Ethical Behaviour And The Use Of Social Media By Undergraduates, University Of Ibadan., Tolulope Elizabeth Adenekan Phd, Ayomide Joy Lala

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The attraction of social media tools in higher education has been attributed to the affordances and participatory nature that the tools offer. For undergraduates in this generation, social networking has become an “addiction”. Ordinarily, a student who has a Facebook account opens the account daily to check new updates and spends hours studying new updates until he/she realizes that there are more important things to do like school work that has been missed because of logging in to a social platform. The research design adopted for the study is a descriptive survey. A multistage random sampling technique was used for …

Operationalizing The Gift Of Love (Gol) In Interpersonal Reconstructive Therapy (Irt): An Examination Of The Role Of Meaning Reconstruction In Therapeutic Change., Eliza Stucker-Rozovsky

Dissertations, 2020-current

Interpersonal Reconstructive Therapy (IRT) (Benjamin, 2003/2006) is an integrative, principles-based treatment approach and theory of psychopathology that conceptualizes the motivating factor that underlies personality psychopathology as the gift of love (GOL). That is, copy processes are learned and maintained to achieve psychic proximity to the important people and their internalized representations (IPIRs) that were the original teachers. Relinquishing this gift of love allows a person to re-orient their life towards uncovering and living by their own individually held meanings that will then define how they relate to themselves and their world. Spirituality and religion have historically helped individuals make meaning …

Legitimacy Crisis? Cross-Cultural Investigation Of Institutional Trust, Yi Yin Aug 2022

Legitimacy Crisis? Cross-Cultural Investigation Of Institutional Trust, Yi Yin

Theses and Dissertations

There is a strong presence of legitimacy crisis in contemporary sociology. Habermas (1975) was the first to describe a legitimacy crisis, which refers to the decline in confidence in administrative functions, institutions, and leadership. A growing body of scholarship suggests that the world is experiencing an accelerating legitimacy crisis (e.g., the Trump presidency, Brexit, Coronavirus, the Great Recession of 2008, the war on terrorism, climate change, and mass global migration). The declining trust in institutions (e.g. government, justice system, police, parliament, political parties, and civic services) is a leading indicator of the legitimacy crisis. Institutional trust describes social and cultural …

Distinctive Sans Forgetica Font Does Not Benefit Memory Accuracy In The Drm Paradigm, Anie Mitchell Aug 2022

Distinctive Sans Forgetica Font Does Not Benefit Memory Accuracy In The Drm Paradigm, Anie Mitchell

Honors Theses

A common method used by memory scholars to enhance retention is to make materials more challenging to learn—a benefit termed desirable difficulties. Recently, researchers have investigated the efficacy of Sans Forgetica, a perceptually disfluent or distinctive font, which may increase the processing effort required at study and, as a result, enhance memory. We examined the effects of Sans Forgetica relative to a standard control font (Arial) on both correct memory and associative memory errors using the Deese/Roediger-McDermott (DRM) false memory paradigm. Across four experiments which included nearly 300 participants, Sans Forgetica was found to have no impact on correct or …

LGBTQ+ populations constitute increasing proportions of children, adolescents, and adults in the United States. Compared to their heterosexual counterparts, this group suffers from health inequities, including oral health. The report “Oral Health: Advances and Challenges” identified the LGBTQ+ community as an underserved population which faces significant barriers in accessing oral health care. Coverage of LGBTQ+ topics in formal education settings in both dental schools and dental hygiene programs is scarce, which contributes to inequities within this group. Increasing curriculum content related to LGBTQ+ populations is of utmost importance to promote optimal patient-provider interactions while improving oral health outcomes. Ensuring equity …

Relocating Community To The Virtual: Sound Knowledge, Affective Listening, And The (Dis)Embodying Of Sound And Space, Zachery D. Coffey Aug 2022

Relocating Community To The Virtual: Sound Knowledge, Affective Listening, And The (Dis)Embodying Of Sound And Space, Zachery D. Coffey

