According to Liberty Mutual’s 2021 Workplace Safety Index, it was estimated that employers paid more than $1 billion per week in direct workers’ compensation costs for disabling, non-fatal workplace injuries in 2018 (2021 workplace, 2021). Accordingly, organizations frequently engage in safety practices in the hopes of reducing these financial and human costs. The aim of this study was to examine whether performing safety observations reduced the likelihood of adverse outcomes. A safety observation refers to a checklist of behaviors deemed “safe” that should be conducted to help decrease or completely eliminate a safety incident. A safety incident is an event …

Perceived Engagement In Flexible Work Arrangements, Emma Vosika Oct 2022

Perceived Engagement In Flexible Work Arrangements, Emma Vosika

River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference

Early in the pandemic, employees transitioned to remote work to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Though social distancing and other coronavirus related mandates have begun to subside, some employers are continuing to allow their employees flexibility in their work arrangements. This continued flexibility appears to be the “new normal” of how we work (Weideman & Hofmeyr, 2020). As a result, the question arises as to whether flexible workers feel engaged and connected to their organizations. To illustrate perceived engagement in flexible work arrangements, a sample of 258 participants was recruited through social media and student participation system SONA. Examples of …

Signal Cost And Value Alignment In Organizational Sustainability Messaging To New Hires, Mackenzie Law, Ellise Vangilder, Kaitlyn Miller, Mariana Solanilla, Luke Vavricka, Amanda Lillie, Jack Carson, Jim Westerman

River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference

Introduction As companies continue to integrate sustainable initiatives as a strategic focus, their communications to new hires must adapt accordingly. Orientation programs represent an opportunity to inform new hires about the company’s sustainability values, but factors influencing the impact of sustainability messaging on new-hire perceptions remain unexplored. It is important for organizations to send signals to their new hires which are perceived as credible, meaningful, and genuine. However, the framing of sustainability orientation messages may combine with new-hire individual differences to influence these perceptions. We draw from signaling theory and value congruence research in HR to consider the potential impact …

Abstract Introduction Among one of the most unemployed majors, psychology bachelors degree students tend to find difficulty in finding employment opportunities that match their skills after graduation, despite their mastery of many knowledge, skill, and abilities (KSAOs) (Burning Glass Technologies, 2018; The Ladders, 2019; Halonen & Dunn, 2017). As businesses continue facing critical issues in the workplace, this begs the question: How can students with an undergraduate psychology degree resolve the most pressing issues within the world of business? This study aims to answer this question by understanding how KSAOs gained from a psychology curriculum align with addressing industry problems. …

Exploring The Role Of Emotional Stability And Remote Work As Resources In Detaching From Work, Brittany N. Ikner, Kristen Jennings Black Oct 2022

Exploring The Role Of Emotional Stability And Remote Work As Resources In Detaching From Work, Brittany N. Ikner, Kristen Jennings Black

River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference

The sizable increase in remote jobs within the last two years has led researchers to question how remote and in-person workers recover differently and what organizations can do to best facilitate their recovery from work. Yet, few empirical studies identify which individual and situational characteristics assist or inhibit recovery from work. Using Sonnentag and Fritz’s (2015) stressor-detachment model as theoretical framework, the proposed study investigates attentional resources (i.e., work location) and personal resources (i.e., emotional stability) that moderate the relationship of job stressors and well-being which is mediated by psychological detachment from work during non-work hours. Specifically, one’s levels of …

Exploring The Effects Of Financial Strain On Organizational Commitment And Occupational Commitment, Paris Jade Wright, Kristen J. Black Oct 2022

Exploring The Effects Of Financial Strain On Organizational Commitment And Occupational Commitment, Paris Jade Wright, Kristen J. Black

