How Do Changes In Family Role Status Impact Employees? An Empirical Investigation, Matthew B. Perrigino, Ellen Ernst Kossek, Rebecca J. Thompson, Todd Bodner

Psychology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Purpose – Despite the proliferation of work–family research, a thorough understanding of family role status changes (e.g. the gaining of elder or child caregiving responsibilities) remain under-theorized and under-examined. The purpose of this paper is to conceptualize various forms of family role status changes and examine the ways in which these changes influence various employee outcomes.

Design/methodology/approach – Data were collected as part of the work–family health study. Using a longitudinal, three-wave study with two-time lags of 6 months (n = 151 family role status changes; n = 392 individuals with family role stability), this study uses one-way analysis of …

A Comparative Study Of The Impact Of Regimes In Latin America’S Education Systems: The Cases Of Mercosur, Alba-Tcp, And Pa, Victoria Desimoni Oct 2022

A Comparative Study Of The Impact Of Regimes In Latin America’S Education Systems: The Cases Of Mercosur, Alba-Tcp, And Pa, Victoria Desimoni

Master's Theses

This thesis presents a comparative study of the regional education policies and programs in three Latin American (LA) regional entities (hereafter ‘regimes’ and ‘regionalisms’): The Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR), the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America – People’s Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP), and Pacific Alliance (PA). Each of these represents different regionalisms coexisting in LA (hegemonic, post-hegemonic, and counter-hegemonic regionalisms), which makes them ideal for comparative analysis. This project aims to compare these very diverse regimes to interrogate the similarities and dissimilarities, as well as discover who (the regional or the global) is shaping education systems in this area …

How Chicago Public Schools Engaged African American Parents In The Closing Of Austin Career Academy High School, Shani Blackwell Oct 2022

How Chicago Public Schools Engaged African American Parents In The Closing Of Austin Career Academy High School, Shani Blackwell

Master's Theses

The role of African American parents in education reform initiatives in Chicago is not clearly defined. Local School Councils (LSC) allow parents to make school related decisions in Chicago. But LSCs are removed from decisions about whether or not to place school on or off probation, and whether or not to close schools based on performance or building utilization. In 2013, African American and Latinx parents expressed outrage over the decision by Chicago Public Schools (CPS) to close 49 schools with protests, including a hunger strike by a group of parents, and pleas to the Chicago Board of Education (BOE). …

Every military personnel will eventually leave the service for civilian life. Their success is largely attributed to preparation. In order to be prepared a service member needs to be well informed about the services offered to them. My capstone project aims to provide service members with this information in a clear and concise manner. Utilizing research and military experience I will compile a booklet that will allow transitioning service members to be better informed. A survey will be used to obtain quantifiable data to better understand the capstones impact on my intended audience.

Digital Transformation And Higher Education, Teresa M. Amos Oct 2022

Digital Transformation And Higher Education, Teresa M. Amos

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

Digital Transformation (Dx) is defined as “a series of deep and coordinated culture, workforce, and technology shifts that enable new educational and operating models and transform an institution’s operations, strategic directions, and value proposition” (Radhakrishnan, 2022). This definition doesn’t mean that it is just for information technology departments in higher education to learn and deploy. But it is an overall cultural and business analysis of a university or college to make sure that the technology investments in an institution align with goals of the institution with student success endeavors as a key measurement.

Unfortunately, it is often lost on many …

The Simplicity Of Connecting With Our Children, Mindy M. Salcido Oct 2022

The Simplicity Of Connecting With Our Children, Mindy M. Salcido

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

Connecting with our children is something that many parents struggle with but often overthink. It is often through being purposeful and present that we create times to connect. To help parents and children find fun ways to connect, I wrote a book showing a mom and son doing everyday activities together. In addition to completing a reading of this book to local families in my community, I also created a brochure that provided a list of activities as well as some of the benefits of connecting with our children. At the completion of the reading event, we had a Q …

Determining Suitable Green Biorefinery Locations In Ireland For Irish Agriculture Using Co-Design, Economic And Geographical Information Systems, Alice Hand Oct 2022

Determining Suitable Green Biorefinery Locations In Ireland For Irish Agriculture Using Co-Design, Economic And Geographical Information Systems, Alice Hand

Theses

The aim of this thesis is to investigate potential locations for a suitable green biorefinery model in Ireland, which would offer an opportunity for sustainable diversification to grassland farmers. A mixed method approach was used to collect data to support the design and analyse a green biorefinery model. A three phased methodology was applied representing the Co-design, Economic and the Geographical Information Systems analysis phase. Key stakeholders identified in the co-design phase included farmers, cooperatives, market partners as having a direct impact on a biorefinery. This provided insight to the farmers preferred model. Using these findings, an economic assessment was …

Bicycling To Level The Field: A Study Of Divvy In Chicago, Bushra Ghaniwala Oct 2022

Bicycling To Level The Field: A Study Of Divvy In Chicago, Bushra Ghaniwala

Master's Theses

With the onset of COVID-19, norms across the world shifted, including the way people moved in major cities. In order to conduct a comparative analysis, understanding transportation habits before COVID-19 hit cities is important. In this paper, I have focused on Divvy bikes in the city of Chicago, which are touted as a means to achieving first- and last-mile transit especially in underserved communities. I am interested in initiating the line of inquiring into who Divvy bikes served during a time when there was major fear around high transmission of COVID-19 on trains and buses due to the close proximity. …

