The Socioeconomic Achievement Gap In The Us Public Schools, Kate Bradley
The Socioeconomic Achievement Gap In The Us Public Schools, Kate Bradley
Ballard Brief
Impoverished children are severely disadvantaged before even reaching adulthood. In public schools, lower-income children are significantly less likely to succeed than their wealthier classmates. Poverty affects a child's brain development, inhibiting their ability to learn and understand. In addition, lower income students go to schools with insufficient funding and resources: quality teachers or the lack thereof increase the inability to provide for these students adequately. The achievement gap affects students by increasing dropout rates. It involves the nation by costing the US nearly $700 billion annually. Even more grave than the financial consequences is the loss of every student-each with …
Case Study 3: Next Steps: Applying A Trauma-Informed Model To Create An Anti-Racist Organizational Culture
Journal of Nonprofit Innovation
“Although there has been a significant increase in the delivery of evidence-supported, trauma-informed care over the past few years, there has been less discussion around the consideration of the broader cultural, political, and societal factors that contextualize client trauma and that also need to be recognized and understood to promote healing and prevent future trauma."
Case Study 4: “We Really Need This”: Trauma-Informed Yoga For Veteran Women With A History Of Military Sexual Trauma
Journal of Nonprofit Innovation
“Up to 70% of women service members in the United States report military sexual trauma (MST); many develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and co-occurring disorders. Trauma-informed yoga (TIY) is suggested to improve psychiatric symptoms and shown feasible and acceptable in emerging research, yet no work has evaluated TIY in MST survivors. The current quality improvement project aimed to examine TIY’s feasibility, acceptability, and perceived effects in the context of MST.”

A Study On The Mechanisms Of Shareholders’ Equity Adjustment In Bankruptcy Reorganization Of Listed Companies, Yongliang Zhang
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
In recent years, amid cyclical macroeconomic fluctuations, national economic slowdown, economic restructuring, and over-expansion of some enterprises, a number of listed companies have faced serious debt and operational challenges, many of which are worthy of keeping afloat. From June 1, 2007 when the Enterprise Bankruptcy Law of the People’s Republic of China came into effect, up to the end of 2021, a total of 93 listed companies in China have gone through bankruptcy reorganization, one of the major means to save the listed companies in distress.
The bankruptcy reorganization of listed companies, by its nature, is a process of game …

Do Parents Matter For Student Loan Repayment After Graduation?, Byeongdon Oh
Do Parents Matter For Student Loan Repayment After Graduation?, Byeongdon Oh
Sociology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Previous studies suggest that a college degree is the great equalizer leveling the playing field. However, the rapidly growing educational debt of college graduates might restrict their life chances throughout adulthood, particularly for those raised in socioeconomically disadvantaged families. This study uses data from the National Survey of College Graduates to examine whether parents’ socioeconomic status is related to their children’s student loan repayment after graduation. Holding the amount borrowed for completing higher education constant, college graduates with less educated parents hold a larger amount of educational debt in adulthood compared with their counterparts with more educated parents. The association …

The Global Climate Change Knowledge And Practices Of 4-H And Extension Youth Educators, Roberta H. Hunter, Hui-Hui Wang, Bryanna J. Nelson, Devarati Bhattacharya
Journal of International Agricultural and Extension Education
4-H and Extension educators who work with youth are uniquely positioned to help them meaningfully learn about global climate change (GCC) in a way that connects to their everyday lives and interests. Yet we don’t have a baseline understanding of these educators’ knowledge of GCC or how they teach about it. This paper presents brief findings of a study intended to fill that gap in knowledge. Educators from six states responded to an online survey in 2020. GCC knowledge varied by topic and by educator instructional focus, with STEM and Civic Engagement educators scoring highest. Questions about greenhouse gasses and …

Environmental Governance By Contract: The Growing Role Of Supply Chain Contracting, Michael P. Vandenburgh, Patricia A. Moore
Michigan Journal of Environmental & Administrative Law
Corporate net zero climate commitments and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) policies have the potential to bypass barriers to international, national, and subnational government action on climate change and other environmental issues. This Article presents the results of a new empirical study that demonstrates the remarkably widespread use of environmental supply chain contracting requirements. The study finds that roughly 80% of the ten largest firms in seven global sectors include environmental requirements in supply chain contracting, a substantial increase over the 50% reported by a comparable study fifteen years ago. The Article concludes that the prevalence of environmental supply chain …
A Systematic Comparison Of In-Person And Video-Based Online Interviewing, Bojana Lobe, David L. Morgan, Kim Hoffman
A Systematic Comparison Of In-Person And Video-Based Online Interviewing, Bojana Lobe, David L. Morgan, Kim Hoffman
Sociology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Due to the increasing popularity of online qualitative interviewing methods, we provide a systematically organized evaluation of their advantages and disadvantages in comparison to traditional in-person interviews. In particular, we describe how individual interviews, dyadic interviews, and focus groups operate in both face-to-face and videoconferencing modes. This produces five different areas for comparison: logistics and budget, ethics, recruitment, research design, and interviewing and moderating. We conclude each section with set of recommendations, and conclude with directions for future research in online interviewing.

