In order for nonprofit organizations to tackle complex societal issues, support from public or private sectors is generally required. Marketing to these sectors through social media channels is highly beneficial due to the inexpensive and adaptable nature of the platforms, however creating and deploying an effective marketing campaign through these mediums can be challenging. This piece will aim to emphasize important points for nonprofits to consider when creating long-term marketing strategies revolving around social media.

Nonprofit Megaphone – Helping Nonprofits With Google Ads, Jenna Ross Director
Journal of Nonprofit Innovation
The Google Ad Grant is one of the most powerful, yet under-appreciated tools in nearly every nonprofit’s marketing toolbox. Although the program has been available for over a decade, research shows that more than half of all nonprofit professionals are not aware of the Google Grant and how it can help nonprofits of all sizes.

George Murphy: A Celebrity Politician, Richard T. Longoria
George Murphy: A Celebrity Politician, Richard T. Longoria
Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
There is a growing literature on celebrity involvement in American politics. Celebrities have advantages that are beneficial when they seek elected office, but they can also lose elections despite these advantages. Because George Murphy was a Hollywood actor who both won and lost electoral contests, his case can provide insights about why celebrities win and lose elections. Having appeared in over forty movies, Murphy was a nationally recognized figure when he ran successfully for the U.S. Senate in 1964. He demonstrated that celebrities have the talents, fame, and resources to succeed in the electoral arena. These attributes alone, however, were …

Monoliths Of Authoritarianism, Cartographies Of Popular Disenfranchisement And The Ascendance Of The Far-Right In Estonia, Jokubas Salyga

This article approaches the electoral success of Estonia’s Conservative People’s Party (EKRE) from a Critical Political Economy perspective. It explores immediate and longer-term factors conducive to the surge in the support of this far-right party. After situating the radical rightist reaction in Estonia within the wider continuum of far-right morphologies across Europe, the article attributes the immediate factors explaining EKRE’s ascendence to the conjuncture of the 2008 economic crisis and its resolution. It is contended that the authoritarian neoliberal (post-)crisis environments engendered a surveillance-based imposition of fiscal restraint at the European level and recalibrated the repertories of state interventionism at …
Reevaluating Islamist Electoral Success And Participation In Government, Justin Curtis
Reevaluating Islamist Electoral Success And Participation In Government, Justin Curtis
Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Under what conditions will Islamist parties perform well in elections and what happens to the political regime should they gain political power? The canonical hypothesis—“one man, one vote, one time”—argues that Islamist parties are likely to perform well whenever elections become free and that their electoral success is likely to lead to a democratic backslide. Others argue that Islamists are not as popular as this hypothesis suggests or that only moderate Islamist parties are likely to perform well and these parties are unlikely to deliberalize a regime. I propose a modification to these hypotheses, and argue that participation in governments, …

Enhancing Information Access Through Information Literacy Programs: A Case Of Marist International University College., Edgar Owira, Arnold Mwanzu
Libraries
Information literacy has been used successfully the world over as a strategy to improve access to information resources that usually cost a lot of money but, due to lack of awareness and skills of utilization, result in low or no usage at all. Most local institutions of higher learning have implemented programs that are either embedded in their curriculum or spontaneous to maximize usage. It is essential to assess or evaluate these programs' efficiency and effectiveness and use the feedback to plan for improvements. This study sought to assess and investigate the role of information literacy programs in enhancing information …

A Principal-Agent Approach For Estimating Firm Efficiency: Revealing Bank Managerial Behavior, Levent Kutlu, Emmanuel Mamatzakis, Mike G. Tsionas
Economics and Finance Faculty Publications and Presentations
We consider agency-theory-based structural and reduced form models of bank performance. In the structural models, we take into account the managerial decision-making processes, and reveal underlying managerial efforts and thereby managerial behavior. In an empirical application, we estimate performance of Eurozone banks using our novel structural and reduced form approaches by Markov Chain Monte Carlo techniques. Our findings show, for the first time, that bank underperformance persists in the Eurozone whereas considerable variability across Member States exists. Our agency-theory-based structural modeling would favor cooperation of all interested parties and towards higher financial integration.

Is Religion Dividing America Beyond Repair?, Alec Wheeler
IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects
In 2022, the state of America is highly debated. Are we united? Are we divided? What unites us despite our differences? There have been times of great tribulation in American history, just as there have been times of great unity. Many Americans remember the day after the 9/11 attacks as a day to set our differences aside and help one another. At the beginning of the COVID-19 nationwide lock down there was celebration of healthcare workers and campaigns to help your neighbors out with groceries. During times of tremendous worry and pain, Americans come together through their differences and work …
In-Between Cultural Expectations And Medical Recommendations: Mothering Discourses Among Nigerian Women On Facebook, Oluwaseyi Esther Ambrose
In-Between Cultural Expectations And Medical Recommendations: Mothering Discourses Among Nigerian Women On Facebook, Oluwaseyi Esther Ambrose
Master's Theses (2009 -)
One critical health concern that hinders a child’s survival and growth in Nigeria is child mortality. Yet, the factors responsible for the high child mortality rates are preventable, and many can be traced to cultural beliefs and traditional practices related to mothering and childcare. Previous research, however, especially that used social media as its focus, rarely included the perspectives of mothers. Hence, this study examines myths, cultural beliefs, and traditional practices surrounding mothering and child-rearing among Nigerian mothers via a Facebook group, Ask the Pediatricians (ATP). Through a textual analysis of mothers’ discourses on the ATP group, the study reveals …
"We Make New Families:" Findings From A Family Court Mediation Study, Alexandra Crampton
"We Make New Families:" Findings From A Family Court Mediation Study, Alexandra Crampton
Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Mediation was brought into family court cases as a divorce litigation alternative. Today, parents are not only encouraged but mandated across most U.S. states to consider mediation before further court action can be taken. Research has not kept up with understanding how publicly mandated and subsidized mediation services become part of court cases and possible case resolution. This article reviews how mediation has evolved from outside alternative to family court “workhorse” within a family dispute resolution paradigm centered on shared parenting as in the best interest of children. Research results from a family court mediation program are presented to highlight …

