This thesis draws on my lived experiences growing up in a mixed-status immigrant family in rural, PA. Drawing from anthropological and interdisciplinary research that explores how marginalized communities experience and navigate systemic violence, this thesis explores themes in the Latinx immigrant community such as a contradictory sense of hyper surveillance and invisibility. Inspired by abolitionist and geographer Ruth Wilson Gilmore’s research, I focus on …

The portmanteau Vietglish refers to the combination of specific aspects belonging to both the Vietnamese language and the English language in particular ways, of which this paper will focus on two divisions. The first is a combination of English words in the day-to-day Vietnamese communication, signifying a lack of correct vocabulary. The speaker usually maintains the Vietnamese accents to keep the conversation mainly in Vietnamese, despite the difficulties that they have to deal with finding the lexicon needed. The other is the “incomplete” formation of Vietnamese conversation, mixing in English grammatical structures, making each sentence sound less “natural” to the …

Content Moderation As Surveillance, Hannah Bloch-Wehba Oct 2022

Content Moderation As Surveillance, Hannah Bloch-Wehba

Faculty Scholarship

Technology platforms are the new governments, and content moderation is the new law, or so goes a common refrain. As platforms increasingly turn toward new, automated mechanisms of enforcing their rules, the apparent power of the private sector seems only to grow. Yet beneath the surface lies a web of complex relationships between public and private authorities that call into question whether platforms truly possess such unilateral power. Law enforcement and police are exerting influence over platform content rules, giving governments a louder voice in supposedly “private” decisions. At the same time, law enforcement avails itself of the affordances of …

In Alzheimer's disease (AD), where amyloid-β (Aβ) and tau deposits in the brain, hyperexcitation of neuronal networks is an underlying disease mechanism, but its cause remains unclear. Here, we used the Collaborative Cross (CC) forward genetics mouse platform to identify modifier genes of neuronal hyperexcitation. We found LAMP5 as a novel regulator of hyperexcitation in mice, critical for the survival of distinct interneuron populations. Interestingly, synaptic LAMP5 was lost in AD brains and LAMP5 interneurons degenerated in different AD mouse models. Genetic reduction of LAMP5 augmented functional deficits and neuronal network hypersynchronicity in both Aβ- and tau-driven AD mouse models. …

Exploring Goodness Of Fit: Social Cognition Among Students With Gifts And Talents In Ireland And India, Jennifer Riedl Cross, Anyesha Mishra, Colm O'Reilly, Paromita Roy

SENG Journal: Exploring the Psychology of Giftedness

Utilizing previous research focusing on the Stigma of Giftedness Paradigm (SGP), this study explains social cognitive beliefs with the help of self-efficacy among students with gifts and talents (SWGT) in Ireland and India. The study considers the concept of person-environment fit with respect to how the SWGT feel they are being seen by others and how they react to their environment, where their self-efficacy plays a role. Irish and Indian students (N = 430) were matched by age (15-17) and gender. Data were collected using the Social Cognitive Beliefs scale as an indicator of person-environment fit, and the Multidimensional …

Overexcitability Research: Implications For The Theory Of Positive Disintegration And The Field Of Gifted Education, Sal Mendaglio

SENG Journal: Exploring the Psychology of Giftedness

It is difficult to conceive that anyone—parent, educator, psychologist, or researcher—interested in giftedness/gifted education could not be aware of the word, overexcitability. What, then, has facilitated the popularity of the word in our field? A major force has been the research conducted investigating this concept’s relationship to giftedness, broadly speaking. What began with a handful of articles, published in the 1980s by a few interconnected American scholars, has become a veritable body of research. Publications in the early 2020s attest to researchers’ continuing interest in the concept. Review of early and recent publications suggests that newer research continues in …

Examination malpractice has become a global cankerworm that has eaten so deep into our educational system and posing a serious threat to total development of students in our educational system.