The UNLV University Libraries recognizes that as both a direct and indirect result of colonialism and white supremacy the historical and contemporary scholarly publishing market atypically centers and prioritizes voices that are white, male, Christian, able-bodied, and heterosexual (Muka, 2018; Ray, 2018; Baffoe, Asimeng-Boahene, & Buster, 2014; and Buggs, Sims, & Kramer, 2020). In an attempt to redress this imbalance, the UNLV University Libraries is committed to collecting content by and about people and communities that have historically been excluded. This effort includes but is not limited to the intentional collection of materials about and by groups historically excluded by …
Legal And Ethical Issues In Telepsychology: A Handbook For Psychologists, Dexter Chia
Legal And Ethical Issues In Telepsychology: A Handbook For Psychologists, Dexter Chia
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This doctoral project sought to examine the various aspects of the modality of telepsychology in a handbook that can be referenced by licensed psychologists. Telepsychology’s growth in the general psychology community has caused greater attention towards its unique legal and ethical considerations when working with clients. We analyze legal and ethical issues inherent to the domains of licensure, clinical practice liability coverage, billing/payment, competence, client welfare, consent, confidentiality, and boundary navigation. After this analysis, we introduce a series of scenarios for readers to apply the discussed considerations to exercise critical thinking.
Dietary Approaches To The Treatment Of Autism Spectrum Disorders, Dhira Patel
Dietary Approaches To The Treatment Of Autism Spectrum Disorders, Dhira Patel
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This chapter reviews the literature surrounding autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and their relation to gastrointestinal (GI), behavioral, neurological, and immunological functioning. Individuals with ASDs often have poor GI health, including bowel motility issues, autoimmune and/or other adverse responses to certain foods, and lack of necessary nutrient absorption. These issues may be caused or exacerbated by restrictive behavioral patterns (e.g., preference for sweet and salty foods and/or refusal of healthy foods). Those individuals with GI issues tend to demonstrate more behavioral deficits (e.g., irritability, agitation, hyperactivity) and also tend to have an imbalance in overall gut microbiome composition, thus corroborating several …
The Community Resiliency Model In Health Decision-Making, Michelle Ngo
The Community Resiliency Model In Health Decision-Making, Michelle Ngo
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This doctoral project reviews the literature to support the utilization of the Community Resilience Model (CRM) for health-related decision making, such as health behavior change and medication adherence. Research has shown that decision-making under significant stress can lead to making less advantageous choices, as the nervous system becomes dysregulated. The evidence in this literature review suggests that self-regulation using skills in the CRM Model can increase one’s ability to effectively making decisions.

Objective: Due to the shared pathogenesis of asthma and rheumatoid arthritis (RA), patients with asthma were found to have a higher risk of RA. While the benefits and safety of Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) for asthma have been reported, the scientific evidence regarding its effect on RA is limited. This longitudinal cohort study aimed to determine the relation between CHM use and RA risk in patients with asthma.
Methods: Using the nationwide claims data, we enrolled 33,963 patients 20–80 years of age who were newly diagnosed with asthma and simultaneously free of RA between 2000 and 2007. From this sample, …

Yoga For Mental Health And Healing, Angie Holzer Edd
Yoga For Mental Health And Healing, Angie Holzer Edd
Journal of Nonprofit Innovation
Overview: Yoga has been shown to be a great tool in dealing with a variety of different mental health topics. To utilize yoga as a healing tool, there needs to be a broader understanding of yoga beyond using yoga as an exercise. When we engage other aspects of yoga into our practice, such as mindfulness and pranayama (breath), we increase the possibilities of healing by making it a holistic approach.