This portfolio ties together concepts from the disciplines of ethnobotany, botany, and Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK). It draws on themes of native plant preservation and restoration as well as ethics of plant collection and public education regarding the native flora of Montana and the broader Interior Northwest. It is my intention to explore the many ways humans connect with plants and how they may inform our sense of place, and to provide education about the benefits of native plants so people may feel more inclined to protect them and live in right relationship with the natural environment. Overall, this portfolio …

Gatumba Massacre, Background Essay, Christopher Davey, Ezra Schrader, Fidele Sebahizi, Jean Paul Iranzi Oct 2022

Gatumba Massacre, Background Essay, Christopher Davey, Ezra Schrader, Fidele Sebahizi, Jean Paul Iranzi

Background

On August 13th 2004, 166 people were killed and 106 were wounded at the UN’s Gatumba refugee camp in Burundi. Nearly all the victims were members of the Banyamulenge community, a Congolese Tutsi ethnic group who were deliberately targeted in the attack. The massacre was carried out by the Forces Nationales pour la Liberation (FNL), a Hutu supremacist rebel group fighting in Burundi’s civil war. Understanding the Gatumba Massacre requires understanding what forced those Banyamulenge refugees to flee their homes in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and why the FNL targeted them. This background essay addresses the context …

An Est Approach To Entrepreneurial Exit In Chinese Family Business: A Case Study Of H Company, Lidian Zhang

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Previous entrepreneurial exit literature has mostly followed a feature-oriented logic by summarizing the impact of industry and company characteristics and entrepreneurs’ personal traits on entrepreneurial exit decisions, disregarding the decision-making process of entrepreneurial exit and the role of key events in advancing the process. This thesis endeavors to explore the determining factors behind entrepreneurial exit decisions of family businesses and the dynamic decision-making process based on Event System Theory (EST) with a single-case study method and a feature-oriented and process-oriented approach.

This study has conducted an in-depth investigation into Company H, which possesses typical features of Chinese private family businesses. …

Multi-Label Prediction For Political Text-As-Data, Aaron Erlich, Stefano G. Dantas, Benjamin E. Bagozzi, Daniel Berliner, Brian Palmer-Rubin Oct 2022

Multi-Label Prediction For Political Text-As-Data, Aaron Erlich, Stefano G. Dantas, Benjamin E. Bagozzi, Daniel Berliner, Brian Palmer-Rubin

Political Science Faculty Research and Publications

Political scientists increasingly use supervised machine learning to code multiple relevant labels from a single set of texts. The current “best practice” of individually applying supervised machine learning to each label ignores information on inter-label association(s), and is likely to under-perform as a result. We introduce multi-label prediction as a solution to this problem. After reviewing the multi-label prediction framework, we apply it to code multiple features of (i) access to information requests made to the Mexican government and (ii) country-year human rights reports. We find that multi-label prediction outperforms standard supervised learning approaches, even in instances where the correlations …

Professional As A Mother: Empowering Working Mothers Through Social Media, Trinity Marie Hernandez-Lopez Oct 2022

Professional As A Mother: Empowering Working Mothers Through Social Media, Trinity Marie Hernandez-Lopez

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

Women in the workforce continue to experience a gendered pay gap, making only around 86% of the salary of their male counterparts (Pew Research, 2022). This is worse still for those women with children, who are less likely to be considered for promotional opportunities and dismissed as not committed to their careers. As a mother, I have been on the receiving end of this discrimination, but I am also lucky enough to understand my rights and value in the workforce. The goal of this capstone project was to improve the outcomes for working mothers by developing an online community to …

Decentralizing Sustainably -- How Blockchain Can Benefit Environmental Goals, Logan J. Losito Oct 2022

Decentralizing Sustainably -- How Blockchain Can Benefit Environmental Goals, Logan J. Losito

William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review

[...] As presented in this Note, with a lack of clear guidance, disparate legislation from U.S. states continues to form a patchwork approach of policy to the topic of blockchain, with notably little attention paid towards environmentally sustainable practices. While this transpires across the states, sentiments from members of the federal legislative and, most recently, the executive branches of government express priorities in two areas when developing policy on the matter.

As this Note will outline, the concerns are generally over the sustainability of cryptocurrency mining practices and the potential for blockchain innovation to benefit environmental sustainability goals. However, while …

An Assessment Of Canning Practices Among Food Preservation Workshop Participants During Covid-19 In Texas, Jenna D. Anding

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Interest in home food preservation has continued through the COVID-19 pandemic. This study assessed home food preservation practices among individuals attending workshops delivered primarily through distance technology. Two hundred eighty (280) participants completed a survey that assessed methods of food preservation and sources of information and recipes that had been utilized within the previous 12 months. Of those participating, 148 had recently canned food, and 90 of those individuals reported using one or more unsafe methods of food preservation, such as processing vegetables with a boiling water bath canner, open kettle, or oven canning. The internet was the most popular …

Cultural Humility Training For Mentors: Lessons Learned And Implications Of Youth Programs, Amy J. Anderson, April Riordan, Lavasha Smith, Bridget Hillard, Bernadette Sánchez

Journal of Youth Development

The current paper presents lessons learned from a research-to-practice partnership between mentoring program practitioners and researchers that focused on the development and implementation of a cultural humility training for volunteer mentors. Using multiple data sources (e.g., training materials, field notes, mentor surveys), we present a description of the research-to-practice partnership and the Culturally Smart Relationships pilot training content. We generate practice-oriented lessons to inform future cultural humility training work with staff and volunteers in youth programs. Our lessons reflect recommendations that emerged from five project phases: (a) organizational commitment to justice, equity, diversity, inclusion; (b) training curriculum and logistical planning; …
