A Guide To Creating Core Ocean Gdp Accounts, Charles S. Colgan Mar 2022

A Guide To Creating Core Ocean Gdp Accounts, Charles S. Colgan

Publications

Start with a simple question. What does the ocean contribute to the national economy? This might seem like a trivial question. After all, the contributions of other major natural resources such as agriculture or forest products are regularly counted as the output of farming, food, and fibre industries along with lumber and other forest products. But in most countries, there is no identifiable “ocean economy”. Industries like marine transportation or fishing are accounted for, but nothing that ties all the varied ocean-related economic activity together. Without a deliberate effort to identify and measure all relevant economic activity related to the …

Reimagine The Possibilities: Shifting A Peer Reference Program From In-Person To Online To Hybrid, Lydia C. Gwyn

ETSU Faculty Works

In 2017, the Sherrod Library at East Tennessee State University launched the Library Ambassador Program (LAP), a peer-reference program through which trained undergraduate students employed by the library are stationed in buildings across campus to help students with their research. Just as the LAP was gaining traction, COVID-19 forced a quick transition to online mode. This presentation will discuss the value we found in shifting our program online and how the LAP functions now in a hybrid space, supporting information literacy both online and in-person across campuses. Participants wishing to develop their own peer-mentoring program will come away with practical …

Preschool Children’S Processing Of Events During Verb Learning: Is The Focus On People (Faces) Or Their Actions (Hands)?, Jane B. Childers, Emily Grace Warkentin, Blaire M. Porter, Marissa Young, Sneh Lalani, Akila Gopalkrishnan Mar 2022

Preschool Children’S Processing Of Events During Verb Learning: Is The Focus On People (Faces) Or Their Actions (Hands)?, Jane B. Childers, Emily Grace Warkentin, Blaire M. Porter, Marissa Young, Sneh Lalani, Akila Gopalkrishnan

Psychology Faculty Research

Verbs are central to the syntactic structure of sentences, and, thus, important for learning one’s native language. This study examined how children visually inspect events as they hear, and do not hear, a new verb. Specifically, there is evidence that children may focus on the agent of the action or may prioritize attention to the action being performed; to date, little evidence is available. This study used an eye tracker to track 2-, 3-, and 4-year-olds’ looking to the agent (i.e., face) vs. action (i.e., hands) while viewing events linked to a new verb as well as distractor events. A …

Longitudinal Implications Of Social Integration For Age And Gender Differences In Late-Life Physical Functioning, Masahiro Toyama, Heather R. Fuller, Jonix Owino

Psychology Faculty Research

Social integration has documented benefits for late-life health; yet, little is known about its impacts on trajectories of physical functioning. This study examines age and gender differences in the longitudinal associations between social integration and activities of daily living (ADLs) using a hierarchical linear model with three waves of survey data collected over 4 years from the Social Integration and Aging Study (N = 400; baseline mean age = 80.3). Findings indicated some interaction effects of age, gender, and/or social integration on ADL trajectories. Among those of more advanced age, women showed greater increases in ADL limitations than men, …

A Scoping Review To Inform Care Coordination Strategies For Youth With Traumatic Brain Injuries: Care Coordination Personnel, Cara Palusak, Brandy Shook, Susan C. Davies, Jennifer P. Lundine

Counselor Education and Human Services Faculty Publications

Introduction & Importance: Effective, patient-centered care coordination has been shown to improve outcomes for children with special healthcare needs (CSHCN), who often have complex, long-term involvement with multiple service providers. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) can result in long-term physical, intellectual, social, and emotional disabilities that persist long after acute treatment. Yet, even though it is a chronic condition, TBI remains an area with scarce standardization and research surrounding the complex, long-term care coordination need in this population. The purpose of this scoping review is to summarize current research on outcomes in CSHCN after implementation of care coordinators, whether individual or …

Care Coordination For Children With Special Health Care Needs: A Scoping Review To Inform Strategies For Students With Traumatic Brain Injuries, Susan C. Davies, Jennifer P. Lundine, Ann F. Justice

Counselor Education and Human Services Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Chronic and complex medical issues, including traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), have significant educational implications. The purpose of this study was to identify and summarize the literature on care coordination strategies among health care professionals, educators, and caregivers for children with special health care needs (CSHCN). Clarifying factors that influence care coordination for CSHCN can inform future studies on care coordination for students with TBI. Improved understanding of these factors may lead to better communication, reduction of unmet needs, more efficient service access, and improved long-term outcomes for children.

METHODS A scoping review was conducted, guided by PRISMA-ScR methodology. Five …

Does Anxiety Moderate The Relationship Between Adhd Inattention Symptoms And Cognitive Flow States?, A. Shea Hall, Dorothie Cross Mar 2022

Does Anxiety Moderate The Relationship Between Adhd Inattention Symptoms And Cognitive Flow States?, A. Shea Hall, Dorothie Cross

Student Presentations

Background

  • Although some studies have found a positive correlation between ADHD symptoms and self-reported cognitive flow states, other studies do not find such a relationship.
  • ADHD is commonly comorbid with anxiety, which has been found to be negatively correlated with flow states.
  • It is possible that some of the inconsistencies across studies might be explained by level of anxiety.