River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference

Financial strain is defined as an individual’s perception of economic stress and/or lack of resources (Adams et al., 2016). Although it has been linked to a multitude of negative well-being outcomes (Son & Wilson, 2015), there is little research regarding its impact on work-related attitudes, including organizational and occupational commitment. Several studies have found that financially-related variables, such as income, pay satisfaction, and extrinsic organizational rewards are positively related to organizational commitment (Cohen and Lowenberg, 1990; Mathieu and Zajac, 1990; Malhotra et al., 2007). Though occupational commitment and organizational commitment tend to be positively related (Lee et al., 2000), less …

Investigating The Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program's Impact On Public Service Employees, Karli Guice, Skylar Oney, Malissa Clark

River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference

The Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program has garnered attention in the media in recent months, primarily in reaction to recent program reforms. Public service employees have struggled to navigate the PSLF program since its formation in 2007, which is complex, tedious, and time consuming. While some relief has been granted, many more face uncertainty as to whether or when their loans will be forgiven. Coupled with the fact that many individuals feel shame and stigma for having loans in the first place and for seeking loan forgiveness, the PSLF process can take a negative toll on individuals and in …

Stress And Eating Behaviors, Britney J. Donovan, Alexander T. Jackson, James P. Loveless, Andrea C. Meggison

River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference

Studies pertaining to obesity, stress, and their impact on organizations are plentiful. Further, there is an abundance of research surrounding stress at work and eating behaviors. However, studies regarding work stress and fasting are absent. Because of this, our study aims to examine the relationship between stress, fasting behaviors, and interoception. Interoception is the perception of physical (body) sensations, such as hunger. We argue that interoceptive awareness will mediate the positive relationships between stress and fasting behavior. We argue that stress fasting behaviors are likely to occur during periods of high stress, such as balancing work and midterm exams. Therefore, …

Validating A Picture-Based Values Measure Across Three Studies, Jingyi Li, Lauren E. Postier, Kendall M. Mcgoey, Peter D. Cook

River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference

While the importance of congruence between personal and organizational values to employees and organizations has been well established in the academic literature, existing values measures have shortcomings in applied settings. We have developed the Picture-Based Values Measure (PBVM) to measure Schwartz’s 19 refined basic individual values, resist faking, avoid construct contamination, and show cross-cultural relevance. In this research proposal, we intend to establish the psychometric properties of the PBVM across three studies. In Study 1, to examine convergent validity, 300 working adults will take both the PBVM and Revised Portrait Value Questionnaire (PVQ-RR) via Prolific. To examine discriminant validity, participants …

Dismantling Institutional Whiteness: Emerging Forms Of Leadership In Higher Education, M. Cristina Alcalde, Mangala Subramaniam

Navigating Careers in Higher Education Series

Dismantling Institutional Whiteness: Emerging Forms of Leadership in Higher Education focuses on the experiences of women of color in leadership roles in higher education. Top roles historically have gone to white men, and leadership has not reflected the range of identities and people who make up higher education. Why? And why does this problem continue to this day? Most importantly, what can be done to bring about meaningful change?

Dismantling Institutional Whiteness gathers a range of first-person narratives from women of color and examines the challenges they face not only at a systemic level, but also at a deeply personal …

(Un)Contained Breasts: A Phenomenological Analysis Of Flesh, Femininity And Feelings, Brittany Davey Oct 2022

(Un)Contained Breasts: A Phenomenological Analysis Of Flesh, Femininity And Feelings, Brittany Davey

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis offers an original examination of the affective relations between bodies, clothing, and space by examining women’s experiences and feelings towards their breasts and wearing a bra in public. Exploring participants' contained and uncontained experiences with their breasts provided an opportunity to interrogate how heteropatriarchy requires a fashioning or containing of both feelings and flesh in public. Drawing on feminist and queer methodologies including ‘dirty participation’ and autoethnography, I report on insights gathered from twelve walking interviews conducted in Edmonton in the summer of 2019. Walking interviews included participants navigating their everyday geographies twice: once while wearing a bra …

Reinventing Child Labour: A Contemporary Analysis Of Children's Participation In The Digital Labour Economy, Bayan Kojok Oct 2022

