“Not Just Being Out On The Streets”: Serving Lgbtq+ Youth Experiencing Homelessness In Milwaukee, Catherine Heady May 2022

“Not Just Being Out On The Streets”: Serving Lgbtq+ Youth Experiencing Homelessness In Milwaukee, Catherine Heady

Theses and Dissertations

LGBTQ+ youth homeless is a pressing topic for geographic study, as LGBTQ+ youth are overrepresented in youth homeless populations (Cunningham et al. 2014; Morton et al 2018). The conditions that create urban youth homelessness are social, material, and spatial. This research aims to examine service providers’ perspective of the conditions of LGBTQ+ youth homelessness in Milwaukee. Specifically, I examine how service providers in the city understand LGBTQ+ youth homelessness, where service providers identify barriers and gaps in the city for LGBTQ+ homeless youth, and ways service providers challenge and/or reproduce LGBTQ+ youth homelessness in their care work. Drawing on feminist …

Meaning Making Over A Lifetime: A Case Study Of Pat Boone, Samuel Wisneski May 2022

Meaning Making Over A Lifetime: A Case Study Of Pat Boone, Samuel Wisneski

Theses and Dissertations

In the mid-1950s, Pat Boone was one of the most popular singers in America. Several years later, Boone’s mass appeal as a star had begun to diminish and he was left without an obvious fanbase. Yet, today 60 years later, Boone is the star of several television ads, has appeared on one of the biggest shows on television, and has recently had a song explode to over five million views on social media. In order for Boone to achieve the continued fame he enjoys today, Boone has shapeshifted his celebrity to cater to receptive audiences. Using Boone as a case …

"Neighborhood Library Modernization": Public Library Expansion In Milwaukee During The 1960s And 1970s, Madeline Brenner May 2022

"Neighborhood Library Modernization": Public Library Expansion In Milwaukee During The 1960s And 1970s, Madeline Brenner

Theses and Dissertations

By the second half of the 20th century, public libraries expanded their reach across American cities and transformed the urban landscape. With almost 10,000 libraries in U.S. cities by 1960, new library development was at an all-time high. Despite this success, few scholars have analyzed these critical changes. Since the historical scholarship on library development is limited, this thesis analyzes the history of public library development in Milwaukee during the 1960s and 1970s. The goals of community engagement and partnership through city-wide circulation of material guided the development of branch library construction under the Ten-Year Library Plan of 1962 to …

Social Networks And Archaic Foragers In The Western Great Lakes: A Case Study In The Old Copper Complex, Robert Einar Ahlrichs

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation presents the results of an investigation into the use of social networks by Old Copper Complex Middle and Late Archaic (5000 B.C. to 1000 B.C.) foragers in the western Great Lakes region to distribute copper. The research consists of an application of Social Network Analysis to data derived from two copper assemblages from Wisconsin, one from Lake Nokomis in northern Wisconsin, and the other from Lake Koshkonong in southeast Wisconsin. This dissertation critiques the current model of copper distribution, the Lake Superior Model (LSM), and then constructs a more nuanced model. In order to facilitate these research goals, …

Delinquent Behaviors Among Post-Socialist Juveniles: How Do Social Control And Self-Control Theories Explain Them?, Boci Meng May 2022

Delinquent Behaviors Among Post-Socialist Juveniles: How Do Social Control And Self-Control Theories Explain Them?, Boci Meng

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the applicability of social control theory and self-control theory on explaining juvenile delinquency in post-socialist countries. Analyses were conducted with a subset data of the second wave of International Self-Report Delinquency Study (ISRD2) in which includes 18,213 valid adolescent respondents in 9 East European countries. Negative binomial regression analyses showed that only attachment to parents, attachment to school and moral belief can reduce both severe and minor delinquency. Additionally, conventional activity can only reduce minor delinquency. Moreover, attachment to peers can encourage juveniles to commit delinquency. Last, the level of self-control can reduce both severe and minor …

Terrestrial Perspective On The Formation, Evolution, And Detection Of Zeolites In Lacustrine Environments On Early Mars, Gayantha Roshana Loku Kodikara May 2022

Terrestrial Perspective On The Formation, Evolution, And Detection Of Zeolites In Lacustrine Environments On Early Mars, Gayantha Roshana Loku Kodikara

Theses and Dissertations

This study evaluates the possible formation and evolution mechanisms of zeolites on early Mars with possible explanations for their limited detections using Earth analogs. This study focuses on the formation of zeolites in the closed basin lakes where the largest relatively pure concentrations of natural zeolites are found on Earth. Five working hypotheses were formulated to explore the limited detection of zeolites in closed basin lakes on Mars and different styles of scientific reasoning with suitable examples were used to test the independent, converging lines of inquiry. Zeolites may not be identifiable in certain locations on Mars using orbital data …