Purpose

The purpose of the current study is to explore the relationships between self-reported Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) symptoms and cognitive flow states and whether anxiety moderates that relationship.

Is It Us? Is It Them? Or Is It This Place?: Predicting Civility In State Legislatures, Jaclyn J. Kettler, Luke Fowler, Stephanie L. Witt Mar 2022

Is It Us? Is It Them? Or Is It This Place?: Predicting Civility In State Legislatures, Jaclyn J. Kettler, Luke Fowler, Stephanie L. Witt

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

While many scholars and analysts have observed a decline in civility in recent years, there have been few examinations of how political, economic, and institutional structures may partially explain inter-state differences in these trends. We suggest three potential explanations: (1) institutional structures, such as legislative professionalism and gubernatorial power, have created different contexts in which legislators build and maintain inter-personal relationships; (2) partisan competition has led to less bipartisan cooperation and contributed to strained relationships between members of different parties; and, (3) economic inequity and change has contributed to economic anxiety among citizens, contributing to conflict in legislative bodies as …

Scholarly Papers and Articles

This case study examines the process of creating a virtual primary source instruction packet using the Young Lords in Lincoln Park collection. The authors hoped to create a packet of scanned primary source materials from the collection that could be taken and used by any faculty instructor, at GVSU or beyond, without additional facilitation by archivists. The packet would complement instruction and enrich students’ experiences when archival visits were not possible for a variety of reasons. The authors scanned primary source documents and created a full lesson plan including primary source literacy learning objectives. The desired outcome was a packet …

Double The Vocation, Double The Awe: An Examination Of Vocational Awe In Music Librarianship, Z. Sylvia Yang, Emily Vickers Mar 2022

Double The Vocation, Double The Awe: An Examination Of Vocational Awe In Music Librarianship, Z. Sylvia Yang, Emily Vickers

Library Faculty publications

Building upon Ettarh’s call to dismantle vocational awe in librarianship, this article outlines the shared components of Western libraries and Western music that lay the groundwork for vocational awe in each of these institutions and explores the ways in which vocational awe uniquely manifests for workers in the interdisciplinary field of music librarianship. The article explores the narrative of music’s goodness, disciplinary training, and manifestations of vocational awe as they appear in the institutional cultures of practice of music and librarianship: inability to develop work-life balance, job creep, low morale, and inequitable compensation. In naming this phenomenon as it is …

Investing In The Social Work Profession Benefits The Health And Well-Being Of Us All, Jill Craig, Kayla Jacobsen, Mackenzie Erickson, Madison Lanning

Master of Social Work Student Policy Advocacy Briefs

Social workers are the backbone of Minnesota's human services and mental health system. Social workers worked diligently to assist people in receiving health care, connecting to community resources, and overcoming grief and loss throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Social workers are a versatile workforce serving Minnesotans in every sector of our society: hospitals, mental health centers, schools, social service agencies, community centers, and politics and advocacy. Minnesota has an aging social work workforce that must be replenished. However the high cost of getting a social work degree, especially in relationships to pay, is a hinderance to people entering and staying in …

Twin Deficits In Nigeria: Where Does The Exchange Rate Fit?, G. K. Sanni, B. A. Gaiya, V. O. Aliyu, S. N. Okafor

Economic and Financial Review

This study investigates the twin deficits hypothesis for Nigeria while accounting for the role of exchange rate. The study utilises annual data series spanning 1981 to 2019 and the ARDL modelling technique for the estimations. Among other findings, the study reveals the existence of a bi-directional causation between current account deficit and fiscal deficit. Similarly, a positive relationship was seen to exist between current account balance and fiscal balance in both the short-run and long-run during periods of exchange rate appreciation and depreciation, thus confirming the role of exchange rate in the twin deficit hypothesis in Nigeria. The study recommends …

Exploring Data Fusion Techniques To Estimate Network-Wide Bicycle Volumes, Sirisha Kothuri, Joseph Broach, Nathan Mcneil, Kate Hyun, Stephen Mattingly, Md. Mintu Miah, Krista Nordback, Frank Proulx

TREC Final Reports

This research developed a method for evaluating and integrating emerging sources (Strava, StreetLight, and Bikeshare) of bicycle activity data with conventional demand data (permanent counts, short-duration counts) using traditional (Poisson) and advanced machine learning techniques. First, a literature review was conducted, along with cataloging and evaluating available third-party data sources and existing applications. Next, six sites (Boulder, Charlotte, Dallas, Portland, Bend, and Eugene) that represented a variety of contexts (urban, suburban) and geographical diversity were selected. Of these, Boulder, Charlotte and Dallas constituted the basic sites, where one year of data (i.e., 2019) was used for modeling. Portland, Bend, and …