Adoption Of Improved Agricultural Practices: Learning From Off-Season Vegetable Production In Nepal, Raju Ghimire, Marari Suvedi, Michael Kaplowitz
Journal of International Agricultural and Extension Education
This study examines factors that appear to contribute to farmers’ adoption and discontinuation of poly house technology for off-season vegetable production. We collected cross-sectional survey data from a sample of 151 households in Kaski district, Nepal during October 2018. The data are analyzed using Heckman’s two stage sample selection model. The study reveals that the family members report being engaged in nonfarm sector that there is an increased probability of discontinuation of poly house technology. Farmers may be diverting their labor towards nonfarm activities that result in higher returns to labor and different risks. At the same time, the results …

The unprovoked Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, has turned into a bloody war with no end in sight. Towns have been brought to ruins by heavy shelling that destroyed the infrastructure. The country’s cultural heritage, along with its own national identity, is under threat. Libraries, archives, museums, and monuments have become war casualties. This article examines the destruction of libraries during the first fifty days of conflict based on articles, press releases, and statements published in international media outlets and on librarians’ accounts posted on social media. The loss of human lives is ongoing while millions are …
Historical Political Economy: What Is It?, Jeffrey Jenkins, Jared Rubin
Historical Political Economy: What Is It?, Jeffrey Jenkins, Jared Rubin
ESI Working Papers
In this chapter, we define what historical political economy (HPE) is and is not, classify the major themes in the literature, assess the relative strengths and weaknesses of the literature, and point to future directions. We view HPE as social scientific inquiry which highlights political causes or consequences of historical issues. HPE is different from conventional political economy in the emphasis placed on historical processes and context. While we view HPE in the most inclusive manner reasonable, we define it to exclude works that are either solely of contemporary importance or use historical data without any historical context (e.g., long-run …

Use Of Twitter Among College Students For Academics: A Mixed-Methods Approach, Stefanie Amiruzzaman, Md Amiruzzaman
Languages & Cultures Faculty Publications
For almost a decade, Twitter use and its impact on students' academic performance have been explored by many researchers. Despite growing scholarly interest, studies have been mostly quantitative in nature. The findings of previous studies are conflicting; thus, an in-depth study is needed to determine how and what impacts college students' academic performance (i.e., GPA) when they spend time on Twitter. The purpose of this study was to understand the effects of Twitter use on college students' academic performance. The present study shows that individual analysis techniques, such as quantitative or qualitative tools, are not enough to understand the underlying …

Labor Market Efficiency And Youth Unemployment In The Mena Region, Wasseem Mina
Labor Market Efficiency And Youth Unemployment In The Mena Region, Wasseem Mina
Topics in Middle Eastern and North African Economies
The Arab countries of the MENA region adopted a state-led development path in the sixties and seventies. Since then, the government and the public sector have become the main owners of factors of production and labor force employers (Cammett et al., 2015). Salehi-Isfahani (2012) projected high youth unemployment rate to be a key challenge. The purpose of this paper is to qualitatively discuss the development of youth unemployment over time in the Arab world and empirically examine the determinants of youth unemployment. Data shows that high youth unemployment is a challenge. Using system GMM estimation methodology and panel data on …

The Asymmetric Effects Of External Debt On Economic Growth In Selected Mena Countries: Some Insights From A Panel Quantile Regression, Mahmoud Haddad, Refk Selmi, Shawkat Hammoudeh
Topics in Middle Eastern and North African Economies
The increased level of debt is a major risk for the financial stability and questions the ability of countries to balance fiscal vulnerabilities with development goals. With the rising debt wave and additional pressures induced by the pandemic and the Russian/Ukrainian war on sources of development finance, this study uses a panel quantile regression to re-examine the asymmetric relationship between the external debt and economic growth in six highly indebted MENA countries, namely, Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco and Tunisia over the period 2006-2019. The outcomes support the main hypothesis that high debt reduces economic growth, yet this effect seems …

Advancing Philanthropic Strategy Through Evaluative Thinking: One Foundation’S Approach, Christine Baker, Margaret Eigsti, Kathryn Racine, Laurence O’Connell
The Foundation Review
The Sisters of Charity Foundation of Cleveland supports Catholic sisters and their ministries in northeast Ohio through the grantmaking, partnership, capacitybuilding, and evaluation efforts of its Catholic Sisters Program Area. The decline of sisters actively engaged in ministry, due both to their rising median age and a decades-long decline in their overall numbers, called for a reconsideration and likely revision of the CSPA existing theory of change.
Unlike other strategic approaches at the foundation, such as ending homelessness or improving health equity, transitioning from sister-led to lay-led leadership of ministries remained largely unexplored: Basic research was lacking, and model practices …