The Effects Of Hybridization On Skeletal Morphology In Two Closely Related Populations Of Rhesus Macaques (Macaca Mulatta): A Geometric Morphometric Approach, Cody Zachery Schumacher May 2022

The Effects Of Hybridization On Skeletal Morphology In Two Closely Related Populations Of Rhesus Macaques (Macaca Mulatta): A Geometric Morphometric Approach, Cody Zachery Schumacher

Theses and Dissertations

Precise identification and classification techniques are vital for the field of paleoanthropology to ensure that hominin fossilized remains are labeled accurately. The morphology of extinct hominin specimens will typically be compared to extant nonhuman primate species because of how closely related they are phylogenetically. Observable similarities in their morphological variation can be examined to infer which traits may be a result of evolution and this can update our understanding of their evolutionary relationships. The genus Macaca displays a level of morphological variation that is similar to that seen in the genus Homo, therefore macaques can be used as an analogous …

Hot Licks And Rhetoric: Collecting, Community, And Disruptive Literacies, Joseph P. Serio May 2022

Hot Licks And Rhetoric: Collecting, Community, And Disruptive Literacies, Joseph P. Serio

Theses and Dissertations

This ethnographic dissertation investigates the activities and tactical technical communications (TTC) of underground music collectors. Through this it explores the concepts of community and institution that compositionists and technical writing scholars use as ways to address social influences on writing, but which fail to explain how these milieus influence the writers and their genres. Collectors of Recordings of Independent Origin (ROIOs), through the use of increasingly disruptive technologies, moved from passive listeners to active producers of music for sharing freely, garnering opposition from the music industry as their activities moved online. This study views the relationship between the music industry, …

Characterizing Coping Among Parents Of Children With Medical Complexity, Julia Barbara Tager May 2022

Characterizing Coping Among Parents Of Children With Medical Complexity, Julia Barbara Tager

Theses and Dissertations

Children with medical complexity (CMC) are characterized by intensive healthcare needs. Given the centrality of the relationship between parent and child well-being, an investigation of the experiences of parents who care for CMC is warranted. Parents of CMC experience significant challenges relating to practical matters and their own well-being, but there is a dearth of research examining parental coping strategies used in response to these challenges. Informed by the revised Transactional Model of Coping, the current study aimed to characterize coping among a sample of parents of CMC. Twenty parental caregivers of CMC served by the Complex Care Program at …

Sex Talks Between Lgbtq+ Parents And Children, Emily Gerlikovski May 2022

Sex Talks Between Lgbtq+ Parents And Children, Emily Gerlikovski

Theses and Dissertations

Research on parent-child sex talks typically focuses on the perspectives of heterosexual parents. The reported number of queer parents is growing in the United States (Baker, 2019), and thus more children are hearing about sex topics from the points of view of sexual minorities. Thus, including queer perspectives on a topic that can have a lot of influence on sexual behaviors is imperative. The purpose of this research is to understand topics that are covered in sex topic conversations between LGBTQ+ parents and their children, how LGBTQ+ parents approach the conversations, and what LGBTQ+ parents’ goals are for the conversations. …

Practice, Community, And Algorithms: How Youtube Creators Learn Through Making, Morgan E. Forbush May 2022

Practice, Community, And Algorithms: How Youtube Creators Learn Through Making, Morgan E. Forbush

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, I answer the following questions: How do YouTube content creators learncontent creation through their practice and participation in communities of practice? How do these communities help creators form identity? And, lastly, how do the YouTube’s automated systems shape creators’ practice and impact their identity? To explore these questions, I observed a community of new creators to understand how creators learned about content creation from others. I interviewed 11 YouTube creators that ranged in size of viewership and experience to understand how they personally adapted their content to the platform of YouTube as they create videos. I find …

Two Cemeteries In One: An Historic Archaeological Analysis Of The Cemeteries That Comprise Today’S Liberty Cemetery In Trevor, Wisconsin, Sydne Morgan Johnson May 2022

Two Cemeteries In One: An Historic Archaeological Analysis Of The Cemeteries That Comprise Today’S Liberty Cemetery In Trevor, Wisconsin, Sydne Morgan Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is an historic archaeological comparison of the two cemeteries that comprise today’s Liberty Cemetery in Kenosha County, Wisconsin: the Old Cemetery (1844-1883) and the New (1885-1924). Salem, Wisconsin’s first settlers arrived in the 1830s, and shortly thereafter some began burying their dead at a place called Liberty Corners. The burial grounds continued to grow, and within a few years, the church across the street began overseeing it. The church transferred the graveyard to a private organization in 1884, and that group mixed a new cemetery—called Liberty Cemetery—into the same grounds as the old one. This thesis compares these …

Seeking Justice And Effecting Organizational Change: Kategoria As A Form Of Rhetorical Leadership, Marnie Lawler Mcdonough May 2022