Reinventing Child Labour: A Contemporary Analysis Of Children's Participation In The Digital Labour Economy, Bayan Kojok

Major Papers

This major research paper explores the historical shifts in labour and childhood, highlighting children’s ongoing implication in the capitalist market. My focus is influencer marketing, the newest form of digital work. The onset of social media and the introduction of the “influencer” is a cultural and political-economic shift that has expanded the definition of labour, whether this form of labour is widely recognized or not. The Instamom has emerged from this redefinition of labour; these individuals have curated influencer status by advertising their life as a mom on social media, particularly Instagram. This becomes problematic as children are inherently involved …

Client-Centered Practice When Professional And Social Power Are Uncoupled: The Experiences Of Therapists From Marginalized Groups, Brenda L. Beagan, Kaitlin R. Sibbald, Tara M. Pride, Stephanie R. Bizzeth Oct 2022

Client-Centered Practice When Professional And Social Power Are Uncoupled: The Experiences Of Therapists From Marginalized Groups, Brenda L. Beagan, Kaitlin R. Sibbald, Tara M. Pride, Stephanie R. Bizzeth

The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy

Background: Client-centeredness is foundational to occupational therapy, yet virtually no research has examined this aspect of practice as experienced by therapists from marginalized groups. The discourse of client-centeredness implicitly assumes a “dominant-group” therapist. Professional power is assumed to be accompanied by social power and privilege. Here, we explore what happens when professional and social power are uncoupled.

Method: In-depth interviews grounded in critical phenomenology were conducted with Canadian therapists (n = 20) who self-identified as disabled, minority sexual/gender identity (LGBTQ+), racialized, ethnic minority, and/or from working-class backgrounds. Iterative thematic analysis employed constant comparison using ATLAS.ti for team coding. …

Enriching University Of Rochester's Stem Collections With Resources About And By Bipoc Scientists, Susan K. Cardinal

Upstate New York Science Librarians Conference

You might think that the collections of a major library would be unaffected by cultural prejudices. However, even the University of Rochester's collections are sadly lacking in works by and about scientists of color. Our poster describes our work to rectify this situation in order to inspire current and future BIPOC students to go into STEM fields. One scientist who we feature is Joy Buolamwini, who recently earned her PhD from MIT’s Media Lab. She noticed that analyses of photographs are often biased, so she formed the Algorithmic Justice League to study and correct that problem. Our collections are more …

Hidden Identity: A Constructivist Grounded Theory Of Black Male Identity Development At Historically Black Colleges And Universities, Therron Rogers, Donald Mitchell Jr. Oct 2022

Hidden Identity: A Constructivist Grounded Theory Of Black Male Identity Development At Historically Black Colleges And Universities, Therron Rogers, Donald Mitchell Jr.

The Qualitative Report

Identity development models for Black males are limited, particularly within the context of higher education. Within this qualitative study, we used constructivist grounded theory to develop a theory of Black male identity development at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). We were guided by the following research questions: (1) How do the experiences at a historically Black college or university influence the identity development for Black males? (2) What externalfactors influence identity development for Black males who attend a historically Black college or university? Eight Black males participated in this study, each completing series of semistructured interviews. Derived from the …

E-Books Need Call Numbers To Be Discoverable, Henrik Spoon, Adam Chandler, Laura Daniels Oct 2022

E-Books Need Call Numbers To Be Discoverable, Henrik Spoon, Adam Chandler, Laura Daniels

Upstate New York Science Librarians Conference

Call numbers play a central role in the ability of libraries to shelve books next to other books on the same or similar subject. With e-books making up an increasing proportion of library holdings, it is important that e-books can be e-shelved and discovered along with their print counterparts. At the start of 2021, e-books in the Cornell University Library Catalog did not have the same detailed classification numbers in their MARC records that print books receive. This hobbles attempts to make e-books available on virtual shelves for serendipitous discovery and to distinguish collections of e-books in related subjects like …