Masters Theses

Music within Protestant church communities frequently reduces the distinction between performers and audience, emphasizing the collective, participatory role of all congregation members, in manners of music making similar to those discussed by Thomas Turino. This dynamic helps establish individual and communal identities. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, church communities saw changes in their services, music, and ways of life. Meeting in a physical building proved impossible due to the dangers of COVID-19 and many churches mitigated these dangers by streaming, recording, and posting services online. Between 2020 and 2022, I observed and participated in changes to technological production …

Reviewer Perceptions Of Englishes In The International Journal Of Nuclear Security, Rachel Brooks Aug 2022

Reviewer Perceptions Of Englishes In The International Journal Of Nuclear Security, Rachel Brooks

Masters Theses

Linguistic bias in academic publishing, the idea that a manuscript would be rejected due to its language alone, is a growing area of concern and study. Scholars are particularly concerned that EAL (English as an Additional Language, often referred to as “non-native”) writers face this bias more than first-language English authors. The research on linguistic bias relies on understanding the perceptions about language that belong to reviewers, authors, and other parties involved in publication. This MA thesis project investigates peer reviewer perceptions of English language usage in the manuscripts that they review using the International Journal of Nuclear Security (IJNS) …

Simulating Fluvial Transport Patterns Of Human Remains In The Tennessee River, Karli Palmer Aug 2022

Simulating Fluvial Transport Patterns Of Human Remains In The Tennessee River, Karli Palmer

Masters Theses

Law enforcement and search and recovery personnel often encounter difficulties when trying to determine where to find a decedent within an aquatic environment. Drowning, boating accidents, and other water related deaths are not uncommon. However, expensive equipment such as sonar and remote operated vehicles, or specially trained rescue divers are often required when searching for remains. Due to both public health and ethical concerns, there is a lack of controlled studies on aquatic decomposition and fluvial transport of human remains, which has contributed to the difficulty of predicting where remains in the water may be located. The purpose of this …

Agenesis Of The Corpus Callosum: Developmental Trajectories Through Childhood, Kristin Eddy Aug 2022

Agenesis Of The Corpus Callosum: Developmental Trajectories Through Childhood, Kristin Eddy

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Agenesis of the corpus callosum (AgCC) is a congenital brain malformation that affects the area of the brain responsible for interhemispheric transfer of information (Paul, 2011). Individuals with AgCC tend to have specific deficits resulting from reduced interhemispheric transfer for sensory-motor information, cognitive processing speed, and deficits in complex reasoning and novel problem-solving (Brown & Paul, 2019; Mangum, 2018; Miller et al., 2018). There are indications that those with AgCC also struggle with communication skills during early stages of life (Badderudin et al., 2007) and social interactions during adolescence (Paul et al., 2007). The purpose of this study is to …

An Exploration Of Higher Education Assessment And The Role Of Diagnostic Classification Modeling In Student Learning Outcomes, Samantha Harmon Aug 2022

An Exploration Of Higher Education Assessment And The Role Of Diagnostic Classification Modeling In Student Learning Outcomes, Samantha Harmon

Masters Theses, 2020-current

Higher education assessment measures student knowledge across multiple specific skills within the general education curriculum. Results are used to inform programmatic improvement, holding universities accountable for satisfying the requirements of the state and/or accrediting agencies. Current methods for assessing student learning in higher education assess institutional objectives through aggregated information using a single total score. The Diagnostic Classification Method (DCM) has been shown to yield fine-grained information about students individually and in the aggregate, providing individual-level and SLO-specific feedback. Unfortunately, few studies have investigated the role of the DCM within higher education assessment of student learning, indicating the utility of …

Green roofs are being incorporated into stormwater management programs around the world. While numerous studies have estimated the private benefits to the owners and residents of buildings with green roofs, the value of the multiple public benefits received by non-building residents are less well known. We use a choice experiment survey to estimate the public benefits for a proposed green roof program in Portland, Oregon, USA. These benefits include reduced combined sewer overflows, reduced urban heat island effects, and an increase in pollinators such as birds, bees and butterflies. Past investments in stormwater infrastructure have exposed some residents to poor …
