Anaerobic Power And Hydration Status In Combat Sport Athletes During Body Mass Reduction, Anna Kurylas, Jakub Chycki, Tomasz Zajac

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity

Background: ‪Hydration is one of the most significant issues for combat sports as athletes often use water restriction for quick weight loss before competition. There is significant evidence to indicate that the hypohydration status impairs anaerobic performance. The aim of this study was to investigate if hypohydration, to reach a weight category, affects anaerobic performance. Material and methods: ‪Six well trained combat sport athletes, classified in the middleweight division, took part in the experiment. The hydration status and anaerobic performance parameters were evaluated at four points in time (t1 – four weeks before fight, t2 – two weeks before fight, …

Exploring The Absence Of A Black Lives Matter Movement In Egypt, Farah Dewedar Mar 2022

Exploring The Absence Of A Black Lives Matter Movement In Egypt, Farah Dewedar

The Undergraduate Research Journal

Movements combating racial segregation have existed for centuries, persisting even through tough circumstances such as a global pandemic. The process of examining calls for racial equality throughout history, such as the remarkable 1960s American Civil Rights and the 21st century BLM movements, can unravel the fundamental elements behind the success of a movement. The presence of audible black voices, massive media coverage and social awareness have proven to be essential in the upheaval of a movement. The fact that Egypt lacks black celebrities, uncensored media and any affiliation to dark-skinned individuals and/or Africans, helps to perpetuate the injustice suffered by …

Women In Stem: Gender Biases And Employment, Reem Mohamed Mahmoud

The Undergraduate Research Journal

This main focus of this paper is to reduce the gap between women engagement in undergraduate and career level trends in STEM fields. The literature explored points to the major influence of sociocultural factors in the gender gap at the employment level. Therefore, this study examined possible success factors for solutions to this disparity specifically at the workplace. The findings showed that the implicit gender biases programs became more effective when they enforced experiential learning and occurred at appropriate durations. It was also found that the hiring phases could be more gender balanced using language and application screening tools along …

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam And Egypt’S Water Security, Farah Khayry Mar 2022

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam And Egypt’S Water Security, Farah Khayry

The Undergraduate Research Journal

The Nile River is the backbone of Egypt. Egypt’s dry climate, lack of alternative water sources, and scarce rainfall and arable land intensify its reliance on the Nile River. In fact, the Nile River provides Egyptians with 97% of the available fresh water. Currently, Egypt is experiencing a rising water deficit due to wasteful water irrigation and consumption, global warming, and rapid population growth. The Egyptian population is increasing at an annual rate of two percent, creating a rising demand on the already dwindling Nile water supply. Another threat to the Egyptian Nile water supply is the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance …

The Anthropology Of Religion, And Question Of Methodology, Michel Sherif Mikhail Mar 2022

The Anthropology Of Religion, And Question Of Methodology, Michel Sherif Mikhail

The Undergraduate Research Journal

Anthropology, being an inherently interdisciplinary discipline, is a promising approach to the forever perplexing subject: Religion. Driven by a quest to understand the Humanity of humans—to widen the perspective of the “other”, it had an inevitable encounter with religion. And just as every other discipline, it had its share of war wounds with challenges in either definitions, methodology, or the outcomes of the study of religion. In this review, I am looking into the chaotic outcomes that is far from rewarding for the “tidy mind”, the methodology behind the outcomes, and potential solutions for these challenges.

Selected Aspects Of Testing The Positioning Accuracy Of Gnss Receivers Used In Sports And Recreation By Dynamic Measurements, Cezary Specht, Tomasz Szot, Mariusz Specht, Pawel Dabrowski

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity

Satellite navigation systems have been used in professional navigation and geodesy for many years. The past decade has been a time of extending their application to devices also accessible to non-professional users. Sports and recreation is one of the major new areas in which satellite receivers are used. Since device manufacturers do not inform precisely (or at all) about the level of the positioning accuracy provided by such devices, it is necessary to propose a method of its assessment. This paper presents selected aspects of testing receivers in dynamic measurements to determine their accuracy based on international recommendations and standards …

Can Physical Activity Modulate Pain Perception During Ontogenesis?, Maciej Pawlak, Aleksandra Jazdzewska, Katarzyna Leznicka Mar 2022

Can Physical Activity Modulate Pain Perception During Ontogenesis?, Maciej Pawlak, Aleksandra Jazdzewska, Katarzyna Leznicka

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity

The aim of the paper is to emphasise the significance of physical activity as an element directly or indirectly modulating the perception of pain during ontogenesis. Pain is a distinctive sensory sensation and also a subjective criterion of health or disease. In contrast to other modalities (taste, smell, touch), it triggers solely negative emotions and sensations. Pain is a highly individualised sensory phenomenon, involving the physical, cognitive and emotional spheres of human life. Different reactions to pain during ontogeny most often result from the loss of communication skills, a systematic decrease in the functions of all systems and organs, in …

Problematic Expectations: Using Close Reading To Surface Emotional Labor In School Librarian Job Postings, Alexandra Grimm Mar 2022

Problematic Expectations: Using Close Reading To Surface Emotional Labor In School Librarian Job Postings, Alexandra Grimm

School of Information Studies - Post-doc and Student Scholarship

Although emotional labor—defined as the process(es) by which a worker manages their feelings in order to produce the desired emotional response in a customer—has been studied in various fields and specific domains of librarianship, this topic has yet to be examined in school librarianship. In this exploratory article, I perform a close reading of school librarian job postings to surface expectations of emotional labor and explicate connections to the feminized history of librarianship. The article closes with a call to action, outlining steps for administrators and researchers to prevent the potential harms of emotional labor in school librarianship.
