Impact Of Interleukin-34 On The Promotion Of Bone Osteolysis And Neuroinflammation In Experimental Models Of Alzheimer’S Disease, Anny Ho

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a growing health concern and is the most common type of dementia worldwide. Emerging evidence indicates that aggregated amyloid-beta (Aβ) peptides, one of the hallmark features of AD neuropathology, can increase RANKL-mediated osteoclast activity leading to the prevalence and severity of inflammatory osteolysis, e.g., osteoporosis and periodontal bone loss. Conversely, osteolytic lesions are associated with increased risk of dementia diagnosis indicating that there is a direct link between dementia and inflammatory osteolysis. It was demonstrated that the neuronal cells primarily produce interleukin-34 (IL-34) and microglia, macrophages, and osteoclast precursors express colony-stimulating factor 1 receptor (CSF-1R), a …

Dancing With 4e Cognitive Science And Human Science Psychology, Joshua Hall Apr 2022

Dancing With 4e Cognitive Science And Human Science Psychology, Joshua Hall

Middle Voices

According to the “Embodied Cognition” entry in the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, the three landmark texts in the 4E cognitive science tradition are Lakoff and Johnson’s Metaphors We Live By, Varela, Thompson, and Rosch’s The Embodied Mind, and Andy Clark’s Being There. In my first section, I offer a phenomenological interpretation of these three texts, identifying recuring affirmations of the figure of dance alongside explicit marginalization of the practice of dance, perhaps in part due to cognitive science’s overemphasis on cognition to the exclusion of affect. In my second section, drawing on my previous interpretations of proto-affect theorists …

Courageous Followership And Leadership In Higher Education: The Professional Relationship Between Presidential Assistants And Their Leaders, Lisa Smith

Thinking Matters Symposium

The term courageous followership was introduced over fifteen years ago by author Ira Chaleff in his book The Courageous Follower: Standing up to and for our leaders (2009). While the concept of courageous followership is relatively new in leadership theory models, the idea has shifted from the all-powerful leader and submissive follower model to a more dynamic model that supports and balances leadership today (Chaleff, 2009). Whether an institution has a more hierarchical or a shared leadership model, some power exists in the leaders and some in the followers (Chaleff, 2009). To this end, a professional relationship between an assistant …
