able to devise a variety of creative responses to sustain their activities throughout the pandemic. This case study examines how festivals adapted by embracing digital technologies. It goes on to discuss the challenges faced by the sector in doing so, as well as the opportunities that were generated.

Manual & Guide

Limited Cognitive Ability May Reduce Snap Participation Among Older Adults, Colleen Heflin, Dongmei Zuo, Gabriella Alphonso Nov 2022

Limited Cognitive Ability May Reduce Snap Participation Among Older Adults, Colleen Heflin, Dongmei Zuo, Gabriella Alphonso

Population Health Research Brief Series

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is the largest food and nutrition assistance program in the U.S. For older adults currently on SNAP, meeting administrative requirements to remain on SNAP is difficult due to short recertification time frames, a lack of social support, and cognitive impairment. This brief summarizes results of a recent study examining the impact of cognitive decline on SNAP participation among adults aged 60 yrs. and older. Findings demonstrate that cognitive decline and living alone are associated with reduced SNAP participation, with older females being the most affected.

Inspiring Asian American Awareness Through Archival Research: A Gonzaga Case Study, Shyam Sriram, Shayna Pekala, Stephanie Plowman Nov 2022

Inspiring Asian American Awareness Through Archival Research: A Gonzaga Case Study, Shyam Sriram, Shayna Pekala, Stephanie Plowman

Foley Library Scholarship

The recent rise in anti-Asian violence in the United States necessitates urgent and immediate scholarly engagement and classroom interventions. The fact that Illinois and New Jersey are the only two states to make Asian Pacific American history a mandatory part of public school curricula—and only did so in 2022—should trouble anyone who believes in equitable representation and education.Drawing on the expertise of two librarians and one political science professor, we created an assignment in the spring 2022 semester—for the first “Asian American Politics” seminar ever offered at Gonzaga University—that combined physical and digital resources for a new kind of archival …

The Proximal Zone Of Intercultural Development (Pzid), Rachid Oulahal Nov 2022

The Proximal Zone Of Intercultural Development (Pzid), Rachid Oulahal

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

This article presents results from a comparative analysis of intercultural experiences between French and Singaporean participants. A set of questions was proposed online in order to identify temporalities of an intercultural experience (early and late interculturation) as well as the level of this experience (intrapsychic, intersubjective and intergroup interculturation). Our sample consists of 246 participants (144 in France and 102 in Singapore). France and Singapore were chosen as research fields because of their difference in terms of cultural difference management: a universalist cultural model for France and a pluralist cultural model for Singapore.

A quantitative analysis allows us to identify …

Social Capital And Educational Well-Being: A Systematic Review (2010-2022), Pui Yiu Ho

SOC 605 Comparative Social Policy Research Project - Student Works

Social capital is evidenced as beneficial to educational achievements and it’s believed as important for students. Recent research of social capital and education moves beyond illustrating the effects of social capital on education achievements to a more comprehensive interrelationship between social capital and different aspects in development of students. To delineate the association between social capital and education in different aspects, this paper aims to systematically review quantitative studies examining the association between social capital and educational well-being. Three questions are of concern here. Question 1: Is there association relationship between social capital and educational well-being? Question 2: …

Architectural Engineering

University campuses have a long history of enriching the social, cultural, and economic value of societies. Worldwide, there is a rising demand for the integration of new approaches into the planning and design of university buildings to further improve their quality. According to the literature, many approaches needed to be considered while designing university buildings that can enhance students’ performance. Biophilic design is known to have enhancing levels of interaction, and interaction patterns, enhancing health and wellbeing in terms of physiological, psychological, cognitive, and social/ spiritual benefits, while rigorous scientific evidence that supports such claims is rare. Many researchers have …

Toyota Motors South Africa (Pty) Ltd V Numsa Obo Njini And Others (D 692/19 [2022] Zalcd 12 (14 July 2022), Stephen Nkosi

SAIPAR Case Review

This was an application in terms of s 145 of the Labour Relations Act 66 of 1966. Toyota sought to have the decision of the CCMA, ordering the re-instatement of Mr Lungile Njini - then an employee of Toyota for 17 years – be set aside, and that his dismissal be declared fair. The case represents an interesting interplay between the quest for discipline and productivity in the workplace and the right to exercise one’s constitutional right to culture as provided for in s 30 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa Act. This note is divided into …

Adjustment Of Refugees In Greece As A Social Identity Process: A Longitudinal Study, Angelos Panagiotopoulos, Irene Giovanetti, Vassilis Pavlopoulos Nov 2022

Adjustment Of Refugees In Greece As A Social Identity Process: A Longitudinal Study, Angelos Panagiotopoulos, Irene Giovanetti, Vassilis Pavlopoulos

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Many refugees moving into Greece and other European countries often struggle to adjust to their new life. Over and above other factors, social isolation seems to be a major contributor in their poor adjustment outcomes, yet the underlying psychological mechanisms of their links are not well understood. Based on the Social Identity Model of Identity Change, we conceptualized refugees’ adjustment as a major life transition that depends on (i) the maintenance of existing pre-migratory group memberships (social identity continuity pathway), (ii) the development of new post-migratory social identities (social identity gain pathway), and (iii) the perceived compatibility between pre- and …

