Dementia: Review Of Long Term Care Facilities, Theresa Staab
Dementia: Review Of Long Term Care Facilities, Theresa Staab
Health Policy & Management Student Scholarship
Dementia is a disease in which people lose parts or, in the case of more severe cases, all of their cognitive functioning, negatively impacting their daily lives. Remembering, thinking, and reasoning are examples of these functions. As dementia progresses in a person, performing tasks becomes challenging, bringing families to consider long-term care institutions as an alternative to informal caregiving. Families look at the combination of characteristics and socio-cultural background of an institution's patients and formal caregivers before entrusting their loved one to their care (Yaffe et al., 2002). The World Health Organization states that "more than 55 million people live …
Can Hope Be Primed In Chronic Pain? A Clinical Application Of Health Priming, Brenda Stockdale
Can Hope Be Primed In Chronic Pain? A Clinical Application Of Health Priming, Brenda Stockdale
Educational Studies Dissertations
ABSTRACT
It is recognized that nonintentional, automatic processing shapes physical health and well-being in critical ways. Conditioning––or priming––has been shown to influence attitude, beliefs, agency, behavior, and medical outcomes. Although expectations and beliefs correlate strongly with physical health, research in clinical application is needed, and studies on hope, as related to agency, in chronic pain are rare. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether, in a chronic pain sample (N = 154), hope could be primed via a Pain Neuroscience Educational (PNE) tutorial. A pre- and post-test intervention study consisting of two randomized parallel groups was designed …

Movement and Being: The Journal of the Christian Society for Kinesiology, Leisure and Sports Studies
The purpose of the current study was to explore the experiences of LDS missionary student-athletes returning to competition in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I (DI). Using Consensual Qualitative Research methods (CQR; Hill, 2012) including a semi-structured interview guide, 10 DI student-athletes/returned LDS missionaries were interviewed regarding their experience (i.e., mean age of 25 years; baseball, cross-country/track and field, football, and swimming). A research team with five members constructed four domains and 16 categories representing DI student-athlete/returned LDS missionary chronological identity changes during this experience: (a) the development of an LDS missionary identity; (b) challenges associated with returning …

Prioritizing Transit In Portland: Checking In On The Rose Lanes Project, Nathan Mcneil, April Bertelsen, Jaime Jeffrey, Jaime Snook
PSU Transportation Seminars
Transit priority lanes restrict access to certain lanes, prioritizing transit movement, while sometimes allowing for other users or specific actions - for example shared bus and bike lanes, or shared bus and right-turn lanes. Red coloring is sometimes used to reinforce the transit priority with the goal of improving the reliability, safety and compliance with the lane restrictions. The City of Portland and TriMet have been working with partners to use these tools to improve mobility and transit access under the Enhanced Transit Corridors Plan and Rose Lanes Project. This presentation will report back on early lessons learned as …
Alimentary Politics And Algorithms: The Spread Of Information About “Healthy” Eating And Diet On Tiktok, Sara Pierce
Alimentary Politics And Algorithms: The Spread Of Information About “Healthy” Eating And Diet On Tiktok, Sara Pierce
Senior Honors Papers / Undergraduate Theses
Social media has been identified as an important venue for the spread of diet trends, especially those that promote disordered eating. Meanwhile, existing research on diet and alimentary politics points to deeper societal issues at stake in food choice, such as notions of personhood and what it means to be healthy. This research involves a deeper study, through interviews with users and extensive observation of content, of the types of information about diet being promoted on TikTok and the ways in which it spreads on the app. TikTok emerged as its own social world, a place of interaction where both …

Law Of The Land: Tribal Sovereignty And Legally Legitimated Resource-Based Control Of Native Americans, Carrie Stallings, Kat Albrecht
Law Of The Land: Tribal Sovereignty And Legally Legitimated Resource-Based Control Of Native Americans, Carrie Stallings, Kat Albrecht
CJC Publications
In this article we reject the premise that race is merely an independent variable when studying the relationship between Native Americans and U.S. law. Instead we advance a new theory construct that more accurately understands the specific relationship between tribal sovereignty and inequality in the U.S. legal system. We term this new theoretical approach resource-based control that considers 1) how groups are racialized in their economic relationships with the United States, 2) how that process is derivative of the continuing process of U.S. settler-colonialism, and 3) how U.S. law functions to protect the capital of the United States.

As rates of urbanization and climatic change soar, decision-makers are increasingly challenged to provide innovative solutions that simultaneously address climate change impacts and risks and inclusively ensure quality of life for urban residents. Cities have turned to nature-based solutions to help address these challenges. Nature-based solutions, through the provision of ecosystem services, can yield numerous benefits for people and address multiple challenges simultaneously. Yet, efforts to mainstream nature-based solutions are impaired by the complexity of the interacting social, ecological, and technological dimensions of urban systems. This complexity must be understood and managed to ensure ecosystem-service provisioning is effective, equitable, and …

Speechless: Understanding The Manufacture Of Omission In An Effort Toward A More Responsible Ethnography, Sophie Goldstein
Senior Honors Papers / Undergraduate Theses
Narratives are versions of reality that are often fragile and always contingent. As such, the potential for anthropological knowledge production hinges on the gaps in narrative that result from omissions, exclusions, and silences on the part of both researcher and research subject. In this thesis, I draw attention to the ways anthropological knowledge is narrative knowledge, and, as such, can be productively engaged with the tools of narrative study. I contend with the excesses and omissions that shape the production of ethnographic narratives, and offer correctives born of this work that might allow for the production of more salient and …

MFA in Illustration & Visual Culture
This essay explores the realms of special places, the literary genre of fantasy, narrative, and comics. These topics are traversed alongside subjects of adolescence and the creation of stories for middle-grade readers. Framed with personal stories, as well as peaks into my process, I investigate these subjects through the lens of my own life and work, specifically my thesis project, a comic for middle-grade readers titled Beyond the Castle Walls. Beginning with adolescence in association with special places, I consider the work of developmental psychologists David Sobel and Edith Cobb as they pin-point the role of secret forts, nature, …

In “Plane” Sight: A Study Of Sfo’S Human Trafficking Intervention Sticker, Kendall R. Anderson
Master's Projects and Capstones
Human trafficking is a growing problem globally. Recent data indicates that airports are one of the few locations that victims can be identified and removed from a human trafficking situation. As a result, US airports have been working to raise awareness through public campaigns and employee trainings. The San Francisco International Airport, for example, created a campaign that directly appeals to victims in private spaces. To understand the effectiveness and implications of the campaign, I ask the following research question: how is the SFO campaign constructed to intervene in human trafficking? What are the limits and possibilities of this campaign? …

Review On Reform Of Research Evaluation In Past Decade, Fang Xu, Xiaoxuan Li
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
Over the past decade, there have been many scientific and technological evaluation reform documents and great efforts represented by "Three Evaluations" and breaking "Four Only", which have achieved good results but the gap is still huge. This reform has better eliminated the surface problems such as unreasonable evaluation quantity, frequency, and index in the "Three Evaluations". The reform has been initiated in the reward system, talent plan, and project fund management, but is still halfway. The reform of scientific and technological evaluation has not yet achieved a fundamental improvement in the value orientation of guiding scientific researchers to pursue excellence …