Seeking Justice And Effecting Organizational Change: Kategoria As A Form Of Rhetorical Leadership, Marnie Lawler Mcdonough

Theses and Dissertations

Organizational scandals at both the institutional and leadership levels abound in society, and, with growing platforms and forums to level allegations, public accusations by myriad individuals have increased. As an understudied genre, kategoria, or speeches of accusation, should be considered for their ability to influence change. In this study, I argue that kategoria can be employed as a form of rhetorical leadership and utilized as a tool to disrupt value hierarchies and, thus, effect organizational change. This investigation assumes a genre analysis to move beyond establishing accusation simply as a classification of forensic rhetoric but to illustrate that the generic …

Hyper-Peripheral Regional Evolution: The ‘Long-Histories' Of The Pilbara And Buryatia, Tom Barratt, Anton Klarin May 2022

Hyper-Peripheral Regional Evolution: The ‘Long-Histories' Of The Pilbara And Buryatia, Tom Barratt, Anton Klarin

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

In this article, we outline how evolutionary economic geography (EEG) explains peripheral economic development by comparing two peripheries over extended time periods. This comparison involves critically appraising EEG’s capacity to account for peripheral evolution. For geographical, historical, and political reasons, peripheries lack resources that lead to path creation and renewal. The hyper-peripheral regions of the Pilbara in north-west Australia and of Buryatia in south-east Russia provide excellent comparative case studies for understanding how peripheral regional development evolves in ways contingent upon time, state institutions, natural resource endowments, and region/firm dynamics. Our analysis shows that EEG is well equipped to deal …

Panel Data Analysis Of Import Tariff Policy On Economic Growth And Industrial Output In Developing Economies, Connor A. Palazzo May 2022

Panel Data Analysis Of Import Tariff Policy On Economic Growth And Industrial Output In Developing Economies, Connor A. Palazzo

Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal

This paper is focused on interpreting the effects of import tariff policy on domestic economic growth in the small market economies of developing nations. There have been several previous studies that have investigated the effect of tariff policy on domestic consumers and producers of already established economies. In addition, there have also been many studies assessing the effects tariffs from developed countries have on developing countries. However, few reports have been done on how tariffs impact the domestic producers of a developing nation. It is widely accepted that open and free trade is the best method for facilitating growth and …

Tiger King: A Case Study In Environmental Media Representation And Effects, Ashley White May 2022

Tiger King: A Case Study In Environmental Media Representation And Effects, Ashley White

Comm-entary

Over the past decades, tiger populations have drastically fallen worldwide to the point where most tigers are listed as endangered or critically endangered. Furthermore, there are currently more tigers living in captivity in the US than in the wild. In this paper, the relationship between the environmental issue of conservation and the effects of mass media productions is explored through a critical analysis of Tiger King. Specifically, the purpose of this paper is to answer the following questions. First, does Tiger King perpetuate or disrupt existing models of documentary narrative and cinematography? (Q1) Second, to what extent is Tiger King …

Pragmatics Paper: The Real Housewives Of New Jersey, Madeline Graf May 2022

Pragmatics Paper: The Real Housewives Of New Jersey, Madeline Graf

Comm-entary

Reality television has brought viewers into the lives and homes of many different families across the country. While people question the ‘reality’ aspect of reality TV, the interpersonal conflict amongst families, friends, and loved ones is definitely far from scripted. Shows such as The Real Housewives franchise allow viewers to see many patterns of human communication on their screen, even if they are unaware of it. Using the theories discussed in the Pragmatics of Human Communication by Watzlawick, Beavin and Jackson, this paper analyzes the family systems and interpersonal relationships within The Real Housewives of New Jersey. Applying the concepts …

The Bipartisan Media Strategy: How Three Ideologically Different Candidates Found Success, Madeline Graf May 2022

The Bipartisan Media Strategy: How Three Ideologically Different Candidates Found Success, Madeline Graf

Comm-entary

This essay analyzes the social media strategies used by three very different candidates who have all run for presidential office. Using Joshua Meyrowitz’s application of Erving Goffman’s The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life, we can see the ‘middle region’ performances politicians use to seem approachable and relatable to their target audience. With the transition from print media, to the early stages of electronic media, to social media, the barrier between a politician and the public has broken down to the point where the American public has the illusion of a personal connection with these political figures. It is hard …

Shein: How Immaterial Labor Fuels The Capitalist Fast Fashion Industry, Sara Donatello May 2022

Shein: How Immaterial Labor Fuels The Capitalist Fast Fashion Industry, Sara Donatello

Comm-entary

This paper highlights the consumption of fast fashion products by consumers as immaterial labor. The industry runs not only on the production of goods, but the consumption and advertising done by influencers and everyday consumers alike. The research explores romantic individualism as a way to advertise products to followers and how the global apparel industry works. Research is supported by surveys completed by SHEIN consumers ages 18-25. The sustainability of the fast fashion industry is also a factor explored in this paper.