Testing Concurrent Validity And Group-Differences Of A Four-Dimensional Assessment Of Attitudes Toward Mutual Acculturation, Petra Sidler Nov 2022

Testing Concurrent Validity And Group-Differences Of A Four-Dimensional Assessment Of Attitudes Toward Mutual Acculturation, Petra Sidler

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Acculturation attitudes commonly focus on minority and majority attitudes toward minority acculturation. However, because acculturation is a mutual process, not only are members of minority or migrant groups expected to experience acculturation, but members of the majority also are. In this study, I assessed the attitudes of 375 minority and majority students (Mage = 12.67 years, SD = 0.69, range 11–15, 46% female) in Swiss secondary schools toward (a) migration background students’ heritage culture maintenance and (b) dominant culture adoption, (c) majority students’ acquisition of cultural knowledge, and (d) schools’ endorsement of intercultural contact. This study extends the …

Issue Of Multicultural People In Globalizing Japan: (Cultural) Identity, Mental Health And “Ibasho”, Kazuyo Suzuki, Michiko Ishibashi, Yumi Suzuki, Fumiteru Nitta

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

The number of multicultural people has increased over many years with the globalization of the world economy. Japan is no exception. Ibasho is a Japanese unique concept and means one’s place where one feels secure, comfortable, and accepted. There are very few studies on ibasho among people with multicultural backgrounds. Suzuki (2018) refers to relationships among identity/cultural identity formation, mental health (including subjective well-being) and ibasho. In this paper, we examined the relationship among mental health, identity and ibasho with a focus on ibasho in the case of two groups of people with multicultural backgrounds: International students (N = 105) …

The study assesses the variations in perspectives toward mental illness in the Quebec general population. The study sampled 293 individuals living within the province of Quebec, targeting a culturally diverse sample. They were sampled through a small liberal arts university and community associations. The study used a quantitative self-report approach comprising questions regarding cultural background (e.g., ethnicity) and personal factors (e.g., education level) as well as perspectives, knowledge, and behaviors towards mental illness. Significant differences in perspectives towards mental illness emerged for cultural background based on time spent in Canada, for knowledge (greater knowledge associated with more positive perspectives towards …

A community garden is a great way of expanding the library's service beyond its four walls and promoting patron collaboration. The library garden was imagined with the purpose of teaching, demonstrating, donating and involving families in growing food and experiencing the immense satisfaction derived from harvesting home-grown produce. Library gardens are a natural setting for promoting nutritional literacy and hands-on environmental learning. The North Cobb Regional Library Garden reflects Cobb County Public Library's mission of being a vital resource center providing services to enrich people's lives.

Open Access Literature In Libraries: Principles And Practices, Karen Brunsting, Caitlin Harrington, Rachel E. Scott

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

Open Access has evolved into the most complex challenge of the scholarly communication landscape and something libraries grapple with on a regular basis. But although librarians hold increasingly positive perceptions about OA, including its richness of unique content and immediacy of access, many lack the understanding, training, documentation, and knowledge of best practices that would allow them to engage with it confidently. This book helps to fill that gap, using a holistic approach that walks readers through the steps of integrating OA resources into library collections and supporting OA initiatives irrespective of budget, institution type, collection size, and staffing. Explaining …

Strategies For Financing Efficiency In District Energy Systems, Andrew R. Thomas, Jack Kunath, Mark Henning Nov 2022

Strategies For Financing Efficiency In District Energy Systems, Andrew R. Thomas, Jack Kunath, Mark Henning

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

Efforts to educate district energy users about energy efficiency have lagged those for electricity users. CSU surveyed district energy users in Cleveland, Ohio to ascertain their knowledge of and interest in energy efficiency programs. Most end users have a general knowledge about the sorts of technologies that are available, however do not understand their value, nor how to go about getting efficiency financed. The survey identified levels of interest that exist for adoption for various energy efficiency strategies as well as the preferred strategies for financing. It also identified where the most education is needed to create interest in adopting …

Barriers To The Delivery Of Teen Dating Violence Programs In Urban School And After-School Settings Serving Mexican-Heritage Youth, Heidi Adams Rueda, Lela Rankin Williams, Abigail Vera

Social Work Faculty Publications

Teen dating violence (TDV) is increasingly recognized as a national health priority, impacting overall well-being and school success. However, there are overlooked barriers to TDV program delivery in schools and youth-serving organizations and these are ideal settings to reach youth universally. In this study, we conducted 10 focus groups with school (e.g., administrators, social workers, nurses) and after-school personnel regarding barriers to TDV programming within a large urban community serving predominantly Mexican-heritage youth. Findings offer practice-driven considerations for the implementation of programs within urban communities. These include attention to limited resources, inhibitive and non-existent policies, competing demands, a lack of …
