One’S Social Media Identity: Article Review, Sasha S. Brenden Jul 2022

One’S Social Media Identity: Article Review, Sasha S. Brenden

Pepperdine Journal of Communication Research

In the last ten years the impact of social media has expanded dramatically. People's identity used to only be affected by face to face interactions; however, now one's identity can be built and shifted through online social interactions and relationships over social media. Fake news causes a shift in identity because of impossible ideals of perfection. Fake news not only dictates what is the ideal image but can create a negative association to those who do not fall into that minesquale category (men and women). These studies show the unlimited communication regulations on social media, which leads to cyberbullying (electronic …

Multiracial Identity Negotiation In A “Monoracial” World, Stephanie G. Chan, Aileen R. Blomdal

Pepperdine Journal of Communication Research

The constant shift of societal values and ideals has historically left multiple individuals in utter confusion over their acceptance in certain social settings. A specific minority group that has been at the brunt of this dilemma for many years, however, are those who identify as multiracial. Mixed-race individuals have struggled to be equally accepted and appreciated for their rich cultural heritages, and with the multiple unique intercultural relationships that currently exist, these individuals are constantly dealing with niched categories, labels, and microaggressions that separate them from other minority groups. Through greater research into the brief history, the modern-day problems, and …

Taking Responsibility For Systemic Failures: Rhetorical Homologies And Discourses Of Sustainability, Health, And Voting, Alice Grosu Jul 2022

Taking Responsibility For Systemic Failures: Rhetorical Homologies And Discourses Of Sustainability, Health, And Voting, Alice Grosu

Pepperdine Journal of Communication Research

When considering the discourse of presidential candidates, talk show hosts discussing mental health issues, and companies advertising sustainable goods, this essay argues that they share a formal resemblance. Whenever the same formal resemblance, or the same pattern, can be found within different instances of rhetoric, this indicates that the texts are homologous. Making sense of these instances of discourse is essential if one seeks to understand the way in which the public’s political engagement can be hindered by these rhetorical acts.

Persuasive Campaign: Pepperdine Climate Action Initiative, Dawnielle L. Wright, Ruth Childress Jul 2022

Persuasive Campaign: Pepperdine Climate Action Initiative, Dawnielle L. Wright, Ruth Childress

Pepperdine Journal of Communication Research

What does it do to a university's credibility if they do not believe in science? 97% or more of climate scientists agree that climate warming over the last century is due to anthropogenic activity (NASA, 2022). However, Pepperdine University is a climate denier in the face of a scientific consensus (Levens, 2022). The Pepperdine administration has refused to admit that anthropogenic climate change is real with the reasoning of "encouraging debate" on the topic (Levens, 2022). Students are upset at this claim due to the implication that climate change is negatively affecting vulnerable populations around the globe, and Christians are …

The Narrative Paradigm In Sarah Kay's "If I Should Have A Daughter", Stephanie G. Chan

Pepperdine Journal of Communication Research

In her 2011 TED Talk debut, spoken word poet Sarah Kay presented a breathtaking performance of two of her poems, “B” and “Hiroshima.” Throughout her speech, she takes the audience through the process of self-realization that transformed her into the poet she is today. From her first performance at just 14 years old, to being welcomed by New York’s Bowery Poetry Club, to creating Project Voice alongside her college classmate Phil Kaye, to now teaching spoken word poetry to the teenagers she once was, Kay proves that spoken word as an art form is more than just pen on paper. …

Assessing The Practical Cybersecurity Skills Gained Through Criminal Justice Academic Programs To Benefit Security Operations Centers (Socs), Lucy Tsado, Jung Seob "Scott" Kim

Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice

Private-sector and public-sector organizations have increasingly built specific business units for securing company assets, reputation, and lives, known as security operations centers (SOCs). Depending on the organization, these centers may also be referred to as global security operations centers, cybersecurity operations centers, fusion centers, and corporate command centers, among many other names. The concept of centralized function within an organization to improve an organization’s security posture has attracted both the government and the private sectors to either build their own SOCs or hire third-party SOC companies.