Are Humans An Invasive Species? How The Development Of Our World Has Continuously Encroached On Wildlife, Madeline Graf May 2022

Are Humans An Invasive Species? How The Development Of Our World Has Continuously Encroached On Wildlife, Madeline Graf

Comm-entary

Through the development of our society mankind has adversely impacted the species that existed long before humans did. Humans have effectively become an invasive species, taking over the homes and resources of animals across the globe. People continue to expand into new lands and territories to compensate for an ever-growing population, converting natural land into cities with homes, offices, shopping centers, and more. Through urbanization we are displacing countless species from their natural habitats or forcing them to adapt to a new environment. As our world grew, so did our economies and trade market, creating the issue of global shipping …

A Response To Woodstock 99: Peace, Love, And Rage; Recontextualizing Editorial Biases In Nu Metal, Samuel Graff May 2022

A Response To Woodstock 99: Peace, Love, And Rage; Recontextualizing Editorial Biases In Nu Metal, Samuel Graff

Comm-entary

Nu metal, the oft-maligned subgenre of heavy music which reached massive commercial heights around the turn of the millennium, has long been a pop cultural punching bag. With recent media trends retrospectively framing past movements along ill-defined identity lines, the 2021 HBO documentary “Woodstock 99: Peace, Love and Rage” takes a close look at the ill-advised late-90s festival and does so by condemning Nu metal as staunchly consumerist, misogynist, and racist. These characteristics are generally held across the few pieces of media scholarship on the genre. In this paper, I analyze and rebuke the documentary and in doing so, provide …

The Resurrection Of Yik Yak, Lily Neher May 2022

The Resurrection Of Yik Yak, Lily Neher

Comm-entary

In this paper, I discuss the impact of the app Yik Yak on college campuses, after it returned as a platform in 2021 post 2017 removal. The key aspects of the app include its location-based nature, anonymity, and user moderation system. I discuss advantages and disadvantages of the culture that it fosters, as well as greater social, political, and philosophical implications of Yik Yak as a hybrid space, or a space that permits communication both online and in the real world.

A Manufactured Culture: A Look Into How U.S. Imperialism Coerced The Philippine Economy Into A Culture Of Migration, Gio Ramos May 2022

A Manufactured Culture: A Look Into How U.S. Imperialism Coerced The Philippine Economy Into A Culture Of Migration, Gio Ramos

Comm-entary

In this research paper, I investigate the origins of labor brokerages in the Philippines. The Philippine economy heavily relies on remittance which is when temporary overseas Filipino workers and emigrants send money back to their families in Philippines. This money is then flushed back into the local economy and keeps it running. Throughout this essay, I find that United States imperialism is a root cause for early labor systems in the archipelago. I analyze historic books and other expert studies on this topic to come to a final conclusion that illuminates my primary research question. How has US imperialism coerced …

Equity Vs. Equality: How Differing Viewpoints Choose To Portray History, Sara Donatello May 2022

Equity Vs. Equality: How Differing Viewpoints Choose To Portray History, Sara Donatello

Comm-entary

This paper explores the themes of equity and equality, defining the terms and applying them to projects done by civil rights activists Nikole Hannah-Jones and Robert Woodson, and a government commission created by Donald Trump. The 1619 Project, founded by Hannah-Jones, pushes the narrative of equity, following the idea of the politics of difference. 1776 Unites, founded by Robert Woodson, provided a counterargument to the 1619 Project, and follows the politics of universalism and equality, holding everyone in the same esteem. Finally, the 1776 Commission, created by Donald Trump, is not associated with 1776 Unites but follows the same narrative …

Covid-19 Conversation Analysis, Luca Tosi May 2022

Covid-19 Conversation Analysis, Luca Tosi

Comm-entary

In this paper, I present the findings from an empirical project completed for a college-level Communication Analysis class. These findings, while containing scholarly terms and nomenclature, are highly applicable to any day-to-day interactions had between any multitude of participants. It is my goal, throughout this paper, to provide readers with a more in-depth look at the ways in which our words and actions convey our messages in ways we didn’t even consciously mean.

How Will God And The Church Fit Into The Metaverse?, Grace Rose May 2022

How Will God And The Church Fit Into The Metaverse?, Grace Rose

Comm-entary

In this paper, I tell a story about the argument over whether God and the Church will be part of our coming “metaverse.” While we can be pretty sure that the metaverse will be good for the full range of “congregations,” good, reasonable citizens disagree about whether the metaverse will be just a tool in God’s creation or whether the metaverse will move us past traditional notions of God. In this story, I introduce some of the characters who engage in and contribute to this argument. My story also animates some of the argumentative moves that these characters make.
