Tell Me More: Parent–Child Sexual Talk And Young Adult Sexual Communication Satisfaction With Romantic Partners, Kelsi N. Wilson, Jakob Jensen, Sharon Ballard, Alan Taylor

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

Young adults (18–30) tend to show insufficient levels of communication about sex with their romantic partners, despite its many benefits to relationships among this age group. Learned sexual shame and guilt can play a role in inhibiting sexual communication with partners, and early messages about sex from parents stemming from narrow cultural boundaries of communication may play a role in fostering sexual shame and guilt from a young age, potentially influencing later sexual communication patterns with partners. We sought to identify whether a significant relationship existed between the sexual communication participants received from parents while growing up and their current …

Qualitative Examination Of Sex Therapists' Perspectives Regarding Women With Low Sexual Desire, Tatiana C. Bryan

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Female sexual desire disorder is often discussed in the literature, but there is a paucity of data on how sex therapists conceptualize and treat this disorder. To address a gap in the current literature, this study collected the perspectives and attitudes of clinicians working with patients presenting with low sexual desire. This qualitative study aimed to understand how sex therapists’ conceptualization of female sexual desire disorder is used to make decisions about diagnosis, treatment, and assessing patient progress. Grounded theory methodology was used to examine the attitudes and beliefs held by sex therapists. Results were used to generate a framework …

Pharmakon In The Firelands: Connecting Historical Discourses And Small-Town Social Contexts With Substance Use Experience, Andrew Robert Burns Mar 2022

Pharmakon In The Firelands: Connecting Historical Discourses And Small-Town Social Contexts With Substance Use Experience, Andrew Robert Burns

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The ongoing increase in opioid and polysubstance-related overdoses and mortality in United States coincides with a shift in the ways substance use is understood. Once almost exclusively treated as a criminal problem, substance use, and overdose is increasingly viewed in terms of public health and from an urban to rural issue. The discourse surrounding the use of psychoactive substances largely omits the voices of the very people who use them. Likewise, the social context of small towns, at once not quite rural nor entirely urban, is generally given little consideration. To address these gaps in the research, I conduct two …

Re-Centering And De-Centering ‘Race’: An Analysis Of Direct-To-Consumer Genetic Testing Organizational Websites, Beatriz Nieto-Fernandez

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As direct-to-consumer (DTC) genetic testing technologies become an ever-expanding business in the United States, this dissertation project investigates the ways in which two leading organizations, AncestryDNA and 23andMe, utilize discourses of ‘race’ to connect with their customers. This study is particularly significant because it opens up new avenues of research in the field of organizational communication by engaging with a new genre of organizations and the complexities of biocapitalism, in which genetic data is commodified for consumption. Blending computational scraping of data and manual qualitative analysis of organizational texts and videos available on the corporate websites, while using postcolonial studies …

Essays On Intersection Of Economics And Judicial Decision-Making, Masoud Asadi Mar 2022

Essays On Intersection Of Economics And Judicial Decision-Making, Masoud Asadi

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation consists of two chapters on the economics of judicial decision-making. In chapter 2, using the data from U.S. immigration courts and the Global Terrorism Dataset, I investigate the effect of terrorist attacks on asylum decisions. I find that terrorist attacks within the courts' states reduce the likelihood of granting asylums by 1.9 percent. This effect is driven by Islamic, Right-wing, and Lone-wolf terrorist attacks, and the magnitude of the effect is largest in the case of Islamic terrorist attacks (3.6 %) and smallest in the case of Lone-wolf attacks (1.9 %). Left-wing terrorist attacks have no impact on …

Fonseka, Lotus Mcdougal, Anita Raj, Elizabeth Reed, Rebecka Lundgren, Lianne Urada, Jay G. Silverman

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

This study aimed to understand whether maternal child marriage and past year intimate partner violence (IPV) impact stunting among Sri Lankan children under 5 years old, and, secondarily, whether proximity to conflict is associated with stunting. Additionally, we assessed whether proximity to conflict moderates the relationships between maternal child marriage and past year IPV (sexual, physical, and emotional). We tested these questions using logistic regression analyses of the 2016 Sri Lankan Demographic and Health Survey (n = 4941 mother-child dyads). In country-wide adjusted analyses, we did not find associations between maternal child marriage or IPV and stunting (p > 0.05). Children …

Maxwhere: 3d Vr Library Spaces In Hungary, Viktor Zsömle, Péter Kiszl

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Virtual Reality (VR) and 3D environments are increasingly widespread technologies. Although VR is usually associated with an engaging gaming experience, its current use goes far beyond entertainment and the market of electronic games. Different VR spaces are used in industrial settings, manufacturing, and even education. There is a new interdisciplinary field which was created related to 3D VR content: cognitive infocommunications (CogInfoCom). Research shows that with the help of 3D VR environments work processes can be completed (up to 30–50%) faster, and the effectiveness of learning and recalling information can be significantly increased as well. The free 3D spaces of …

Assessment Of The Influence Of Socio-Demographic And Personality Factors On Health Behaviours In Healthy Postmenopausal Women, Daria Schneider-Matyka, Elzbieta Grochans, Agnieszka Samochowiec, Malgorzata Szkup, Katarzyna Augustyniuk, Anna Jurczak, Malgorzata Sterczak

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity

Background: Lifestyle and health behaviours are determined by the level of knowledge, beliefs, existing dysfunctions, and interpersonal relationships, as well as personality factors. The aim of this study was to assess health behaviours undertaken by postmenopausal women, and to analyze how they are influenced by personality factors. Material/Method: The study included 196 postmenopausal women at the mean age of 56.80 +/- 4.08. The Health Behaviour Inventory and a personality questionnaire (NEO-FFI) were used. Results: In the study, women living in cities of over 100.000 residents scored higher than those living in smaller towns (p<0.05). The level of neuroticism negatively correlated with overall health behaviours, health practices, and a positive mental attitude (p<0.05). The level of conscientiousness negatively correlated with health behaviours, a positive mental attitude, and preventive behaviours (p<0.05). Positive correlations were observed between the level of extraversion and overall health behaviours, preventive behaviours, normal eating habits, health practices, and a positive mental attitude (p<0.05). Conclusions: 1. Raising the awareness through educational programmes implemented as part of care provided by primary care centres (especially in smaller towns and rural areas) could improve the level of healthful behaviours undertaken by postmenopausal women. 2. Health behaviours are also greatly dependent on personality traits, which are biologically determined and relatively stable.

Sports Events As A Determinant Of Sport Tourism, Wojciech Ratkowski, Jadwiga Ratkowska

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity

The origins of sport tourism are strictly associated with sport emerging as competition and a show. Its roots date back to ancient Greece. The 20th century marks a dynamic development of this branch of tourism, which uses sports shows as the main purpose for traveling. The concept of sport tourism should be narrowed down to those who passively participate in all kinds of sports events and to the actual participants of these events. Thus there will be two groups of people who can be called sports tourists. All kinds of sporting events are an important factor contributing to the development …