Monitoring Corporate Compliance Through Cooperative Federalism: Trends In Multistate Settlements By State Attorneys General, Colin Provost, Elysa Dishman, Paul Nolette
Political Science Faculty Research and Publications
Recent scholarship on U.S. regulatory federalism has tended to focus on conflict between the states and state resistance to federal initiatives. Less attention has been given to federal–state cooperation and how it affects regulatory enforcement. In this article, we examine intergovernmental cooperation in multistate lawsuits filed by state attorneys general to ascertain trends in multistate regulatory enforcement through litigation over time. We pay particular attention to the increasing use of compliance monitoring by both state and federal regulators, including through monitors independent of the regulated industries. Relying upon a dataset of legal settlements, scoping interviews, and two case studies of …

Aligning The Transit Industry And Their Vendors In The Face Of Increasing Cyber Risk: Recommendations For Identifying And Addressing Cybersecurity Challenges, Scott Belcher, Terri Belcher, Kathryn Seckman, Brandon Thomas, Homayun Yaqub
Mineta Transportation Institute
Public transit agencies in the United States depend on external vendors to help deliver and maintain many essential services and to provide critical technologies, from ticket purchases to scheduling to email management. While the integration of new, advanced technologies into the public transit industry brings important advancements to U.S. critical transportation infrastructure, the application of digital technologies also brings with it a new assortment of digital risks. Transit agencies of all sizes are finding themselves subject to cyber incidents—most notably ransomware attacks—like those experienced by larger, more prominent companies and critical infrastructure providers. The findings in this report focus on …

Characterization And Assessment Of Barriers And Facilitators To The Decision-Making Process For Blood And Blood Donor Safety In The United States: A Collective Case Study, Lauren A. Crowder
Doctor of Philosophy in Translational Health Sciences Dissertations
Background: Over 16 million blood components are transfused to patients in need every year in the United States (Jones et al., 2021). Because of the reliance on human blood donors, the donation and transfusion of blood will always be associated with some level of risk for both donors and recipients; the tolerability of these risks may vary from stakeholder to stakeholder. While the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) concedes that attaining a blood supply with zero risk for transmission of infectious diseases may be unattainable (U.S. Food and Drug Administration, 2019), they continue to strive for the lowest …

Illusory Vowels And The North Kyungsang Korean Vowel Merger In English Loanword Adaptation Into Korean, Jiyeon Song
Illusory Vowels And The North Kyungsang Korean Vowel Merger In English Loanword Adaptation Into Korean, Jiyeon Song
Theses and Dissertations
Our auditory perceptual processing is optimized for the sound patterns of our native language. Consequently, when non-native segments are perceived, speech “illusions” often occur. This well-known phenomenon, known as the perception of illusory vowels, occurs when listeners of a borrowing language (BL) perceive vowels that do not exist underlyingly in the source language (SL).
Illusory vowels have often been considered to be the default vowel in a language: /ɨ/ in Korean, /u/ in Japanese, /ə/ in English, /e/ in Spanish, and /i/ in Brazilian Portuguese. This raises the question of how vowel systems affect the quality of illusory vowels. For …

Time Management Skills And How They Benefit Your Mental Health, Berkley E. Fredrick
IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects
As an undergraduate student at Boise State University I have experienced a significant amount of stress while trying to manage life in the classroom, at home, and in the workplace. This sparked my interest in trying to determine whether or not there was a relationship between possessing quality time management skills and having a healthy mind. Mental health is a complex idea that is unique to every person, but if a task as simple as utilizing a planner can improve a student or working professional’s state of mind, my goal was to share that. Throughout my research I found that …

The Power Of 20-Minute Naps To Zen Time, Lee Rockwell
IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects
Naps are not just for National Nap Day on March 13th (SHRM, 2019) and naps aren’t only for toddlers. Approximately 1 in 3 American adults nap, according to previous Pew Research Center data (Everyday Health, 2022). Research has shown that the workplace needs to offer separate time for their employees to take a 20-minute power nap or Zen time. Zen time can be defined as relaxed or feeling peaceful (Zen Definitions, 2022). Some people would consider napping to be lazy. However, it is the opposite. A survey by Mattress Nerd of 2,000 adults showed nappers considered themselves more productive …

Integrated Behavioral Health And Primary Care: Refining A Determinant Framework, Ariel Michelle Domlyn
Integrated Behavioral Health And Primary Care: Refining A Determinant Framework, Ariel Michelle Domlyn
Theses and Dissertations
The integration of behavioral health and primary care is a best practice to improve patient outcomes and achieve health equity. However, the process of integrating is opaque, requiring organizational change and sometimes a complete system overhaul. Implementation science offers useful ideas for helping healthcare organizations to implement care. This field has identified potential environmental conditions and determinants of successful implementation; however, much is still unknown about how these factors may be relevant for organizations seeking to integrate care. To address the limited existing knowledge in this area, this dissertation gathers practice-based evidence using exploratory methods. Results are translated into an …