In this article, the need for a multidisciplinary approach to cybersecurity education at colleges …

Distinguishing Trade Publications Video, Rhonda J Mcginnis

Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)

This Lightning Talk would discuss the frustration I've felt with traditional materials designed to teach students the difference between Scholarly and Popular Journals. Even when materials address trade publications, they rarely if ever promote them positively. As a Business Librarian, I know that such journals are vitally important in the Business disciplines so I set out to create a very brief video on Scholarly vs Trade vs Popular journals designed especially for business students. My talk would discuss the perceived need, the creation process, and it reception/use since creation. I would provide a link to the video if there was …

High Performance Judoka’S Views On Their Athlete Journey And The Need For Athlete Education, Katrina Mcdonald, Anna Stodter, Mathew Dowling, Justin Roberts

Journal of Athlete Development and Experience

High-performance sport has been the subject of controversy and scandal, coming under heavy scrutiny within the broad issue of “Duty of Care” in terms of the welfare and holistic development of athletes. The United Kingdom has many different schemes and mechanisms that are available to athletes to support them in their development on their athlete journey. However, there is a lack of research exploring whether these schemes and mechanisms fulfill athlete needs and facilitate athlete development. Utilizing Charmaz’s constructivist grounded theory method, twelve full-time, high-performance Judoka (Judo athletes) were intensively interviewed, exploring the experience of their journey as an athlete. …

An online survey was emailed to 753 athletes within the English Institute of Sport. Response rate 52.3%. 371 participants (median age 25) completed measures of psychological distress and subjective well-being alongside demographics and sport-related variables.

High or very high psychological distress was reported by 23.7%. Poor subjective well-being was reported by 18.8%. Of those reporting psychological distress, 9% also reported good subjective well-being. "Do You Really See Us?":Black College Athlete Perceptions Of Inclusion At Di Historically White Institutions, Shannon Jolly, Jepkorir Rose Chepyator-Thomson

Journal of Athlete Development and Experience

While recent sport research has highlighted benefits of racial diversity on teams and in the workplace, few studies have examined how demographic composition is perceived by college athletes. Fewer have investigated how racially marginalized athletes experience the phenomena. Thus, the current study explores the intersection of race, gender, and athletic identity in Black college athletes at DI Historically White Institutions (HWIs), perceptions of inclusion, and its influence on sense of belonging. Employing critical race theory, two focus groups and six semi-structured interviews that incorporated vignettes were conducted with six current Black athletes at DI HWIs in the Southeastern U.S. Findings …

College Athletes’ Views On Academics: A Qualitative Assessment Of Perceptions Of Academic Success, Amanda M. Brouwer, John Johanson, Thomas Carlson

Journal of Athlete Development and Experience

The primary purpose of the current study was to give “voice” to college athletes regarding their views on academics. Given their perspectives, means of promoting their academic achievement were suggested. Research describing athletes’ experiences and the impact of socio-emotional stressors on academic success, especially for those not at a Division I school, is needed. Therefore, a qualitative study exploring the academic experiences of college athletes was conducted. Twelve focus groups of college athletes (N = 62) from six teams were held. Results revealed that college athletes are motivated to achieve by external factors and see grades as an external …

Downsizing The Business Print Collection, Sally Lajoie Jul 2022

Downsizing The Business Print Collection, Sally Lajoie

Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)

On many campuses, library shelf space is limited and perhaps even shrinking. And with a shift towards more online learning, a decline in print usage, and a greater demand for student space, weeding has become more and more essential. In preparation for a new library building with significantly less square footage, our small sized academic library started a massive weeding project on a print collection that had never been consistently weeded in the past. With the majority of the business books on our shelves out-of-date and not circulating, this project provided an opportunity to make the business collection more relevant …

The Grand Strategy Of Gertrude Bell: From The Arab Bureau To The Creation Of Iraq, Heather S. Gregg Jul 2022

The Grand Strategy Of Gertrude Bell: From The Arab Bureau To The Creation Of Iraq, Heather S. Gregg

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The remarkable life of early-twentieth-century British adventurer Gertrude Bell has been well documented through her biographies and numerous travel books. Bell’s role as a grand strategist for the British government in the Middle East during World War I and the postwar period, however, is surprisingly understudied. Investigating Gertrude Bell as both a military strategist and a grand strategist offers important insights into how Great Britain devised its military strategy in the Middle East during World War I—particularly, Britain’s efforts to work through saboteurs and secret societies to undermine the Ottoman Empire during the war and the country’s attempts to stabilize …
